  • The fundamental problem with this show's premise is: why? Why do Alison and Mona have to solve Nolan's murder? They weren't involved and it has very little to do with them. That's a faulty premise right there.

    • The sad thing is they could have done something interesting here where Allison is an adrenaline junkie and addicted to this kind of high stakes drama. And it’s a fundamentally flawed part of herself that led to her disappearance in pll and her divorce. She just gets so wrapped up in the mysteries and we can see how it’s addicting for her and how it negatively impacts her life (not getting enough sleep or slacking at her job to the point of almost getting fired). And on some level she knows it’s bad too but can’t give it up. Could be an interesting premise for her character

  • The thing with Alison’s “redemption arc” is that it just was never meant to work. This girl was so absolutely terrible that people were HAPPY she was dead and the second “a” came around ALL of the people closest to her, immediately assumed it was Alison. Like the fact they would think she went missing for a year, and came back but not completely STRICTLY to blackmail and scare them was the biggest indicator that this character was NEVER meant to be a good person. PLL’s biggest downfall was following the books for the first 2 seasons and then going off the rails afterwards. Because all the stuff the setup in those first 2 seasons was completely flipped on it’s head afterwards because in the books Alison was a literal MONSTER

    • To be honest this show never really followed the books that much and always had some serious flaws since the very beggining but I dare to say season 3 is the best cause is actually the most consistent too, rewatching another day I was actually surprised to see how coerent was. Not to mention it dragged us too long with the same premise (who is A?) for like 7 years, of course it'd be a downfall sooner or later.

  • The worst part of Alison's character was not that she was just a villain that girl was actually evil the shit she would do was borderline sociopathic, she screwed with not only her friends and played a few mean girl tricks like anyone who was just kinda pissed off and sad about something in high school, and you learn to grow past it as you grow up and turn into an adult no she messed with everyone in that school, adults, anyone who got in her way she made sure to actually destroy them. You don't just get over that and be like "yeah I was kinda a mean girl back in high school, but I am totally a nice person now" no Alison was actually evil and nuts you can’t just brush that over

    @Hi-wi2yu@Hi-wi2yu2 жыл бұрын
    • The genius of *some* high school mean girl media that gets dismissed by a lot of people, is that sometimes works in the genre will insert a borderline psychotic character who uses the mean girl persona as a self-aware and socially convenient mask for their actions, and it really seemed like this is what Allison was. She wasn't just a high school mean girl, she was a brilliant tactician and schemer and honestly a genius. The idea of that character turning as she becomes more wise and remorseful as an adult and using her intellect for good is a great idea for a redemption arc and I'm sure there are some people like that in real life, but if they wanted Allison to be that character, given her history, they needed to write a lot of bold scenes they just didn't have it in them to write. Can't really redeem a bad character if you're too insecure in your ability to do so, and instead just try to avoid reminding the audience of how she used to be... They chickened out. That's the endpoint of Allison's entire arc. The writers chickened out of their own story.

  • What I want, one day, is a mini-series that begins like one of these tv shows. High drama, with barrowed plots, etc. But when something happens, like the shooting of newt, or some murder, it takes a sudden turn to a hyper-real style, almost beyond documentary. All of a sudden, the police arrest and treat these characters with the same level of scrutiny they treat real suspects. the addition of hard legal processing. A sex scandal actually plays out with a firing and public out cry. It is only one season and ends with everyone in jail or utterly ruined. An almost satire, or something

  • My premise for the show: Take a repentant but deeply flawed Allison and put her in a new town. She's having a depressive slump after Emily left her and she's questioning whether she can really escape her past. She makes new friends in this city and things seem to be going alright, but her sadness keeps cropping up. When she's upset she starts to fall back into old habits - she becomes meaner and short with people to try and give herself some space. She feels bad about it after the fact, but in the moment she gets that sense of power she used to have. It comforts her. She keeps up trying to be a better person, but she starts keying into all the juicy, scandalous gossip of the town like she used to. She can't help but collect information, but claims to herself that she'll never use it. Then something changes. Someone tries to kill her... again. Allison survives but she freaks out, she's sent into a panic and slips back into her old self completely as she tries to figure out who's after her. She starts lying, manipulating, and blackmailing people to try and find out the culprit but now she has a boatload of old and new enemies out to get her. They bring up the terrible things she's done, frame her for crimes suspiciously like what she used to do in the past, and make her life a living hell. And who's the ringleader this time? It's Mona. A pissed off, vengeful Mona who's sick of seeing Allison getting away with her happy life, facing no consequences, and pretending she's better now. In her words, all she was doing was revealing to Allison and everybody else who she really is beneath the surface. The whole story leads up to their one final showdown where Allison kills Mona then has to make her final choice: Does she run away again, go into hiding, and start another happy life - proving Mona's point? Or does turn herself in for everything she did and start taking the steps to be the better person that she wants to be? (I have not seen a single episode of any PLL properties, so please forgive me for any inaccuracies.)

      @r4y903@r4y9032 жыл бұрын
  • Two things. First, both Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse are criminally underrated actresses who deserve far better work (I will throw in Trojan Bellisario as well). It's a shame that they are primarily known for such melodramatic substandard work. And I am saying that as a fan of PLL. Second, you make a good point about why Allison doesn't really deserve a happy ending. Now, I like a happy ending just as much as the next guy, but there comes a point where certain characters really don't deserve one due to their past actions and behavior. Dexter is another case in point where a character didn't earn a happy ending because of his many, many crimes. To give Allison (and Dexter though I haven't watched the reboot so I don't know what is going on with the character) a happy ending negates everything that character was in the first place. I believe you are entirely correct with your assessments of both Pretty Little Liars and The Perfectionists. Despite some interesting concepts and ideas both suffered from a lack of good writing, good character development, and most of all, interesting conflict. My hat is off to you, Friendly Space Ninja. I don't know if I could ever again sacrifice so much of my time willingly on such poorly constructed ideas and plots. It all feels like a waste now punctuated by temporary bouts of enjoyment and interest that only string along the audience without giving any real conclusions.

  • See, I never understood the sympathy over Marlene not getting the reboot. It would be different if if was entirely her creation, but PLL was an adaptation of a book series by another person. A loose adaptation, since the show is wildly different from the books and the books are superior from what I’ve heard, but an adaptation nonetheless. It would be like if a new show based on Sherlock Holmes got announced and Steven Moffat was upset he wasn’t the showrunner this time around. Who I actually sympathize with is the author, Sara Shepherd: imagine writing a book series that you adore and that’s also adored by a mass audience to the point that it gets a TV show adaptation, just for the showrunner to completely butcher your characters, rewrite your story only to make it much worse, and otherwise tarnish the series you worked so hard to build up. Marlene is an idiot if she ever thought she was locked into every adaptation of PLL to ever be made for the rest of time, and studio heads would be idiots for putting her in the role again after she fucked up so bad the first time and with both spinoffs. At the end of the day, Marlene wasn’t the creator of PLL as a whole, Sara was, and she deserves to see someone else take a shot at giving her creation justice on the screen. Edit cuz I just remembered something: in the books Aria and Ezra together wasn’t even really a thing because he gets arrested and sent to jail in the first book due to him trying to have a relationship with Aria, because unlike Marlene, Sara knows how fucking gross and morally bankrupt it is to have a relationship between a teenager and her adult teacher. That’s reason enough for me to not feel a single ounce of sympathy towards Marlene not getting the reboot cuz now we have a chance of not seeing pedophilia romanticized in a tv show adaptation of this story. Second edit: forgot the reboot is gonna be helmed by RAS, so yeah there’s definitely gonna be pedophilia this time around again looking at his previous work, but my point still stands.

  • 22:00 - one of the big mistakes the original PLL made, in my opinion, was diverging so much from the books in terms of the girls' friendship. In the books, the girls aren't really friends. They don't tell each other about the harassment from "A" until much later into the plot. The girls don't really hang out or talk, and that makes it a lot easier/more realistic for "A" to manipulate them. In the books, "Alison" (actually her evil twin Courtney) brings Spencer, Hanna, Emily, and Aria together despite them all being so different. The reason she does that is because she can't hang out with the real Alison's friends without giving herself away, and the core four are irrelevant enough at the time that she knows she can socially control them. So when Courtney is gone, there's really no reason for the core four to stay together. I think that made the books a lot more interesting than the show, and it makes more sense that the girls drifted apart after Alison disappears.

In the books, all of them were deeply, deeply flawed people who brought a lot of consequences upon themselves - A wasn't always tormenting them for funsies, but instead revealed what the liars had done (like when A told Sean that Aria was cheating on him with Ezra, which leads to Ezra being detained by the police). So a lot of the times, the books actually did make a valid point about how telling lies makes everything worse for yourself. Show-A was just torturing the girls for revenge (and later no actual reason), which made them into perpetual victims. Everything bad that she show-liars do has no consequences or it gets explained how they did it for a noble cause or whatever. The books made the girls more realistic, and they actually had me going "Huh, they kinda deserved what they got" sometimes. The show just made them the goody goody protagonists who cannot do anything wrong.

  • Ok some quick solutions to make this a better show: - They can't tell the cops, not because of the cop, but because it'd end up in reports, and it'd get out. They say this with that one girl's parents, who are on the run. It was revealed her parents were criminals and on the run, and her life become so much harder for it. It was supposed to be a secret, especially since it's an active case, but someone revealed it anyways. - Amp up their secrets. An affair on his boyfriend? Show Nolan half flirting, half threatening the guy. Show how after the first time sleeping with him, the guy gets more and more reluctant to continue their flirtship and their affair, but Nolan keeps threatening him, using him, and creating that sense of deep shame abuse victims often feel (The feeling that keeps them from coming forth, thinking that everything was their fault anyways). Also, show him actively wanting to kill him, keep the mystery alive. (For Nolan's public girlfriend and secret girlfriend, show him abusing both of them as well. More reasons for them to not talk, more reasons to suspect any of them of murder. Adds to how terrible Nolan was.) - The Newt Character? Show what he did. Maybe it was like, drugging Nolan before he 'killed himself' and have him think he caused Nolan's death. They interrogate him, and he confesses, clearing him of murder. The characters DON'T kill him, because that's a violent crime and we've seen nothing that proves they'd do anything violent. He instead joins in helping investigate and he then becomes a sound board, talking about how he was working to escape Nolan's abuse, and he helps other characters realize they were abused and helps them to come forward about everything, ruining Nolan's reputation slowly but surely. - The PLL characters act as a mirror to the situation. It's repeating and they're going over their own stories and fixing where they went wrong, in part by helping the new kids. Edit: Also no Professor. Get rid of that bit. It's useless. I'm not fully sure of anything I've written but it took too damn long to not comment. I'd imagine this is all in like 10 episodes, with the almost murder happening at like ep 5. Each character would get an ep (2, 3 and 4) to dive DEEP into their abuse. To show why they'd want to kill him. Ep 6 is diving into Newts backstory and him endearing himself into the fellow people Nolan abused. Eps 7 and 8 would be working through a lot of trauma, getting over the emotions to get to the truth of what actually happened and why, and combining that with Newt's story. Ep 9 is them figuring out the rest of the murder mystery, figuring out which of them killed Nolan, and a climatic interrogation / confession scene (The murderer would be one of the main three, but it'd have been some sort of "I shoved him hard, and he fell out the window." sort of murder. It'd be manslaughter). Ep 10 is the conclusion. It'd only be a half episode, dedicated to showing what happened after the conclusion. (They fix their broken relationships and finally come clean to the cops, saying it was just a suicide, but that they were lying about their relations with Nolan as he was very abusive. They express that Newt and the killer both had an argument with him the day he died, and then, cuz rich, they pay off the cops to not investigate further. You see them finally at Nolan's funeral, where they conclude the emotional arcs as each character talks to his grave. The final scene is the three friends finally being bonded, maybe not like family, but certainly a real bond.)

I like the idea of the Newt character and his secret with Nolan much better than what happened to him in the show.

They look nothing alike and I kept thinking about it whenever they were on screen together. I really feel like the perfectionists could have done well without being a PPL sequel and obviously without Marlene King. • Honestly, I agree with you on Alicen's character, but Ah man, gotta love how they split up the two women who ended up together, then introduced the plot point that there is another married pair of women... who's plot revolves around the fact that one of them is cheating on the other. Representation, yay.... I've seen so many goddamn shows where they go 'hey look, WLW!,' then turn around and go 'oh, it's not working out actually. One of them is cheating and/or leaving their partner for a younger woman' and act like they did a good job. If it's not that, they just get axed off, or they're not allowed to actually say they're gay. Edit: Oh goodie, the gay men also have a 'one of them cheated' subplot, who would have f*cking guessed!

  • I think a big problem of PLL and The perfectionist was that they strayed too far away from the source materials, the stories there while not flawless made more sense in the big revelations. However, (as you mentioned on your PLL video) King decided to sacrifice good story telling to create “shocking unexpected” revelations that made zero sense and were just there to “subvert” the audience expectations, but the novels are not as known as the series, the shock would have worked as good as they did there.

  • They were really beating a dead horse by involving Mona and Alison into the plot. The perfectionists books were amazing as a standalone series (I think only one character from them showed up in one of the PLL books, so same universe). It's obvious they should have left PLL out of this and make it it's own thing, but I guess after the Lying Game books adaptation they thought PLL would keep everything afloat...

  • the thing i don’t get with shows like pll and (og) gossip girl, is their need to be contrary when their core audience figures out a LOGICAL culprit. Do none of these writers understand that good storytelling means leading w/ clues the audience CAN figure out, so that when they finally pull the rug out, it has more impact? millions of people watched these shows, you can’t just pick the least likely person so you can say “Gotcha!” ??? It just makes everyone mad bc they wasted their time when they could have been writing fanfic lol

  • Just a regular old murder mystery? I'm not sold on the premise of the show. Why doesn't Alison leave this one to the authorities? I see no reason why she'd be invested in figuring out who's the murder or the "shady" business going on with the school's founder. Maybe I'm missing it but are we given as reason as to why Alison would be invested in this mystery?

  • 39:04 I will say though, the line does work for Ava. I mean, her birth family (the only family she ever knew) went on the run without a word as to where they were going, and I get that they probably did it to protect her, but it also definitely left her with abandonment issues (I don't remember if it was something they did a lot, but they've definitely been gone a while even if this is the first time it's happened). So for Ava to latch on to a group of friends and consider them family...that DOES make sense for her, since she doesn't have a stable family life really. This group is probably the closest thing she has to stability

  • you forgot the worst part: the two book series it's based on (the perfectionists and the good girls) are insanely good. the five main characters are solid and the reason they are working together makes sense but the distrust is always there because they really didn't know each other before hand. all their backgrounds, motivations, and story arcs made sense for them. AND it has a better plot twist than anything marlene king has ever done or could every do. it's so insanely good it makes you rethink the whole series and everything you knew about multiple characters. they were given such good material to work with, and they changed and got rid of everything except for three characters names (ava and kaitlyn and nolan) and the setting and the title. it's so infuriating i could have seen the books portrayed on screen and they got rid of everything that made it good, and to add salt to the wound, added crappy marlene king writing. the biggest disappointment of an "adaption" and i don't even want to call it that.

    @kay049@kay0492 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, they literally got rid of everything that happened in the books, the plot lines, the premise of the characters, the main five girls, their story arcs, their backgrounds, their motivaciones, the supporting characters, everything. It does not even make sense to call it adaptation because this not a adaptation at all, it’s something else.

Booker was not only questioning Ava about her parents location (which she truthfully did not know), but also the whereabouts of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that they embezzled (which we saw her dip into before). She has been carefully and methodically spending embezzled funds.

My main problem is that it could have been great had it been made by someone other than Marlene. It had all the right ingredients to be a stupid yet entertaining show like PLL was. But unfortunately because of Marlene’s insistence to try to be smarter than her audience instead of sticking to things that make sense, it really fell flat.

The same can be said about Games of Thrones (from what I've heard, didn't follow it), How I Met Your Mother and Supernatural. • I think the ending of HIMYM was even worse because the last season was amazing and then they went and fucked it all up during the last episode. It felt like a betrayal because it was so enjoyable and then they went and stabbed us all in the back with that fucking ending. PLL has been bad for a couple of seasons when it ended so people just weren’t as invested anymore and watched more out of habit and just to get it over with if that makes sense? Also, the whole "Family don't end with blood" mantra meant nothing because they went to all ends to show on screen that only blood family is important because for some reason they ignored everyone else. And no, Covid is not an excuse, so many other shows filmed during Covcid too and they did fine. They WANTED to write that shitty stupid ending.
