Exactly!! I think some of us gave Ravenswood a chance bc it gave Tyler the opportunity to be a show lead-but we didn’t want Caleb to leave to accomplish that. And at least try to solve the grave thing from the get go with some supernatural starting to be sprinkled in.

it gets even better once you realize Caleb went back to Rosewood to the PLL universe, was really weird for about 3 days, told a story about some fireflies went jogging 1 time and then completely moved on and just never mentioned any of the supernatural traumatizing shit he went through in Ravenswood to anyone at all

Honestly, the core idea for Ravenswood wasn’t awful. The main problem, aside from the HORRENDOUS acting and editing and writing, is that this show made absolutely no sense as a PLL spin off. There were zero supernatural elements to that show until we met Mrs. Grunwald, which was only done to introduce the town of Ravenswood. If this idea had been better executed as a stand alone show far from Marlene Kings grasp, I feel like it could’ve worked. Gives me The Vampire Diaries vibes with a splash of Supernatural now that I rewatch it, and both those shows were and still are insanely popular Edit: I wrote this comment halfway through the video, so when you compared the ending to TVD I screamed 😂
And taking Caleb out of PLL wasn’t a good idea either.
What probably happened was they had a concept/script, then when deciding what to do with it, decided to use the popularity of PLL to catapult it. As in, it probably wasn't originally a spin-off.

Caleb was NOT just Hanna’s boyfriend. He was also completely made up for plot armor and to tie up any loose ends that Marlene was too lazy to do.
Hannah´s cameo fucks over the continuity of PLL season five. They have a giant argument because Caleb came home traumatized from Ravenswood and both acknowledge that Hanna can´t understand because she wasn´t there and doesn´t know what happened there
Honestly I just assumed for some weird reason (keeping it consistent TBH) when Caleb and Hanna were talking in Ravenswood Caleb didn’t explain everything that was going on just the fact that Miranda died and is now a ghost and I guess now everyone in the crash are bonded from that experience. Not only that but it’s not made clear if she believes him or not. Literally she says “I don’t know what to believe”. So it would make sense in that case ,Caleb wouldn’t want to open up to her because he thinks that she doesn’t understand because he doesn’t know if she believes him. But when he does come back in episode 5 she seems to have some understanding of Miranda and Caleb, she mentions that she is gone so she implies in the next episode that she understands that she has disappeared liked a ghost. Idk it’s so confusing so what else is new

Making a spinoff where one of the main show's protagonist's love interest is the main character and therefore has to leave her has got to be the quickest easiest way to have part of your audience be completely AGAINST said spinoff.
They probably saw 'the vapire diaries' get their spin off with 'the Originals' and wanted to do the same. But the Originals were 1) really interesting characters (over 1000 years old with at least that many ennemies to fight) and 2) so great they were outshining the TVD cast: people weren't watching for Elena, Stefen and Damon anymore. Caleb was great, but as you said, he was just Hannah's boyfriend.
The originals was not interesting, and it’s shows with how terrible the show was and how boring everything was. It’s just that people got sick of the whole Damon and Elena thing

I personally think the only reason Caleb was chosen for the spin-off was because he was a well-loved character that had nothing to do with the main mystery. I know that PLL's mystery is really bad but when I re watched the show I realized that every main love interest ends up having some past to either Alison or A. The strongest connection Caleb has outside of Hanna would be the whole barley working for Jenna thing back in season 1. Since I don't think they were ever going have him have a past with Alison or A (and he never did) he would be an easy character to write out that was liked by the fandom. I love Caleb but he should've just stayed in PLL, there were possibilities in terms of (as and audience member) wanting to know about his past they could've had him go to a normal town and learn more about his family and their connection to the town and their history. Like I personally think there were many storylines they could've done with him in PLL (tied to the main mystery or not) but he went to Ravenswood. Also you can tell they weren't prepared for Caleb to leave so only watching PLL makes their breakup very sudden and almost makes no sense especially when he does return because Ravenswood was cancelled, we think that he fell in love with another girl in one week then something happened to her so now he wants Hanna back. That's not what it is but it's what it comes across as. Still love Caleb though Edited: So I just watched an interview of Tyler Blackburn talking about how he found out about Ravenswood. Apparently they knew since almost (if not) the beginning of filming season 4. Maybe I don't know how filming works but I'm pretty sure that could've been enough time to A) write it so Caleb and Hanna's relationship was just not working anymore so that their breakup would feel natural and not out of nowhere and confusing or B) give Caleb a solid reason for staying in Ravenswood for example, instead of Spencer and Toby going to Ravenswood have it be Caleb and someone else (probably Hanna) and have him notice that his family has a connection to the town or something so when the Halloween episode happens there's a more logical reason for him to stay instead of random girl he meant on a bus.
Maybe that was why I always liked Caleb. He never felt connected or super suspicious unlike most others.
You probably put more thought into the storyline than Marlene and the writers did.

@Μαία the reason why Merritt Patterson (Ophelia) left The Royals was because of the show’s creator, Mark Schwahn, who sexually harassed her and other actresses and crew. She and the others signed an open letter about his horrible and abusive behavior on set, which was unfortunately not new during Mark’s time in One Tree Hill (where he was also the creator). The OTH alumni, like Sophia Bush, have been vocal about their experience working with Mark and it traumatized them a lot. That’s why during season 2 of The Royals, there are so many characters introduced and then their storylines went nowhere.
i recognized her from the start but it took me until the middle of the video to realize she was from radio rebel. also, i noticed most of the actors were from disney channel. the actress who plays miranda is macy from the jonas brothers show, the tall white guy (idk his name) is from the dcom, cloud 9 and also teddy’s bf on good luck charlie in the last season, and, like you said, the christmas girl was also in radio rebel. bonus: the grumpy white guy is micheal from jane the virgin, and the blonde girl is from the movie, the edge of 17 and 5 feet apart. idk if it’s bad that i instantly knew what most of these actors were in without looking them up or not lmao

Here's the thing I find unbelievably frustrating - even if audiences guess correctly WHO the person is, of you do it right you can surprise them with WHY the person did it. You can seed little bits of information that get overlooked for more forefront plot points. It's not easy but it can be satisfying!

I was so annoyed with PLL making a spin off series that involved supernatural occurrences. Because if there are supernatural things going on in this universe then why wasn’t A non-human ? The things that A was doing was so unrealistic and not humanly possible that it would’ve made sense for A to be some kind of spirit or whatever. But ofc they didn’t go down that path and made a weird spin off series instead.
Caleb was one of PLL's beloved characters. As a young teenager who adored PLL, his return to the main show felt like Christmas 😂

It really stressed me out that we had to sit through the whole season and we got more questions than answers. Also, I hated that caleb just forgot hannah and "fell in love" with the ghost of miranda, like, what?
If a show randomly introduces a brand new setting of new characters who you've never seen before, and never hear mention of again, 99.9% of the time, it's a blatant set-up for an attempted spin-off show. See also The Farm for The Office, Witchright Hall for Sabrina, or Valley Girls for Gossip Girl.

Also if the story line of the episode seems kinda off or different than usual and the production value is higher than usual it's definetly a pilot for a spin-off. I don't remeber the episode names but in Supernatural they once introduced some kind of werewolf(?) Mafia and a few seasons later there was the pilot focusing on Jodie and here "kids" for some kind of female/teen version of Supernatural

I loved *_PLL_* and I knew about *_Ravenswood_* when it came out, but I never had any inclination of checking it out (which is weird because I've always been really into spooky stuff); I must have known, somehow, that it wasn't worth it.
So PLL and Ravenswood are the reason we got Riverdale and CHAOS, murder mystery show has a supernatural spinoff that tanks and original show goes on to long and losses plot

I think one of the main reasons this show was doomed from the very start was the fact that the only PLL viewers who cared about Caleb were Hanna/Caleb shippers, and they would never have tuned in to the show that caused for him and Hanna to break up and him to get another love interest.

What I find sad is the Ravenswood episode of pretty little liars in season 4 was actually one of my favorites. I loved the mystery behind that entire town so I was really looking forward on to an expansion of that but but the series that we got was a big disappointment compared to the episode that introduced it

The premise feels like if they’d tried to make the show Supernatural as a spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy…one episode one of the docs travels with her boyfriend, Sam, to a spooky town and supernatural shit happens…then she just goes back to doctoring and leaves Sam to explore the supernatural shit. Both shows continue like nothing happened…wtf CW?
Right? At least when they tried to start that spinoff series Bloodlines in season 9, it had the same tone and was set in the same world as the original show. If anything, it was TOO similar (why did there have to be a disappeared dad and a dead girlfriend again?), but the idea of basically a gang war between monster families was great and I wouldn't complain if it was explored in the main show.

I was really surprised to see Brett Dier here. I’ve always thought of him as a r e a l l y competent actor, I mean I think he was flawless in Jane the Virgin and now I’m quite confused 😕

Brett Dier (the “grumpy guy”) is one of the leads in the show Jane The Virgin and he’s so good in it! Crazy to think this is what he was in beforehand 😂

I think WB is trying to take it down cause they’re working on a reboot with hbo right now. They want us to forget about this show and the other failed Alison spin-off, so they’re “new idea” of a spin-off for PLL looks fresh.

Honestly I'm surprised that not everyone caught on that the halloween episode was leading to a spinoff. It was so on the nose and Caleb's sudden decisiom to leave just made it obvious that they had an agenda when writing this show. It was hilarious seeing Caleb return in Season 5 though.
I tried to watch this video yesterday and every single time I realize it's not available anymore, this time I'm not letting it go, I jumped on it as soon as it was released.

I wonder if they were trying to replicate the success that the CW had with their backdoor pilot episode on Vampire Diaries for The Originals. The Originals went on to run for 5 seasons and from my pov, was better than its predecessor simply because the main cast were actual grown-ups and not high school kids. They even used an old character from The Originals, the old lady

Right? Thats also because the role of Michael on JTV suited him so much better I think. Brett is much better at playing more goofy, heartfelt roles than brooding teen roles imo haha.

I may be a Rafael and Jane shipper but they really destroyed his character there. They should have left the character dead because they just destroyed our image of him.

FSN's laughter is the best. I had no idea this show was a thing but am, as always, down for a complete dissertation by FSN on it's relative terrible-ness. "PLL fever dream" is 100% accurate. ETA: There is no such thing as "too many Kit Kats."

I was actually convinced that I never watched this but turns out that I probably did? Lol, the characters and some of the scenes feel really familiar but the experience of watching it was somehow wiped from my memory. The only thing I remember about this was that I was really pissed they wanted to broke up the only couple in PLL I was interested in.
kinda love that this show did the whole 13 reasons why ghost lover storyline years before. ravenswood feels like a grade A+ satire of pretty little liars. but it is INSANE that a show with marlene king working on it can’t build tension. one of the few very good things about pll is that there’s that constant fear of the characters being outsmarted by A again.
so basically, they succeed at the same thing riverdale does: having a genuinely dark and creepy aesthetic going on in the town &... having nonsensical storylines be portrayed by conventionally attractive people in order to pass it off as if they know exactly what they're doing / exactly where the plot is going while the audience is just ~along for the ride~ ... a.k.a. ~it's up to us to figure out how all the pieces fit...~ except they make the pieces as they go along and are even more confused than us

honestly I loved Ravenswood and would have loved more seasons, I liked getting more of a backstory of Caleb rather then him just being there when people need something hacking ... I like anything supernatural so I thought it was great

Gave me Charmed early days vibes. The effects were just as trashy, but characters not nearly as likeable. I think they wanted it to be as big.

Again thank you for another gem of a video of something I had no ide existed, not sure HOW it existed, but knowing that it does makes it all great. And I don't know how go describe it but the acting in this show is like a 2000s video game; kingdom hearts come to mind? The dialogue implies an urgency and importance but the performance says otherwise
