50 FOREIGNERS In The Netherlands SPEAKING DUTCH
Speaking Dutch as a foreigner is difficult for a few reasons, one because it's easy to get by in the Netherlands with English and two, it's just a difficult language to learn for many. But I was lucky enough to attend an event called Amsterdam Language Cafe where I joined a group of other foreigners in this country who are determined to learn and practice Dutch.
I helped by asking a series of questions that they had to respond to in Dutch, let me know what you think of their performance!

Maybe that cafe could 'change' the concept, a bit. Obviously Dutch people won't go there to learn Dutch, but they might wanna help out, and make friends while at it. ❤
Hey!😃 In the intro, I misspoke a bit, there are always a couple of volunteers there that are Dutch that help with the conversations! What I was trying to imply was that the event is meant for people trying to learn Dutch and everyone you'll see talking in the video is a foreigner😁
There are taalcafes all over the country, in libraries (bieb) and community centers (buurthuis/wijkcentrum). There are dutch ppl there as volunteers, they don’t just help you talk dutch in a relaxed way, just by doing it, they also help you with subscribing to dutch lessons, reading letters, filling out forms, practical information, etc. What they get out of it? Ofc the satisfaction of helping others, but also broadening your horizon, learning about different cultures, making friends and getting to know people you may otherwise never talk with.
I'm one of the natives who was there 🙂 The ALC also has evenings for other languages, of which I've joined French. I really enjoyed having natives around then, so I figured I'd return the favour by joining the Dutch evening. (@Sam nice to meet you, video turned out really cool!)
Great idea! There’s actually lots of initiatives in the Netherlands where foreigners who wish to practice their Dutch are linked to a Dutch person. These Dutch people are volunteers and are called ‘taalcoach’. This is usually arranged by the local library.
personally i would go there if i could to learn different language's from other people (im dutch)
De Duitse jongen sprak bijna vloeiend Nederlands, net als de Spaanse dame. Wow, ik ben echt onder de indruk. Niet alleen van het taalniveau, maar vooral de wil om te leren en dat samen te doen. Misschien moeten gewone Nederlanders ook aansluiten bij de groep, ontstaan er nieuwe vriendschappen en leer je sneller de taal. Het is zelfs als Nederlander moeilijk om nieuwe vrienden te maken. Meeste mensen hebben, net als ik, van jongs af al een vriendengroep. Daar is lastig tussen te komen als buitenstaander. Ondanks dat we direct en vriendelijk zijn, zijn we ook voorzichtig om ons open stellen voor anderen. Niet dat het niet gebeurt, maar we kunnen hiervan misschien leren van mensen uit andere culturen. Je kunt je gewoon aanmelden hiervoor. Vraag het bij je lokale bibliotheek, wijkcentrum of buurthuis. Of een organisatie als humanitas. Vraag of je een keertje mee mag doen, zeg dat je eraan denkt om vrijwilliger te worden. Verbreed je horizon, drink een kopje koffie met een koekje en praat met mensen van over de hele wereld. Gezellig, twee uurtjes per week of zo. Gewoon doen!
De Nederlandse cultuur zit voor een groot deel ook in de taal, dat merk je grappig genoeg echt als je zelf buitenlander bent buiten Nederland. Ik vind het zorgwekkened hoeveel verbastering er is van taal de afgelopen 10-20 jaar. Steeds meer Nederlandse woorden worden vervangen door English, which I notice maybe even more so as I am bilingual. It's good to see so many foreigners wanting to learn and make the language and culture contained within it their own. Bravo
@@dennisd9875 taal is een ‘levend’ iets, en de nederlandse taal is, net als alle andere talen, altijd aan het veranderen. Daar kun je je zorgen over maken, maar dat heeft geen enkele zin. Het is echt niet iets alleen van de laatste tijd, probeer maar eens een boek uit 1800 te lezen. Een deel hiervan is mode en tijdelijk. Dingen die de taal simpeler maken zijn vaak blijvend. En dan zijn er nog de woorden die constant veranderen vanwege hun gevoelige sociale aard. (Denk aan neger, gekleurde, zwarte of achterlijk, geestelijk gehandicapt, verstandelijk beperkt). Je zegt zelf dat taal een onderdeel is van de cultuur dus dan is het toch ook logisch dat naarmate de cultuur verandert, de taal meeverandert? Onze normen en waarden zijn ook heel anders dan honderd jaar geleden. Zo ook onze rituelen, feestdagen, etiquette, etc. Dingen waar an je denkt, ja dat is echt nederlands zijn vaak zoveel jonger dan je denkt. Dus maak je niet druk, de taal verandert, dat is normaal. Language is a 'living' thing, and the Dutch language, like all other languages, is always changing. You can worry about that, but it's no use. It's really not just something recent, try reading a book from 1800. Some of this is fashion and temporary. Things that make the language simpler are often permanent. And then there are the words that are constantly changing because of their sensitive social nature. (Think Negro, colored, black or retarded, mentally handicapped, intellectually challenged). You yourself say that language is part of the culture, so isn’t it logical that as the culture changes, the language also changes? Our norms and values are also very different from a hundred years ago. Also our rituals, holidays, etiquette, etc. Things you think, yes that is really Dutch are often so much younger than you think. So don't worry, the language changes, that's normal.

Maybe because Dutch don’t like “baas” culture in general and in most countries police agents act like “de baas”.

I'm just super impressed by everyone in the video who's taken it upon themselves to try and learn the Dutch language. Nothing but commendable!
The guy was right about it being hard to make friends with the Dutch in order to learn more Dutch. Even though I was born here, I lived in the States for almost 14 years, and I prefer English myself. And if I run into people that don't speak Dutch, I will indeed switch over to English. One good thing about the Dutch they are straight forward, if you say you want to learn to talk Dutch, they will do that. I see you are doing really well in Dutch, which is awesome. Maybe organize a get together for Dutch people who like to teach Dutch to those who want to learn. One way to advertise is using the boards they have in the AH for buying or selling items, but also for jobs and cleaning positions. In mine they often offer courses or tutors as well.
Super leuke video Sam! Je blijft ons verrassen met je leuke ideeën. Sinds ik jouw video's en die van andere expats/immigranten heb gezien over Nederland, ben ik gestopt met Engels praten als ik merk dat iemand moeite heeft met Nederlands. Pas als men liever Engels praat, doe ik dat ook. Goede tip om als immigrant buiten Amsterdam te gaan kijken voor een plek om te wonen! Het is niet nodig om midden in de grote stad te wonen. Ik kijk uit naar je nieuwe video idee, die over de politie is ook interessant! Peace ✌🏼

Nou, sinds ik ben vroeg naar dit filmpje (wat is niet het geval voor de meeste flimpjes die ik kijk) en ik heb de energie om te schrijven, ik kan even een beantwoord geven! In mijn mening, voor de meeste mensen die op dit filmpje gekomen, ze hebben hun best gedaan. Die is wat ik kan voor zeker zeggen. Maar om specifieke kritisch te geven is best wat lastig, want het kan wees oneerlijk, afhankelijk van de manier deze mensen hebben gebruiken om Nederlands te leren. Maar ik hoop die deze mensen kunnen hun Nederlands verbeteren, zodat ze kunnen een goede leven hebben in dit land. P.S.: Mijn Nederlands is nog gemiddeld (met een B1 niveau), dus excuses als ik heb fouten gemaakt 😅. English translation: Well, since I am early to this video (which is not the case for the most videos videos I watch) and I have the energy to write, I can give you an answer! In my opinion, for the most people that came onto this video, they tried their best. I can say this for sure. But to give specific criticism is quite difficult, because it can be unfair, depending on the method that these people used to learn Dutch. But I hope that these people can improve their Dutch, so that they can have a good life in this country. P.S.: My Dutch is still average, so excuse me if I made any mistakes 😅.
That German guy was super good, he could have fooled me for a Belgium guy (For those that don't know, that is a slightly malfunctioning Dutch guy) The Spanish and Turkish girl were super good but the one that really surprised me was the Chinese girl. Her accent was so good that if you'd listen to her with your eyes closed, you wouldn't think she was Chinese. Anyway, it is great to see the effort people put in, I (Dutch) live abroad and it is hard to pick up a language, but don't be scared to "make a fool out of yourself", your errors (and effort) will be respected.

Now I know Dutch is hard to learn for some foreigners. - Scandinavians have it (relatively) easy (or so I'm told and have experienced it at times, I don't speak any Norwegian, Danish or Swedish (as far as I know) to be honest 🙈🤣) for we all speak Northern Germanic languages who are more alike than we realise ourselfs, until we go and study eachothers language - But espacially the Spanish and the Chinese girls really impressed me! That was really good pronounciation from both. And there were several non-native Dutch speakers who can do quite well in society here already. I've dealt with people living here for decades who can not even compare to that level. My compliments to them 👍🏻

Het enige echt gemixte stel wat ik ken, van KZhead, is de Amerikaanse Jovie, getrouwd met een Spanjaard en ze hebben twee jonge kinderen. (die zijn in Nederland geboren) ze wonen in Den Haag en zijn al dik tien jaar in Nederland. Jovie heeft een baan bij de Erasmus Universiteit….Het gaat hier goed hoor, maar nog niet zo heet als bij jullie op dit moment! ❤️Hil

Nederlands is zo'n moeilijk taal! Zelfs Nederlanders zelf hebben soms moeite met het praten of schrijven.. dus petje af (chapeau)voor al deze mensen die zoooo goed Nederlands kunnen spreken!! En jij spreekt ook steeds beter Nederlands 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 leuke video!
als je niet eens 1 taal kan beheersen ben je echt een magool hoor.
Dat valt wel mee, het is niet enorm veel moeilijker dan Engels; Duits is weer moeilijker dan Nederlands vanwege o.a. de naamvallen. Ook is het West-Germaans, dus voor Engels- en Duitstaligen (en ook Noord-Germaanse Scandinaviërs) relatief makkelijk te leren.
Another nice video. 2:47 Very impressed by the man from Ireland, in terms of overall sound/pronunciation I thought he sounded very Dutch, and he says he is stubborn so that will help him to integrate in (northern) Netherlands I would think.
What a nice video. The cafe is a very good idea, there should be more of them. I can imagine that it can also be lonely for someone who comes to a foreign country because of the language barrier. Then a cafe like this is a great solution. What the German boy said is correct. I am Dutch and regularly watch Norwegian series on Netflix and in their language I hear many other languages. Besides Dutch I also know how to speak English, German, Spanish and a little Arabic. I once did an Italian course, long long time ago and I know a few French sentences and words and I recognize a lot of those languages in the Norwegian language. I always find languages very interesting. The people in the cafe are doing really great in learning Dutch.
Toppers! Wat fijn dat jullie Nederlands leren! Een moeilijke taal toch? Ik vind het, als Nederlandse, nog altijd een beetje vreemd als ik op een terras of in een restaurant in Nederland in het Engels moet bestellen, omdat de bediening alleen Engels spreekt. Dat lukt overigens prima. Maar veel leuker als iemand tenminste probeert om Nederlands te spreken. En jullie zijn al hartstikke goed. Dus dank jullie wel en succes met het vervolg!

Quite funny to me, you're very correct about Dutch people just automatically switching to English if one notices they're talking to a non-native Dutch speaker in my experience. I for myself at least usually prompt if English is better for them after the first few words. Most foreigners here (In Amsterdam at least, can't speak for the rest of NL) only have a very basic grasp of the language, if any at all. Be it saying hello or goodbye, that kind of thing. But when they do use said basic knowledge, it often only causes confusion on my end. I worked in a store for a while, a decent amount of people would approach you saying hello or something similar in Dutch, only for them to make it clear to me they don't actually speak Dutch after I respond to them. Or one may thank me for advice in the middle of an English conversation (Oooh ok, dankjewel!) only for me to then wonder if I've been talking English with a Dutch speaker the whole time. Which would end up happening all the time. Groeten uit Amsterdam kerel, blijf vooral zo door gaan met de video's. Prima suggesties van de menigte, ben benieuwd. 💪🏻
Respect voor iedereen die hier Nederlands spreekt (in het openbaar!) ik kan mij heel goed voorstellen dat het moeilijk/eng is om dit te doen als er ook nog een camera bij is en je zeker weet dat je op KZhead komt te staan. Respect for everyone speaking Dutch (in public!) I can imagine is it quite hard/scary to do this when a camera is shoved in your face and you're pretty sure you're gonna be on KZhead. Kudo's to all!

Impressive how good everyone is.
Mijn broer is getrouwd met een Poolse vrouw en samen voeden ze de kinderen 3 talig op, Nederlands, Pools en Engels. Het is echt bijzonder om te zien hoe makkelijk kinderen kunnen switchen tussen de talen.
Wat een leuke video, ik ben echt onder de indruk van het taalniveau van deze mensen! Ook zo'n goede uitspraak van een aantal, bijna geen accent. Inmiddels weet ik dankzij jou en een aantal andere (van oorsprong) buitenlanders op YT, dat ik moet antwoorden in het Nederlands als iemand moeite doet om zich uit te drukken in het Nederlands. Dat helpt alleen maar bij het leren. Ik zou ook benieuwd zijn naar een filmpje over de politie in NL, hoe mensen van andere landen dat zien? Ik ben opgegroeid met dit beeld van de politie, zij zijn er voor onze veiligheid. Vaak betekent dit iemand aanspreken en bijsturen, soms grijpen ze in. Persoonlijk heb ik voornamelijk positieve ervaringen met de politie, bij aangiftes van inbraak, van geweld, bij vermissing. Dan zijn ze voornamelijk hulpverleners. Enige negatieve ervaring is een bekeuring voor rijden zonder licht op mijn fiets, maar dat is gewoon handhaving en het had ook het gewenste effect, ik rijd nooit meer zonder licht.
Dankjewel, Mai! En leuk dat je spreek meer Nederlands met mensen die willen Nederlands leren! De politie idee lijkt me heel interessant!
I find it interesting that a lot of participants struggle to find Dutch friends. We all grow up bilingual here, speaking both dutch and English very well. I also feel that we Dutch people are very open. Very interesting.
I think the key is to make friends the Dutch way, that is adapt to them rather than expect the Dutch to adapt to your idea of friendship. In my experience it works well that way. So agenda planning, being direct , and the Dutch version of chill.

Nice video. A different language makes people so extra vulnerable. My wife is from abroad (HK) but now I realise she learned Dutch all by herself. We kept on speaking English to each other and we still do. People told me to speak more Dutch to her but we both speak English at a professional level that somehow we never speak Dutch. We wanna switch countries one more time in our lives so I probably need to start learning some more Cantonese than only the scolding words... Eyeopener right there! Thanx for the video...
Mijn Nerderlandse nichtje woont op Mallorca met een Spaanse man met een Duitse vader en een Engelse moeder. Omdat haar Spaans niet zo goed was, spraken ze in het begin vooral Engels. Zij spreekt en verstaat ook wel wat Duits. Ze heeft nu 2 kinderen. Toen 3 jaar geleden de eerste geboren werd leerde zij hem al gebarentaal toen hij nog niet kon praten. Dat doet ze nu ook bij de tweede. Verder praat ze Nederlands met ze. Zijn vader spreekt Spaans met ze. De oudste zit nu op school en daar spreken ze Catelaans. Het zoontje praat nu voornamelijk Spaans/Catelaans. Hij verstaat Nederlands en kan het ook wel een beetje spreken. Mijn nichtje spreekt nu uiteraard ook goed Spaans. Ze gebruiken Engels als zij er met Spaans niet uitkomt en als ze iets bespreken wat de kinderen niet mogen horen, bijv. Over een verjaardagscadeau of andere veraasing of iets dergelijks. Heel bijzonder zo.
Die Spaanse dame heeft het accent behoorlijk goed door. Is denk ik niet makkelijk. Je hoort het natuurlijk nog steeds maar ze doet het echt extreem goed.
Toen ik jong was heb ik veel Marokkaanse mensen Nederlands geleerd. Gewoon thuis vrienden van mijn Marokkaanse man. Met een boek een heel belangrijk boek in combinatie van de krant lezen en radio luisteren en natuurlijk met mij babbelen. Het boek het... Sesamstraat mijn eerste woordjes. Het ging snel en efficiënt

First of all, my compliments on this video. A masterpiece once again. The stuff you make warms my heart and to see all of these people's commitment to learn our beautiful language is amazing. I am the Dutch part of a Dutch-Polish relationship, but we don't have any kids yet. Can't promise anything on how fast we can deliver 😂 However I know a Norwegian-Dutch couple who do. Ben zeer onder de indruk! Zowel van het initiatief en de taalvaardigheid van iedereen. Nederlands is een lastige taal qua uitspraak (bijv de letter G en de R), de gramattica is hier en daar ook zeer onregelmatig waardoor het bijna noodzakelijk is dat je er een beetje gevoel voor moet hebben. Het helpt wel als je al een taal spreekt die overeenkomsten heeft. Hier en daar gebruiken we ook o.a. Franse/Engelse en Duitse leenwoorden waardoor het nog verwarrender kan zijn.
Leuk om te zien! Veel spreken al heel goed Nederlands. Misschien dat ik ook een keer langskom. Gewoon voor de gezelligheid.

Voor de Spaanse mevrouw, voor mij heeft het feit dat de politie zo aardig is echt het effect dat ik ze graag zie en dat lijkt me iets positiefs in het land. Het heeft me echt respect voor de politie gegeven en ik denk dat ze als ze gezien worden door Nederlanders als een positieve macht, ze veel beter het land kunnen helpen. Respect omdat mensen respect willen geven in plaats van respect uit angst is beter. Ik denk dat dit dé manier is om politie te zijn.

Wat een super goeie ideeën voor een nieuwe video. Inderdaad de video over ouders uit 2 verschillende culturen en welke impact dat heeft op de kinderen die opgroeien (ik heb zelf een griekse vader en nederlandse moeder) en die over de politie is ook een goeie indd. Ik ben ook heel erg benieuwd hoe jij hier zelf tegenaan kijkt als iemand die uit Amerika komt. You keep in making great videos, very enjoyable. When they talked about the Police, it reminded me of when we saw these policemen near the train station being very patient with this very obnoxious and drunk guy that kept on screaming. You said that would never ever happen back home, I myself even would not be sure if I could ever be that patient.😂

I’ve got one idea for a future video that I haven’t seen on any of the channels from Americans who’ve moved to the Netherlands… What’s it like to grow old in the Netherlands? In general, and specifically as an expat (away from where you grew up, and comparing what it’s like to be old in the US maybe). I would love to hear some interviews with expats that’ve grown old abroad.

Whoww, ik ben echt onder de indruk dat enkele al zo goed de Nederlandse taal onder de knie hebben. Jij ook trouwens Sam! Mooi initiatief om mensen uit verschillende landen bij elkaar te voegen om het Nederlands beter te spreken en te begrijpen. Hier in Apeldoorn, maar ook in andere steden, hebben wij Buddy to buddy. Hier gaat het dan voornamelijk om vluchtelingen sneller te laten integreren en vriendschappen te laten ontstaan. En het werkt! We kunnen zoveel van elkaar leren. Ik mag mijzelf ook gelukkig prijzen dat ik vrienden heb uit andere culturen. Tot slot wil ik je complimenten met jouw youtube- filmpjes en kom Apeldoorn een keer opzoeken en bezoek bijvoorbeeld Paleis het Loo, Apenheul of huur een milieu vriendelijke chopper scooter en rij door de bossen van de Veluwe. Hi Sam a great place to interact with others learning the language in my time there was only night schools no cafes like that but how is it with the reading and writing. I find not speaking Dutch so good you get even more Dutch contacts and of cause it depends on your personality as well. Yes some things you always miss like mountains hills and of cause food. Yes the Dutch are friendly even the tax man was nice to me this year lol. Yes it might be interesting seeing how a Dutch person with a person from enough country deal with this i think probably a lot would use the common language of English specially in the early period together, lucky me came over with my partner also English so Dutch was only spoken at work and socially unless they wanted to practice their English. A real nice mix of people glad they found that place. Hope your enjoying the weather i think better an interview next time sitting on a beach terrace large cool beer than in a hot city no matter how interesting it is lol. Enjoy your day Sam

So sweet y'all tryin' so hard to learn our language, one that only about 25 million people (Flanders included) speak...! Especially those who are from a very different language culture, such as China.
The vicious circle I like that. This guy uses learning Dutch to make friends and having friends to learn Dutch. But I have heard more of such circles. Like you need a BSN number to open a bankaccount, which requires you to have a job, but for getting a job you need to have a bankaccount. Same type of circle. I wonder how many and which types of these circles Expats in NL encounter.

Je merkt meteen hoe moeilijk echte taalbeheersing is… ja, headstrong = koppig, maar de spreker bedoelt waarschijnlijk ‘vasthoudend’. Allemaal min/meer synoniemen, maar met net een andere lading.

Ik zou graag aan de slag willen als taalcoach op vrijwillige basis in de regio Den Haag, Heb jij enig idee waar ik daarvoor terecht kan? Ik kan door een medische aandoening waarschijnlijk nooit meer werken, maar het lijkt me heel fijn om mensen die mijn taal willen leren spreken en daarmee willen oefenen te kunnen helpen. Mocht je hier iets over willen weten dan hoor ik dat graag!

Door jouw video's en ook die van een paar andere Amerikanen die in Nederland zijn komen wonen, kwam ik er achter dat wij Dutchies heel snel overschakelen naar het Engels. Goedbedoeld natuurlijk, maar heel onhandig als je de Nederlandse taal wil oefenen. Dit idee, opgedaan door jouw video, gaat anderen helpen en ook mijzelf helpen. Dank daarvoor!

As a Dutchie I hated German at school. Not because of the Germans, I just could not write it properly. So I speak Dutch with a German accent. Most of the time they understand me. But being in several countries over the years I found out that I can speak almost all languages after I had 6-8 beer. Apperently then I dare to speak it. Like French. French is the most beautiful language in the world i.m.o. P.s. South African people can speak South African in The Netherlands. We understand a lot of it. But most of us don't speak or write it.
The german guy sounded almost fluently dutch, and that after only 137 days! thats insane!
If Dutch people try and start speaking English, just tell them nicely you are learning Dutch. And want to continue in Dutch. Directness like that is what we are used to. :) And you dont have to speak Dutch to be my friend. 🎶 But lots of Dutch people, have to constantly translate to English and are easier to give up on that because of the effort.
What suprised me or strikes me or whatever is how much the Irish' guy irish-dutch accent sounds like dutch. I wonder if that's because he studies on the pronunciation or if the natural irish accent sounds the same as dutch.. if that makes any sense.

Zoals anderen was ik onder de indruk van de Spaanse vrouw en de Duitse man die vrijwel accentloos Netherlands spraken.
1:29 het is ook heet in belgie, dus het verbaast me niets
In my opinion people should have to be able to speak Dutch before they are allowed into the Netherlands, that way foreigners cant claim not to understand the police (you could argue that the police should learn to speak English but then the foreigners can still claim not to understand them so thats not going to fly) Also people will only speak to you in english in amsterdam, if you cant speak dutch you just get ignored in most of the country (which is a good thing because that pressures people to learn dutch)
The police in the Netherlands have basically the same slogan as the US. To serve and protect, but we say "be vigilant" instead of "protect". They emphasize on keeping an eye out and helping people, instead of prioritizing "protecting". This of course boils down to not having a gun culture as the US does.
Man, this isn't a fun thing to say but i didnt see any one from our biggest immigrant (i dont know a better word) groups 😅 where are all my arabic friends? A cafe like this would be so great for the intergration 👍

It’s patience, the Dutch are not patient enough to have a conversation in Dutch with those that don’t speak it well. Yes they are chill people but it’s more friendly chill than “have to slow down” chill. They value efficiency and not wasting time. Plus, having to slow down your Dutch for others is not gezellig.
