24 Hours In The Most CONSERVATIVE Dutch City

Urk is a town in the Netherlands that is often looked down upon by Dutch people. But instead of just going off of what I read online or what I've heard from others, I wanted to go there personally to see firsthand what it's like in Urk. So join me as I attempt to experience as much as possible within 24 hours in Urk!

  • It's really a testament to your American friendly and extraverted nature that you pulled this of. As a Dutch person I worked with Urkers in shipbuilding and they are a close knit community who will not interact with people from other places that easily. So well done, you should get a tv program, this is your calling. ❤

    • I think it is not that big of a deal. I had nice conversations with Urkers. I’m an atheist as much as can be and they don’t have a problem with it (well it leads to a nice discussion haha) as long as you respect one another… that’s pretty basic right 😂. Yeah you have “rotte appels”, but those are everywhere. LIVING there as an outsider… that’s another story… it won’t work I can tell you that lol.

  • Man, I loved this video! You did such a great job capturing the genuine humanity of the people there! And to be honest, it's great to see something positive about Urk, because almost every time I've asked people about it I get those same responses you showed on Reddit. Your Dutch is so good, too. I feel like I speak it pretty well, but as soon as I get into a "bar" situation like 14:55 my comprehension goes out the window. Thanks so much for making this video.

Urk has been presented in bad light so often by people with cameras that whenever the locals see someone with a camera like that, they have a good reason to assume that there is another person that is going to show Urk in bad light. And obviously looking different because of your skin color would make you stand out even more.

    • Yeah, I completely understand. To be honest, I was initially a bit nervous/hesitant to film at night at first because of that. I figured most people would think I'm just looking for drama, but luckily everything turned out fine.

  • I usually dont comment but i really appreciate this video. I was raised an ''Urker'', my family lives there, i speak the dialect and its a huge part of who i am. I moved to another place in the Netherlands because of my studies and i often get confronted with people that have lots of prejudices about Urk. I started to feel isolated and often had to defend my village, i still have to. Sadly they dont know how special it is to me and many people from there. Its such a great, warm and unique place despite the bad reputation it has in the media, which is often not justified in my opinion. Of course it has its issues but despite that, its always great coming back there to see my friends and family and speak the language which makes it so fun to be there. Ive lived outside of Urk for almost 8 years now and i cant wait to move back there someday soon. Thank you for this video!!

    • Volgens mij is het in de loop van de tijd ook een soort urban myth geworden. Ik meen eens gelezen te hebben in wat oudere teksten dat juist de visserstruien met verschillende motieven per visserijgemeente meehielpen met de identificatie. (En speelden de soms zelfgezette tatoeages ook niet een rol? Die heeft mijn opa ook zelf gezet toen hij jong was en nog viste)

      @ikk90@ikk90Ай бұрын
    • Ik heb het nog eens nagezocht. In Urk Opperdan van Tromp de Vries staat het volgende: "Geen Urker vrouw verzuimde in het roodbaaien hemd de initialen van de man en de zoon aan te brengen, ook in de kousen gebeurde dit wel." Identificatie werd dus gedaan aan de hand van de kleding. :)

    • Volgens mij is dat verhaal van die oorbellen zelfs een keer verteld door Tony uit die real life soap over Urk, toen hij oorbellen ging laten maken voor zijn kleinzoon.

Sadly I did not manage to have any contact with people from there because I was there for super short period of time. All the people in the video seem super fun to hang out with. One day I will go back and I hope I will manage to make friends like you did so easily and I also wanna party like a local too😁

  • The main thing I know about Urk is that Appie Baantjer was born there, and his main figure de Cock was also born there. In his books he often talks about what his mother said to him when he was a child. (I use his audio books to fall asleep for some years now. Because they are pretty predictable in their language, and not very exciting)

  • I was in Urk a couple of months ago as a military re-enactor during the so called "Urk in Wintersferen" event. The whole town was dressed in their traditional clothing and everybody participated as if we were still in the 1940's. From the start it was clear it was still a very tightly knit community, but I envy the way they kept their traditions, such as through clothing, language, etc. This is something I hope to see return to the part of the country I'm from (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen).

Mainly focused on (young) adult audiences and discusses interesting topics like culture, international topics, modern influences, drugs, youth etc. Most of the hosts are young adults and are able to start their professional tv/journalism career there. Maybe you’ve known this already lol, but I thought to bring it to the table anyways! Love your content💜
