Urk is a town in the Netherlands that is often looked down upon by Dutch people. But instead of just going off of what I read online or what I've heard from others, I wanted to go there personally to see firsthand what it's like in Urk. So join me as I attempt to experience as much as possible within 24 hours in Urk!

Urk is no city.
great vid bro, hope you had a nice time at macumba!
@romarooramor9069 Thank you, man! And I did! It was great meeting you.
In the video he calls it a village, ;-)
It's really a testament to your American friendly and extraverted nature that you pulled this of. As a Dutch person I worked with Urkers in shipbuilding and they are a close knit community who will not interact with people from other places that easily. So well done, you should get a tv program, this is your calling. ❤
I really get a smile reading something like this! Thank you!
I think it is not that big of a deal. I had nice conversations with Urkers. I’m an atheist as much as can be and they don’t have a problem with it (well it leads to a nice discussion haha) as long as you respect one another… that’s pretty basic right 😂. Yeah you have “rotte appels”, but those are everywhere. LIVING there as an outsider… that’s another story… it won’t work I can tell you that lol.
Come on, Urkers are nice people with their own standards.
It all depends on your knowledge of the local politics. I, living in Belgium and thus completely neutral to local Dutch politics was welcomed very friendly there.
Man, I loved this video! You did such a great job capturing the genuine humanity of the people there! And to be honest, it's great to see something positive about Urk, because almost every time I've asked people about it I get those same responses you showed on Reddit. Your Dutch is so good, too. I feel like I speak it pretty well, but as soon as I get into a "bar" situation like 14:55 my comprehension goes out the window. Thanks so much for making this video.
Wow, really awesome to see you watched and enjoyed the video! Thank you for the feedback🙌🏾 And that's funny, usually people become more confident in their non-native language after a few drinks haha. I'm a fan of your work and it means a lot to read this!
The crazy thing is that I don't speak any Dutch yet I could understand maybe half to 2/3 or what you were saying... Although having learnt German in the past probably helped a lot there
My worlds are colliding 🚲🇳🇱😍
At the end of the day, humans can still be bad people.
Very cool to see you here!
Man man man.. jij krijgt zaken voor elkaar die maar weinig mensen voor elkaar krijgen. Ik heb genoten van deze reportage. Topklasse.
Wow, heel erg bedankt!
Top content man!
Heel erg bedankt!! I say this in a lot of my comments, but I genuinely apprecaite it.
As a dutch person this gives me a much better sight of Urk! I love your content
Really awesome to hear🙏🏾 dankjewel!
As an Urker, I enjoyed watching this. You have neatly shown what the population is like on our former island. we are a little different and a little apart. but we are not what is often portrayed in the media. thank you for your positive story.
Really nice to hear you enjoyed the video! Thank you for taking the time to watch😁
Shout out naar Urk! Groetjes uit Swolla!
the fact you speak dutch makes you a better reporter on this country as an outsider than any other, keep it going!!
Heel erg bedankt, Tommy!
You are a very likeable person with strong social skills, and these character traits allow you access to social environments that otherwise are quite closed off. You really have the right personality to be a successful documentarymaker or journalist, I think. I really enjoyed the video :)
Really makes my day reading this, thank you!!
The quality of these vlogs/minidocs surpassed the crap on regular Dutch TV some time ago and getting better still.
Man, this is quite the compliment! Thank you for your continued support!
Woord.
Saying that as if Dutch TV is still a thing these days, that shit died out years ago.
Your presentation of Urk was for me, a Dutch guy, PERFECT, and again you speak Dutch......... Gozer... heel goed... daar houden wij van.
Ik waardeer deze reactie heel veel! Dankjewel!
My Baby!!!!!!! I don’t know what I love more the knowledge I gain about the Netherlands watching your videos, or just looking at your handsome face😍🥰😘😍😘🥰👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you mom❤️❤️❤️

Heel erg bedankt!
As a Dutch person it's really cool to hear you speak Dutch! You rock man. keep doing you
Thank you! I really enjoy mixing in Dutch in these videos, I feel it gives it different/more authentic vibe!
Was great talking to you man. Greatings from the security, loved the video💪💪
Hey man! It was really awesome meeting you🙌🏾 I'm glad you were able to see the video and that you enjoyed it!
Heel erg bedankt!
Topvideo man, wow!
Dankjewel!!
12:49 I think I understand what he's saying. Urk has been presented in bad light so often by people with cameras that whenever the locals see someone with a camera like that, they have a good reason to assume that there is another person that is going to show Urk in bad light. And obviously looking different because of your skin color would make you stand out even more.
Yeah, I completely understand. To be honest, I was initially a bit nervous/hesitant to film at night at first because of that. I figured most people would think I'm just looking for drama, but luckily everything turned out fine.
I usually dont comment but i really appreciate this video. I was raised an ''Urker'', my family lives there, i speak the dialect and its a huge part of who i am. I moved to another place in the Netherlands because of my studies and i often get confronted with people that have lots of prejudices about Urk. I started to feel isolated and often had to defend my village, i still have to. Sadly they dont know how special it is to me and many people from there. Its such a great, warm and unique place despite the bad reputation it has in the media, which is often not justified in my opinion. Of course it has its issues but despite that, its always great coming back there to see my friends and family and speak the language which makes it so fun to be there. Ive lived outside of Urk for almost 8 years now and i cant wait to move back there someday soon. Thank you for this video!!
It means a lot to read this. Maybe through time people will start to get a different impression of your home🙏🏾 best of luck with moving back!
I got rid of my tv over 10 years go and just started watching youtube instead. Channels like yours is what made that decision more than worth it. Way better than any dutch tv program. Keep it up man. I’m always excited when I see you uploaded a video.
This compliment means a lot! You're inspiring me to make longer videos like this one to make the viewing experience more TV like haha.
Geweldig man, bravo.
Your Dutch is so good! And what an amazing video, such great quality production. And props to you for putting yourself out there. Your videos are getting better and better 🔥
Aw man, huge thanks! I think I've said it before, but I'm a fan of your work! Would be really cool to meet you and your husband one day haha
Hi Sam, You did a great job editing the footage about our nice village. Thanks so much for this nice piece over the most beautiful place in the world 😊
Alice!!!
That is a mix of low Saxon and Frisian, easy to understand.
Once I was editing the video, I realized I understood a lot more than I did in the moment haha.
As Urreker I haven't heard of it having Frisian in it but yes it is a variant of the Low Saxon language with Low Frankish influence
@@SlashProductsI'm a "vreemde" living on Urk. I understand Twents and Frisian and Urker and in my opinion it really is a mix of Dutch, Frisian and Low Saxon.
Yeah, I understood it too, and I know Frysian as well.
Frysian is more similar to English than Dutch is to English
Translation for the Urk dialect bit on the boat at 4:22 "I am now speaking in dialect. I can tell you something about this boat. We have had this boat for twelve years and we go with it to Amsterdam. We sail with it to Vlieland. We were planning to sail to England for five year, but that got canceled."
Interesting choice of subject. The Urk vibe is definitely a part of Dutch culture and actually resembles many US communities based on religion.
Good video! You were right when you told me (We met in the tram last Sunday in Amsterdam) I'd like this one, it definitely shows a side of Urk that you dont hear about often. Keep it up! KR Tom
Hey man! It was great meeting you the other day! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
Shout out to that brother in Christ who was preaching the gospel at night and sharing the goodness of the LORD Jesus in his life! God bless you brother! Glory to YAHWEH 🔥 ✝️
Amen🙏❤️✝️☦️🔥
Your smile and attitude are contagious it kept me watching the whole thing and with a big smile on my face. I love the fact you strike up conversations with the people in their native language. Bedankt voor het leuke filmpje
Heeeeel erg bedankt! Really nice of you to say this🙏🏾
I've lived in the NL for 25 and I've never done the kind of deep dive you've done into places like Urk. This is a brilliant video. i learned lots of interesting things about the town and its history. I love the golden earrings on those guys!
Thank you for this!! And yeah, the earrings were cool haha
another lovely video!! You're living the life man, exploring new cultures and connecting with people from all over. Hope this journey takes you far and you can explore everywhere you desire!
Thank you, Duncan!!
Prachtig stadje! Prachtig volk!
Je bent altijd welkom
Excellent video, Sam, a very comprehensive overview of Urk and the people of Urk. You were very well received there by everyone you met which must have been so heart-warming. Really well done, such compelling, informative viewing. Your Dutch is also very fluent.
Thank you, Dik!! Always great seeing you in the comments. I appreciate you taking the time out to watch the video and for leaving this feedback :)
Love this video! so great to see how you are open to things most Dutch people take for granted or already have a preconceived disdain for. My grandpa is from Urk so I've always had mixed feelings when it got to be in the national news but specifically love how you also showed Urk's unique characteristics and what makes it special.
Really awesome to get this feedback. Thank you!
Heel erg bedankt Petra!!
wow, i am from the netherlands, and i never ever been to urk, or even searched what Urk look like, but i want to thank you for your great video about Urk it learned me alot! i subscribed!
Another great video! I think nobody did such a comprehensive video series of the Netherlands so far. Good job. I think the dialect threw you off a bit at first, but after a while it's pretty understandable.
Thanks, Hunchback!! And yeah, I noticed I understood most of it while I was editing and watching it back.
You have such a friendly and positive personality, it makes watching your videos even better! God bless and keep up the good work:)
Really nice video! The pacing was especially well done. It was constantly interesting throughout the whole video, and showing Urk from various sides while overall maintaining a positive spirit is probably the best approach to maintain a certain neutrality.
Your video’s are getting better and better. Well done. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you! I really put a lot into these videos, so it means a lot reading these comments!
Woah man, I've seen some videos of yours a while ago, but your Dutch has improved so much man! Actual proper conversations, really impressive!
Thank you! Always tryna improve🙌🏾
Your laugh is so genuine and you're really polite. I'm glad you could do what Dutch media couldn't. I am from a different part of the Netherlands so I had all the preconceptions about Urk as well, the negative ones but you showed their real side. I think if people are polite towards the people they interview and show a genuine effort to interact and listen to people as you did we would a very different type of view of a lot of places. Thanks man!
Ha Sam, cool video! I don't suppose you remember me from the Language Cafe back in June, but I grew up in this town so you already met one of those friendly folks 😉
Hey Jacob! I'll be honest, off the top of my head the name doesn't ring a bell, but I'm sure I'd remember you by face. But nice that I already met an Urker prior to this video haha. I hope you enjoyed🙌🏾
Really great stuff, can't wait to see where this is channel is going
Thanks!! And me too!
Here from Not Just Bikes. Big up ya self family! Great video
I appreciate it, man!
I really enjoyed this video man! And props to you for your dutch, it's such a hard language to learn
Thank you for watching and for the feedback on my Dutch!
As someone who is from another well known Bible belt/fishing town I really appreciate this video and your honest and open attitude. People really are quite prejudiced against towns like these and people from there, and yes, some of that prejudice is based in facts/truth but a lot of it is also not understanding what it's like growing up in a tight-knit community like that.
I appreciate you sharing this!
@exploringtheforeign ☺️ I really like your content, it's very unique and fun to watch!
Thank you! It's always inspiring to make more videos when I read comments like this.
This video was really great and I loved how you went about it.
Thank you!
This was such an enjoyable video! I can guarantee you when you come back alot of people will recognize you for this video. You should definitely visit at Urkerdag :)
Thank you! That'd be funny being a mini celebrity in Urk haha. And I'm thinking about it for Urkerdag!
Loved the video, very informative.
Thank you!
This just shows if your intentions are good and you are respectful towards "their" believe and way of living then you won't run into much problems. Urk is a beautiful place and the people are nice and hardworking. Respect for making the documentary and nice to see how well received you were in Urk! God bless
Love your videos man,, you have such a positive vibe
Thank you, man!
Editing is getting good !
Appreciate that!
this video was so much fun. people are really inviting when you treat others as you would like to be treated
Thank you!
Amazing video as always Sam!
Appreciate it!
I never leave comments, also i dont know you, but what an awesome video, as a native dutchman i really love this insight. You are awesome and so respectfull. Love it! 10/10
Heel erg bedankt Max!!
Funny fact. Urk the town even has its own reality serie with the same name😂😂😂 Urk is also the oldest town in the Province Flevoland cuz it was allready inhabited before Flevoland was build
Schokland. What am I? A joke?😉
Hey Sam, cool video! As some one from Urk and who wore 'kotteroorbellen' (Urker earrings) for 30 years. Did you know if you drown, the first that a body loses are the earlobes. So who told that story about paying the burial? :)
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the video! :) And the earring story was shared by multiple people throughout the day, but more than happy to hear if that's not the case haha
Great Sam, thank you for sharing it with us, friendly people in Urk
Thanks for watching!
Nicely done! If there will be a next time then you should try to visit a practice session of one of Urk's fisherman's choirs.
Last summer I spent only half day in Urk. I was surprised how beautiful the entire village is. Sadly I did not manage to have any contact with people from there because I was there for super short period of time. All the people in the video seem super fun to hang out with. One day I will go back and I hope I will manage to make friends like you did so easily and I also wanna party like a local too😁
Dankjewel! En zeker😁
The main thing I know about Urk is that Appie Baantjer was born there, and his main figure de Cock was also born there. In his books he often talks about what his mother said to him when he was a child. (I use his audio books to fall asleep for some years now. Because they are pretty predictable in their language, and not very exciting)
The tour guide mentioned this! But I didn't keep it in the final edit of the video, but I'm glad you pointed this out🙂
@@exploringtheforeign you’re welcome. 😄 He’s more interesting for old people. As I say, I use him to fall asleep. Before that I used forensic files. (I know Trey Gowdy from forensic files)
You are so awesome Sam! I wish you could broadcast this on travel channel.
Appreciate you, uncle!😢🙏🏾
Het feit dat ie echt naar Urk is gegaan is geweldig, top 👌 Btw: the Netherlands has a privacy rule that you have to blur out the “nummerborden” if you upload a video, I saw you didn’t do that, so maybe for next time?
As a Dutch speaker for the last 47 years ( originally English speaker) I have no problem understanding his dialect.
Dankjewel!
Grew up next to Urk in a town called Emmeloord, had guys in my class from urk in highschool and collage. Worked in urk for a few years during collage. If they like you they let you know and if they dont they also really let you know. Different type of folk but if you find your way with them they truly are very loving.
I appreciate the support you've shown for all this time!
We had a good time exploring the foreign! 4:26 ''Now I'm talking in dialect. I can tell you something about this boat. We've had this boat for 12 years now. We take it to Amsterdam, we sail to Vlieland (an Island). There was a plan to sail to england for 4 years but that unfortunately couldn't happen.'' Great video man! Loving the content :)
bro I'm reading the interview you did with DeStentor right now, what a nice surprise!
Crazy stuff! Glad you got a chance to read that! :)
People always hate on Urk, but during the 'Watersnoodramp', the disastrous flood in 1953, they were amongst the first to help the people in Zeeland out. On a sunday, nonetheless. Bedankt, Urkers!
Great video. Informative and entertaining. We'll done 🙂👍
Thank you!

Lekker man! Goeie objectieve rapportage van Urk. Mooi gedaan kerel.
Bedankt!
wow, sam - this video is so well done! like from start to finish. extremely entertaining and informative. so so good. i have to ask, though- what were y’all drinking at the bar? that red drink in those tiny bottles. 😂
Really appreciate this feedback! Thank you guys🙏🏾 And ahh, great question! I meant to put an explanation there but forgot to add it, but that's a typical drink from Urk called "speatjes" and it's cola mixed with this alcohol called Berenburg!
Wait disregard my previous comment haha, I thought you were asking about the drink in the glass. The shot drink is called "Flugel" 😁
The red drink in tiny bottles is Flügel. It's red wodka mixed with energy drink. You can get it at most supermarkets and liquor stores.
You 2!!! How have you never tried Flugel yet?!? It's ultimate 'teenager' Dutch thing/drink! y'all should go visit a 'shotjes bar' sometime and try it (don't forget to put the cap on your nose before drinking it) Aswell with 'boswandeling' and other Dutch classics!
Thank you very much for this nice impression you gave of this little town I was born many years ago.
Glad you enjoyed!
I was in Urk a couple of months ago as a military re-enactor during the so called "Urk in Wintersferen" event. The whole town was dressed in their traditional clothing and everybody participated as if we were still in the 1940's. From the start it was clear it was still a very tightly knit community, but I envy the way they kept their traditions, such as through clothing, language, etc. This is something I hope to see return to the part of the country I'm from (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen).
Hi Sam, loved the video!
Hey Lily! Thank you! And thanks for watching😁
3:57 I think this man just invented the new town slogan. Urkers are Workers!
Hi Sam, As an Urker, in my opinion this is actually the best report of Urk out there. Unlike the books and tv shows and online articles and social media posts that only show the bad side, you have a positive outlook. Thank you for the lovely personality you have. I love that you met those nice people who welcomed you. THAT is what Urk is like. I hope you had a great time! God bless!
Aw wow, thank you Anna! Really kind words to read🙏🏾🙏🏾

Echt hardstikke leuke video weer sam.
Dankjewel! Super leuk dat je het genoten hebt!
I read another comment about how you should get your own tv show here. And I agree! The first popular channel I thought of that would be a good starting point in general is BNN. Mainly focused on (young) adult audiences and discusses interesting topics like culture, international topics, modern influences, drugs, youth etc. Most of the hosts are young adults and are able to start their professional tv/journalism career there. Maybe you’ve known this already lol, but I thought to bring it to the table anyways! Love your content💜
Really makes me smile when people tell me this haha. Thanks! And I wasn't aware of this show/program. I'll have to look into it! I'm definitely open to diving more into media.
