    • They've got *some* proper equipment - perfectly good set of spanners, for a start. I must say, though, that using an old prop shaft and a bit of wire rope as a hoist is straight-up genius, and running the engine as a way of resurfacing the flywheel is excellent bush engineering (if a bit dangerous for my tastes). A friend who spent his childhood in Africa in the mid-20th century told me tales of similar tricks.

  • The way these trucks are so overloaded, I’m amazed that they can move at all. I’d hope it is a great repair, but I do believe the flywheel should have been taken out, fixed if possible, or simply replaced. • Easier?? I didn't see one part that appeared easier to do aside from the overhead of a full shop. Resurfacing a flywheel with a rock while the engines running does not look easy to me, it gets the job done but it sure isn't easy...

    • Would you bring your car into a shop where they told you that they were going to resurface the flywheel with a rock?

      @kennethsouthard6042@kennethsouthard60422 жыл бұрын
    • The initial bill will be low but in the end it will cost more because the job will not last. Neither the flywheel or pressure plate will make full contact with the driven plate which will result in premature slipping and another clutch replacement.

      @user-sl3hs6de5y@user-sl3hs6de5y2 жыл бұрын
    • @@atcmadness4351 Actually, it does not get the job done. While it will clear off the glazing from the old clutch, there is no way you can actually machine the surface and remove waves and warps with a rock. A rock held by hand only follows the warped surface vs. cutting out the warps which is done with a lathe. Using this method the new clutch will last significantly less time than one where the flywheel was machined flat.

    • But don't drop the gearbox on your foot, especially if you're only wearing 'Industrial protective sandals ! Jesus, imagine dropping that on your foot. A word of advice though, when removing a badly worn clutch assembly...ALWAYS take a big deep breath first, this way you don't inhale the clutch dust which can be injurious to your health. Smoking helps protect your lungs from asbestos inhallation. Never done me any harm. Love the refacing of the flywheel, that really is innovative, I wonder if anyone has lost a finger or two ? The gearboxes in these were notoriously weak, so he used old WWII vintage Clark 5-speeds which also broke. He used to keep a spare gearbox in the garage, ready to rush to the rescue. I, as a teenager, would help him do the job, often in the dust of dirt roads. We once changed timing gears at the docks at Darling Harbour amid the cranes loaders etc. We got good at improvising lifting trolleys and the like. I can see my old man's spirit in these blokes. Brings a tear to my eye.

The salesman assured him that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well,part from having super heavy steering, vacuum boosted brakes that failed , that ridiculous rear gearstick, it went through 6 gearboxes in 2 years, stripped the timing gear twice (once on a busy dock where ships were unloading, broke the diffs so many times, had the wet cylinder sleeves pinhole corrode through, Chassis cracked at the spring hangers, plus too many others to mention. Ten times worse than the old Commer "knocker" he'd driven previously.
