When Lieutenant John Gorman of the 5th Guards Armoured Brigade was riding on board the Ballyragget, near the village of Cagny in Northern France, he was confronted by a group of German tanks including the feared Tiger 1 and the King Tiger. He would later write in his book about the encounter, “It was horror personified.”
Determined to take down the King Tiger but knowing that the gun of his Sherman is near useless against it, Gorman turned to his driver and ordered “Ram it!”

I like how the driver doesn’t even question why he’s gotta ram the tank. He just goes. I like his attitude.
Well, if he rams it then the turret can't fire it his tank. Boom Shaka laka
‘Aight listen I know y’all have children’s and families and stuff but listen we gotta ram that king tiger-‘ ‘Ok’ ‘Wait what?’ ‘Sure.’ ‘Oh ok, just kinda thought you’d be reluctant’ ‘Nah’

Ensign Crusher certainly looked worried in Star Trek TNG best of both worlds when Riker said something similar lol 😊
There is one small detail missing from this: During the initial flight from the Sherman's wreckage, Gorman jumped into a trench, thinking his crew was there. Instead, it was actually the Tiger's crew, who glared at him, so Gorman saluted them and ran off to join his own crew.
Seriously? 😂😂😂 I would love to see that
lmao they where are shooketh
With a cheeky grin I might add.
That's just hilarious lmao

I like how tankers were taught that ramming was a bad idea Yet this guy without hesitation yells “RAM IT!”
Well, he knew his main gun won't even budge the King Tiger's armour, but the sheer force and mass of his tank could... It's like kamikaze but for tanks lol
Ramming is a bad idea because of all the moving parts of a tank it would destroy or damage, but it could be argued that the tank on the receiving end is guaranteed to have a bad time.
Usually a terrible idea, but a 75 Sherman Vs a King Tiger is a good rate of exchange. 489 King Tigers built. 49,000 Shermans built.
@@peterni2234 I'd think the same. If it were any different, that Sherman commander would be reprimanded or possibly court marshalled for bad use of military equipment. However, since he out of his way to salvage the situation and do a equivalent exchange, he was given a pass.
@@steveholmes11 Finally somebody with common sense, sacrificing a Sherman to destroy a king tiger is a no-brainer.

Too underrated
"Vroom vroom, bitch."
In easter front it was a normal tactic. I was a bit suspicious about how true this story was, but there's actually pictures of his Sherman and the Tiger 2! what really surprised me is that it wasn't any normal Tiger 2, it was one with the original turret before it was redesigned Edit: basically the Tiger 2 had the Krupp Early turret, also known as the porche turret, this is rare as most of the turrets were salvaged instead of being used as they were replaced by the Krupp Production turret, also known as the Henschel turret

According to the wiki when the 2 tank crews bailed he joined the German crew by accident, saluted them, and left to find his own crew.

That's what happens when you got no guns.

Was this not the same instance, where when one of the crew members of the Sherman that rammed the Tiger 2, scrambled out of the tank, and saw a crew running into a ditch so he followed. This channel is a gold mine for these types of stories
If your wondering why the tiger crew retreated their turret was probably locked in place by the impact, and its sprocket may have been damaged so the tiger was practically useless. Plus it's armor may have been dislodged making it easier for a tank like the firefly to penetrate the new weak points
Remember it was hit by an HE round at point blank too, even if there was no penetration the pressure probably broke some hydraulics and small moving parts needed to turn the turret
@@bens4801 not to mention even if it was operational the tank could not move making it a sitting duck to long range fire from artillery even if there was none you'd prob not take the chance
You'd also need to consider the sound reverberating throughout the hull. Tankers can go deaf from the sound of a direct impact on the hull, if not then they be heavily disoriented. On top of regular technical faults, its probable the crew thought something was gonna blow and booked it. The disorientation could also probably be why they didn't kill that one Sherman tanker that got lost.
being a late war german tank, i have no doubt the HE shell could do more than a bit of damage due to the poor metal qaulity
When the Tiger I was fielded, their crews were handpicked from batches of experienced tankers. But when the Tiger II _entered chat_ they also tried to put experienced tankers... but were less easier to find, at least still alive. So young crews were indeed assigned to the latest German technology, Otto Carius lost a Jagdtiger in his platoon to an extremely inexperienced commander, for example. Thus, if many times the simple ricochets were beyond the nervewracking treshold of the crew, imagine a relatively inexperienced group of young men hit by a 30+ ton "round" 😂
the shots of those shells flying across the battlefield and hitting tanks are amazing
It is remarkable how far the graphics and animation have come on this channel. Good job!
This animation of the tanks firing was astounding. Well done narration and animation
To the King Tiger tank crews made out of flesh and blood, getting rammed by a tank is no joke.
@VinAr Run the 75 Sherman is capable of killing both a Tiger 1 and 2 from the side or back, don't underestimate it.

One correction, the Tiger II used a modified version of the Pak 43 gun, not the Flak 88. The Tiger I was the tank that used a heavily modified Flak 88 gun.

Also the turret in the video is not the right one. The rammed Tiger II had the early version, in the video it is the late version.
Colloquially, this tank was used [Königstiger, which in German in the zoological context refers to the "Bengal Tiger". However, the literal original of this name was commonly adopted as the "Royal Tiger" (English: Royal Tiger, King Tiger, Russian: Korolewskij Tigr) [4].

It is true that tigers had a lot of mechanical problems and were often abandoned or easily destroyed because they broke down. But in battle these problems didn't make a difference for the allies, both tigers were a nightmare even if you were in a tank that could out maneuver it. Now imagine seeing a tiger II and a Tiger I at the same spot, it's something you'd only hope to see in a dream.
Or a nightmare
Military History Visualised does a good touch on this topic as well I'd say. Ther German tanks were effective when handled with care. It was just that the effectiveness was too good such that the enemy never bothered for a fair fight. Hence, why these heavy tanks often broke down before they ever saw combat. Simply put, they were forced to pursue the enemy when they were clearly designed for head-on engagements. It sounds the same when from a practical standpoint its far too different.
This was true for many tanks, not just tigers. T-34 for instance broke down more often than the tiger did. Ofc, you never hear about it since its meta to criticize the big cats.

Did you know the tanks needed big motors with huge amounts of horsepower not to carry the armor but for carrying the weight of the crew's balls?
Evil will not dominate while men like Gorman and his crew are willing to stand up and be counted. The ram against such a heavy tank is close to suicidal. The fact that Gorman kept on fighting, until compassion for a fallen comrade moved him says so much about his character.
Absolutely amazing quality animation and storytelling!
Just one thing I noticed. The turret is wrong. From the accounts I remember, the tank used the Turret with rounded cheeks. rather then the one displayed which has flat cheeks. Otherwise wonderful.
