It’s a cold, foggy morning on September 19th, 1944. At an allied camp near the town of Arracourt, France.
2nd Lieutenant and Platoon Leader Ed Leiper waits anxiously by the command tent alongside his Commanding Officer and Company Commander Tom Evans. A communication comes through - Enemy tanks have been spotted !
A few moments later M-18 Hellcats of the C Company 3rd Platoon roll out of the base led by two Willys Jeeps. What happens next is an Epic tank battle through the fog of American Hellcats vs German Panzer 4s.

You see the bazookas underwing on a Cub and have to think, "No way, Rosie the Rocketer makes a cameo in this one?" But of course it's that guy. What a legend. Very impressive for four TDs to take out 14 tanks with only two knockouts and a mobility kill in reply, also. The Hellcat wasn't a popular machine in the army, nor did it see particularly wide service, so it's nice to see its moment in the spotlight. If I may make one critique of the video-your animations have progressed to the point that I would have expected to see the crew in the open tops operating the guns. These Hellcats had phantom loaders! Anyway, thanks for producing it.
The M18 Hellcat was one mean piece of engineering. Hellcats were one of the most effective armored fighting vehicles in the entire war.
also i'd like to see what damage the bullet does like when it hits, the insides of the tank are shown and the damages are shown
@@roxuub cool yes however there are two problems with this 1: this would be Incredibly difficult to animate as the level of detail would need to be extreme 2: although we often know roughly where was hit (i.e. turret side, hull front ect) it is almost never documented exactly where the enemy was hit. To show the insides and the damage, the tanks I sides would need to be modeled many times foe each hit. What I'm saying Is, it would be extremely time consuming and expensive

Was showing my parents an animation that I made on my dog the saw the pop-up for Yarnhub! Clicked it when it had 33 seconds but thought “Hellcats” were the planes and was a little confused. The stories you can find are just amazing. Keep up the great work!

As soon as I saw the “53” on the side of the Grasshopper I instantly knew it was Bazooka Charlie’s aircraft! This story was fascinating!

The first Panzer IV scene is so incredibly eerie for such a simple scene, it’s incredible!
The 76mm Gun Motor Carriage M18 Hellcat might've had a very thin armour, but it's mobility and hard hitting 76mm M1A1/M1A2 gun made it a hard-hitting machine in the hands of experience tankers
yet it was still hated by their crews
@@guywithpotatoes8266 Of course it was, because it had no armor and the crew were exposed to enemy fire. But when it could operate as it was supposed to, from ambush, it was amazing.
@@guywithpotatoes8266 That's because it looked like a tank and too many soldiers expected it to be able to ACT like a medium tank. Instead it was a self-propelled anti-tank gun. It wasn't supposed to go one-on-one with a Panzer out in the open head to head, any more than a German 88 mm Flak was supposed to stand up to heavy artillery shell bursts around its crews.
My father was in the Fourth Armored and participated in this battle

The Hellcat has always been my favorite WW2 tank destroyer. It just looks nice, and the turret gives it versatile options compared to casemates.

When the generals go scouting ahead, I believe we see the most natural and beautifully animated scene ever on this channel; all walking and running animations were seamless and when behind cover, Dwight's excpressions and body language were near perfection. The spotter plane is non-other than bazooka Charlie. He fitted six bazookas to the spotter plane as a close support aircraft like the a10
Man in the past few videos I have seen people commenting on how much your animation has improved but in this video some scenes made me feel as if I was watching a movie.
When I saw the scout plane somehow engage the panzer collum I thought "No way its the Rosey the Rocketeer" and thought its yarnhub doing some references but I was amazed it was actually Rosey. a bunch of legends in one video very good work yarnhub
Would you ever consider covering the rest of the battle of Arracourt, where a vanguard force of Shermans from Patton's 3rd army mauled two Panzer brigades equipped with supposedly "Superior" Panthers so badly they ceased to exist as functional units?
this was the start of Arracourt.
They were superiors but the Ctew was mostly unwell trained

@@charles07km83 agree, with same experience of crew, the Sherman's would've got no chance against the big cats
@@thehighground7732 While it's true that the Shermans had a more durable transmission, the Panther having a transmission with a short lifespan wasn't as sever of a problem for the americans as they could be shipped via trains to get repaired at factories. The transmission issues derive from it's massive 45 ton weight, which did mean it had more armor than most other tanks at the time so they're technically superior in that fact.
Those weren't pistols the 2 officers were caring while scouting. They were M1A1 paratrooper carbines that were only issued to paratroopers during that stage of the war.

Arracourt was one hell of a fight. Greatest Tank Battles has an episode on it. Hellcats, shermans, tigers, panthers, bad weather, terrain, air support.
Everytime i watch these animation videos, i always wished i know how to animate like this.
I was in a Bradley crew we deployed to Iraq in 04. My grandfather was in a tank in WW2. This was a great video. I literally felt like I was losing my platoon around me. Ida def been the one that went for cover. You can’t fight out in the open for long. Be the vehicle that survives and does as much damage as possible.
Just went back to watched the video on Rosie & the Mad Major again. I have to say you and your team are a breath of fresh air, positive interesting, unique, and most importantly passionate about the stories you cover. Truly amazing and underrated.

Imagine blowing up an enemy Panzer IV just menacingly standing there out of the fog, only for the illuminating fireball causing even more Panzer IV's to appear like an army of lemming clones, all just standing there as well.

The fact that the American Hellcat tank destroyers were so effective is because of the 76 millimeter shells, that they fired, were HVAPs (High-Velocity Armor-Piercing) shells. The basic American philosophy for their use was as tank destroyers whereas our tanks were used to support our troops in various capacities and scenarios. Thanks; I really enjoyed this one.
Yes and without HVAP the 76mm was mediocre for 1944/45.
This is the 2nd video I've seen from this channel but it's already my favourite, I love these recreated combat stories, especially featuring tanks
Man these animations have come a long way. It's the perfect mix of realism and cartoony graphics for a short war story and I love it.
Watching these things I always got a vague Star wars: clone wars. Which I like about them.

If i remember these guys were also mentioned in the arracourt episode of history's greatest tank battles
I believe the majority of the tanks the Hellcats knocked out that day were panthers but it is great to see this animations of my favorite tank destroyers which is probably the best TD of the war

I remember this being covered in a documentary series called "Greatest Tank Battles" but it was a bit different. It showed Panther tanks engaging around 8 Hellcats.
Great video as always. Got the chance to see the restored Rosie the Rocketeer (the rocket armed scout plane) at the American Heritage Museum in MA last year. Had no idea it was there, but my kids and nephews were pumped to see the "crazy plane with bazookas all over it." Was surprised to find out from the awesome staff there that it was the real deal.
