One of the most famous Tiger battles took place on July 8th 1943 during the Battle of Kursk when supposedly a lone Tiger under the command of Franz Staudegger destroyed 22 T-34s. The Soviet's fielded a total force of 50 to 60 Russian tanks. How could 1 tiger hold against that many tanks? This episode is still hotly debated. What really happened there? We use both German and Soviet sources to shine some light on the incident and show you both sides of the story in this film.
For the German side we used internet articles “Panzer Aces Wittmann and Staudegger at Kursk” and “Revised footnote on Staudegger” by Christopher A. Lawrence, and also “Franz Staudegger - German Tiger Ace in the Battle of Kursk” by Evan Pinter.
For the Soviet side we looked through archive documents in Russian, scans of which can be found on the site of TsAMO, “Memory of People” page. First one is ”Excerpt from the War Diary of 26th Tank Brigade from June 23rd to July 6th of 1943”, second - "Combat Directive for units of 2nd Tank Corps for July 7th - July 8th 1943”, and third - "After-action report of 2nd Tank Corps for July 1943”.

  • The two-perspective approach gave me a striking moment... At first, I am like, "Hell yeah, Tiger, get them!", with Staudegger doing cool one-liners and coming up as a battle hero... ...but then we see the Russian perspective, begin rooting for Raigorodskii, and, suddenly, the VERY Tiger tank shot seen earlier through the German perspective as a glorious moment hits his tank and kills him and his crew, and the moment goes from feeling glorious, to just... sad. That's what basically what war is about, and this evoked the feeling to perfection. After all, behind every armored vehicle, behind every sight, are human beings who die because of some people sitting in a desk hundreds of km away.

  • You should do another episode about the battle of Kursk about the Tiger that refused to die. There was one Tiger that went into battle, got hit by tank guns, anti tank rifles, had it's Mg destroyed, the main gun got hit and froze in place, the fuel and oil tank ruptured but it survived the battle and later returned to base pulling a thick black line of fuel and oil behind it. Imagine being a soviet soldier: you threw everything against that one tank then it turns around and drives home.

    @karlsson7300@karlsson730029 күн бұрын
    • Like how some people can drive cars and some people manage to go in the ditch on a sunny Sunday afternoon. More relative to me, forklift skill varies a huge amount even among skilled drivers. Elite tank operators are just like anything else, the best of the best. So yeah the Tiger gets a little more credit than it's due. A good machine though is a good machine, and there's a lot of differences.

      @Yugemos@Yugemos21 күн бұрын
    • Deciding tiger crews was understandably picky, there were only about 1,000 of them produced total. A good crew can make any tank seem like an absolute powerhouse, but the Tiger’s scarily effective armor and range combed with the experienced crew made Tigers scary to fight for a reason. I do think the tank itself gets some undeserved credit that the crew really earned.

      @ravenwing199@ravenwing1994 күн бұрын
    • @@ravenwing199 I worded it really poorly, the tigers armor was good because it could avoid being penetrated IF the Tiger was positioned in a sniping position, which was where Tigers excelled at because of its powerful long range gun. Up close the Tiger could maybe take few good hits to the front before going down because it didn’t suffer from bursting into flames over what would be a non lethal hit like the Sherman tank did

      @paulgrundy6864@paulgrundy68644 күн бұрын
    • @@paulgrundy6864 Ok. Yeah that's pretty accurate but I would note that the Tigers were no less flammable but rather they were on the defensive. A disabled Sherman would be shot until it burned to avoid repairing it. A disabled Tiger was captured and couldn't be repaired by the Germans.

It could possibly penetrate a Tiger I armor. Also the angled armor of the T34 was quite successful. But on the Internet you will read a lot of Bullshit when it comes to tanks, especially with "it could not deal with a Tiger". Even a lot of people consider the Sherman as a bad tank because of this. Fun fact: Most tanks are not meant to deal with a tank, espcially not a heavy one. Tanks have a lot of different battlefield tasks. Also there have been only 1500 Tigers and a few hundred Tiger II. Most bridges and port cranes at these times could not deal with more than 30 tons, so it is stupid to blame advancing armies likes the late war Sowjets and US for not using much heavy stuff. So the T34 and the Sherman in all its variants have been quite successfull tanks of there time.

    • However it should be noted that most of those German "tanks" were just light tanks like the Pz I and Pz II (which literally only had machine guns for armament) and perhaps some early PzIII which only had a very weak gun Of course it is the same with the early T34 vs Tiger (the early T34 also had no realistic chance against the Tiger) Tank development and tank design evolved so quickly in a very short time In just 3-4 years from light tanks to big massive heavy tanks The Soviet KV1 / KV2 and the British Matilda and Churchill tanks were the strongest tanks at the beginning of WW2 in 1940 Then a few years later came the German Tiger and Ferdinand in 1943 that completely dominated the battlefield. And another year later in 1944 came the new Soviet IS-2 heavy tanks that could effectively counter those German heavy tanks again It was a constant arms race, but the Soviets and Americans had the most mass produced tanks, which gave them an advantage on the battlefield And of course the Allies also had 4 times more infantry men in their armies, which was also a very important key factor for deafening the Germans

IS-2 is superior to Tiger 1 in the shell size penetration, range of gun, and armour (frontally). • I really like the perspectives and the use of German and Russian language here, great job. It's interesting that a lot of the understanding of Kursk as a whole has come from Soviet sources that have only recently begun to be challenged as unreliable. There are also some German-led myths that pervade to this day, such as the idea that the offensive was called off because Hitler diverted units to Southern Italy. I think in this case it's fairly apparent the Germans embellished the role of Staudegger (who died in 1995, not 1991) for propaganda purposes, but the overall nature of the battle was more or less as they depicted it.
