In the first days of the war, Captain Władysław Raginis commanded a defense operation on the outskirts of the small Polish town Wizna. He and his unit of 720 Polish soldiers faced the impossible task of stopping a vastly superior German force: 42,000 men, 450 tanks, 108 150mm howitzers and 58 lighter guns. On the 4th day of the battle the defenders were running out of ammunition. The Poles had no other option but to surrender. The event that went down in history as the Polish Thermopylae would become a remarkable act of heroism and courage of the Polish troops when they fought odds of more than 40:1.

I think the first one I saw was the one about the "Night Witches", and then "Attack of the Dead Men", both have done things about the Christmas Truce, but I don't know if there was an actual collaboration there. I love how on Sabaton's channel, fans made comments on the Christmas Truce song saying things like "Finally, a song to replace Mariah Carey with at Christmas time". I think I might request it from my local station next year.

    • @@oliverhughes610 The problem is with words. While they sound polish they are a bit unnatural. The biggest mistake is "proszę pana". It is used when you adress your teacher, superior at work or a man you are not familiar with or not really close. In case of army you would use a bit different words with ranks like: panie kapitanie (capitan), panie poruczniku (lieutenant) and so on. Also some phrases are without any sense like "osłona przeciwogniowa" (anti-fire cover?). Still I like pronunciation. You could point some minior differences from an actual Polish but still it's on really high level. It's pretty impressive when you consider how hard Polish is for non-Slavs. Actually despite some flaws they did really good job.

Rifle info: It used an lead bullet to press a lot of energy to the wall of the tank. Not really penetrating it, as it was making the inside of the tank erupt in tiny red hot pieces of metal. The barrel was needed to be swapped every 300shots and it was one of the first anti-armor guns to be used like sniper rifles by their owners

I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.

    • @@Whatisthisstupidfinghandle That wasn’t until 1949, after WWII. The loss of so many men in WWI was part of it but the main reason was the government was broke and bankrupt after WWI. The other reason was that the quality of life in the “outports” was bad and they wanted the benefits the Canadian Government would supply. This is a vast oversimplification of Newfoundland Confederation and I recommend you do your own research, but I hope I at least gave a good enough jump off point for you into the subject.

  • You might conquer Poland, but you will never defeat them. They'll fight until the bitter end and even then they won't quit. Speaking of which, I'd love it if you did the story of ORP Poirun, the Polish Naval destroyer that attacked none other than the King of the Sea himself, the KMS Bismarck. Poirun's guns barely did any damage to the German Dreadnought but they were too fast for Bismarck's massive guns to train upon as she sailed circles around Bismarck as they drew Bismarck's fire while the Royal Navy task force closed in to sink him, Poirun's guns blazing and her radio transmitting a single repeating message to Bismarck -- "I am a Pole" in an exemplary act of Polish defiance. They only disengaged when they were low on fuel and out of ammunition.

The story of this battle was something like a local legend about the bravery of these men. Nowadays I can see it here! Thank you! Thank you for spreading knowledge about Polish bravery during this very first period WW2!

  • Your Cpt. Raginis wears wz. 1919 army officer cap, while at the time it was already phased out by wz. 35 four-pointed cap. So he wore either wz. 35 cap or round wz. 36 cap issued to Border Protection Corps, as he commanded one of fortress units of said Corps since March of '39, not mentioning that in battle conditions he would have worn wz. 31 helmet anyway.
