This is a great video about making a knife! No stupid music, no 3x speed on the hammering, and he knows enough about what he's doing to fill the dead time with useful explanation! I haven't seen the movement of metal explained during forging so intuitively before. I also like the fact it's real, no influencer polished presentation of scripted text, just him talking through the process. Glad I found this video!
Mahalo for the appreciation. These videos take time to do in our busy schedules. We try to keep it as real as possible, informative and Some laughs because this is how we actually are in the shop. Stay tuned. We are working on more episodes and trying to find a flow for content. Much Mahalos!
Thank you for this!! I’ve never forged a chef’s knife, but I will be trying one soon for a friend, so this was extremely informative (and entertaining). I love how you described the angles of the hammer-blows for each step. SO helpful.
Hi, this is Anthony Smith. I am 8 year backsmith in Tennessee I love your videos thank you all for doing what you do.
This video definitely deserves more views and I hope people jump on and subscribe. I love it when you do videos in this format. It's chill and laid back with tons of actual useful and applicable knowledge.
And yet the people with worthless knowledge are growing popular.
But that's not to say I don't agree with you...🥺🥺🥺🥺
Damn, the amount of force you put into those swings, television doesn’t do a smith justice.
I’ve wanted to be a blacksmith for a long time. Never done it cause money but honestly you kinda eased my worries a bit. You made a awesome lookin knife with a hammer, anvil and a forge for the most part. Imma save up and give it a shot. Your def the best blacksmith channel I have found and I watch a lot of blacksmith videos 😂
He definitely has an awesome channel. But he’s a Bladesmith, not a blacksmith. If your looking for specifically blacksmithing i would have a look at black bear forge as well as a good few others. I started blacksmithing a few years ago and yea you really just need a hammer, anvil and forge to start out. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
@@tuskcustomgarage This was my first set up: i.imgur.com/pxywv71.jpg Literally less than $100.
@@tuskcustomgarage John is amazing. I've enjoyed his insights. 👍
You don't need equipment to forge it does help but you can slam steal on sledge hammer face!
Well that was two months ago when realized I loved the idea of being a blacksmith. I did change my mind on blacksmithing as a whole and focus on becoming a bladesmith. I now own a anvil, angle grinder, forge, and vice. Got it all for as cheap as could while still getting quality stuff. Tried my hand at making my first knife recently and gotta say I respect Mastersmiths so much more. It is hard! But I love it. Def a workout. It’s satisfying to see my creation slowly take form. I also have now realized how easy it is to get upset over a small blemish. Seriously it’s pure rage 😅. Love this and I won’t stop tell tell imma master bladesmith!
I've learned more from this video than 75% of the countless videos I've watched. Just....thank you
Great to see you on youtube Neil ! I like the story in this video, slow and chillin aura !
Neil is so fascinating to watch especially when he straightens out the piece. I really enjoyed the mic placement. It made him sound like a powerhammer which cracked me up and what made it better is he was moving that steel like hes a powerhammer. Conclusion... Neil is a powerhammer
Thanks for the insanely comprehensive explanation, bro I've never seen blacksmithing visually drawn out on paper, great job I'm a huge fan of this content
One knows one is in the right crowd when one can laugh and chuckle naturally
Aloha and Mahalo! I know I'm late, but I have to say this is incredible progress since you were on the show. Hard to believe that was seven years ago.
Man, what a swings! Thank you for teaching us, Mr. Neil!
I picked up more useful information from this video in 1 hour than in all the years of videos I have watched in the past. Many thanks Neil, a true craftsman. Cheers from Sunny Florida
You watch too much porn!!!
The dogs racing was easily the most wholesome thing I’ve seen all year. 🖤
man , you make a real good teacher ,thank you for making this , knive and the videos🙏🙏🙏 Much love , thank you 🤗you are also a bunch of beatifull people 🤗
This has been one of the most helpful videos I have ever watched on forging. I didn't really understand how to get a good profile, but you explained it well. Drawing it on paper and explaining the back and forth between hitting the cutting edge and spine was invaluable to me. I think a lot of other smiths don't take the time to explain like you have. Thank you Neil... Much appreciated!
Thanks for letting us watch you work! I feel like I learn so much from videos like this. I love your style of knives brother. Keep doing what you do 🤙
So much good info in one video!
You folks know how to work and play - both are important! I really miss living in Hawai'i!
Amazing content man. Starting out at 42 this is exactly what I need 🔨
I enjoyed every minute of this video. Record as many as you possibly can. I hope you understand how much your work inspires us amateur blacksmiths. Today is exactly 1 year since I made my first knife in my backyard with cinder blocks, grill charcoal, my wifes hair dryer, and a log as my anvil. Please continue to make content for the smiths that are hungry for the foundational tips. Going over your hammers and their uses, how to swing a hammer correctly, and the importance of reducing the grain structure and why/how the process works were priceless little pieces of information. I can't wait for the grinding and sharpening videos. Thank you for your passion. I can't wait to own one of your blades one day. Truly art ♥️
Hahaha funny how you started out, you must have seen the same video as me hahaha. Hope you're doing good and forging a lot.
Thank you for all your guys hard work ❤️🙏🏿❤️
Neil Kamimura, much respect. I watched a video of you forging and talking about your life experiences. It make me cry a lilbit. I know when I'm out at my forge, all I'm focused on is the craft in that moment. It helps me in a thereputic way. I can relate to your story. Thank you for being you, and doing what you do.
You are an amazing teacher. Thank you for this forging series.
Thank you for getting your children involved in the craft. Whoever gets this knife will be able to carry the craftsmanship of your family. Nice job!
Neil, this 1 video taught me so much incredible information today. I’ve only been forging knives for a minute, but I’ve been a steelworker and fabricator for 45 years of my career. Please keep doing this for us… & Thanks
great master class !
Neil - this was just fantastic. Thank you.
Been watching more than a few black smith channels...you gave a lot of good tips of what and how to followed up by explanations of what it does and why. Better than the videos I have seen so far. Thanks for the good insight and good watch. May you be forever successful in your ventures.
Awsome build mate, I'm hooked.
awesome vid, obviously well versed in your craft. thank you, hope you keep pumping these out for us.
Looking forward to seeing the next stages!
100% agree with the comments saying this 1 video has taught me more than all the others i have watched. great info here.
Love the long form video, can't wait for the next steps in this knife build.
Loved it! Thank you for sharing your process, shop, and experience!
Awesome job. That thing looks awesome.

You're One of the Best ( if not the Only ) Blade Smith's to actually take the time to educate the Ignorant among Us ( Myself at the top of the list btw ) ! Thank You !

Thanks Neil and co that’s an excellent video! A lot of good tips in this one 👍⚒
One of the best teachers of knife making I’ve seen on here ! Thank you. Wish I lived close to u. I would work for free
This dude is my favorite Forged in Fire Champ. I can't forget what he in the show after his blade was tested on coconuts "I won't hear the end of it back home if I made a blade that can't chop coconuts..." Keep doing your videos. All the best!!!
Great video!!
thanks man. great video
Heck yeah!
Great Lesson!! learned a lot!! I'm looking forward to doing this myself.
Ok my new favorite channel!
Thanks for doing this! I will probably watch this at least 10 times.
Super cool, down to earth, and informative. Lots of little tips just thrown off the cuff.
Thanks for making this clip.
The best one! Love from Italy!!
Ty. Enjoyed your video. Appreciated the exposition. Look forward to your next installment.
Mahalo for such an in depth tutorial. Sick.
I honestly enjoyed every minute of this video. I'm glad to see the actual forging process using the hammer instead of the press. Most videos I've been seeing, the Smith will trace the design on a piece of metal and use the machine to do the rest. To me, that's not forging. You got a new subscriber 👍
Great work! Appreciate the true artistry in your work 🙏
Can’t wait to see you grind this
Great!! Gracias Neil
"Know your steel Know your shadows Know your heat" Is such a great tattoo quote idea
