Too Like the Lightning sounds very immersive and intriguing! Definitely one to add to my TBR 🌖
After I finished Terra Ignota, it jumped up to be my 3rd favourite series of all time- overtaking things like Book of the new Sun and Malazan and Viriconium. The narration! The gender/family dynamics of the world! The politics! MYCROFT! Every time I picked it up I found it a delight to read. It has a bunch of shifts in narrative voice too throughout, while still remaining the same, even though that's not really a sentence that makes sense til you experience it- but Mycroft becomes even more Mycroft-y. It's so good :)
What I find most fascinating about the Terra Ignota series is the world building. Just reading the Setting section of the Wikipedia article is great. So much to chew on. There’s just so much about philosophy, language, politics, economics, sociology, and history. Reading the books was more intellectually engaging than I could handle. It probably would have helped if I was more intimately familiar with Les Miserable by Victor Hugo, the works of Homer, the philosophy of Thomas Hobbs, and most of all a half-dozen languages. I want to hear more of your thoughts, so I'll be watching my subscription stream.
Oooh, I'm really excited about Too Like the Lightning, you sold it well.
i just discovered that too like the lightning has a full cast audiobook adaptation, so that's going on my list for sure!! i hope you'll enjoy the tainted cup 🌙
YES! Terra Ignota! YES!!! 🤩 By the way, there is a very small booktube channel, Walking with Books, and he really does walk with the books.
Knowing you dislike Deathly Hallows has just made our book twinning to be just true haha Because I really dislike that book, half is boring the other half is super rushed, and everything feels like its been pulled from thin air. Too Like The Lightning is just wonderful and I can't wait to pick up book 2.
I just got The Tainted Cup through my library but I have to finish What Feasts at Night before I can start. 🌕
Gardens of the moon is still the best Malazan book for me 🤣🤣🤣 omg I used to read while walking all the time too!!!!! I really should start words of radiance 💀🙈
I just finished Too Like the Lightning today. I liked it and look forward to the next book. I think what I liked best about it is that it reminded me of Disco Elysium even if the tone and political content are very different. Still, it does have, a crime mystery and a supernatural mystery, 4th wall breaking and pretentious but self-acknowledging of that in a way that makes it fun, a mesh of current world cultures that makes the world feel alien, and a political scene that is very murky once you get past the surface impression. I guess it is now I imagine what Disco Elyisum would be from the POV of the upper echelons of the Moralist International.
of topic. The nebula nominations were revealed yesterday ^^
I feel like I’m going to love Too Like the Lightning when I finally get around to it. I finished Wall of Storms and it’s my favorite book of the year so far. Now I’m reading and loving A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall🌙
Let me prioritize clockwork boys.
I'm so excited to get this time this weekend and attempt to finish Too Like the Lightning. It's been a fun buddy read. Hope you enjoy your trip! I am also waiting for the rest of the books but they will be there when I get home from my escape trip on Monday
I read Clockwork Boys this week and I'm reading The Wonder Engine now and I'm really really enjoying it. I'm planning on binging Swordheart, Paladin's Grace and the sequels after. 🌗
I am on ch 7 in Too Like the Lightning, loving it! Thanks for the great recommendation!
🌕🌕🎑 Too Like the Lightning sounds really good! I love a good, weird science fiction novel. I'm weird in that I really liked book seven of Harry Potter XD. I am also reading the Stormlight Archive (specifically Oathbringer) at the moment, hopefully your re-read of that one will continue to go well. I am also reading Siege and Storm for my book club :)
🌘 I’ve been hearing good things about TLL from Stephanie! Now knowing you both like it I may have to move it up the list!😂
🌙
Very intrigued by Too Like the Lightning!
🌝 a smiley moon 😄
I *love* that you describe the way you feel about world-building the exact same way I feel.
I sometimes read a book on the treadmill. Not really out and about because I’m the type that would run into something. I love Clockwork Boys (read with the second book immediately). The characters in this duology are some of my favorites.
🌕 🌱 🌳
Glad you're enjoying your reads this week! I'm with you on caring more about characters and world building than plot. If you ever want a self-pub cozy series with those characteristics, try Cinnamon Bun or Fluff by Ravens Dagger - so much fun!
I jumped when I saw the thumbnail! I literally searched TLTL and Ada Palmer on your channel a few weeks ago, I was certain you would appreciate it, but it seemed you hadn't gotten to it yet. Dammit, Mycroft! So glad you ended up picking it up.
Oooh with how much Ben and now you have loved Too Like the Lightning, I am completely sold!! And gosh I am so excited to do my own Stormlight reread later this year. Hope you had a good trip, sending love your way!! 🥰
You reminded me I have a copy of Too Like The Lightning. Clockwork Boys is very good but beware that you’ll need The Wonder Engine (1 story in 2 books). Right now I’m reading Tainted Cup (beginning) and finishing The Secret Garden (loving it). Hope your trip goes well 😊
