The Mazda 3 Turbo has a special trick up its sleeve, AWD. On the outside you will discover unique 18in wheels, optional aero pkg and full LED lighting. On the inside there is an upscale interior, sunroof and 8.8in infotainment screen. Under the hood is a 2.5L turbocharged engine and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with AWD. Is the 2023 Mazda 3 Turbo a BETTER sport hatchback to BUY than a VW GTI?

  • Got this exact car but in black 2 weeks ago. Most interesting part about it is how satisfying it is to drive at speed limit. I don’t even enjoy accelerating hard and speeding around in it. Something about turning corners at a nice pace just tickles the soul with this car. Probably the G vector control thing they got going.

It's not that stiff, it's smooth feels like you can drive it for hours without pain in upper or lower back. So, if the feeling of a drive is the same with new Mazda 3 turbo, it's great every day car and plus gives you a bit of that fun through acceleration, speed etc. At the end, it all comes up to individual preferences... My belief is that Mazda gives you comfort in combination with fun and power perfectly balanced!

I do however wish that the top trims engine, which is really really good, was available in a 6 spd manual. It’s Japanese so its going to last 15 years 400,000 miles. Now the 7spd PDk auto in the GTI is nice, but, the better car to buy for your money is the Jetta GLI with the 6 spd manual. It is a very well made car in its segment and uses the very good ea888 engine with a very good user interface and the interior that the GTI should have gotten. • I had a Mazda speed3 turbo from 2010 to 2020 in blue. It was a great car until somebody rammed it while it was parked in front of my car in 2020. I thought for sure that the insurance company was gonna declared it totaled so I bought a 2020 STI. But after a week at the shop, the insurance company told me that they fix it. So, I ended up selling it. That car was great except for the torque steering when I really get on it. Nothing ever went wrong on that speed3. It was a great car. I also think that it looks better than the current one. I just wished it had the all wheel drive..

This whole thing comes across as a grown up Mazda Speed 3 for the current times.

    • NGL, I chose the Mazda over the GTI for the features for the same money but the GTI is def still the better drivers car too with better brakes, suspension (previous gen Golf R real IRS), DCT trans, front-LSD, and fairly cheap tunes that adds tons of safe power.. but the Mazda kills it in overall looks and all real and good feeling buttons on the inside on top of better stereo, AWD, sunroof, adaptive LED's, HUD, etc... so it comes down to personal preference, I took the Mazda and have dropped about $5k

  • As someone who works for a VW and Mazda dealership, I’d go for the Golf GTI only if it’s the previous generation. The newest generation is definitely fast and fun but that infotainment system gives me nightmares. Not only is it hard to use but it lags in the winter on cold days. Other than that the performance is head and shoulders above Mazda. The Mazda will definitely last longer and use nicer materials but the GTI is much more enjoyable with more “up to date” tech.

  • I bought 2022 version yesterday and I for sure like the features it has. Havent figured out all of them yet though. I went from suzuki sx4 diesel to mazda 3 so it's gonna take a bit of time to get used to driving a petrol car(it is a mild hybrid). With suzuki I am used to drive around 2.5k rpm and since it has a turbocharger it feels like it speeds up quite fast compared to the mazda which isnt slow but like if I am in low rpms and going on a straight road or a bit uphil it wont really speed up,I have to downshift. Idk if there are some modes like the sport mode or something but I have noticed that around 3.5k rpm the car gains a big boost in acceleration. I was cruising at idk maybe 140 and then suddenly the car went up to 200km/h in a very short period. I gotta check out brakes and tyres cuz it feels odd when I have to break,I get a bit of shaking from the front wheels. Maybe that's just normal for this car and if it is then I for sure dont like that part of it compared to all the cars I drove and I drove suzuki sx4,fiat punto, seat ibiza,vw golf, kia etc.(I think my brothers vw had a similar braking when something was up with the front wheels(idk if it was tyres or something similar))

  • Looks just like mine! I got the '21 2.5T PP HB -- so it seems like the main difference is the fading LED turn signals! Personally -- I'm 100% behind the idea of eliminating touch screens in moving vehicles. Distracted driving is the leading cause of automotive accidents and death, these days. Whether it's people on their phones, or changing their HVAC on a tablet-style touch screen, my own personal experience has noticed the decline in attentive driving because of this completely unnecessary tech expectation. As a driver, I've had to avoid so many near accidents because of other distracted drivers. As a passenger, I've felt very uncomfortable with friends and Uber/Lyft drivers using touch screens, and when I've driven cars that rely on touch screens (like the Tesla Model X I drove for awhile) I noticed my attention being split, as well.

  • Had one of these as a rental car for a few days. I thought it was a pretty awesome car. I was surprised how much I liked the rotary knob for the infotainment. I find it much more difficult to use touch controls on the screen while driving compared to having my hand planted and using a knob or touch pad. My only issue is I am far from a skinny guy and the interior was uncomfortably small for me. Which isn't helped by coming from a challenger...

  • I chose the Mazda in the non-Premium Plus trim over the base GTI at the same price for AWD, sunroof, better stereo, far better buttons/ergonomics, adaptive headlights, etc. But absolutely, the first things I did was wider wheels and tires, blacked out the window trim, covered the interior gloss black and added strut tower brace as the chassis was not originally designed for the weight of the turbo engine. I have a JB4, intake and exhaust as well and hit the 1/4 in 13.5 but def miss not having LSD's and IRS still for sure. Also, still waiting for the imminent launch of an actual ECU tune that gets rid of the SUV powerband tune Mazda puts even on this car... The GTI is indeed still the better drivers car, but the Mazda is a good value if you are willing to do some mods and prefer the extra features.

  • People never seem to give the full story of hatch space comparing the VW Golf and the Mazda3. Everyone just says the Golf's is bigger, but they clearly aren't trying to put anything long in the back. My previous DD (that my son now drives) was the 2014 Mazda3. My current one is a 2018 (MK7.5) VW Golf R. I use my car to haul my XL frame road bicycles around to trails, and I can say that those bikes fit far better in the 3 than in the R. I could get a bike in the 3 and still fit a passenger in the front seat. In the Golf, no way in hell. The seat has to be all the way forward to get a bike in the back. I believe, when I was researching for my new DD, I found that the MK7 Golf was about 6 inches shorter than my 3, and that appears to be entirely in the hatch area. I guess I can't say for sure how the current 3 compares to my (better driving) 2014, though.
