Two most modern North Korean tanks are Chonma-Ho 216 and Songun-Ho, these tanks are kinda similar, but they are also very different, we are going to take a detailed look at them and see how do they compare to their modern counterparts, and if they are a threat to other countries, especially South Korea that now operates with K2 Black Panther.

That's kind of what the US does. The TUSK2 for the Abrams has the 120mm main gun, 20mm coax, a .50 on the commander hatch, a .50 on top of the main gun, and what I believe is a 240B on the loader hatch.

An outdated tank can still be deadly
chaosXpert If used right against troops without sufficient anti-tank capabilities, sure. But if you meet a more modern tank with a decent crew or an AT team who knows what they‘re doing, it‘s not pretty.
Still, a invading army would have to transport their tanks to the site, which is one of the reasons the US had the Sherman tanks, which were inferior to the German tanks. However, if the N. Koreans had T62 and other tanks in vast numbers with sufficient artillery and sufficient anti-aircraft fire to ward off a invading beachhead they could still put up quite a fight! However, it would be quite doubtful if it would come to that, being that masses of missiles would soften them up sufficiently then laying siege with continuous missile fire would overcome the resistance to a beach head, keeping in mind, this would not a one point assault but a several front attack, and there is no way that N. Korea could withstand such a attack and surly the N. Kore3an leaders know that, even if their people do not! However, there is no need for such a assault, being that N. Korea has really not given sufficient cause for for N. Korea has not attacked their neighbors, recently, unlike Russia! Oh yes, Russia! Russia might well join N. Korea, which would be a problem, not to mention the Russian agent in the White House, and his new mob, the Republican party that would support him, no mater what, even against the US it's self, as they have a recent history of that! Right now though, N. Korea is not a real threat, but criminal Trump, his new mob, the Republican party, and their propaganda media is!
@@chaosXP3RT Maybe it can be deadly, but not against state-of-the-art tanks that have all the advantages on the battlefield. Even if in the first few days the KPAAF saturates the skies, the USAF and ROKAF will have eventually ground them down, and then good luck trying to create an advantageous situation for your tank unit when the enemy has recon drones and strike aircraft everywhere. Also good luck trying to fight a guerilla war with tanks. They're a bit too conspicuous for that. @@QualityPen Sounds legit...
They are not totally useless though. Some modern Chinese tanks like Type 99A. Once the crew got a laser warning, they initiate the laser suppression system on the tank, which means the tank will shoot a much stronger laser back and blind the shooter or his device.

@098765 Craper it's like they saw the Germans goosesteping in old Propaganda footage and went "i want that"
"Are they a threat?" Well it all depends against whom. Against poor countries that don't have much of a technologised military I guess they would fare well, but against current leading powers, no chance. EDIT: I just quickly selected some countries that I thought have have no substancial military. After being notified that I chose bad examples, I did some research and edited my comment. Sorry for the mistake.

Lol, Even against europe, nort Korea can destroy them with nuclear
Well ya,many countries still just use T-55s and several ones even use T-34s,so,ya,agenst them, these tanks will do great
First thing to note [completely missed by the observer] is that the vehicles shown have 6 roller wheels, e.g. one more than T-62. So it's definitely more than just a simple T-62 upgrade, the whole chassis is substantially different, and they must have had a reason for that. If it's a manual loaded 125mm gun, then one might imagine that it should not have limitations on the length of APFSDS rounds that T-64/72/80/90 autoloaders impose. Question is - have they developed any ingenious APFSDS rounds? Cannot imagine that some youtube'er would know the answer. One might also imagine that some of that extra length went into spaced armor in the front to improve protection. Mounting SA manpads on the turret is a great idea, and no, ATGM's are not really optimized for anti-air defense. Based on those simple observations, I'd probably pay a bit more attention to those NK models, though it would be hard to imagine that their FCS and sights are anywhere close to modern standards.

Hi Red, could you please maybe do a video on the South African Olifant tanks? Thanks
Hey red blue here !! Keep doing good work and I am learning effect from you for Blue effect
Multiple aspects of that (earlier tank) make sense. Having an extra guy in the tank definitely helps if you expect a tank to become partly immobilised while still having some functionality, especially if injury occurs to a person. Older sight technology has benefits such as vastly lower computing capabilities so you simply do not need the computing requirements onboard. Some barely 32bit singlecore (no cache) chip like a motorola 68020 could be cloned (with a different instruction set) making the CPU (possibly gate array ASIC supported) easier for a nation to make whilst isolationist. The 68020 was used in Western Jetplanes (and sometimes, sort of, still is). Chances are, you'll have no cache backdoor if you have no cache. No ROP attack on a serial if you don't have a serial. Likewise for parallel ieee1284. Cache is a form of memory and extremely vulnerable to (for example EMP) electrical surge (e.g. weapons) or plasma. Heat photons likewise interchange with electrons and can be a big problem on cache. Sure, that (electrical-surge/plasma) will knock out a _"no cache CPU"_ too but the damage will not always be forever whereas a _"cache CPU"_ being damaged is almost certainly done for with almost no chance of immediate recovery. Whether or not the nation is North Korea using such lower priorities of tanks (while having many of them) a nation does not need to have the message that they will win but instead can get by with _"if you come here, it will be painful to you."_ They don't tend to have women in tanks either. It sends a message of what a nation is prepared to do. That is a propaganda (quite effective sometimes btw) and a morality game theory. Nuke propaganda has a similar vibe, signalling that you do not need a side to "win", per se.

The ATGM seems to be an admission of guilt that the AT rounds are either not easily aimed at range, or just lack penetration at range vs the S Korean K1 tanks. I'm pretty sure the K2 completely BTFO's the Chonmaho or Pokpoongho's.
I have a suspicion these tanks are what they are because the North Korean military leadership isn't *completely* insane. They expect that whenever they get invaded, their army would be squashed by the invading force in an open battle. For me, these tanks look like to be the "cheap mobile fort" kind of tanks. They aren't expected to last, they'll be hidden and/or fortified at key defensive positions. The mobility is there so they can retreat before their positions get swarmed. Even 40-50 years old tanks can take out the best modern tanks up close from a hidden position, especially if they know the weak spots. Within 30-50 meters, even a T-34/85 isn't funny, if it shoots the backside of your turret and kills half the crew, not to mention an APC can be easily taken out by that relic just the same. In other words, their tactics can be now easily seen. They will most probably use either flat-out guerilla warfare, or said tactic mixed with Zhukov's tactic from Kursk, fighting a retreating battle while drawing the enemy deeper and deeper into defensive lines. They don't hide this either and since there would not be any relief force from an ally, or from a secret army, the goal is simple. They know they will lose open war with South Korea and her allies and the North Korean Army is nothing more than the means to make the South pay dearly for any advancement into North Korea. Since South Korea isn't willing to pay such a price, the North can continue its existence, even though this is nothing but borrowed time. Their doctrine is to make themselves too scary and too costly to invade in contrast of what the victors would get from this victory. For this reason, these tanks aren't as bad as they seem since they are more than capable of doing what they were designed for.
Give it a couple of years and every tank and ifv crew will have its own personal drone with thermals, IR, laser guidance and datalink purely to counter this kind of tactics. Hard to ambush when half the enemy front knows exactly where you are and are drawing straws on which missile would be the funniest.
Is there any record of these actually seeing combat anywhere? I'd love to see the pretty orange colors when the turret brews up.
This channel's guy : Are they a threat? Javelin : I would like to speak with you.

First of all, any tank that works on a fundamental level is a threat.
Every dream of an A10 pilot... tanks lining up
Moot, the A10 has never gone up against mass SAM's or AAA.
"shiny tanks you've got there! It would be a shame if something happened to them, bbbbbrrrrrrrother!"
To be fair I watched Polish millenium military parade and recent (2018) North Korean. They appear really similar, but the Polish one was from the 1966, so even from visual side it looks just archaic.
Poland is stone age! North Korea f*cks Poland in *ss!
These tanks are cardboard cutouts on to of a vw jetta.
Interesting, I did not know that modern DPRK tanks had SAMs on them, along with dual HMGs. I assume that this tank configuration is designed for the purpose of providing an anti-helicopter capability for tank groups, assuming that they also have hoards of low quality tanks. Gunships would be a realistic threat for DPRK tanks. Not really sure if that is more beneficial than just having dedicated SAM vehicles alongside the tanks though. I thought the DPRK also had lots of T-72s as well.
Um, DPRK dont have T 72's only T 62 variants
Sale of tanks to the DPRK was very restricted and was heavliy monitored
Their currency has so little value I'm not sure anyone would want to trade illegally with them.
@@cleanerben9636 and if you got found trading with them, Guess what the UN and america will sanction you
@@wonkagaming8750 Yes that seems to be the case, no T-72s. I guess the tank mostly discussed in this video is the M2002, which was touted as a big deal years ago. Tanks aren't really their strong suit

is that your Warthunder account? Freemanproject? i saw the name pop up in the kill feed in the sponsorship video :P

They probably use mass wave or deep operations in their battle strategy so these would fight in a 5 to one ratio against a Abrams
Good strategy but Abrams are always in a 5 tank platoon and accompanied by infantry. Not to mention if they are also accompanied by Bradley's with their atgms which is likely.
Each Abrams carries enough rounds for the main gun to wipe out 30 to 40 NK tanks anyhow,&since the Abrams crews rarely miss it'll likely be closer to 40 NK tanks being blasted from beyond the range the NK's are even able to fire hitting anywhere in the vicinity of the Abrams. I'd be surprised if NK could even stand for long against an American Military from the WWII era.
M Heb Again nice meme but to be completely honest most of North Korea’s technology at the latest would be 1950s and 60s in at the earliest 1990s to early 2000‘s also it is a large militia of about 4 million so it was most likely see a protracted guerrilla war against any occupational forces.
M Heb also North Korea has a large stock pile of Kornet 4 missile systems so they probably make up for it in anti tank teams
@James Reilly no the Kornet missiles would probably keep them at bay tho
They can still be threat to M48A5K tanks in SK reserve force, and IFVs in the regular army. Since South Korean goal is not to win the war if there's one, but to have a perfect victory with almost neglectable casulties, we keep improving our weapons. We'll probably satisfy when an AP round shot from the best tanks of NK can hardly penetrate a helmet of an infantry rifleman of ours.
All a DPRK EW battalion soldier has to do is tweet about a celebrity nearby and weakling worst koreans panic and trample each other to death

The largest factor on the performance of these tanks it the nutrition level of the crew for sustained operation.
Is there any chance those AA-ATGM have a use against planes? I’m sure to a modern plane like an F-series or SU-series it’s not much but still curious.
So... what you're telling me is that these tanks are not powered by the tormented souls of dead children and the tears of their grieving parents? ...Huh.
In the hands of a good crew, any tank is a threat, even one from WW2.
A threat maybe, but not much of one.
No if you put the Best trained tank crew ever in a tiger and barely trained conscripts in an Abrams the Abrams wins
@@francescononefrancese617 Maybe.. What is the distance, time of day, angle of the shot. Who sees who first and in in range. Lots of things can happen to you in your favor it is not just who has the best tank. WW2 Tanks in the middle east in the 1960s were defeating newer tanks..
@@sldessel 1960s tanks were just slightly better ww2 tanks, it was just 20 Years after the war and technology was still not very good, an Abrams would win 99 times out of 100

I can't help but correct several inaccuracies. 1) Even though some sources insist that 216 is armed with 125mm, visual evidence suggests otherwise. The gun tube of 216 is indistinguishable from that of U-5TS, which is a strong point towards suggestion that it's 115mm. Sungun however does appear to be armed with a proper version of 2A46. 2) Although korean sights are not independently stabilized in horizontal plane, their FCS can have and most likely do have semi-automatic lead on - an electronic "helper" that tells gunner how far ahead of the target to aim. This kind of system was present on earlier T-72 models and, what is more relevant, "M" upgrades of both T-55 and T-62. Sure it is not as comfortable to use as a fully automatic lead on, but it somewhat gets the job done. 3) Upper glacis plate of both 215 and 216 has been redesigned compared to previous models and basic T-62. At least we do know that it's angle is different and more steep, which makes it hard to estimate actual protection level and definitely puts it somewhat above that of T-62, even without add-on plates. 4) 216 is likely not powered by 750hp engine. Both visual evidence and available official data suggest it has the same 1200hp engine as Songun. There was a report from a person who visited the KPA equipment museum in Pyongyang, and said that plaque in front of 216 stated that it's engine was rated at 1200hp. Furthermore, two tanks have very similar T-72-like engine decks, as opposed to model 215, which has a regular T-62 engine deck. Another thing I would like to note is that presence of an IR searchlight shouldn't necessarily suggest the lack of thermal imager. Image intensifiers could have been left there as a backup or as a ruse (it's a North Korea after all). DPRK has proven to be capable of deploying rather advanced equipment, and cheap thermal imagers aren't too hard to come across novadays. In fact, those rangefinder boxes above the gun have suspiciously too many holes in them, the ones installed on latest tank models.
It is also worth noting that fully automatic lead on with independent stabilization is not as universal today, as it may seem. Abrams didn't have it until M1A2, Challenger 2 doesn't have it. The lack of it on DPRK tanks is certanly not catastrophic.
Always like your vids. This is the second time I watch it. There no info, that’s because there’s nothing there. LMFAO
Didn't the Syrian army recieve fire control system from NK that could reach 4km laser range finder to their t-72, t-62 and t-54/55 some of the t-55 recieve thermal sight before they recieve aid from Russia in the civil war?

@Brandon Bennetzen Yeah as they are short, no armor, and a bulky weapon.
In reality, it depends on what they are up against - APC's rarely have the armour to stop a MBT's round or an anti-tank missile. Against a K2 or an Abrams that's very different, but again it's still who sees who first and gets the shot off.
