It’s Kim sized
Believe it or not, but the M2020 (this tank) is clearly a deeply improved version of the Songun-Ho launched in 2012. They lengthened the hull - perhaps to fit a more powerful engine - and fit composite armor plates around a molded dome turret which served as the internal core (dome turret is not very suitable for composite armor equipment). Additionally, there is a Kornet-based ATGM launcher (the Korean name for this copy is Bulsae-5), a seemingly remote-controlled automatic grenade launcher on the turret roof, and, surprisingly, an actual APS. So cool :3

@@nam430 my personal understanding and observation
@@jebise1126 I don’t think so
@@jebise1126 This tank was already in production pre-ukrainian war so it cannot be from there. That said APS are not as new as you might think, the soviet naval infantry were using it on their T-55AD's in the early 80's, and it was actively exported to China and the Middle East.
The fact that the smoke launchers (or active protection launchers) is recessed into the armour makes me think the outer shape of the turret is just stand off armour against HEAT and that the real armour begins 20cm behind that. Otherwise they have created needless weak points in the frontal armour that lacks about 20-30cm or composite armour.
well... maybe. on the other hand that may be very small turret on inside
Another person in the comments suggested that the tank is a heavily upgraded version of their Songun-915, which had a traditionally shaped Soviet style turret. So this lends credence to your theory of the shape of the M2020 simply being a cladding/cowling of sorts to make the turret shape more angular and suitable for the mounting of more systems.
@@L5GUK but wouldn't that prevent the layout change from the crew?
@@delfinenteddyson9865 Only if they actually used the exact same cast turret. It wouldn't be a surprise if they made a new cast turret to support the arrangement changes and additional systems, maybe with thicker armor, then stuck the angular welded shell over it to make it look like a modern MBT.

Thanks for the video RE. From the photos, what I can tell it's a copy of some other tanks and systems on tanks, combined in a single tank. But just because it's a cheap copy doesn't mean that it's bad tank. In fact we can't really tell of how good their tank is unless we see it in a real combat scenario.
True, but for all we know the places where composite armor should be, could filled with shit (Air, Sand, Cardboard, Ext)
@@RussianBiasEnjoyer It could also have real armor too and not sand or cardboard though. I know that because the west was saying the same thing about Russian technology... And in reality it's all speculations until we see it being used in real combat.
To be honest, it looks like what a tank amateur would do: put together all the stuff you like of every tank around the world and roll from there. The design is solid, it's got APS, Thermals and CITV, LWR, ERA and composites, probably blow out panels, a not awful silhouette and geometry, hopefully a better engine and transmission, and it has already been produced in some numbers (I'm talking about you, T-14. Where's the first batch, T-14?), so it's not a bad design. It's definitely expensive but it could work as an elite guard or breakthrough tank, given of course it receives enough support from air defense, artillery, demining equipment and EW warfare assets. Now I'll say that creating a tank this way is pretty hard, specially for a small county like North Korea, but maybe with Russian and Chinese support they can pull it off? Even if they only manage the more conventional stuff, they still got a solid upgrade over their previous tank, so for Kim that's still a Wim. (I'm sorry)
Even if they managed to make a solid tank, they still lack in many other departments, most notably their Air Force which is just pathetic but I suspect they think China would be coming in to save them again with the far more advanced PLAAF. A tank is merely a weapon system that required other system to work so it can do it's job. Without cover from the air, artillery and reconnaissance it would just pop like a can of coke 5 seconds into combat.
@@dannyzero692 I believe that, based off the example of the Ukrainian air defense shutting down the Russian air force for a good while, that a powerful enough air defense network can, at the very least, deter a superior air force from bombing your ground forces into oblivion. So, maybe the North Korean AA is enough to keep South Korea at bay? I'm not so well-versed on that so I'll leave it at that. Otherwise, here, you dropped this 👑

From the aesthetic standpoint, the vehicle does look pretty nice, I like how the mounting for the APS looks even if its a weakspot. Kim: Mom can we have abrams at home? Mom: but we already have abrams at home.
Definitely surprising to see it's an actual functional tank and not just a dressed up chonma-ho. When you really start picking it apart tho, it's not all that advanced as it might look. The APS isn't actually all that surprising, the technology has existed for a while now and it's likely drozd level of effectiveness. The thermal sights aren't too surprising either as NK could have obtained them abroad through various means. They could both be gen1 for all we know which would make them inferior to most. Blowout panels aren't too difficult to achieve either. Just a thick steel wall, a blast door, and panels designed to be the first point of structural failure upon ammo detonation. The composites look quite thin and likely aren't very effective. The turret front might have good protection but is riddled with weak spots like the big turret ring and the embedded APS launchers. Overall a big step forward for NK but doesn't appear to be anything all too special. If they can actually produce these in numbers, they will at least have something that can actually stand a chance in combat unlike the hopelessly obsolete older NK tank designs.
I have been waiting for this video especially with all the recent footage of these tanks
M1A1 turret, t14 chassis,t80 active protection system, bmp-2 tow lunchers
Gotta stop you there with the ATGM launcher + ERA change. When looking at the launcher, it seemed to have obviously moved to a horizontal stack rather than a vertical stack. This is most likely not to *make room for an era,* specifically, but I would instead say the placement greatly improves the tank's hull down preformance. Now, instead of pulling up to gun clearance position just to be able to shoot the gun and expose it's fat turret, it just has to show it's optics and launchers that are now in a way better spot for short to long range sniping at a greatly lowered chance of exposure. A NATO style engagement in the tank against other armored vehicles would probably be intended like this: Chilling in cover and concealment during a lull or large engagement. Commander peeks up with his optic and looks around. Finds a target and such. Gunner then can have the tank pull up so they can launch the atgms safely as they conveniently happen to be at the same height as his optic. The whole engagement can thus be done without employment of the gun as the atgm may be considered more effective against AFVs than the APFSDS ammo used. That just makes sense, though. It's also kinda ironic how this design may do NATO hull-down combat better than our NATO tank designs, isn't it!? 😅 Additionally, the tank has a top of hull and top of the turret era layout to kill top attacks. There's what's most likely anti-APFSDS ERA on the turret front and sides, unlike nato tanks. There's stock LWS. There are conventionally perfectly placed optics and ATGM launchers. They have that sexy M1 ring shot trap. The turret has large NERA coverage against RPG/ATGM style threats and is most likely an afterthought in the greater scheme of things in favor of APS+ERA+smoother shillouett against ATGMS+APFSDS, withNERA as a final protection. This and other not mentioned Russian/Chinese style design elements all acoustically come together to be alike the perfectly confused middle ground of Eastern and Western style tank designs! 🤣 But I digress! The added era blocks on the sides of the turret aren't even in a uniform configuration you'd wanna replace an existing and relocatable piece of hardware with for a permanent change. . . If they soley wanted to just have era there, they could have gone with a more compact and uniform coverage approach such as what they did on the turret's frontal arc or hull's sides. Thankfully, without a uniformly rounded foundation to go on for era addition like Soviet designs commonly used, they went with a rather uniformly flat faced design like NATO preferred to this point. That should make era addition easier just as we've already seen, again on the turret face where high preformance ATGMS and APFSDS are expected to come knocking, in defended position to defended position engagements. . . That or they're just cheap and desperate and needed at least some era there. . . 25/75 or 50/50 protection chance is still better that 0/100, right? Lol But more importantly, I'd be curious if a stored orientation for the launcher exists, weather manual by the crew, or automatic. There was a perceived benefit to this with the Bradley back in the day with it needing to store it's launcher for long distance rough terrain travel, and being able to have it in firing configuration during combat maneuvers. Weather or not the mechanical difficulties of a moving launcher system have been surpassed by now or not, idfk, but that may be something to consider. And we have previously seen the launcher in a vertical or possibly stored orientation, so why not? 😊 But idk, what do u nerds think? 🤔
Based North Korea, as usual
The only real Korea ❤ 🇰🇵
Real
Its actually cool looking
I would like to add that we don't know for certain if the tank actually has a thermal imager. The sight setup is similar to something like the Sosna-U, but it could very well likely just be a normal sight, with a night vision sight as well. A clear indicator of a thermal imager on a sight is the blue / purple glint to it. The infrared light thermal imagers detect are completely stopped and absorbed by glass. As such, they use germanium lenses which are transparent to infrared light. Seeing the blue light does depend heavily on the amount of ambient light that is on the sight in the first place, and to truly see the strong blue color, it must be viewed at an angle. However, even dead on, with decent light, the blue hue can still be seen. In the videos North Korea has released, there isn't a single frame with a strong blue color, or even just a blue hue. It all looks and reflects identical to normal glass. Could it just be the slightly overcast weather? Possibly. But the blue light should still be noticeable in the lighting. And given the other horrible design choices, like the APS launchers being imbedded into the armor, and the likely hollow exterior sheet metal cover to the presumably T-62 level internal turret, it wouldn't be a stretch at all.

Seeing as North Korea has already handed over sizable swaths of ammo to Russia (of varying levels of quality of course), could we see Russia use these tanks in Ukraine to shore up their own ever weakening stock?
As cool as it would be for Russia using North Korean tanks I don’t think they would
Russia can produce hundreds of tanks every single year. It would take over a decade for Russia to run low on tanks even at the current rate that they are losing them.
We'll never probably see that scenario. Russia has a lot of tank factory that can pumps hundreds of tanks in a span of 2/3 months. And now that the rate of Russian tank losses are lower than at the start of the Invasion, it's unlikely for Russia to ran out of tanks especially when their factory is on overdrive
Well, seeing how Armata is going, maybe they should just sign Kim a check, when they get bored of making T-90s...
Russia is not even close to running out of tanks. It's just that a lot of those tanks haven't been maintained in storage for almost 30 years, so they're bottlenecked by their refurbishment process.

could be turned off
@@viejitaloca2810 yeah, on all the tanks shown, because it's just something you do by default. Sure.
yes bro, im sure in every display ever they also have the thermals and trophy system always on@@LoisoPondohva
exatly , by default stabilizator is off. Most the case when you have nobody in the turret.
the turret looks like an abrams
Half the space in the front of the tank must be the driver seat to fit in Kim
What's most impressive is that Kim Jong Un somehow made it through that tiny hatch. I can't wrap my head around that.
What happened if armarata and Abrahams has a baby Result 🇰🇵💀
Look at the thickness of the drivers hatch, it looks like a paper plate :D
M2020 my beloved ❤
Mom, can we have T-14? No, we have T-14 at home. T-14 at home:
Hey at least the T 14 at home works
After seeing how their 155 ammo has performed in Ukraine, I expect there are also problems here as well.
Context?
I did not expect Kim to be driving the tank T-T
literally me when i opened kcna after waking up
Would be interesting as an event or squadron vehicle in warthunder probably for China
Holy shit their APS actually works lmao
No more iglas...😔
that shit looks actually scary. that be lookin like something from war thunder events
I bet the tank has a bunch of fake armor, it may appear to have thick armor but in fact its thin
The real question is: can they produce more than 9 of them
Hate to say these but they might actually can because what else they will be doing with their money? Spend it on improving civilian infrastructure? Establish a healthcare program? Lmao.
Time to add Korea as a new War Thunder faction
I first thought, it was made from cardboard Compare to earlier model and these, I am really impressed. And I think there are roughly 20 tanks which indicates they are in some production phase
2:12 Is that Kim Jong Un in the Tank. The Supreme Leader of North Korea himself ? Fascinating. How did they manage to squeeze him into the tank.
