  • Lol, my husband did a similar thing. I asked him to bring home eggs, he brought home 6 chicks, a week later I asked for more eggs again, he brought home 6 more chicks (2 ended up roosters, that's another story). Needless to say I bought my own eggs next time. Long story short, many months later, the girls give me eggs every day, and lots of fun chicken entertainment. I can't imagine my life without them now, I love them, and they are worth the daily effort needed. I am very grateful my husband "surprised" me. Hope your wife enjoys her chickens as much as I do.

  • FYI: if your chicken huddle by the door when it’s time to go in the coop. Like mine did. Worried if they’re going to get chocked by the run chicken door. Once the sun starts going down it’s to dark in the coop and they won’t go in because they can’t see. It took me a while but it was a simple fix. I put a light inside on a time to turn on at least an hour before the sun goes down and off an hour once it got dark.

  • Very nice looking chicken coop. But in my opinion to make it the ultimate chicken coop it needs to be setup for the deep litter method. Basically you just need it to have 12-18” of space at the bottom for the litter to build up over time. This is the best and easiest way to keep chickens in a stationary coop design. The way it works is you start with a layer of dry wood shavings to cover the floor of the coop. Once that gets soiled you just cover it with another layer of shavings. You continue doing this for as long as your coop has the space for the litter to build up. The beauty of this method is the carbon (wood shavings) absorb and offset the manure load eliminating any smell and composting at the same time. I used this method when I started out with chickens several years ago and went a full 18 months before cleaning the litter out of my coop that housed 20+ hens. You could open my hen house and not even smell a chicken. And if you did it was time for a layer of shavings. When cleaning out the litter it just smells like dirt. Great compost for the garden. I would recommend cutting the bottom 12-18” off of you access door and making it a separate door that only opens when it is time to clean out the litter. This also works outside in their run area. You might start with a nice grassy spot for them but they will quickly destroy all of that grass. Once that happens get some free wood chips from a local tree company or saw mill and put that down in their run areas. I put a heavy layer down to start with then just mix the manure in as it gets soiled. That way I didn’t need to have a pile of Woodchips somewhere. Use these methods and enjoy your backyard chickens without the smell of the chickens. Good luck!! Thanks for sharing.

    • agree. i built my deep litter coop in 2017 and have never needed to clean it out. i just take out compost for the garden and add more straw. also his coop doesn't have decent roosting bars. i hope he retrofits some.

    • Wonderful tip! That is the method I'm interested in. Lots to learn about chickens! Where did you find the plans for your coop build and are there any chicken keeps books you'd suggest?

      @questions_galore@questions_galore Жыл бұрын
    • @@questions_galore I got everything from KZhead videos. Joel salatin is on I would definitely recommend on KZhead and the books he wrote. The coop I built wasn’t anything complicated. Basically I just made sure I had room in the bottom of the hen house for at least a foot of bedding to build up and still able to open the access door without any bedding falling out. Good luck with the chickens. They are the gateway “drug” into farming. We started with six. That quickly grew to to over 40 chickens ducks goats pigs cows and now horses lol.

    • doesn't this stink or rot? And how do you then use that composting for the garden without cleaning it out? Eventually won't it choke your chickens to death? LOL

  • This is amazing! This Video made me quite emotional, my family used to have chickens for many years. Trough living together with these great animals, planting our own vegetables and my Dad's hobby as a bee keeper we were able to live almost completely self-sufficient. In all those years my Dad did all these Jobs of maintainence and building things all by himself while also doing a full time Job as a Highway surveyor everyday. He got diagnosed with cancer in 2017, when he was 51 years old. Unfortunately, due to his therapy and operations, his body is no longer able to do physical work. We are very gratefull that he is fine so far and that he survived and is still with us ! Still there is always a bit of sadness left seeing him now not being able to do one of the things he enjoyed, being creative, making plans for new projects and starting to put them into reality. Thank you very much for bringing back some nice memories of the good old days! Your channel and projects are truly amazing!

  • Love the coop! Good Solid build. I’m super jealous!!! I’d use 1/2in galvanized hardwire cloth on the windows instead of plexiglass and add more windows on the other walls for ventilation. Chickens are fine in the winter, they’re more built for it than heat… it’s the heat you need to worry about. Predator locks are imperative. Raccoons, possums & squirrels can open simple locks. I put down a 2ft predator apron made of Galvanized Welded Wire Garden Fence, 2 in. x 4 in. Mesh from tractor supply around the outside of the run so predators couldn’t dig under the run and wrapped the run in the same. Everything with the coop is Secured with hardware cloth & added a wildlife camera & lights for night predators. I learned the hard way (and I live in a residential area where I didn’t think I had to worry as much) However you’re obviously an expert and have probably figured all this out! Again.. beautiful coop! Good luck!! ❤ (PS chicken math is a thing 🐓 🐓 🐓= 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 😂

    • It is a great coop, but I am totally with you on a raccoon proof lock on that door and wire behind that plexiglass. The heartbreak when we lost 2 of our 3 ducks is not anything I would wish on someone.

    • Take another look at the finished coop; he did put hardware cloth on the window opening so he can prop them open for ventilation without intruders. I do agree with you about the lock hardware, it needs to be something a racoon or squirrel can't open. Sliding bar locks are child's play for them.

  • What a beautiful job! That coop is absolutely gorgeous ❤️ My chickens..(and rooster) would love a building like this. We’ve looked a prebuilt coops….some we’re totally cool, some unimpressive, but all of them were ridiculously expensive. We built our own. Simple coops. But this is very impressive. I’m keeping this for hubby and I to do a build. I am also going to share this video with a few other backyard farmer friends. We have 7 hens, and are looking to add a few more. Silkies are very cute, have very sweet personalities, and are a lot of fun to have around. I’ve got Delawares, Plymouth Rocks, ISA Browns, Orpingtons, and Easter eggers which are not a breed per se, but they lay blue, pink and greenish blue eggs. Very pretty. In our original batch, we also got two roosters….surprise,surprise! One had to go! They didn’t get along. We gave him to a farm, where he is living his best life ever. ❤️❤️❤️

I sheathed the inside with the plastic sheeting like you see on the walls of a public restroom so we can wash the whole thing down, which we do once or twice a year. The floor is also the same plastic sheeting over plywood, but removable through the clean-out door to make it easier to dump the pine shavings we use as bedding. I was most interested in seeing how you were going to address weatherproofing the hinge side of the lid of the laying boxes, since I have a problem with leaks even with a drip strip above it. How is yours holding up to the rain? It doesn't look like you did anything different than I have.

  • Very pretty. I admit to some concerns about a couple things: how is the ventilation in your coop? Adequate air flow is vital for any birds and I didn’t notice you installing any vents to keep the air moving inside. Once your chicks have feathered out, you don’t have to worry about keeping them warm, you just need to keep them fed and dry. Your power assisted nest box cover is cool, but I would still put a latch on it for those high-wind days that could trigger it opening without a human hand.

    • Depending on where they live they may need to provide heat for the chickens since they are Silkies. Silkies are a more fragile breed of chicken - they need to be protected from the cold and wet weather.

      @lasgsd1@lasgsd1 Жыл бұрын
    • The windows did have chicken wiring underneath the glass and the windows open. He didn’t address that he had done that but you can see it in the video. Maybe there are other vents or holes. Great point!

  • I'm curious about the dimensions of your coop and about how much it cost to build? My wife wants me to build a coop and showed me your video to show what she wanted.

    @hordeplayer566@hordeplayer566 Жыл бұрын
    • I'm dumbfuzzled about the dimensions also, no mention of the square feet or anything.. I'm expecting 300 in materials to build a simple coop with a tin roof. The craftsmanship and all the coatings would push this build over my budget but it sure is eye candy to the viewing audience.

  • Very nice coop. I was looking for ideas for a future build, and this has most of them (I need to integrate straw/feed storage in mine). Our coop stays very clean, because the velociraptors live outside in an apricot tree, and only use the coop for laying - regardless of weather!

  • This looks like a great chicken coop but after watching a LOT of chicken coop builds and watching and learning a LOT about chickens them selves (I also have experience helping a friend of mine with his chickens) I would not call this “ultimate” chicken coop. There’s a lot more you could have done better to benefit the chickens themselves.

  • Love that coupe it's absolutely gorgeous. It was a big surprise when you had my favorite chickens to live in it. The color you chose for the coop and the color of chickens was a perfect match. Stylish elegant and unique just like the chickens that will it there. Although if I ever brought silkies home I think I would figure out a way to let them live in my home. They could be friends with my two parrots and my dog
