  • In softer soils I've always been told to have the wire from the bottom buried pointing outwards at a 45° angle to deter predators from digging under the walls. The angle apparently throws them off and discourages them from continuing to dig down. I build walls for a rabbit run using 14-gauge 1-inch mesh rather than hardware cloth because foxes can be extremely determined.

  • Having the roosts the same height as the nest boxes will lead to hens roosting and soiling the nest boxes.

  • You should paint the netting black so its easier to see into the coop. Others did it and the result is amazing. Maybe include that in the second video. You have great videos keep them flowing.

    • i've used black PVC coated hardware cloth in the past to have a cleaner look. As someone mentioned below, it is recommended to bury the hardware cloth that reaches the group at a 45 going out to discourage digging. Predators will start digging near the walls and will continue going deep unless they are hindered by the hardware cloth.

  • Another option instead of hardware cloth would be fence panels. My area farm supply has panels with 1x1 squares 4 feet wide. Only down side they only come in 16 foot lengths. They are also much heavier gauge than hardware cloth. I know a guy who built his rn with used chain link fence on framing. Reason, it was free.

  • Nice build. I'm glad you realized your error using poultry wire when you need a "Fort Knox" coop. For anyone reading, get the 1/2" hardware cloth. No predator can fit through that and it is a larger wire size than the 1/4" one might be tempted to use. Also, people need to know that the kind of staples you used are fine, Arrow staple gun style are NOT, they are easy to pull out. And a note: You do NOT want to close off all the ventilation in the winter. The birds need airflow to get the ammonia from their poop out of their living space. They will be fine as long as there is no draft on them while they sleep on the roosts.

You should consider using hardware wire, and pain black, makes it invisible so easier to see in and out. Hah just heard that you figured that out. How much did this coats, lumber is still very expensive.
