    • I made it 8’ wide. The floor is full 4x8 sheet plus the 2’ x 8’ sheet under the nest box. Then I split the nest box doors into two (8’ door would be heavy). Should match up with the width of the run and haven’t used much more material.

  • This is just lovely. You are so skilled! I've kept chickens for seven years now, and one small thing I've had to adjust on my coop is the egg door. Mine used to drop down, like yours, but one day it was left open (by a child whose job it is to gather eggs) and a raccoon got in. Super sad. I changed my door to open up instead of drop down, so that it closes with gravity--even if we forget to latch it, it's much more difficult for a predator to get into when they have to push the door up while they scramble inside. It's less convenient for us, of course, but more mistake-forgiving. Edited after I watched the whole thing: I especially love the angled design for the roosts. Sometimes you really do need to be able to get into the coop! How cool.

  • When I first started raising chickens I had no idea what I was doing after the first year I do so deep into it and learned what chickens were about their Anatomy their food their exercise everything I lived on a 100 and 80.acher farm that I was renting the house from the farmer who is 75 years old I gained so much knowledge from this man it wasn't even funny but I ended up free-ranging the chickens which means when I went to work in the morning at 5 a.m. I open the coop door and they ran around all day and eight frogs and Grasshoppers and mice chickens will eat anything we have a small stream that ran through our land and that's where they got their water from but in their Coop I also had chicken feeders that I bought pellets for but because they were free-range they barely ever ate the pellets we had 20 chickens Easter Eggers.. black ostrolops..rhode island reds..plymouth rock..brahma..we even had bhanty roosters and hens.. I miss them all I miss having the eggs and I miss when I came home from work and all them and come running up to my truck from out of the fields no matter where they were at when they saw my truck coming down their driveway they all came running my driveway was a quarter-mile long Gravel Road

My friends knew when they came to visit to be mindful of my chickens 🐓 when they came down the lane cause the chickens would cross the lane & take their own sweet time of it, too.

  • The double man door for cleaning and the system of a droppings board below the roosts is brilliant. I also like the way you clean often. I tried the deep litter method. It can work but it’s definitely not as clean as it should be inside the coop. And when you do clean, it’s a hell of a mess. I’m setting up my second chicken operation now, five birds will be a good start for the backyard flock. Thanks for the tips.

    @petermyers479@petermyers479 Жыл бұрын
    • My deep litter method is large pine shavings in a 6x8 coop. During the winter, the gentle composting action is just enough to prevent frostbite on combs even down to 5 degrees for several days. No ammonia because the shavings pull the moisture out and keep it dry. The chickens keep it mixed, and the poo falls beneath the top layer of shavings to disintegrate as it breaks down the bottom layer of shavings into garden soil. There is no “mat of poo” or layer of filth they are constantly walking on. It’s not a surgical theater either!

      @meanqkie2240@meanqkie2240 Жыл бұрын
    • If you coop is a mess doing the deep litter method you probably are not doing it correctly. Read up in composting and green and brown matter. Don’t fool yourself, don’t believe your chickens aren’t pecking and scratching at poo with sand. Chickens love to peck sand too.

We used pine shavings and added to that every day. Instead of a droppings board, we built a litter box under the roosts that we filled with Sweet PDZ. Then twice every day, we used a kitty litter scooper to clean it out. That worked out pretty well for us and our 18 chickens. They are great fun. Thanks for sharing. It is a fantastic coop!

  • Not sure if anyone made this suggestion but on your door to the nesting boxes. You could put a small piece of chain on the sides and small hooks on the sides of the door, So if you want to use the door as a "bench" (work bench not sitting bench) instead of using your knee you just grab the chain and hook it to the door, one side both sides and now your door will sit "workbench" level and you are free to walk about. If you want to drop the door all the way down, you just unhook the chain(s) and let it hang down. Just make sure you use chains of a material that hold up to the outdoor elements so it doesn't rust on ya.

    @bambamnj@bambamnj Жыл бұрын
    • How I have it on my current coop is the top lifts up on the nests boxes. I would have to do something like that because a chicken could get startled and jump out too easy and I always have my (high prey drive) dogs with me as they are waiting for eggs. :) I really like this coop though, very well done.

  • Perfect design! Just what I've been looking for. When we moved into our house it had a converted shed made into a chicken coop. The one thing that I like about it is that they put vinyl flooring down which makes the floor really easy to clean and stay dry. Especially when the rain blows in when you leave the windows open.

  • I loved the design and functionality of it. I think not only there was a lot of thought put into this coop, but also the execution itself seems doable and straightforward. So I bought the plans, ordered the material, and we are ready to get to work this weekend 😃🤩. Windows are still out at Amazon😏. We are hoping they’ll become available soon. Wish us luck lol and thank you.

  • Looked at several videos and why everyone thinks their coop is the best. I love this design and looks really good too! So much thought went in to building this. Will be basing mine off of yours.

  • Hi there. I love the design. I like the run and the hanging baskets. The baskets take that medicinal look out of the coop. The only thing I would have done is paint the run to match nesting side. You did a fabulous job. With those skills you could build these for people who want to get started and don't have the ability to do it themselves and get a few bucks too. Thanks for showing us this your a good man. Stay safe out there. Take care and God bless.

    • I have a bad back so 10 years ago I bought a chicken house so I can stand up in it. I attached 7 dog kennel panels to enclose the run. I attached a metal roof (built similar to yours) to the section closest to the coop. I used additional kennel panels to close in the rest. I made hanging water buckets out of horse supplement tubs and a gravity feeder I made out of PVC pipe for feed. I use sand like you do and it takes 5 minutes to clean up after 12 chickens every day. I recently added an automatic door and I love it. I think the chickens do too since they can come out early and not wait for me to let them out. Your design is very nice. I will recommend it to others wanting to have chickens.

  • Nice coop and great video. Sweet PDZ for Chickens 10# is $23 or so. Same thing for horses is $13 for 25# at Tractor Supply. Save some money. :)

  • I was raised in the country, but I’ve been a suburbanite my adult life. I’m ready to get back to my roots now. This is an amazing design, but I have to add that I like that it doesn’t look inviting to creepy crawlers. You don’t have to reach your hand anywhere dark and it’s easy to clean! I’m going to buy your plan and if I can’t get my bf and son to build it, I’m going to hire someone. Can’t wait! 😊😊😊

  • 80% of the way into my build. Note, if you use Apple Pay to buy the plans make sure you save them. Didn’t have an account so I had to make an account and then repurchase. With that said this coop build takes some time but overall not too bad. I extended the coop to 8 feet and the run to 17.5 feet. Getting the roof on is going to be a journey 😂
