    • I'm around Matts age - back in the early 60s my Dads young family needed a 2nd car and Dad got Mom a 'new to us' Corvair - metallic blue. And then Ralph Nader came along yelling "Unsafe at ANY speed" due to a wimpy steering tie rod arm that was not addressed quickly by the manufacturer. Consumer Protection began here. Seat belts were next. Well, you can imagine how Dads "UNSAFE" car went over with Mom... It wasn't reliable and rusted in the Canadian climate. The running joke about Dad trying to get Mom killed went on for YEARS. One trip with me in a bassinet on the back seat (!!??!) she had to hit the brakes and my bassinet flipped over, upside down into to the space behind the seats! That would be bad enough but Mom knew that directly under the car mat behind the front seat was a rust hole big enough to drop a football through! The snow carpet saved my life to allow me to share this story. To this day I chase Corvairs and marvel at their strange design. Would never drive one. 🙂

  • Straps are good for pulling and holding stuff down. But you never want to use them where you have to jerk on something to get it to start moving. That is what jerk ropes are made for because they will stretch and spread the impact over a longer period of time. And that makes all the difference in the world.

Put a picture of the world's largest (allegedly) off road wrecker on a jersey (no logo, everyone will recognize it anyway), and send it in. Make the campaign large and loud. Even if they choose another name, the hype would be fantastic for your channel, and your new team.

Proper kinetic rope, absolutely better, even that will rip that little spot welded tow hitch off. Use a strap the way Caulin(sp?) used the rope for the van. Slow and easy with no twitching. :)

  • i rented one of those rav 4 hybrids last week with only 3 miles on it, it was my first hybrid too, kinda messed with my head at first, i drove it from 15 ft above sea level to 4500 above sea level put just over 1000 miles on it and cost me 87.28 in fuel for the whole trip, if not for all the mountains i bet it woulda cost 50 or less. ill say one thing though, those front seats are not comfy after the first hour or so.

  • I have done even crazier more sketchy things and was able to somehow not get stuck the lead to the most sketchiest driving that didn’t end well. It was Much like the Sand Shute but in Louisiana but you rounded a turn, to find a parking lot of car and trucks that had rusted to nothing bumper ripped off and hanging on by one bolt. I had just gotten a pull pal anchor spade. That sinking feeling I had just put everyone into a sand trap. Lucky the sand is bad but not powdery windblown like Utah. Thanks for sharing.

  • Kaulin, maybe next time, run your recovery rope under your rear axle in order to decrease your rope angle. It can help save the plastics on the van.

  • I agree with SelfEvident. Things like this happen all the time to people where I live. There is a reason for road closed signs. Thinking it doesn’t apply to you is what gets novices in trouble.

  • If you haven’t gotten stuck in a ditch in the snow, you’ve only managed to not do it YET. It’s an inevitability for all us winter warriors.

    • Well if "winter warriors" means ignoring road closed signs, goiing where i should not be going and not using winter tyres, then i am certainly not a winter warrior. (And i haven't been stuck in my 26 years of driving in european alpine winters.)

    • I've gotten stuck in my driveway, but never in a ditch. When the road starts getting worse, I slow down and if the road is closed, I don't go on it.

    • The minivan shows us that we need more masculinity in life. If a real man were in that woman’s life, she would have known not to try that. This is living proof that there are people who actually are oblivious to things that could harm them. Ask yourself “Let’s drive a minivan in the middle of nowhere far out away from civilization IN THE SAND!” Come on people. If you can’t grasp the negatives on this decision, Matt’s off road recovery is just a phone call away! That is if you have cell service. Battery life. Food. Necessities for a blistering hot day or a sub zero night. News flash! A hybrid minivan AINT gonna work in these conditions my friends! Spread the word! People die doing crap like this! I don’t laugh when I see this, I actually ask myself what brought them to this decision and the same reason comes to mind. THEY DONT UNDERSTAND HOW MOTHER NATURE WORKS! Pisses me off really. Money, time, others out in danger to save them from a situation that ANY human being could see was a dangerous place to be! Basically, they are selfish and privileged to the point that they actually believe that way the crap out of nowhere SOMEONE WILL come to their rescue! Guess what?! In reality, that someone might not be able to. Then you die. STOP TAKING VEHICLES INTO PLACES THEY ARENT DESIGNED TO BE INTENDED TO GO! If you’re in the desert, you better be in a desert vehicle. In snow, snow vehicle. Mud, mud vehicle. Moab….Ya know. Come on America! Get your brain back! Please for the love of God stop being selfish and putting other people’s lives at stake and understand that a hybrid minivan does NOT belong ANYWHERE NEAR gravel or ANYWHERE NEAR SAND! My God this pisses me off to no end! Some people are so far out there they don’t understand mechanical engineering at the sub level! The next two generations are screwed. Flat out dependent on the Government. I’m out! I’m Gen X so that’s why I’m pissed. Google the upbringing of Gen X and you’ll understand why I’m pissed! On a side note…..I wouldn’t have taken the call knowing it was a minivan. I would have farmed it out. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
