  • if you want to clear space, remove the European qualifying clubs from the League Cup. Problem solved. Then the big boys can enjoy their start to the season without fixture congestion. It means a new winner of the competition every year (feels like it's only been won by Man City or Liverpool lately) and it means that the League One/Two sides will still get to go to some big grounds! Stamford Bridge, Spurs' Stadium, Stadium of Light, Hillsborough etc would've been stadiums to go to this season. It will also make the FA Cup more sacrosanct.

    • If these "big clubs" have players' welfare in mind, then a) stop going off to play friendlies three days after the season ends on the opposite side of the world, b) use their bloated squads properly and stop loaning out a dozen players a season for financial gain. It also misses the main point, which is lower league clubs playing EFL teams can be huge for them as well as well for a League 1/2 side. Exposure, local businesses, they all get that uplift. The intrigue, the spectacle, the throwback to a bygone era, the plucky underdog stories. The dreams of a non League player making a name for themselves, etching their name in the history books for a brief moment. However, i dont expect the myopathy of the franchisee fan and their clubs, wallowing in the muck of avarice to grasp any of that.

  • The EFL could boycott the fa cup but that would be self destructive. If this decision to scrap relays is overturned the premier league teams could boycott the fa cup and who would be interested then. This is about reducing games for the top teams. I would go further, League cup sf make over one leg. Reduce champs league groups to 3 teams so you only play 4 matches instead of 6. Scrap international friendly During the season. Scrap world club championship and that ridiculous club world cup next summer. Top players are playing to much, getting injuried to much and diluting the quality of play because of tiredness.

  • The minute the EFL says they'll boycott, the Premier League will be happy to see the whole competition go away. MLS tried keeping all of their teams out of the US Open Cup this summer and then USSF provided a half measure where the top teams playing in Concacaf Champions Cup could sit out the tournament and only 8 MLS teams had to put in their senior teams. I also think if clubs are counting on FA Cup money to keep them afloat need to do more to fix their finances than counting on potentially hosting a Premier League team. How many lower league teams are also still trying to squeeze games in because of weather, cups, and other issues. It's not just the Prem that are having this problem. Fortunately only City and Chelsea have to worry about the Club World Cup.

    @michaelwalker7400@michaelwalker740013 күн бұрын
    • That would all be fine m, until you actually see that the Premier League outside of "The Big Six" are creaking financially as well. MLS however is a great example because of the franchisee nature of the ownership there is being replicated here and that has fed down to the people who like to see the club doing well. Supporters, however, are getting shafted by it. There is a distinction.

      @Soccerates@Soccerates13 күн бұрын

  • Lower league clubs have more of a chance of knocking out bigger clubs if replays are removed surely. The percentage of replays that are won by the lesser team are low whereas in the first leg if the lesser team has already gone 90 minutes drawing then they have extra time or pens . Usually the bigger team just goes strong in the return leg and blitzes them

    @Damon-xr6zf@Damon-xr6zf12 күн бұрын
  • Reducing the pressure on fixtures would suggest that other tournaments are not expanded, but that is so obviously not the case. The smaller clubs, the ones that benefit most from forcing a replay are not involved in top European or National team issues and this so obviously robs them of the potential for cup dividends. If I hadn’t started watching my team over 50 years ago, I’d look to a local third tier team and give them my money and support - they’ll certainly need it.

  • No this is wrong! Joe public has to go to work every day of the week year in year out for pittance money compared to what these premier clubs players get! They are paid to play football and entertain! Its bad enough that these domestic trophies have lost popularity compared to Europe competition. Clubs many years ago played far more games than they do now! If they eat what we mortals eat they wouldnt be so tired and fed up and would be stronger! 😤😤

  • The quickest way to fix the schedule is to not have promotion for a season and have demotion only from the Prem league down for 4 teams. That leaves 16 teams in the PL moving forward and only 30 games played in the PL so 8 less games on the schedule. Those extra 4 teams moving down will end up with 4 more teams in the National league. They play so many games you could just play each other once.

But the Prem to not consult EFL on replays is out of order but unfortunately, they don’t need to. Boycotting the cup loses money for the small clubs too. What can you do? They need a compromise. All small clubs will take no replays for more money share. The Prem doesn’t need to hog all the money.

The fans probably might but ultimately if the PL gave the small clubs more cash, this wouldn't be anywhere near as big an issue. Regarding "fewer games" - scrap the mid season games anyway. I have always hated them, replays or no replays. There is so much pointless football that is played, the Nations League is another.

  • Horrific. Any small team drawing with a multi billion premier league deserves either a replay at both home for the huge gate receipts, or away and the whole town can go to an amazing away game. The premier leagues teams used to give the gate receipts to the visiting team. That money went a long way for a small team. I can only hope the small team giant slayers beat the bigger clubs in penalties. Premier league teams always moaning about the amout of games played yearly, they have the money for a A,B, and C teams. They dont have to field an A team. They could field a C team. To a premier league team, it may be nothing, but the small teams, and away game at liverpool, man u , aresnal etc is an event that will be with the fans for a lifetime.

  • What if the Premier League were made to pay all the clubs from the lower divisions say 100k a pop instead of having replays in all competitions. Then it'd be a win win for everyone. Fixtures wouldn't be conjested, there'd be zero backlash as it'd be fairer, lower league clubs would get a financial benefit every year to help with costs and strengthen the pyramid as a whole. Win/Win.

  • Listen to Simon Jordan. I’d rather have the money guaranteed every year than a 1 in 10000 chance of a maybe fixture with an even smaller chance of replay for one club every year

  • Completely agree with Darren Bent here, play it at the bigger stadium with a 50/50 split. why is it EFL teams in league 1&2 play a minimum of 51 games a season, They have less money, Less wages and never moan. Premier League is ruining the game in this country. EFL is way better for fans.

  • The more times passed the more the super league seems to make sense really. If you look how sports are run in America compared to the uk they are second to none. We need to catch up and fast. Why people feel the need to try and keep the game the way it was a hundred years ago when it has sadly moved way beyond that. Where seeing clubs disappear like Bury. Form a super league with promotion to and from the too leagues it springs an extra four slots ins one countrys for clubs to move up a tier and its all of an interest still and the moneys there

  • Let's address all the points in turn - 1. The UEFA/FIFA argument. Clubs across the entire pyramid have international players. England, ran by the FA, do not have to play friendly matches if they don't want to. 2. "Top players are playing too many matches. We have to protect their welfare." Compared to their Football League counterparts, no, they are not. Furthermore, players further down the pyramid, who work another job, often have to cram lots of matches in a short space of time. Does player welfare not cpunnt three days after the Premier League finish, when some clubs are flying 17-19hrs to another continent to play a friendly? 3. "We are protecting grassroots football." Scrapping friendlies does not protect grassroots. It hinders them. Also, the local businesses and the uplift in profile that the towns, etc, get has not been considered. Absolute nonsense again and I do feel that the 712 clubs that werent consulted need to stand together and boycott the FA Cup.
