Datsun 240Z Restoration - The Bodywork Odyssey (Part 2)
In this video I start doing all the bodywork on the car to get it ready for blasting. This is the first half of it. The second half is coming next week in episode 3.
First I vacuumed the whole car and removed the sound deadening.
Next I needed to remove the undercoating on the rotisserie. I used an infrared lamp and a scraper to remove it. I also did the same on the fenders. Now the car is ready to get all dents removed by my friend from parkbeulen.ch. All panels were quickly reassembled to the chassis and the car back on jack stands. He was able to remove all dents from the complete car in just one day.
Now it's time to start doing all the bodywork. I started with closing the holes from the side markers. They're not mandatory in Switzerland and I prefer the clean look. Then I drilled four new holes in both fenders to install some fender mirrors. I really like that japanese style of them, you can't see much, but it's just about the look. That means I don't need the door mirror anymore, so I closed both holes.
Working on the door I saw two holes from the inside. I quickly discovered body filler and a big dent around these two holes. I sanded it all off, welded the holes, ground it flush and hammered it until the dent was completely removed. I also found the same on the passenger door. I think they drilled these holes so the filler holds better.
I also fitted a new BRE style front spoiler to it.
In the rear I found two areas where a tiny bit of rust was shining through. I decided to drill all spot welds off and remove the panel. What a good decision that was, a bunch of rust came to light underneath. I removed everything, applied some weld through primer and welded the panel back on the car. One of the clips that hold the rear panel was broken off. I bough new ones, but couldn't replace it. I needed to drill the little bracket off, make four new ones and weld them back on the car. I had to be careful when welding, so the clip doesn't get too hot and ruin the heat treatment of the spring steel. After the rear panel section was done, I moved on with the tailgate. As I'm replacing the old flimsy and broken rear spoiler I needed to close all the holes from it in the tailgate. So I started sanding the paint off for welding. I then quickly discovered more body filler and a bunch of more holes from the old emblems. I welded them all, ground flush and drilled new holes for the new spoiler. To remove the wobbly effect on the tailgate I removed the original support piece and welded in a much stronger version.
As I won't install the roll bar anymore, I closed all 16 holes from it.
Now it's time to move to the rusted rocker panel. I just started to remove it and found a lot more rust hidden behind it. As this video is already a bit long, I decided to continue and finish the bodywork in another episode, coming next week.
The complete bodywork on this car took me around 110 days in the workshop. It was much more work that I ever could expect after I disassembled the car. I recorded a total of 1500 clips. On Patreon there's a 2h 40 minutes video available which is an extended more detailed version which includes part 2 and 3.
I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.

Thank you so much to all my supporters on Patreon! Without your support it wouldn't be possible to make such a huge and long project. If you're also interested in supporting this project you can join my Patreon at patreon.com/mymechanics I'm sharing daily updates/vlogs from the workshop. There's also a very detailed version of this video (2h 40min), which also includes episode 3, along with 110 vlogs that document the whole bodywork odyssey. Enjoy the video...
Eu estava muito ansioso esperando esse vídeo 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾, vc é muito fera
MM, the journey you've been on from the beginning with this car has been fascinating and I'm so glad you're sharing it with us. From your buying it to now has been a fun ride. I am so looking forward to the next steps.
Do you and BigStackD coordinate your video releases sometimes? Good stuff.
Keep up the good work I love watching your videos
What is stopping you from sand blasting the car entitely?
I’ve waited 5 months, these 27 minutes just flew by and now I can’t wait for the next one. You are one of a kind! Absolutely mesmerizing
Thanks a ton!
That's exactly the way I feel as well.
Try the second channel videos. They are more frequent
I haven't read your comment before writing mine and I used exactly the same word : "mesmerize". 😀
This will be another Project Binky
Everyone rightfully always comments on your technical skills, but I'd like to add how much I appreciate how your videos are filmed and edited. It's so relaxing to watch, everything is incredibly clear and up close and you cut out exactly the right amount of repetitiveness.
The most important thing is....no babbling about nonsense.
It's strange how relaxing they are, because (especially in this one) there's always loud noises with hammering, sanding, etc. And yet, they are super soothing to watch.
@@kstarlerYeah, because the sounds match the action, unlike when my neighbour does something similar but much less competently 5 feet from the side of my house, when it's just a temptation to murder - lol
I've become obsessed with how he shoots and edits videos. Because it's just better. It just is. There's a formula to it too. He never fast forwards, and if he does it's very brief and for a specific reason. He shows you exactly what you want to see **for exactly the right amount of time**.
I couldn't agree more. I fell asleep watching it. It is beautifully methodical.
My dude, you had me till the fender mirrors. As a sheetmetal worker, welder, and car guy ... this is masterful work!
Thank you very much
100%, not that I'm not a fan of fender mirrors, but as a "restoration" he should have... ya know... restored it... adding something that wasn't there in the first place feels odd and am not a fan of it.
I'm not the biggest fan of fender mirrors but still your work is amazing
All he did was convert it from an American version to the original Japanese/European version. Japan didn't require side markers, and the mirrors were fender-mounted.
Also to @mymechanics, if you are doing that, I assume you're going to discard the Datsun emblems and possibly replace them with "Fairlady" emblems?
I've watched so many car repair and restoration videos on KZhead, I've lost count; however your fabrication skills and attention to detail are at another level. Subscribed! Very nice work.
Glad to hear that, thank you
I take it you ride?
I would have had it stripped and dipped before ANY body work. You have to know what you are working with BEFORE you start any restoration work
My only complaint with this series is that it goes by so quickly. I know it takes an insane amount of work and attention to detail to make these videos, but time just flies by so fast watching these. I could seriously watch hours of this and be glued to my seat. This channel is an absolute treasure to KZhead.
I never want them to end...
If you want more, Patreon members get near-daily vlogs, and the full Patreon cut of the chassis video is almost 3 hours long. 😀
Also his second channel covers some food behind the scenes stuff
Who was it said something along the lines of "I love hard work. I could watch it for hours"?
I sincerely appreciate that you do not settle for anything less than perfection. No body filler, welds to replace screw, no weird noises if a panel flexs. This is why your channel is number 1 amongst the restoration community. Also, those Beverly Shears.
I remember that video with the shears and he uses the Gressel Vice also.
Your comment could not put it into any better words.
I think filler is completely unavoidable if he wants a perfect paint job. A lot of those small dents can't be made invisible without filler. But he is minimizing the amount he will need before painting. I'm sure the result will be perfect. Curious which color he will choose. The original one is not very appealing.
What? You don't like poop colored cars?@@JS_Precision
@@JS_Precision He did a poll and the community voted its classic yellow color, tho he could always change his mind in the end
About 20 years ago I was given a 240Z, California car with almost zero rust, but otherwise rough. Had it shipped to VA with intention to restore it. After 2 years of it sitting under a cover, my wife says "fix it, or sell it". I sold it. Watching this video, I made the right decision, I no longer regret not trying to restore it. The skill and the speciality tools needed to do the job correctly are on another level from what I might have mustered. Thank you for helping me see I was not equipped to try restoring it myself.
Holy crap seeing those lights reflection just re-aligned it self after the dents was fix is the most satisfying and beautiful thing to look at.
What a great episode. You distilled the months of hard work into the essence of all you've accomplished. The filming was perfect as well as the storytelling. You let me feel like I was right next to you and that's awesome. Loved the cliffhanger as well.😉Even though it's a car, and this is a long drawn-out process, it still feels like a regular restoration. Thanks, MM. This is a fun ride.
Thank you very much. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it.
@@mymechanics I absolutely love Datsun 240Z, seing your precision work on it is extremely relaxing.
I have NEVER in my entire life been so obsessed with anything more than I’ve been obsessed with this restoration 😂
check out project binky @badobsessionmotorsports its insane !
It's literally going to be the most impeccable restoration ever done on a Z!
As always, your attention to detail is second to none. Most people would just tackle the rust but you go 15 steps beyond that! I cannot wait for the next episode!
Thank you very much :-)
I think of all the restoration channels out there, this one has the best and most versatile range of technical skills, tools and solutions to problems. This episode in particular was wonderful for learning how to approach awkward angles and sheet metal repair.
From tools and small appliances to a whole damn car. You never disappoint.
Well, I'm a little disappointed he did look at that rusted chassis and said, "I make a new one". 😉
Right???

The legend is back. I can not imagine how much work you have been putting into this project, especially with the filming and editing. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey.
Much appreciated!
"Relieving stress by hammering" is too relatable. Sometimes, you just need to hit something hard.
Thank you for always being considerate of your viewers when you show us welding! Some channels don’t do any editing at all for welding and I’m suddenly blinded by the surprise brightness.
I don’t think I’ve EVER seen this level of meticulous care taken on a restoration of a car. This Datsun is going to be SO MUCH BETTER than it was when it was new, it’s insane. You are truly going to have a one of a kind automobile sir!
At the same time it will be the very first Car With No Sharp Edges™
I don't think even Rolls Royce pays this much attention to their body work.
your friend is a friggin professional craftsman to remove all those dents impeccably!! The amount of skill, creativity, and experience is incredible! I love how you’re showcasing his skills here!
Word!
They made a totally custom jig to pull that hood at the nose. That was impressive.
Absolutely smitten with the fender mirrors, and also want to shout out the unreal level of care taken with camera and lighting angles to make the dent removal clear and visible
What can I add that hasn't already been said, sublime workmanship that most of us can only dream about...next level. 👍😊
I can’t even begin to describe my admiration for your talents, not only your imagination and skill at tackling the challenges, but your creativity and talent in recording and editing these videos for us to enjoy. As a previous “Z” owner, I can barely contain my enthusiasm for the next chapter. Well done, Master! 👍👍👍 ~ John in Ohio
Thanks a lot for being here :-)
Absolutely amazing! I could have watched this for an hour, two hours even. I didn’t even notice 27 minutes go by. The craftsmanship, engineering, imagination and improvisation are unparalleled. But the video editing is absolutely outstanding as well. No needless repetition. No drawn out segments on one little task. I’ve seen other channels which have tried to imitate this one - with some success - but nothing compares to the story-telling-in-video on this channel.
Glad to hear that, thank you very much
Thank you for the fantastic and detailed work. I'm not a "car guy", but I can appreciate the attention you have to every conceivable detail on this car restoration. It is also appreciated in how you are making this your own, not just restoring it to how it originally was, but by making small modifications to meet your exacting standards and personal tastes. Thank you again for making great content!
From tools and small appliances to a whole damn car.You never disappoint.. No talk, no music just work, brilliant.
The childish joy I feel when I see “I make a new one”. I’ve said this before, this channel is therapy. Thank you and happy holidays to everyone celebrating. ❤
Thanks a lot for watching :-)
OMG, me too, I legit have a little cheer when I saw that.
Is it really My Mechanics with making a new one?
I bought one in 1970 and regreat the day I sold it .
i haven't seen anyone up till now working in that detail denters don't go so much they just put putty and sand it but this man is out of this world.
I absolutely can’t imagine how much work it was to condense all that work from months into a 27 minute video. You did great work, I really enjoyed the video
Just half of it, the other half coming next week. Thanks
Incredible. This is art, done by a master craftsman, using the finest tools. The quality of workmanship is inspiring. And the tools this guy has.. you can practically feel the quality of them. The chuck on the drill weighs more than most cordless pieces of junk at Home Depot.
Your patience and attention to detail are glorious and inspiring. I cannot wait to see the most perfect 240Z that has ever existed!
From the very beginning, knowing your extraordinary attention to detail, I understood that this project would be epic! And I was not mistaken. This is absolute art. Thank you!
Many many thanks :-)
Having restored and modified a few cars, knowing the amount of work it takes ! I always thought that you more or less have to leave some stuff behind, as it would otherwise be impossible to ever get done. Apparently I was wrong 😍 That being said, my BMW 635 were run here in Sweden and had 3-9 layers of paint, and square meters of corrosion 😅
That sound dampening removal was top tier. The unique ways to deal with problems efficiently is why i love this channel.
I’ve bit overwhelmed of late. And so I’ve been surprised by how soothing this video has been. Thankyou.
I want to say that this part of the video was one of the most anticipated things by me this year. I almost never leave comments under youtube videos, but today I want to write a huge thank you. It's so nice to look at the work of a real professional. I can't even imagine how much effort it cost you to do all this and record a video. Excellent work with light, sound, and framing. I have been following your work for a long time and am amazed at how scrupulous you are about every detail in the product. I'm looking forward to the new part of the video, it will be a New Year's gift for me
And finally, at 19:17, what we were all waiting for. "I make a new one." Your work is an inspiration, sir.
What's different about this project is not just the size, but the number of surprises you're running into - and, to no surprise, you're masterfully addressing all of them. Can't wait for the 'et Voila!' on this one!
You would enjoy Laura Kampfs house Restauration Series, I think.
Оснащенность мастерской и руки профессионала впечатляют! От начала и до конца, и даже палец не дрогнул в сторону перемотки) Подписка и 👍🏻
the paint removal method is the most ingenious I've ever seen, it's also very eco-friendly. Well done.
Finally! The Roman empire and this upcoming release have been sharing space in my mind.
😂
As someone who has been around cars for 3/4’s of my life I have developed an understanding of them. What you have shown is actually serious skill and you should be proud of your workmanship
You're the only person I have ever known to have the same level of attention to detail as me. It is truly a marvel to watch. Thank you so much for existing and making me feel slightly less alone in this world. And ofcourse, keep up the astounding work 🔥
I've never seen someone put that much work and love into something. I am so impressed!
The camera angles while removing the dents was mesmerizing. Watching those dents disappear with the lighting reflections was magical. I'm also impressed at how much your work has a mental release for me that just about anything can be rebuilt, and that every small effort is worth the work. Great Video!
Watching a perfectionist do what they’re good at is just the most satisfying thing. This is beyond restoration, this is pure art. 🥰 thank you for all of your hard work.
Thank you very much as always
The attentin to detail and the skills involved are beyond phenomenal!
This is award-winning stuff right here. The genre has to thank you for all your efforts in moving it forward. You are a true craftsman in every sense of the word.
Those were the fastest 27 minutes of my life! Thank God you mentioned in the end that the next video will be up next week 😂 Love your genuine effort to restore lost treasures and turn them into works of art ❤ Keep up your good work!
Loving this even more than all of your other fantastic work! I'm a PDR specialist working mostly on hail damage here in Austin, Texas and it's so enjoyable to watch your body work techniques.
You restoring this car has given me a new drive into restoring my car. I have nowhere near the amount of skill and patience you have. But i will do my absolute best and definitely use your tips and tricks. I have a 1969 Mercury Marquis
Knowing how this guy works, this car will be the best looking 240Z that has ever existed
Man, even removing the dents looks like an artform in of itself... As always, well put together, and can't wait for the next update! Also can't believe it's already been half a year since the first time you revealed this project. x_x
Thank you very much
Honestly, I don’t think any Datsun has received as much love and care as this one.
My man here has changed the meaning of a quality restoration. I'd trust anything to be repaired by him with both eyes closed, fr. Awesome job, dude. Always top tier content
If anyone deserves your Patreonage it's this guy. Highest quality restoration content on KZhead for years now and extreme attention to detail which satisfies even OCD perfectionists. Outstanding!
Nice to hear that, thank you very much :-)
Personally I don't like fender mirrors and would have kept the door mirrors but its not my car so my opinion doesn't count. You're a magician with metal and do the most thorough restorations I've ever seen so no doubt whatever you choose to do this 240Z is going to look amazing!
Thanks, I really fell in love with the design.
Your work is astonishing, and your attention to detail is on another level. It's beautiful to watch.
“I make a new one” is the best quote of any youtube channel ever. I always get excited when you have to make something new and then i get to way too audibly say “I MAKE A NEW ONE”
Glad to see you back ! This level of repair is almost unbelievable. Modern day shops would never dream of doing any of these things. The skill and patience that you showed us here is not only rare, it is damned near therapeutic. Thanks for sharing, can't wait for the next episode !
Can I suggest you check out Harrys Garage and watch the restoration of his Lancia Fulvia Zagato ? Very high degree of skills on display there too
Thanks !@@Fernweh1965
Outstanding!! I am so excited about watching this come together. Glad you got rid of the Bono and got back to metal! This is going to be a solid great looking car. Glad you are taking us along for the restore, Thank you!
The meticulous attention to detail is as pleasing as ever. Every time I watch one of these videos, I get inspired to fix things, and do it well.
Many many thanks :-)
These 4 little brackets…are telling us a lot about you and your passion. One of a kind, inspirating, motivating. My deepest respect.
This is the greatest project ever. I used to work in a body shop and we were never as thorough as this. This is what I would consider the ultimate form of restoration. Can't wait for more. Fantastic job!
Absolutely unique. The way that you film, Step by step. All clean and the light, just like a studio. Have some more!!👌 Thank you.
You sir, are an inspiration! The work you do is amazing, this has got to be my favourite KZhead channel ❤ excited to see episode 3!
Think about this, guy is not only restoring it, he is also fixing the factory imperfections. He is making an improved version of this car the world had never seen. btw. thinking I have to wait at least a month after this release for a new episode, you cannot imagine how glad I am when you tell me at the end of the video that new episode is releasing next week.
Nice to hear that, thank you very much :-)
I'm not watching any of the Datsun vids until he says it's totally done. Then I'll dedicate an entire day to bingeing all of them at once, like the glutton I am.
That's gonna be a loooong wait dude. 🤣
I had a 73 240 Z many years ago. Very similar color as well. Great cars! Glad you are restoring it.
ASTONISHING WORK! It's incredibile how much detail you can provide to even the smallest of bolt and pieces, truly one of the greatest.
This is museum-quality work. I couldn't be more impressed.
Неожиданный конец) Очень качественно всё делаете. Как говорил один человек на шоу по восстановлению автомобилей: "Я старый и помню эти машины новыми, но поверьте они не были так хорошо сделаны как вы сделали сейчас". 👍👍👍
Incredible job and craftsmanship. Moreover it is incredible that the car chosen to restore is this beautiful Datusun - one of the masterpieces of japanese car manufacturing.
one of my favorite cars of all time, i am very happy it is being restored in such a good manner, Ive watched most of your videos and theyre great. your craftmanship is awesome.
This channel is definitely different from other channels. While he can always do similar things, he always goes above and beyond. Each time, he shows us methods that we have never seen before and would never even cross our minds. He obsessively fixes everything until what he does is perfect. As someone who has been watching these kinds of channels for a long time, i can't watch anyone else anymore. Only My mechanics
Unfortunately- though only by a bit- he was my first in the genre. Now I can’t watch anything else but I’m out of his episodes!! 😢
You are doing a wonderful job w/this restoration. In the 1970's this was the car to own!
Absolutely loving this content, really appreciate your fabrication, editing and video style, no chatter, just action. Looking forward to watching the whole restoration, 10/10.
The trick with dry ice was fantastic 👍

As expected, the amount of detail is fantastic. You sir, are a restoration God.😎
I can’t imagine the sense of pride you must have knowing you are making something even better than how it was originally made. I loved this video.
Thank you very much :-)
More than 50 years ago when I was about to be married, we met a photographer called Stuart F McDonald. He was driving a new shiny 240Z in Orange. I was very impressed. (I was driving an old Land Rover). He did a wonderful job of the photos and we are still happily together with two half Swiss /half Australian grand children. Great job you are doing on the 24 OZ ( as they were called here). Mike in Oz
Wow you’re so lucky to have friends that have the same level of attention to detail as yourself and not only that but highly skilled enough to perfectly correct everything this is an amazing series I’m so keen for more
Never been a fan of the fender mirrors but everything else is on point. You do some amazing work my friend. 👍🏻
Agreed. I would have kept the originals, but it's his car anyways.
Yep, his car, his choice. Not keen on them myself though. Waiting to see if I change my view on the finished car.
Completely agree👍🏻

I have been an eager and sometimes an impatient follower, returning to your old videos while waiting for the next one. I got your channel recommended when you published your first video. To think it's been five years. And i hope it'll be many more! I got to say though; i am thoroughly impressed, you reach new peaks on the impressiveness scale with each video, and this one is certainly no exception. The cleverness, practicality; what regular pedestrian think of using dry ice to freeze and harden glue?! I sat in awe, spewing out laughs only induced by the surprise of your ingenuity. What an episode! And the next one is due only in a week!! The thing that impresses me as well is the cleanliness you impose in your workshop. Not have i ever experienced such beautiful and considerate workmanship. What an standard you impose on your work. What great five years it has been following you. Thank you very much !
The Picasso of perfectionism. Could not wait any longer for the second installment. Even your timing is perfect.
