I see many videos talking about the differences between the Sunni and Shia, but most of them present a simplified version. In this video, I try to give you a more comprehensive overview.

    • Again ... Love your public education outreach work here. I've learned so much already on topics that are way outside my research area. (Especially laying sick in bed for a week.) A possible future topic? What's the religious studies take on the social control theory of "religious cults / new religious movements"? The most often cited text seems to be Combatting Cult Mind Control. It's very much in the field of social psychology. What I find interesting? The BITE model proposed in it could be used to, effectively place all new religious movements, but also all religious sects on a sliding scale between "high control "cult"" and low control sect. So, say, the branch Branch Davidians would be at the top and, say, Australian Aboriginal "dreamtime" rituals or other folk religions would be at the bottom. Your interest in Islam might make you a good person to address this, given the fairly strict practices of religious law in Sunni, Salafi and Ibadi Islam.

All these years, I never knew this much that you presented in this video. Maybe I wasn't informed, or simply, I didn't ask. What an excellent presentation that deserves all the credit. We live we die and everything in between is a waste if we can't get along. Christians don't like muslims, muslims don't like Christians, how does either have peace after death if hate is all both know? I have given up believing in God , I hope the world realizes how ignorant both sides have been. We'll never go anywhere with hate.

It means to bring peace and reconciliation between Jew, Christian, Muslim, cousins by Abraham. One of the things God told me I am is Evergreen. My middle name is Sue. When the Evergreen freighter Evergiven blocked the Suez Canal right before Passover, Easter and Ramadan I laughed with God and the entire angel team in Heaven above. For I knew. • Same. I'm either agnostic or atheist(I dont think it matters), but religion has shaped so much of our culture and how events play out that one basically has to understand the history of religion to understand why many groups act the way they do. Understanding many geopolitical and humanitarian actions is greatly enhanced by knowing the religious context.

  • Nice video. Just a note. Shia believe in Imam Ali (A.S.) being the successor because of the event at Ghadeer Khumm where the Prophet (S.) said that "Whoever I am his master (Mawla) then Ali is his master (Mawla)" along with other events. Also, Twelver Shias (the main group of Shias) still have a living Imam, Imam Mehdi (AJ.), who is in occultation and will return. This is similar to how Muslims believe Prophet Jesus (A.S.) will return. This is just a general note and more details can be found at the appropriate sources.

    • After the death of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), there were two options to seek guidance from. a) The ahlulbayt (the holy household) of the Holy Prophet. b) Others. The ahlulbayt are those family members of the Holy Prophet who grew up in his blessed lap. They are the people in whose house Islam, Qur'an and the sharia'h was revealed. They are the ones upon whom Muslims are obligated to send blessings in their namaz/Salat/Daily Prayers. Ahlulbayt are those family members of the Holy Prophet about whom Allah testifies to their purity, infallibility and sinlessness in the holy Qur'an. They are the ones who the Holy Prophet left behind him with the holy Qur'an. The Ahlulbayt loved the Holy Prophet the most and he loved them the most. Amongst the ahlulbayt you have people like hazrat Ali who is the gateway to to the city of the knowledge of the Holy Prophet, hazrat Fatimah Zahra who is the chief of the women of the paradise. Imam Hasan and Husain, the two leaders of the youths of paradise. They are the heirs of the knowledge and wisdom of the Holy Prophet. Who can understand Islam, Qur'an, sharia'h, the sunnah of the Holy Prophet and so on better than the people of the house? Therefore, after the Holy Prophet Muhammad, the Shi'as seek guidance from the Holy Household of the Holy Prophet. • @@mountainleopard5370 Allah has made this life in a way where we seek a means to attain our goals. For example going to the doctor before the specialist (which is called a metaphor/example in case your uneducated mind didn't understand). This is something very natural and accepted. Even those who believe in God seek help through others, it doesn’t mean that we don’t believe in God if we go to a doctor. When we say Ya Ali or Ya Hussayn we are seeking help from the Ahlulbayt knowing and believing that whatever help they give us is through and by the permission of God. There are several verses in the Quran which encourage people to seek a means to reach their goal or even get closer to God. Nisaa 64 This verse tells believers who are seeking repentance to repent through RasulAllah, basically encouraging people to call upon RasulAllah. Ma’ida 25 Encourages people to seek a means to reach God. When we call upon the Ahlulbayt a.s. we are seeking a legitimate means that God has appointed for us. Saying Ya Ali is not only halal, it is also encouraged because the Ahlulbayt are the means that God uses to connect with us, we use them to connect with God. Also Ya Mohammed s.a.w.s. is in your books but you've just never read them. Plus saying that these people are "dead" and cannot hear us is a pure contradiction with what the Quran says. O you who believe! seek assistance through patience and prayer; surely Allah is with the patient ones (153). And do not speak of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead; nay, (they are) alive, but you do not perceive (154). And We will most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient ones (155), who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: “Surely we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return” (156). Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course (157).

    • @@gondala lol what? Only because it is that simple. Every Muslim has the basic faith that Muhammad is the last prophet of God and there is no god but *the* God. The majority of Muslims are sunni (this is why I assume and said "you're a sunni" ) and they probably wouldn't know or even call themselves sunnis if not for shia's distinct principles. By all means I'm not against Shias existing nor am I saying that they aren't Muslims but the small theological differences unfortunately happened to be the most substantial in deciding how the religion works and progress. This is why I bring up about the Imams because they are the deal breaker. According to Shias, the hadith of the Imams are *weighted almost the same as prophet Muhammad SAW himself* . This is a problem as being infallible/maksum is a quality that's usually reserved only for the great Prophets and especially problematic that in their belief it can be passed through bloodline inheritance. I know what you're trying to say with the kumbaya stuff but we have to bridge the gap between sect through mutual understanding of each others differences and throwing your hands up then say "we're all muslims" is quite lazy, doesn't add anything to the conversation and in your own words "simple logic, black and white". I'm sorry if I offend you, no intention to just needed to share. And let me rephrase my statement - If you're a Muslim who believe that the Imams are not maksum, then you're not a Shia, and *probably* a Sunni based on majority.

    • The easiest thing for you is a Sunni sect like Judaism. They adhere to the legacy of the ancestors rather than monotheism in one God. This is what we call following the approach and way of life of the ancestors and their laws in organizing life. This is what is called Islamic Sharia (Salafis) unlike the Shiite sect is similar to Christianity. They do not adhere to the laws of the ancestors and they believe Corruption of the Qur’an They believe in the coming of the expected Mahdi at the end of the world The Awaited Mahdi has a holy book other than the Qur’an, and from the similarities between Shiites and Christianity, both Ali and Christ are gods who sacrificed their lives for the sake of pardoning the sins of the believers.

  • Thanks for the great content. It was a very good account on the divisions of Islam. I would, however, also mention the significant similarities between the two main sects. For example, many of the hadiths, although from different sources (eg Sahabah vs Imams) they convey the same meaning, or even are identical. Or the the backbone of most rituals, despite differences in details, are more or less the same (5 time prayers, Ramadan fasting, Hajj, etc.).

  • Thank you for your unbiased, and professional presentation of the differences between the two major sectors of Islam. Please keep up the good work. There is a minor inaccuracy, or I might have misunderstood what you're saying as English isn't my language. @10:02 Shia's don't believe that the Quran is incomplete. Otherwise, it means that their religion is incomplete, and that contradicts the verse: "Alyauma akmaltu lakum deenakum wa atmamtu alaykum nimati.." from "Almaida: 3" What Shia's believe however, that Quran has "tafseer", and has "taweel". Anyone that knows Arabic literature can basically understand Quran, which is what tafseer means. Now if everyone's tafseer is credible or not, that's a different subject. Taweel in the other hand is being able to understand the metaphorical meanings of the verses of the Quran. So, in order to understand the deep meanings of Quran, you have to get that from the source, which Shia's believe that Ali and his descendants have been taught this knowledge. Hence, why Jaffaris follow their imams, and base their "ahkam" on their hadeeths in addition to the Quran. And, sorry for the long comment.

    • no. some shia sects and especially ithna asharis believe in tahreef of the quran. they believe the quran we have now isnt the real quran and that the real quran is 3x the size of the "sunni" quran that we have now and that all the verses that were "erased" are all about ali.

    • @@alaadx you can lie all you want i'll just post proof of what i said for people to judge. - proof of shias believing in tahreef: Aboo `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام) said: “The Qur’aan that Jibra’eel brought to Muhammad (صلى الله عليه واله وسلم) had 17,000 verses” all of your most respected muhaddith say this report is SAHIH. the quran we have does not have 17 000 verses but it is around 6000 which is 3x more like i stated in my comment. - proof of shias believing that the tahreef is sunni hiding ali verses. QURAN 33:71 READS AS FOLLOW : He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment. SHIA NARRATION IN AL KAFI : [(with his chain) Abu Basir, from abi `Abdillah (as), regarding Allah’s saying: “And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger in loving `Ali and loving of the leaders after him has certainly attained a great attainment” He (as) said: “This is how it was revealed.”] CLEARLY SHOWS SHIAS BELIEVE ALI WAS REMOVED FROM THE VERSE. WANT MORE? QURAN 20:115 READS AS FOLLOW : And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination. SHIA NARRATION IN AL KAFI : [(with his chain) from `Abdullah bin Sinan, from abi `Abdillah (as) regarding Allah’s saying: “And We had already taken a promise from Adam concerning Muhammad, `Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, Husayn and the leaders from their progeny, but he forgot” He (as) said: “By Allah, this is the way it was revealed upon Muhammad (saw).”] QURAN 2:90 READS AS FOLLOW : How wretched is that for which they sold themselves - that they would disbelieve in what Allah has revealed through [their] outrage that Allah would send down His favor upon whom He wills from among His servants. So they returned having [earned] wrath upon wrath. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment. SHIA NARRATION IN AL KAFI : [(with his chain) from Jabir, from abi Ja`far (as), he said: “Jibril (as) revealed this verse to Muhammad (saw) like this: How wretched is that for which they sold themselves - that they would disbelieve in what Allah has revealed about `Ali through [their] outrage.”] I CAN GO ON AND ON ALL DAY AL KAFI HAS MORE THAN A THOUSAND NARRATIONS ABOUT TAHREEF AND ABOUT HOW SUNNIS "HIDE" THE TRUTH ABOUT ALI. YOU ARE EITHER 1) IGNORANT AND TRY TO LECTURE PEOPLE WHEN YOU SHOULDNT or 2) LIKE I SAID YOU DO TAQIYYA JUST LIKE YOUR SCHOLARS ASKED YOU TO. - "Ah, bad news bro. You know nothing about ithna asharis" im tryin to not embarass you, keep poking me and ill start talkin about all of your shirk. YOU WANT ME TO TALK ABOUT MADAD YA ALI AND ABOUT HOW YOU ASK THE DEAD FOR HELP THROUGH TAWASSUL? WANT ME TO TALK ABOUT YOUR IMAMS AND THEIR SUPER POWERS? WANT ME TO TALK ABOUT YOUR IMAMS THAT KNOW THE GHAYB? WHICH CLEARLY GOES AGAINST THE QURAN? WANT ME TO TALK ABOUT YOUR IMAMS THAT KNOW EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE UNIVERSE AND EVEN WHO IS GOIN TO HELL JUST BY HEARING YOUR VOICE? ME TO TO TALK ABOUT ALI BEING THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE? MAY ALLAH GUIDE YOU.

  • Very educational. I actually learned of a 3rd empire the Safavid that I had not heard of. As one who follows Christian values (not perfectly all the time) I was raised Catholic but drifted away from the Church. I guess I just read too many Existentialists when i was young. Most interesting was the movement to move away from the more literal to an interpretive view of the original texts or teachings. The splits kind of remind me of denominations. Religion can bring people together or set them apart. I think I've come to accept friends and fellow humans who follow but hope against violence in differences and peace among both sides.
