I am Egyptian, my father lived in Yemen for 7 years, there he prayed in Zaydi mosques and realized that their prayer is identical to Sunni with one exception they didn't say Amen after reciting Al-Fatiha , my father was so well received in the community to the extent that they allowed him to perform the Azaan regularly and even give the Friday khutbah at the local mosque, the Imam of the mosque was friends with him, all this while being known as a Sunni Muslim from Egypt. Keep in mind the civil war in Yemen (North Yemen Civil War 1962) and the Egyptian involvement in that war was fresh in the collective memory of the Yemeni people at the time.

Thank you so much for this important explanation. Many years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Yemen (including Sana) but really had no idea about the beliefs of local people. Certainly I found the locals so friendly and hospitable compared to Riyadh where I was living. I have to say that despite being Sunni I find the theology of Zaydis very attractive.

My wife is from Yemen and when she lived in Yemen she thought of the Zaidis as an obscure community in the mountains. The Zaidis taking over Yemen was something no one expected.

From what I've read in my historical research, Zaydism grew prominent at least in the Southern Caspian (I'm not sure how similar the situation is for Yemen) because it was the fringe of the Islamic world in the 8th/9th centuries. Many Alid proto-Shias went there in order to escape Caliphal authority and they managed to gain many converts and supporters in the area which had been up to that point less influenced by Islam (many were still Zoroastrians). This is why it is assumed that the Daylamite Buyid emirs (Daylam being in Northern Iran on the Caspian coast) were originally Zaydis before embracing Twelver Shi'ism, though others have suggested that they may have been Twelvers from the start, and that Twelver/Imami missionaries also had a presence in the area for similar reasons.

Overall a nice and tidy introduction to the madhhab. I can't be too critical, as I've been a practising Muslim for 20 years and a student of the Zaydi madhhab for the last four or five. I would like to voice my appreciation for you at least pointing out that the division of views regarding the Sahabah into Batri, Jarudi, Sulaymani, etc. didn't reflect a reality on the ground. And that is indeed the case, as heresiographers like al-Shahrastani (author of al-Milal wa al-Nihal) seemed to be rather fond of such artificial stratification. In reality, the spectrum of opinions on them are scattered amongst scholars and Imams of the madhhab (e.g. with some Imams favouring 'tardiyyah' [saying 'May Allah be pleased with him'] for al-Shaykhayn [Abu Bakr and Umar] and others adopting 'tawaqquf'). You also mentioned the 'Hadawi' school, which I feel the need to point out is more like a Sunni madhhab of fiqh (and historically there were others, e.g. Nasiri and Rassi), and the one practised in the mainstream by the Zaydis of Yemen today. And regarding the portion highlighting the affinity between the Mu'tazilah and the Zaydis, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Manekdim (a famous commentator on the Usul al-Khamsah of al-Qadi 'Abd al-Jabbar) was actually a Zaydi Imam himself!

I recently wrote a paper on the impact of the VOC on trade in Yemen, specifically on the coffee trade and also came across the zaydis and their wars (which they called jihads, I didn’t know that was possible between muslims) against the ottomans. Funny to see your video on it now afterwards, I found Zaydism very interesting, but my topic was very different.

@@samibabar by December of last year, if I remember correctly, Ansar Allah (a group from Yemen that's one of the strongest in the country) decided to put up a blockade on the Red Sea for ships involved in trade with "Israel" in order to help Palestine in their national liberation struggle. Ansar Allah originated among Zayidis, although nowadays has people from other religious groups aswell.

zaydi here. 1. Imam Ali b. Husayn Zayn Al-Abideen is not one of our canonical Imams, negating the graph thing shown at multiple points 2. we lack almost every single Jarudi belief 3. the Imam is not the "highest authority in ijtihad," by necessity, although the person with that quality is often preferred for the role 4. Imam Al-Shawkani said Imam Ali deserved the caliphate, I dont know if calling him "Sunni" really grasps the nuance, he definitely rejected all alleigance to any school identity in favor of return to the quran and ahadith

As a Itna Ashari Shia ( twelver) who is a Syed Zaidi, we are descended from Zaid ibn Ali who is the first imam of the Zaidis I didn't know there was a sect called Zaidism. I just assumed when people said Zaidis they were speaking about us, very interesting learning about our cousins in fiqh.

I am descendent of zaid bin zain ul abideen so it always made me wanted to know about my ancestors like my mom side is Naqvi syed which was known for active role in Abbasid period but i learn about zaidi being killed during the reign of ummayad which created a spark of Abbasid revolt against ummayad as zaid was their son in law

Our maternal family are Sunnis and from the descendants of Sayyidina Zayd bin Ali and his son Sayyidina Yahya who also organised an uprising. One of our ancestors in the family lineage leading up to Zayd was called Sayyid Dawood Buzurg who was the governor of Kufa. Of course some many deny this, but it’s reported that Sayyidina Zayd was deserted by many of his supporters after showing unwavering support and respect for Sayyidina Abu Bakr as Sideeq and Sayyidina Umar رضي الله تعالى عنهم After this he called them the ‘Rafida’ which is term used for Shias today meaning something like rejectors.

Hi.i am from sanaa and the update of zaydism now is that 90% r similar to Sunnis except one major difference and that the Muslim r allowed to rebel against the unjust ruler in three stages: 1.Advising the ruler,if not worked then 2.civil disobedience(protest) 3.armed rebellion Sunnis r not allowed to rebel against rulers even if they whipped you, stole ur property and imprisoned you without right...in short term the ruler in Sunnis r treated like god and in zaidy somehow treated as prophet but not exactly
do you know most sunni believe rebeling against unjust ruler, it's just madhkalis (found in gulf countries and very little amount in North Africa) rest of sunnis which probably make more than 80% sunnis they do believe rebeling against unjust rulers

The king of Morocco should convert to zaydism and claim to be the imam. There's at least three great reasons for him to do so : - he can, since Hasan ibn Ali is his ancestor. - that would be a great reclaiming of the roots of his country, since Morocco was founded by Idris I, a zaydi imam himself. - that would really annoy Algeria, and as far as I understand it, that seems to be one of the main political goal of Morocco.

What was the reason behind the shia to adopt mutazilism as the foundation of their early theological doctrine than any other early kalam school such as Qadari, Jahmiyya, or even traditionist themselves?
Wasil ibn Ata, the founder of the Mu'tazila school, was closely linked to Imam Ali. Also, this logical approach was heavily pushed by Imam Jafar as-Saddiq, which even the Zaydi respect. Sunni Islam was also mostly ratified as a set of doctrines during the 1100s, and the reason based methodology was mostly removed from this newly merged sect to differentiate themselves from the Shia.
Shia didn't adopt any of their beliefs, having similar beliefs doesn't mean it was taken from them
I got excited when I saw this at first, but now I am disapointed. My dyslexic eyes thought it said Yazidism, which I have been very curious about. On my most recent playthrough of Crusader Kings 2, as I was trying to recreate a Greek Kingdom of Bactria, a Persian kingdom all converted to Yazidism. I looked into it and it sounds fascinating. I will still watch this video though. I like all of your work.

Well timed. I'm surprised you made no mention of how Zaiydism's notion of an Imam who "fights against oppressive regime" is directly behind the Houthis movement - it's civil war with Aden and it's more recent decision to cause trouble for israel's allies. .
The current activity of the houthi pirates neither targets exclusively, nor particularly harms The IDF and instead by disrupting maritime trade, has significantly increased cost of shipping for all goods passing through the region which leads to disastrous impacts broadly. Houthi leadership has claimed to only target Israeli vessels, which turned out to be a lie, to hurt Israel and help the Palestinians in Gaza, which I have trouble believing given their actions and the consequences of those actions. I don't believe their current actions constitute fighting oppression, and even if it may be perceived that way from within.

(with the minor caveat that there's always room for a little doubt when trying to read current affairs without the benefit of historical hindsight or research, of course) From the perspective of religious studies, though, it certainly matters most how the Houthi Zaydis see themselves, right? Those large public demonstrations by militants in Dana's really fit the aspect of Zaydism described. If I am honest, I can't say I find this particular branch of Islam to be very socially or politically healthy. I try not to judge, but ... Sometimes a religion sect really does deserve criticism.

@@pabloruano3421 pictures of prophets and key figures are usually strictly forbidden in Sunni Islam but sometimes allowed in Shia Islam (although it probably depends on the sub-branch), so I guess these pictures are from Shia artists, but are blurred in this video to avoid offense to other beliefs

In short we do not want the later generations who are unfamiliar with the context of the original art to misinterpret these art to be items of worship and to start worshipping it which is the biggest sin a muslim can commit@@pabloruano3421
