Hydraulic Pump + AC Compressor = Useful Unit

In this video we show you the connection of a hydraulic pump with an air conditioning compressor.
It is a useful device and has many advantages.
- The hydraulic system works only when we turn it on, thanks to which the oil, pump, seals wear much slower.
- The engine is not loaded all the time, so the fuel consumption is lower.
- In addition, the battery and starter have a much easier start of the engine when the hydraulics are not permanently connected.
This is part of a big project we are working on right now and we decided to show this element separately to show how it is made and how it works.

  • It took me a minute to figure out what you were doing. I thought you were using the AC compressor but what you wanted was the magnetic clutch assembly and the housing was convenient since you could install a different shaft to couple to the hydrolic pump. Nifty home made hydrolic pump.

  • Put a heavy duty microswitch to the lever by using a "B" cam, so the microswitch become depressed when you pull the lever in either direction, thus the pump only works when needed.

  • Nice work. I made a similar unit over 10 years ago using an ac clutch from a 1991 bronco. I made it for my 3 yard dump truck. It held strong, never slipped, and never failed. I sold that truck last year and that clutch unit was still going well. That unit you made will work great and hold up to anything you throw at it. You are the only other person I've heard of doing this. Nice work!

  • That’s very resourceful! I’m just trying to grasp the reason for it though. Cause a hydraulic circuit will be able to drain back to the tank when it’s not being used while the pump is still going. The only real benefit I see of this setup would be if you were running a hydraulic motor from the pump, you’d be able to start and stop it electrically.

    • Nope. A/C compressors are built to compress gas with a little oil and liquid Freon. But Hydraulic fluid would just stall it. BUT they make decent (Not great, but decent) air compressors ! My old 93 Yukon developed a leak in the evaporator and I didn't feel like fixing it (Plow truck anyway). But one day it dawned on Me that I could use it as an air compressor so I installed two wet side truck tanks (so I could bleed them occasionally) and a drier in the frame, put a switch in the dash for the clutch and it will build up enough air to run an impact if needed. I later installed a friction cable to the throttle so I could hold the throttle speed up. About 1200rpm works great. I'm a diesel mech so I have access to stuff. But good question.
