  • As I grew up I watched my parents and grandparents bullied by racist comments. My siblings and I were called every racist name and threatened physically. I was taught to keep my head down and not cause a scene. But my body and mind had a strong urge to fight racism. Fast forward. My parents are gone and I’ve learned to let that rage out and fight back when I hear and see racism. Every time I stand up against racism it’s the family’s voice that had been silenced in all my past years.

  • The combination of the poem and cinematography…. ahhhh (sigh of happiness)✨immaculate✨ * CHEFS KISS * It's so well written, and powerful!!! Christopher Tse touched on a variety of issues Asian-Canadians have faced(and still face), which I appreciate. I wish I hadn't found this video two months late :( ! I'll be sending this to my English teacher because I'm sure she'll appreciate the mix of good poetry, and activism. :) As someone who is part Japanese, it breaks my heart that Asian heritage month, Asian history, and Asian struggles don't get nearly as much recognition as they deserve. istg anti-Asian racism isn't talked about enough and the world has been pretty messed up recently, and it made me so glad that you guys made a video (and campaign) specifically targeting all of it. All the racists that say we "deserve" this can go to the bad place too bc their logic is completely flawed. Nobody deserves hate for being themselves. I was so happy to see Kim’s Convenience there too :D *Here it is written out :* We have never been a loud people. Our elders always taught us That actions speak louder than words So we learned to keep our heads down Keep our grades up Keep our kin close Keep our mouth shut. I wonder? What it does to a people when they stay quiet for so long Do they forget their voice? The sound of their stories? The resilience of language? When you are no longer in your Mother land Does your mother tongue still sing of home? What work songs lifted our spirits as we built the railroad? What prayers did we whisper as they sent us to camps in the mountains to meditate on all the ways we don’t belong to this country? So we stayed quiet. As they burned our Chinatowns down And spit on our grandmas at bus stops We stayed quiet. As they laughed in our faces and told us, To go back to where we came from But they’ve mistaken our silence.. For compliance Looked on our meekness as weakness. See we are not the submissive stereotype that’s been depicted on silence, on us. They’ve gotten it twisted. Silence is golden. As are we. A gradient of yellow to brown, Every KoreanTown & Little Saigon - an act of defiance Every hunchback elder - A humble giant Silence is grace in the triumph. Is peace in the not. Silence is bold. A force. It is the brewing calm before the coming storm. And now the sky is splitting open and the rage is pouring forth So this is for, Every kid who’s tried to pull their nose bridge to make it taller, Everytime they mocked us cause our eyes are smaller. This is both for our elders alive and remembered. For their lessons - the tough and the tender. For our full names - past and present. May they be pronounced. May they be respected. For every shink in the national fabric, Every nip in the winter wind of prairie towns and northern Hamlets Coast to coast on stolen land. We are here. We’ve been here. From takeout joints to internment camps To internships and graduation caps, we are strong. We have pride. We fight. We fall. We rise. And to those who say we don’t belong? It’s them who should open their eyes. #ProudToBeAsian #StopAsianHate

It's hard to read with a changing background. Update: I discovered in KZhead in Settings-Subtiles/CC-'>'-Options, I can set 'Font Size=400%' and ''Opacity=100%' to get what I want.

  • It is time for Asians to rise up from their silence when they are mistreated for no other reason than their distinct appearance, dialects, or other unique cultural traits. It is never wrong to speak up when a social justice is experienced or observed as long as it is done peacefully. We know of the long-fought struggles of our fellow brothers and sisters from the black and indigenous communities to be fully accepted and treated as equals but there is not much awareness of the struggles from the Asian community until recently, even though historically it has been around a long time since the first immigrants landed in their new country. May mainstream media begin to highlight our plight and other racialized communities and for political and community leaders to take action to denounce mistreatment especially of late due the geographical origin of the Covid virus and its spread. God created us as human beings first, in His image. Let us all learn to love one another as Christ has taught us.

  • Maybe we can start calling ourselves: tan instead of Asian. Asian makes it sound like Asia is the only place where we are from and belong. People from Europe are not called Europeans; they are called white. People from Africa are not called Africans; they are called black. Black, white, red, tan, and brown are colors that exist in our universe. So, when Europeans are called white, they can fit in in America, Australia... If we allow ourselves to be pigeonholed into being called Asians, then Asians belong only to Asia. We become forever foreigners. Yet, if we call ourselves TAN, we are part of the color spectrum, belonging everywhere, not just Asia. We do not and should not be called yellow because of its perforative tone: yellow equals cowardly. Besides having a degrading meaning, yellow has two syllables. Tan has one syllable, just like white, black, red, and brown. Every racial and ethnic group on earth can refer to themselves as belonging to a single-syllable color found on Earth, but somehow East Asians are left out and ostracized. Why should we be singled out to be different as belonging to only one continent: Asia? We belong on God's green Earth like everyone else. We are TAN. Tan is a color found on every continent. We are TAN, and we belong in the Americas, in Europe, in Australia, in Africa, in Antarctica, in Asia. White, tan, red, brown, black- we are all part of the same color spectrum.
