I spent more time than I should have trying to break the Apple Watch Ultra. I couldn't really do it. The Series 8 on the other hand...that broke in one hit. Thanks to @lukemiani for helping me make this!

It’s insane that the pixels died before the screen cracked, I’ve never seen that before
yea that part actually impressed me
i saw it on techrex video too
The same thing happened to me about the 5 series, I made a wavy slide and found myself with a broken watch ...
my samsung J5 2 years ago dies without any crack on screen, this happen also to 3 another friends that have the same Samsung. it was a problem with the LCD that isn't quality as the glass. ------- I think apple can improve the LCD and they will make the most indestructible ever.
That's because the screen actually cracked beneath the cover glass. Happens pretty often with OLED (I'm working at phone repair service/shop and I've seen a lot of these)
This made me feel uneasy yet satisfied at the same time.
Yeah I have one and this is tough to watch. I’m at the 10:50 mark, I’m like stop it lol 🛑
The word cringe just doesn’t do it - but it’s great to see Apple finally make a watch that matches the price tag. Well done video.
Same here
Just drop it from vary high
Same
Legends say he's still throwing the watch till this day
Now I feel stupid buying a screen protector 😂 I knew the screen was strong, but wasn't expecting it to be this strong.
Yeah , i have a series 5 titanium and after 3 years the screen still looks new, it’s worth paying extra and not caring that much that you’ll scratch the screen and imo I don’t like adding screen protector or cases to my watch
I hope JRE checks out the glass's material
My series 5 had a bunch of scratches although it’s the aluminum.. I used a uv screen protector to cover the current scratches 😅
You don’t need one with the stainless steel or ultra. My series 3 stainless steel has zero scratches/dents. Pretty crazy glass tech.
Never ever feel stupid for buying a screen protector
Incredible job on this video! This is genuinely the only durability test that I have ever enjoyed! It might not have been the most scientific one but the most entertaining one for sure! But at the same time it was also some more realistic scenarios sorta, since normally you wouldn’t be sitting there scratching it with a pick. Seeing that series 8 did physically and emotionally hurt me tho.
Yes, this is exactly what I was waiting for. Now I can wear this ultra watch knowing it’s durable and not being afraid it will scratch or is going to be destroyed with normal use. Thank you!
Nice to see more a durability test that isn’t just smashing it with a hammer or using a tool to damage it (which have never correlated to my damage experiences irl). And here I was worried that it would scratch on door handles and gym equipment like all of my other Apple Watches.
Thank you for your scientific contributions. While I could never commit to such a move, someone needed to for us to know. Very glad to know my ultra will withstand all my normie type of moments of accidentally hitting shelves, walls, doors, etc. This thing will eat that like a champ.
I’ve had the Sapphire Crystal on the series 4 for 4 years and I use it at work; industrial construction and it looks brand new still!! I did up grade to the ultra though. If Apple didn’t make this one, I would have gotten an Epix. Thanks for the video!!!
Feeling so much pain watching this video but appreciate the effort you put in Sam!!
One of your best videos, this was soo informative, great job 🎉
Bro, this was the funniest video 😂. Blown away by the durability of the watch. I had a feeling it was really good, but not nearly this good. Great video!!
That hurt watching you rub those watches on the rocks!. it was scary, especially for such and expensive watch!!.Thanks so much for these crazy cool videos Sam!.Also it was great to see Luke as well!. Wow-This is the most insane and realistic testing I have ever seen. You really pushed that Ultra watch to the limit!. Thanks So much Sam,I really appreciate your efforts your dedication!!.You are so awesome!. Wow the Ultra was so crazy!.
When it sparked i was convinced that was the end.... NOPE! Sucking amazing!
Thanks for having rock climbing in mind for this review! I am on the verge of buying it specifically for climbing, but was not sure about the durability.
This video was just awesome! Thanks for going through all that
Lmao you guys are insane. This is awesome though. Thanks for the effort on this video! And it was fun! I miss the fun in your videos. You should bring back the skits/fun intros! Anyway that’s unrelated but yea this was great. 👌🏼
I'm still really hoping Zack can get one to test the screen to see if it's actually sapphire or if it was a hybrid. I'm going to be ordering one soon, very happy to get the Ultra over the Series 8, mostly for the durability and the battery life, this test is incredible, the pixels breaking before the crystal? That's insane.
Given the abuse it took I'm betting on real sapphire. The internals broke before the glass - amazing.
Yeah this is sapphire no doubt given the abuse
I work in a labour job (build and troubleshoot cell phone towers) so I’m working with a lot of tools, heavy steelwork etc etc and this is comforting to know how durable it is. I think I’ll still get some sort of skin/protector just for that extra layer. Can’t wait to get my ultra now!
Прошло 9 месяцев? Как вам часы и в каком они состоянии?))
@@Lucius2204 huh?
Your video literally sold me an ultra. I was on the fence thinking it wasn’t that much more durable and just full of hype. Definitely impressed.
Thanks for this review! This was the best I’ve seen
Good review ! Would have been better if you had compared ultra with stainless steel version of series 8
Thanks Sam, I bought the watch today and returned my series 8 and I was kinda skeptical but now I am definitely keeping the ultra. I was always worried about scratching the ion x glass of series 7 and 8 and I had screen protectors on. But, after watching your video, I’m gonna rock the ultra, naked, and show it off 😎
Im absolutely really enjoying your videos keep it up
Gotta love Luke, he waved hi (what a great smile btw) he waves hi and stops as if waiting for a response 🤭. Sam's not having any of this cuteness in his rough video, he's like moving on Period. 😂
Nice video! That is a very durable piece of tech. 😊
That one hit with the S8 was much harder then 90% of the hits with the ultra
True
True
Yea but it was more hit and later on it got hit hard You would be surprise how easy these watch break
That was more of a medium overkill hit*
Not at all
Amazing video idea and really well edited, keep it up ❤
Been waiting for this video , cool man 👍
I feel very confident that this watch would outlive me. If I took a hit at the level you threw it, I would have a lot more than a scuffed watch to worry about
This is what I was hoping for not what tech rax did
@Extremos ikr it’s just pointless
I was so anxious when you were smacking it on the wall, pole and the rock. Amazing durability review and hitting it for us. 🙌🏻
This was a true durability test if I ever saw one. I wonder if the Series 8 with a sapphire crystal screen would fair a little closer to the Ultra instead of the standard glass? Great vid!!!
Probably not, i think the flat screen on the ultra reduces the chance of breaking.
There is no question in my mind now. I am buying the ULTRA. Thanks for settling this in my mind :)
This convinced me to get the ultra
I’ve always had screen protectors on mine but I’ve found that hitting them on any kind of metal corner or bolt while working on something in an engine bay or around equipment will spiderweb them even with fairly minimal force, it would be interesting to see if the ultras screen can withstand that, seeing as the durability is 99% of why I bought one. I’ve got a case with a screen protector on it anyway because I’m never smart enough to just take it off before doing stuff.
How's it holding up? I work in a kitchen with a stainless everywhere, this is a pain with watches.
Great video! I ordered a screen protector but may just skip it. Sapphire is insane!
I can't imagine the reaction of people watching you hitting the watch on random objects 😂
I’ve been using the ultra for 2 full days and the battery % is at 48% 😮. I was shocked. I am going hiking this weekend so after seeing this ridiculousness I am convinced this is a prime investment! Thank you for sharing this!!!
Don't forget powerbank incase!!
How is the performance after ur recent hiking experience??
no way, im using ultra😂 if you are using cellular in it, it will only last for 24 hours
It is! I e had mine for a few months and love it
I went and purchased the ultra today after watching this video. Thanks 😊
This is the video I was waiting for before I bought this. Thanks now I can buy one confidently!
That pulley squeal and exhaust leak 😂😂 Getting my ultra tomorrow!!!
Got to be honest this video made me much more impressed with the Ultra. I would prefer the Stainless / Sapphire version of the 8 for durability over the Aluminum / glass version but the price is basically the same as the Ultra. I think I may go ahead and get the Ultra.
THANK YOU FOR DOING WHAT IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DO SINCE I PURCHASED THE AWU. Now I can rest 😅
Perfect review man!
Since the Apple Watch Series 3 I’ve always gone with the aluminium model but every time it’s either scratched up badly dented because bumped it into walls and doors So I’ve decided to get the Apple Watch ultra ultra because of the strongest sapphire crystal display
This is the kind of destructive testing that Apple just isn’t going to show you. Good job on the video, and I think I’m fairly safe not having a screen protector on my Ultra now.
What model is the Apple Watch 8, I didn't notice where you said. Is it the Stainless or the Aluminium one?
Best content yet.. the sparks were awesome..
Hurts to watch this but really good to know about the Ultra durability. I just tried one on at the Store (even though they’re sold out) but I was shocked how good it fit even though I have smaller wrists and currently rocking a 45mm Series 7. Also seems I’m a M on the Alpine Loop.
I’ve been wearing a series 7 45mm for a good while now and when the ultra got announced I wasn’t that into it. Just kinda like “that’s pretty badass for athletes, I bet marques will love it” but the more I watch videos on it the more I kinda want to buy one lol.
I would love to know if Apple used a different sapphire crystal on the Ultra compared to the Series 8. Crazy durability for the Ultra. Durability is why I have gone with stainless steel Apple Watches since the Series 2. The ion X glass doesn’t even compare to the sapphire. Well worth the extra money in my opinion. And with the Ultra this year, Apple is offering a great value. Some people say Garmin has nothing to worry about, that’s what Blackerry thought when the iPhone came out in 2007 😊 I would never pay $999 for a watch with a terrible user interface just to get 30 day battery life!
It's probably a combination of engineering and glass. It's like physics of adding beams into concrete. Concrete can absorb one type of force and steal another, but together they mitigate both. the lip around the glass and frame combined with glass is key to spreadng impact across a larger area and avoiding any singular impact point being more destructive.
@@mysticalos The crown guard was much needed as well.
This is called the real test I love itt appreciate you guys
Great test. Subscribed!
This is absolutely incredible! The Ultra is TOTALLY worth $800
$1,100 for me :(
@@teslacamman811 really? What country do you live in? For me its £850 but that includes tax as everything does in the uk. In America its $800 but that doesn't include taxes I don't think.
1000€ in germany
Bro 💀
@@Thron2111 same in Hungary. I got it today and I love it so far
I would I’d preferred it compared with the stainless steel model. The chamfered edge in the ultra looks beat
what a fun, insane and useful video!!! 😄😄😄 Thanks!!!
Is the S8 alluminium or SS as it will fair to compare Ultra with SS as has sapphire crystal screen?
Sapphire is the 2nd hardest stone on Earth right behind Diamond. That’s why it’s not scratching, lmfao. You’ll need a Diamond drill bit or a Sharp Diamond stone.
His Apple Watch Ultra on his wrist watching this: 👁️👄👁️
Thanks for the beautiful content!
Awesome video man!
Damn, he beat the watch so many times I wanted to call CPS.
😂
I don't know but I feel the curved glass on the series 8 has an effect on it( cause of it cracking fast). The ultra is really durable: )
Thank you for this real life test.
hey friend! what about when washing hands with soap? resists? maybe that is more dangerous than a hit. i just bought it and want to know your experience
Just got my apple watch ultra little big on my wrist but im loving it. From 42mm to 49 mm😅
I used to use a 38mm 💀
A titanium phone with that glass???? Perfection
LOL and I was considering to get a protective case for my Ultra. Great Video, straight to the point.
Random question.. So after this release if you could only buy one.. Would you upgrade from a IWatch 5 to an Ultra OR from a IPhone 11 Pro Max to IPhone 14 Pro Max? Both older versions still work fine, no damage. I’m leaning toward the Ultra and waiting for IPhone 15. Thanks
Yup get the watch and wait for possible USB-C iPhone next year
now we need that glass for the iphones
Does this sound mad, but I think the ultra looks really cool with the chipped case and mint screen.
I dont blame it but it does sound kinda mad ngl
THESE CLIPS I appreciate. (One last night was the iPhone 14 testing crash detection in an actual crash - some field, no people in a remote controlled car smashing into a junked truck. Detection test worked) Anyway...this is impressive. I had the Apple Sport and eh, that screen scuffed up in 7 days and not even sure how I did that. old AW4 Stainless Steel w/ stronger glass has been great to this day. Man, what a test...AW8..forget it. Ultra, I fully expect the Titanium shell to scuff and wear, but wow, that glass is crazy!
I would like to know how the ultra does against oils. I work on cars have been using a series 7 for a whole year. It has held up very nice. Not a single scratch on the screen. Body has tons. It’s gold. I just recently got some small nicks I could’ve prevented. Only thing I hate is I can’t find a black band anymore. I’ve spilled some transmission fluid on mine not a bunch just a little splash. Just wonder how much of it gets inside since it’s made to get into small places
Man I love the ultra ❤⌚️
Note: this is a comparison between the 'glass' standard Apple Watch series 8, and the Ultra, which is sapphire. I've always bought sapphire Apple watches since 2015, never a scratch on the display not even once. Sapphire / Stainless steel is always worth the extra $$ especially if you'll keep it for multiple years as I do. Ultra is great value, being only a little more expensive than the stainless steel / sapphire version of Apple Watch 8.
I have a "Series 0" steel/sapphire Apple Watch, and I actually got a bunch of what looks like scratches on the display. I'm almost certain it's the anti-glare/anti-reflective coating being scratched, and not the sapphire itself, but it still looks bad. I'm honestly surprised your 2015 Apple Watch has no visible "scratches" on the display. I was so disappointed in how the sapphire screen ended up looking that for my next Apple Watch (Series 4), I just got the aluminum/ion-x glass version (which also, not surprisingly gets scuffed up pretty bad). I'm glad it seems like Apple is no longer putting that coating on the Ultra's sapphire. For context, this is a thing with non-smart watches as well. As an example, Omega often puts AR (anti reflective) coatings on both the underside & top of their sapphire crystals, and as such, they do get scuffed up pretty easily (lots of reports/videos online about this). Whereas Rolex/Tudor only put AR coatings on the underside of their sapphire crystals, so while they won't look as crisp new (due to the increased glare), they are as scratch resistant as the Ultra is in this video.
thats the video ive been waiting for
Very impressed, bravo apple & great video!! I like the hit counts too! Perfect
Probably best to put a case around the titanium part 😅
I have done that and put a screen protector on it, I know the screen is seemingly almost indestructible, but knowing my luck I would get the Ultra that cracks 😂 The case I brought looks really nice on the watch and stopped me worrying about scraping it across a wall whilst I’m out on a photography trip, whilst I’m doing that I often drag my watch on walls without knowing it.
@@UHDGamers-re2xj which case did you end up going with?
i think we need to check if it’s bullet proof🤔
Yes shoot a gun at it !
Don’t give em ideas 🫣
Thank you so much for this video!!!!
Thank you for this video
I'm imagining you trying to return this using AppleCare. All I can picture are guys looking at this and going "WTF did you do? Fall off of a mountain and hit every rockon the way down???"
🤣
Dude you may have changed my mind based on the durability compared to my 7. As an AG field tech I need all the durability I can get
The stainless versions of the watches have more durable crystals.
Thanks! This is what I wanted to know
The best crash test so far 😂👍🏻
Now I want an iPhone Ultra please.
Well, no Apple Care this year for me :)
I'm curious, does anyone know if the titanium of the apple watch ultra has some specail surface treatment? If not, no wonder it scratches up so easily, als raw titanium is signifficantly softer than stainless steel... Good for apple tho they finally use real sapphire on one their products and not surface treated tempered glass. Sapphire btw is way is almost unbreakable. I equipped my sportswatch with a thick aftermarket sapphire crystal and it still has not a single scratch despite having had rough ground contact more than once that even caused severe movement damage more than once. So don't worry, this crystal will probably last a lifetime or at least up until the next battery swap, that will most likely destroy the screen, because Apple thought it was a good idea to make the battery only accessible through the screen...
Is it waterproof still tho?
I feel like he did it harder with the regular 8 lol
It would've been fairer to test the Ultra against a stainless steel model which has always had a sapphire crystal display.
I had the same observation almost immediately. The sapphire glass wasn’t advertised to have been strengthened since the first Apple Watch. The Ultra seems to have the same glass as the stainless steel series 5 on my wrist and series zero in my drawer. That said, I’d still bank on the ultra’s display being a bit more durable because it sits flat instead of curved like the Series Stainless Steel displays.
Good observation. I don't think it would've done much though. The curving class on the series 8 is supposed to be more durable than the series 4 design. I highly doubt that is the case. The curving class on the 8 makes it so the casing around it probably wouldn't do much to the watch.
@@mathmanchris666 that is not what we meant. The watch that comes with the stainless steel case has the same sapphire crystal screen as the ultra and as the previous titanium models. The aluminum models have what they call Ion X glass. I have a series 3 stainless steel watch that has been dropped, hit against walls, scrapped and the screen is intact. Meanwhile, people usually scratch up the aluminum model's screen near instantly.
But does the side button get stuck like every other Apple Watch I owned, and it always is the reason I get another one because it’s not cost effective to get it fixed
Crazy and amazing...thanks guys
That Ultra better be indestructible for it being $800.
You‘re acting like this was a ridiculous price for this product.
@@monsi9626 it is. $600-$650 would be a fair price
@@monsi9626 stop being so judgemental. $800 is a lot of money period. 💰
@@TheGoDoT96 let me know when you find another titanium Watch for 600$ besides the Samsung watch5 pro
Spoiler alert… it is
I’m afraid to buy the watch for getting a scratch on it. My man is literally dragging the watch around. 😂
That proves that it’s built to last
@@abbystephens9766 you’re 100% correct.
I’ve liked this video and subscribed, because you deserve it 😳
This video hurt my soul. I will never do this to my ultra but nice to know what it can withstand.
Just removed my screen protector
Considering taking mine off too now
How is it holding up so far? I work in a industrial environment and I take this Watch with me to work so I’m afraid of cracking or scratching the glass.. I have broken two screen protectors at work 🥺
So do I buy a screen protector or not?
Did fall detection or crash detection activate during dragging it on the street? I’m surprised if it didn’t.
This is a good video very informative excellent video footage
