What 8 Disney Live-Action Remakes Looked Like Behind The Scenes | Movies Insider

Disney's live-action remakes of its animated classics have become a box-office staple over the years. In order to make a photorealistic world of talking animals, "The Jungle Book" and "The Lion King" relied on innovative virtual production techniques.
"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" made Angelina Jolie look like she was flying through the air, and "Mulan" used wire work to allow its heroes to do gravity-defying stunts. In "Aladdin," Will Smith donned a motion-capture suit, which allowed the film to create the Genie with CGI while still giving the character the actor's signature moves. And "Beauty and the Beast" built its sets from scratch whenever it could.

    • Honestly, Neel Seethi deserves more recognition for his acting. He did a great job in the movie, let alone the fact that he had to act without seeing the actual animals (only puppets and other stand-ins) and that he was a newcomer and this was his first movie.

  • I still find it absolutely INSANE that there isn't a Stunt or Stunt Choreography award in the industry! Shame on the people who run it. One of the only professions in film where people actually die while working on movies.

    • THERE IS! lol The Taurus World Stunt Awards is a yearly award ceremony held midyear that honors stunt performers in movies. It is held each year in Los Angeles.

      @kittyantix@kittyantix4 жыл бұрын
    • @TheSportsGuru I know people in the industry who want to be recognized. Doesn't seem fair to them that an outside governing body is telling them what is and isn't worth it. It's a fair point, but considering stunt people already go above and beyond it's silly that there isn't ANY recognition. Not to mention Taurus is coordinated and paid for by people in the industry; stunt companies and personal donations whereas the Academy Awards are backed by 1000's of individuals from every background of film, including the big name film companies and HUGE sponsors. The dangers associated with the job are well understood by the people who do them, its a part of the job they signed up for.

      @alvinoflys7504@alvinoflys75044 жыл бұрын
    • @TheSportsGuru As a former competitive gymnast I know a little something about it 😉 Like I said it's a fair point, but that doesn't diminish the fact that people who actually work in the industry want it. We're all adults here. In fact talking to friend who is a stuntman he said the only downfall would be more education about proper safety on set.

      @alvinoflys7504@alvinoflys75044 жыл бұрын
    • Omg did someone ever die doing that!!?? If so who?? Just curious 😊 thats insane

      @reberv6303@reberv63033 жыл бұрын
    • TheSportsGuru We’re an industry that needs more education? Lol! Classic. Nothing like people who aren’t in our business giving arguments about our business. You think the award shows don’t have a class for us because we would try to hard and it would be a competition? Force others into competing when they think it’s a bad idea? Where did you come up with this BS? We don’t force anyone into anything. We are competitive, yes, that’s what makes us better. You want the best on set for certain stunts. Yes we have the Taurus awards and we are also recognized by the Screen Actors Guild but we don’t show up on set thinking of gee, I have to go big to get an award. That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in awhile. 🤦🏻‍♂️ We have directors and scripts that require us to build action sequences to match story points. That’s our job, to create dynamic action as safely and daring as the story, director and budget demands. It’s very choreographed depending on the sequence and can be very dangerous but we are a team on set, we look after one another like family. At the end of the day we all want to go home without any injuries. That’s what it’s about. Sure some of us may be recognized at a later date for a daring stunt but we do not go to work on a normal day thinking about award shows. Maybe you shouldn’t be here giving answers to questions or a business you don’t have experience in.

But technical skill and talent are two different things: the cgi of jungle book looked fine, but the character designs and human-like faces of the animals looked weird because no one gave enough fucks to stay at it until it was absolutely perfect. And Aladdin is just the cheapest-looking 200 mill movie I've ever seen.

That's where I learned that the T-rex shot was successful despite the low tech capabilities, because of the wet gloss of the rain and the way most of it was cast in shadow. Much easier to make that look real than something in clear daylight, and much more terrifying! As for the rest, some velociraptor cuts were humans in suits, and the ill triceptacores was an animatronic rigged to blink and breathe.

    • I saw a place that was used as a dump spot to break down and throw away movie sets created in films in Van Nuys,Ca. I was walking around and noticed a strange looking miniature town covered by a fence in which I snuck in. I was enthralled by the scenery..A large Car sized Bank Vault, Saloons with those Wooden Door Flaps,A Law Office made of Black Glass and Amazing Chandeliers,A Lifeguard Box,& Police Station. I also saw lots of scripts and Crime Scene Forensic Items. I was so busy acting out my own scenes and spinning in each room like a Disney Princess enthralled by the Magic and Awe of it all. I saw a crime scene and touched a script. Then a Security Guard popped in and said you've been here the whole time??How long? I expressed I came in peace and he said he knew that and that's why he didn't call the police. He was watching me on a monitor the whole time. He said I could take a script home which was highlighted,written on and signed by certain actor. He said every set costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to build and they came to this location to be destroyed. I told him I wanted to take it all with me. He said the script was all I could take. He then tells me Boston Public,Csi, Baywatch and a Western Show Actor Timothy Olymphant was in was what these sets were filmed for. I couldn't help but stay in character and noted how each piece of scenery was pivotal to the creation of a state of make believe and how I was caught in a state of disbelief,enhanced imagination and awe just being in it's presence. The Guard said he was enchanted by my presence and he saw how enthralled I was with the surroundings he didn't want to disturb me,yet all good things must come to an end.The Script was my parting gift. I had to Hug the Guard as I was moved by what I saw.This Guard was kind to let me escape into another world if only for a brief moment in time,which seemed to stop for me. This "accidental break in" (There was a hole in the fence) further cemented my decision and path to continue to follow my dreams..

That kid that played Mogli though, I'll never for the life of me figure out how he managed to be so absolutely convincing when he was talking to bloody puppets, dudes in blue suits/paint and hands with googly eyes on them!

    • Belbecat THANK YOU. i myself prefer the originals. but the beauty of the remakes is undeniable. people are really criticising the remakes. Walt Disney wrote in his will that the disney classics are remade every 10 years so every child gets to experience the magic of disney, so people should be more respectful. children now aren’t gonna wanna watch 70’s, 80’s films.

    • Have yall tried theatre before? Because theatre students do laugh during rehearsal sometimes. When we are rehearsing some awkward scenes you really can't stop laughing in the first tries. But as the adrenaline dies down and when people are getting tired of rehearsing the same scenes again and again, they'll start taking it seriously.

    • @Harrison TranI'm not really sure but i think actors from both fields are relatively the same. We're fundamentally the same and actors from both fields can switch to the other. We just have different budget, audience and art forms. But as i said I'm not sure i never met someone who acted in a film so there's that.

    • Anonymous Garfield Are you kidding me?! What CHILD wouldn’t want to watch Cinderella (1950)or the Little Mermaid (1989) or even The Lion King (1994)). They remake films because of the profits and if you think otherwise then you CLEARLY don’t know Disney, my friend 😂. Also if you’re so worried about the people behind the scenes, then maybe Disney should do more ORIGINAL live actions like Enchanted and rebooting the classics we had so dear to our hearts.

    • her dress just looks and feels so... flat? in the animated film, her dress always looked so light despite the ribbons and extra fabric, so i’m sure they could’ve come up with a more similar design that still felt light without being boring and flat.
