Disney live-action movies feature some of the most incredible costumes, hairstyling, makeup and prosthetics that bring our favorite fairy tales to life. But wearing these iconic costumes wasn’t always easy for the dedicated actors. Angelina Jolie spent hours having her face poked and prodded to apply and remove her prosthetics as Maleficent. Lily James has to wear a corset so tight to fit into her Cinderella ball gown that people thought her waist had actually been digitally shrunk. And you won’t believe how painful those glass slippers really were.
Emma Watson loved Belle’s yellow ball gown in Beauty and the Beast, but it was deceptively thick. Meanwhile, Dan Stevens got an even worse end of the deal and had to wear a heavy muscle suit with stilts to become the beast. Emma Stone also got to experience some incredibly heavy fashions as Cruella-- she had super long trains on some of her dresses that she could barely even walk in. The award for most insane makeup might go to Alice in Wonderland, though-- Helena Bonham Carter had an entire fake forehead as the Red Queen and Johnny Depp wore crazy contacts as the Mad Hatter.
From Will Smith’s skin-tight motion capture suit and Naomi Scott’s tightest Prince Jasmine dress to Mulan’s heavy fighting outfits, costume designers like Colleen Atwood and Sandy Powell have worked real movie magic. But which Disney live-action flick do you think had the most painful costume or most uncomfortable makeup? Click play and let’s find out.

      @tsundereyoongi3869@tsundereyoongi38692 жыл бұрын
    • @@tsundereyoongi3869 they kind of were for aesthetics though. You wore a corset to achieve the fashionable silhouette of the time, but rather than pulling in the waist to the point of passing out, the corsets were designed to widen at the hips. The specifics depend on the time period, and this isn’t to say that they weren’t tight, they were, but not like the movies like to play it. Women did not have to brace themselves on a bedpost while four other women pulled the laces as tight as they could. But you’re right, aesthetics were not the only point, because the corsets did support a woman’s back since the skirts and petticoats could be quite heavy. The reason actresses complain about corsets is because they often aren’t made for that actress, or they weren’t given enough time to break them in. Edited to fix my many typos

They put themselves through torture so you can be entertained. They say so THEMSELVES that it's hell doing what they do. Some have even died on the job and or seriously hurt themselves doing things that you wouldnt even think would be painful to do. Example, the actress Keira Knightley, from Pirates of the Caribbean nearly passed out because of the dress she was wearing. It was so tight she couldn't breathe. The actress Emilia Clarke, from Game of Thrones is missing parts of her brain due to having a brain aneurysm and suffered strokes to the point where she wanted to die and couldn't remember her own name. And everyone knows Jackie Chan's story along side all the stunt doubles from every movie/tv show and what they go through. But thats not torture? It went from late 1700’s France to 2013 prom with her dress alone. Very disappointing. They could’ve done SO MUCH better while still taking comfort into account is what I’m saying. If college age cosplayers can do better than that dress then Disney should be able to as well.

      @kyoko2752@kyoko27522 жыл бұрын
  • Issues with corsets and actresses are that they almost never wore chemise underneath and wear a corset on their bare skin-which wasn't done historically because it irritates the skin and is very uncomfortable to do. (This is done to create a 'sexier' look.) Another issue is that even if they have a corset made up to fit perfectly(which is not always the case-and then it can hurt), are timelines of wearing it. The corset is probably finished not long before production starts and the actress cannot 'break it in'. If you're new to corsets you shouldn't immediately lace it too tight, but rather adjust it over several weeks, always a bit tighter. If you do it immediately, it will be hell. That is why modern actresses state how uncomfortable and hell it was to wear corsets. Because honestly, they are doing it wrong! Because production forces them and they are not aware that it doesn't have to be painful to wear corsets-hence they don't take it against the production of the movie. Historically speaking corsets weren't so bad as we're lead to believe. But during the 19th-century changes to design meant that some women were able to tight-laced it to the extreme. So these nutcases obsessed with their looks(just as women obsessed nowadays with dieting or plastic surgery) tied corset too tight and it could have lead to injuries. Also, corsets became the social norm(woman without corset started to be seen as a bad woman) and during the 19th-century poverty grew rapidly and not everybody could afford to have a tailored corset that fitted them or even used one which was sort of ok-hence lots of poor women had ill-fitted clothes, including corset. But tight corsets are relatively new garments, unlike what historical movies show you-the women in Europe historically wore for far longer their stays-predecessor of a corset, a garment which in no way harmed anybody. On contrary, just as well-fitted corset it provided great support for the bust even to ladies well endowed in that area and hence those women had much fewer back issues. Modern bras are failing in that regard.

I don't want to be wrong. But from what I have read and seen they seemed much more Arab than the protagonists. It is interesting that you are Arab! • Other nooks of youtube inform me that corsetry needn't be uncomfortable, so there's no excuse for it in highly physical scenes. I would kind of expect that acrobats wearing corsets might actually benefit from the right one to balance body weight and keep their spine and body aligned--might that be the reason for the historical accuracy of corsets in Dumbo?

    @myragroenewegen5426@myragroenewegen54262 жыл бұрын
    • They probably laced them too tight. I can definitely see that being the case in Cinderella. If it's made to fit the person's body, and laced to the point where breathing isn't inhibited, there shouldn't be a problem. I've made dresses that lace up the back quite tight, but it's never more than 3" waist reduction. Any more than that, especially if not used to it, and it would certainly be difficult to wear. I can see the point with acrobats, but from what I've seen talking to gymnasts, having your back being flexible is one of the most important things. Someone I know had a curved spine, having to get a rod in her back and after that she couldn't do any gymnastics. I guess it's what you get used to, because it's certainly possible with practice.

  • Unsure if some of these things were painful, like the fact that it was a big effort to make Belle's dress and it had many layers does not mean it was painful to wear. None of these looks are inherently uncomfortable. Not even corsets if they are fit correctly (I have one and its very comfy). I do think the motion capture suits can be hard to wear it's amazing that they can work in those for so long! The only costume pain I really believe is Lily James about the tight corset because she actually said it was tight and it looked very restrictive on screen. Still interesting to see what went into these looks!

      @eosdawn6399@eosdawn63992 жыл бұрын
    • Honestly if it was historically accurate, the corset wouldn’t have been restrictive. The corset was used like a bra, and you wouldn’t have it THAT tight unless your upper-class and could afford to restrict yourself from some small amount of movement since upper class women tended to have less work to do.

    • The corset is coming for you though every human being is different and you people need to remember that everybody’s different everybody is different and that doesn’t mean they didn’t put the corset on right or anything like that doesn’t mean that sometimes things are uncomfortable with some people because some people don’t like it or whatever I I don’t like horses they’re uncomfortable to me and I know a few other people there I can’t before so you can’t speak for everybody on that it was uncomfortable for them every person is different

      @tammiepage6489@tammiepage64892 жыл бұрын
    • @@SailorVenus-iz6zp agreed. A decently well cut corset feels way more comfortable than most underwire bras. The only bras I have that aren't uncomfortable are from 1960s designs and have extra hooks, wide bands and support. My corsets are fine, no worse than a high-impact spandex sports bra. Nothing digging in unless it's overtightened. Most people who think otherwise have never tried a classically cut corset.

Makeup and prosthetics application/removal should never hurt unless your makeup artist is doing it wrong. Corsets can be a bit restricting and take a while to get used to, but they should not be tight enough to cause pain or stop you from doing daily activities.

I don't give a fuck. It's your job. Stop whining.". Because ALL OF THIS wouldn't happen if Disney would invest their money more wisely. But noo. Instead of making sure the actors don't go through hell and die on set they throw around money to get crystals and shit THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE LATER. Tf are they doing?!🤦🏻‍♀️

    • My only complaint about this comment that hasn't been mentioned is that makeup and specifically prosthetics removal isn't a fast process at all. Most likely the prosthetics had either moved during the wear and tear of shooting or the actor was in a rush to have it removed. That is probably why their removal was called painful. Also contacts. The membranes of the eyes are incredibly delicate and become irritated quicky. Like if my regular day to day contacts are worn too long they hurt like hell. 16 hours with contacts in is super unpleasant let alone sclera contacta like Jim Carrey wore in the live action Grinch movie.

  • People are talking about well they make all that money so they can’t complain and just. No. I don’t care how much money you make you deserve basic safety standards in your workplace. Like corsets like Cinderella‘s that aren’t properly fitted can give you permanent damage on your bones. I should probably know more about the female actors since they’re expected to look so ridiculously skinny but I mainly know a lot about the male actors who had to look unrealistically buff. They said you’re supposed to have 3 to 4% body fat went on screen that they get heads up on shirtless scene so they can dehydrate themselves for 34 hours to make sure they get that veiny look, that they primarily eat these weird gelatinous cube‘s that are supposed to help them lose weight and sometimes little else, and the same goes for musicians. Like I don’t know why you could possibly think that a 16 hour workday is normal but it is when you’re a preformer there are hundreds of videos out there of performers collapsing on stage from how hard they’ve been worked. Like it’s one thing if you sign up for a job as a stuntman or a football player or something that’s actually supposed to be physical and something accidentally happens, it’s another altogether for it to be planned that your bodies going to get hurt in a job that I absolutely does not require it. And they don’t get told about most this stuff before hand either, it gets sprung on them AFTER they’ve signed contracts.

Corset dresses can be fun, but realistically, you can't do much more than 2"-4" reduction without a lot of time breaking it in and working up to it. And weight limits are definitely important. I saw a video about a vintage chair thing that could be worn under a dress as a bustle, and oh that would make things so much easier. But full honesty, I've never made a dress that big before.

  • Corsets are some of the most comfortable things to wear. I do absolutely believe the actresses when they say they were painful though because I doubt the corsets were fitted properly and the actresses had time to break them in. It's a shame corsets continue to get a bad rep because large film studios just don't care about undergarments fitting well or their actors being comfortable

  • *belle's dress was the most comfortable* But... I guess it needed to be a bit more puffy to match the era

    • @Yay Yay its ok Atleast it was not as tight to make you suffocated like Cindrella's dress Even thought C's dress was more accurate, it was no where near as relaxed It was more tight and compact which makes it hard to dance in...Or even move in!

      @enakshiparua836@enakshiparua8362 жыл бұрын
    • @@tsundereyoongi3869 yea.... I choose not to agree with you on that one A dress can be perfect even if it is designed by a feminist Maybe it was not accurate but it was pretty And who cares about accuracy when its comfortable and not a literal poofy cramped heck The dress is supposed to be based on the choice of the person who wears it Maybe Emma was not comfortable with wearing a suffocating piece of cloth like Cindrella was Its totally her choice

      @enakshiparua836@enakshiparua8362 жыл бұрын
    • @@enakshiparua836 I didn’t say a feminist couldn’t design a perfect dress, the emphasis was on the fact that her modern views took over from the fact that this is supposed to still be based in history… a lot of people care about accuracy, because what’s the point of playing a role if you’re just going to change everything to fit your views? If she didn’t want to play the part as a figure based in a historic time, then she shouldn’t have taken the responsibility of the role. I have nothing against feminism, I myself I’m somewhat a feminist in some aspects, but you cannot take over the past and historic fact with modern ideals, it’s inaccurate and starts changing history. It might be just a fairytale, but it’s not right to start messing up what would’ve been accurate back then. If it was a modern retelling, then she could’ve done what she wanted. But quite frankly, she ruined the dress just because she wanted to make an out of place statement. I don’t believe it was her choice, she was playing belle, so she should actually play belle, not herself.
