What a great loss it was that 50cent basically shafted the guy out of the right training he would need to become dominant in the sport. He was still fairly good despite all that mess dragging him down. Top fella I reckon.

    • Hunger and homeless are almost non existent in Cuba. I highly doubt he had to sell than medal to support his family. Edit: From what I can tell he did to pay for a birthday party for his daughters first birthday, which is noble but she wasn’t gonna starve if he didn’t do that.

Also here in the usa most amateur boxers and lots of pros have to have another job to get by cuz they have to pay for things like rent and trainers. Unlike Cuba where they provide public access to the top fighters and trainers, they dont have to worry about outta control rent prices, and have public Healthcare so they don't chase to pay for their own medical in a nation with the highest medical costs in the world and where medical bills are the leading csus eof bankruptcy. Lets not pretend poverty is something unheard of in the usa, especially among amateur boxers or fathers in their late teen/early 20s as he was at the time...

One moment you're on top with the entire world screaming your name, and then the next you're forgotten or ignored by promoters who only want to fatten their pockets at your expense. Gamboa had a spectacular run, and he's one of my modern favorites because of it.

  • Great work as always. I think it was Roy Jones jr who put it best when he said that he was relying way too much on his speed and natural talent, which could fade across time and weight upgrade. That's when fundamentals come into play, which he lacked, being the natural talent that Gamboa was.

  • A start of this fight I remember saying to myself that Gamboa was too fast for Crawford to catch. But then he got over confident. If he stayed with his style and gameplan during that early rounds to finish the fight he would have won it by unanimous decision. But that's the beauty of boxing.

    • You don’t think Crawford adjustments had anything to do with it?

      @devante_9346@devante_93463 жыл бұрын
    • @@devante_9346 nah... Gamboa got over confident with his early success in the fight and abandoned what was working. Once he opened up and began trying to trade, Crawford began to use his ability to counter and pick his spots. Crawford was dead in the water. Speed is hard to overcome in a controlled state, once it gets out of control it's all down hill from there.

    • Gamboa was a beast at featherweight but he didn't do anything noteworthy at lightweight. He's a textbook example of a fighter who lost the edge that made him great by moving up (and inactivity). Crawford is turning 33 soon and the fact that a former featherweight from 6 years ago remains his most accomplished opponent doesn't saying much about the depth of his resume.

It's not enough to be talented, have work ethics, the right timing, etc. Boxing is a business. And there's a side to it majority of us don't see. One wrong decision can cost you your career, even tho you can do everything else perfectly. It's a shame we didn't get to see him fulfull his full potential. Nevertheless, a great and exciting fighter in his prime.
