Transitioning from one piston aircraft to another, but moving up to an 800hp+ engine that makes the TBM930 the fastest turbine aircraft in the world is a whole different ball game. Today we're joined by a TBM owner and pilot to discuss the transition moving up from piston aircraft into the world of turboprops.

Nice to see you are committed to fly as professionally as you can on such a capable machine as the TBM. Good for you and have safe and fun flying!
I am 1000% on board with the whole SAFETY issue! So, recurring training every 3 months is right up my alley! And, as you say; make it both Fun and Challenging!!!
Great video mate! I've got some time in the TBM and you really explained the transition so well! Keep them coming
Thanks so much! Really appreciate that.
Excellent info and congrats on flying the beautiful turboprop!
This aircraft is so beautiful! Inside and outside.
That cargo door is a freight dog's dream come true! Beautiful airplane. Congrats!
Glad I stumbled onto yours and the sons channel. Very well put together. Cool planes too!
You've got a sweet ride there. Thanks for the info. I'll check out your other videos. I agree about the seaplane rating in Alaska. I got mine there a couple years ago and will actually be releasing my next YT video about that tomorrow.
How does it compare to a BE 200 ? Got my ATP rating in the BE 200 big change from the Cessna 172.
I will never get close to anything like this aircraft. Thank you for explaining this beautiful plane. Go...go 👍
Excellent video. Very informative. Loved all the fantastic information and the 4 buckets/categories. Thank you for putting together.
I'm glad you enjoyed and found it helpful!
11:51 "It's gonna be so bad..." - it was great ^^ And thank you :) I hope I won't run out of time before I reach similar point in life...
I’ve never been interested in planes like this. But I watched the video anyway to burn some time. I’m glad I did. It’s a good introduction that builds my interest. Thanks for the low down on a nice high flyer.
I follow a lot of aviators on KZhead. I must say, this is the best overall video I've seen in a long time! Full of great information and you made it hilarious as well. Great job sir!
Hey thanks so much for saying so! Glad it was helpful.
Yeah, you're done kind of expert.
I can't agree more. It's the capability of present well-organized information in a concise way, on top of sharing the fun with other pilots.
Great overview of the aircraft. Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really, really great informative video! Thank you for all your hard work! Happy thanksgiving!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Love your videos. It’s very nice to listen to you to talk, your knowledge is impressive
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that.
I love the TBM. Congrats on this beauty. Great video. I hope one day I will be able to own one of these beauty. Enjoy and be safe.
I enjoyed your video. I'm the son of a pilot so when other kids went camping with their dad I was going to Osh Kosh, or visiting military bases or flying in small planes. My dad is a former Navy pilot flying C-130s with skids and jato jets in Antarctica. He also flew P-3 Orion sub hunter planes. He's a retired B777 captain and line check airman flying ORD to China. And I've flown with him in his Cessna 172 from Chicago to Austin and Daytona Beach. I always immediately connect with people that have a passion for flying. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to experience the joy of aviation.
Loved your video's intro! It cracked me up and got my attention instantly! ;)
Good to know thanks!
The simplicity and honesty in the way it is presented is captivating. Nice job
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
Thank you for sharing.
Excellent video, great summary.
...such a great beautiful powerful plane...thanks for sharing...
Thanks for watching!
What an amazing and well spoke person you are inspired me
Thank you! That's actually my dad - haha! :)
Awesome aircraft and great information. I'm not a pilot but I find these videos very informational to know what one goes thru to fly something like this efficiently and safely. Thank you for posting this one. Enjoy your time in the air with that beautiful beast! She's a doosey alright! Beautiful aircraft!
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy the videos and the channel.
Great video & your ‘take home’ points were beautifully balanced 😊👍🏻 All flying is good flying!
Thanks so much!! Appreciate the feedback and glad you enjoyed the video.
Very, very good information and advice.
Upgrading from my Cirrus to a TBM. Found this video very insightful.
Awesome! Congratulations!!
The cuts where you showed a TV band signal was awesome. Very informative, very fun, well-made video. You're a natural. Plus, you come off as humble, with the ability to laugh at yourself. Its also obvious that you're probably pretty funny and fun to be around. lol. Again, just a good video. (hats off).
Haha thanks so much! Can't take yourself TOO seriously. This is KZhead, after all.
I agree, your candor and humor made me laugh and thoroughly enjoyed your video. What do you use the TBM for?
Great job well explained
It's videos like these ... Where I learn! I am a FS arm-Chair pilot, but DAMN! You give me more info than anyone! I am sharing your channel, and THANK YOU! For all your info, you share, "May your next landing, be you your best"!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate this! Glad you found it helpful.
Thanks for your interesting comments sir. Cheers from the French alps 👋
Great vid, and loved the bloopers 😂👍
Great video, well presented, informative, thanks!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.
What a gorgeous airplane. I'm still looking forward to getting my float plane rating!
Great video! Man that TBM looks awesome!!! 👍
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
Great video that covered my 2 favorite private aircraft topics- the TBM and float planes. Would love some inside baseball on the cost and procedures to get into float planes, either on a commercial or hobby basis.
Good idea, that's worth a video. The seaplane rating is SO much fun.
It is indeed a beast! I love it how you left all the takes! 😂👍
Hah thanks! I figured I'd leave some of them in there for fun :)
@@AirplaneAcademy - Some?!
Fantastic video. Thank you very much!
Sure thing, glad you enjoyed!
Love the snout and propeller on that bird.
Very good informative, fresh, (down to earth :-) video. Liked it. Well done!!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Great video on this amazing aircraft. Thanks for sharing and safe skies always !
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.
Very cool airplane! Thanks for doing this video, you did fine.
Thanks for watching!
I am not part of the aviation industry in any way and I know very little about planes, but I must say the TBM is a fascinating aircraft. It looks so good! It has a really appealing look to me. It must be a joy to own and operate.
I appreciate this video as it teaches you about actually using the airplane
Thank you!
Thanks for this fun video!
Sure thing!
Thanks for the info it was very good super good 👍
Great video and information - thanks
Sure thing! Glad you enjoyed!
I appreciated this content. Thanks
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed.
That is one hell of a plane!
The TBM 930 is a great ride! steveo1kinevo is another TBM channel worth a watch. Your video was great to explain the check-out process. Gives a very clear idea of what to expect in terms of training.... Well the cost, that's the hard part, but I guess if you can afford the TBM you can afford the training! Thank you.
Thank you!
my son grew up with puters--learned to fly at 14(glider),solo the 150 at 16--flew hi performance aircraft, helicopters including turbine- his transition was a breeze--damn young dudes!!!
your living the dream i wish i could fly such a beautiful plane or any plane
Well done!
Thank you!
I really like your Videos. You have hit on some of the biggest questions that we have when considering whether to continue to rent an airplane or to buy one. I was really seriously considering buying an airplane and now I'm even more serious about that concept. Your video has shown me that this is a doable thing, as well as that when my mission changes I realize I can still just rent the bigger plane rather than owning it. Also your videos gave me more useful information than some of the other things. For example, some pilots talk about the cost of an airplane per hour of flight time. The problem that I have with that is: first, my flight time per year is probably not the same as theirs. Second, I can't reasonably anticipate how much that's going to be in any given year. But, based on what you have given, I can see a budget clearly. Thanks again for posting.
Thanks for your comment and I am happy you found this useful! Makes me glad.
Thank you so much for your great KZhead video's I'm Col Casey Bronson in East Tennessee a disabled Vietnam veteran! I just turned 72 years old last month July 27th, Sir! I've had a private pilots license sense I was 17 got it no one could love aircraft more than myself I just wanted to say I've dreamed of flying in a plane like the piper you now have? Sorry I have got to go the doctors I'll try to get back to you later I didn't look after the time? Do to being disabled I lost track of the time? Anyway god bless you and congrads on my dream plane, also may you fly many more hours and smiles! Thank you for yr videos. 😄✌️
Actually sir the airplane is not Piper but Socata, SOCATA (later EADS Socata and DAHER-SOCATA
THANK YOU for your service. Honored to have you as a viewer. East Tennessee is a beautiful part of the country. I've been to Knoxville several times and always loved it.
Cool that you left in some out takes..👍
Enjoyed that. I’ve subscribed.👍
Awesome! Pumped to have you subscribe. Thank you!
What a great video keep it up.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.
Very nice. Plane and video! Few people can afford a bird this level. But this kind of video help ordinary people to "feel inside".
Thank you!
I’ve put a great deal of thought into this, and if I ever win the lottery, this is the plane I’m going to buy.
I love the lines of a TBM. It would be nice to be able to afford one (and maintain it).
Are these typically flown by the owner, or by a hired PIC whereas the owner is some sort of fat-cat executive sitting as a PAX? Clearly a professional pilot doesn't make anywhere nearly enough to own one of these for personal use. And a millionaire executive who goes through all the loops to get the ratings to fly this... probably happens, but as more of an oddball? I wonder if Elon Musk holds some level pilot license, that would suit him well. But other billys - not so much... I doubt even Elon is PICing his Gulfstream-G650 ER though. At least not officially :-D
I absolutely LOVE the TBM, but being realistic, I’m more in the Cirrus category. Beautiful airplane and happy for the people that can afford them and enjoy them. Safe flying to all
I love the TBM too, but being realistic, I'm more in the 1990's civic category
I'm to old to fly. But not on FS2020. I am learning a lot from you guys showing real time what I may be able to do in a sim environment...thanks
Thanks! Super excited they're bringing this back. It looks incredible.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Best Intro. Liked.
Well done sir.
Thank you!
that was a good talk, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A&P Mechanic here. I cannot find ONE single misstatement in this video. VERY GOOD!
Awesome! Thanks for this feedback. I'll pass onto my Dad.
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Great video 👍🏻🇬🇧
Great Fun Video, You are a Natural !!
Thank you!
What a great video I thought going into my piper Malibu was difficult.
Thank you!
very professional dance around the actual expense...
Agree with that last comment. That’s a cool guy. I will never fly a plane like this, but I sure enjoyed the video.
Glad that you enjoyed!
Goodness, this is almost like flying a jet. Some serious power.
I have had 2 Lancair 4P with Walther turbines 724 max hp. Transition was from a piston 4P. I had no turbine training, and no problems. My turbines few at 300 and 310 kts FL 260 and apx 35 gph. I was with a friend, John Cook from Deland FL one winter night, and we were doing 340 kts TAS. Initial climb 4000 fpm. The 4P is a spectacular aircraft that got bad press from accidents that were mostly pilot error. You also need heavy right rudder on takeoff. The piston 4P almost as fast with far less fuel burn. Great plane. Too bad it ended up out of production.
Awesome plane.
Great video.
Thank you!
Dream hangar right there
Isn’t this around 5 million new? This is on another level.
940 is $4.4M, 910 is $4M
5 million Indian rupee, I hope 😅😅😅😅
my favorite plane on MSFS2020 👍
Can we clarify how you jumped from a Barron to a 3.5 million dollar 930? I feel like that is a very understated comment. lol
Here i am looking for 30k musketeer...
Drugs
Yes his mom died. Don't crucify me im just joking. I experienced that many years ago. Some people buy there dreams and some work for there dreams. When's this guy going to get a job and move out of dad's basement. Instead of a simulator go to the jim 😂
Bragging rights. Well to awnser from a Barron to a 3.5 his grandma or wife died. I don't want to be upsetting. Its the simple truth. Remember Jack Nicholson can you handle the truth. Rate's with make my day 😂 I have seen these types my hole life. Its called old money. I know. Insurance policy? Who knows? None of my business. But when you go to public media it becomes my business.... Quite bragging, get it. O by the way does it have power? I don't think you mentioned it... At least i didn't here it. Im glad you accomplished your dream. This was not useful knowledge. Its bragging. Wave your azz in your wifes face. Sure that will go over large(GET IT)
@@stevestawasz5473 The fuck are talking about?
What Beauty!!
I'll have to settle for flying this in Flight Simulator! Thanks for the video.
I'm really excited they are bringing MS FS back... I played it all the time growing up.
@@AirplaneAcademy Yes I've really missed it, can't wait to fly the 930 it's like Koenigsegg had a go at making a Cessna.
@@AirplaneAcademy Just bear in mind you need a fairly good computer :)
I've been flying this plane on MS Flight Sim 2020. What a treat to fly this plane. Landing it can be tricky but so far its been a blast.
Oh I wish I could.. I would be happy just to take a ride in...
Excellent video and funny too.
Thanks!
My dream aircraft. I will have one someday.
Sure you can’t have a $100 hamburger. But you can certainly go for the $3000 hamburger version! LOL
Do your homework, Dakota - I did the math, and it would only be $2,600... geez.
@@gilbertfranklin1537 America's educational system is failing miserably! 🤣
Well these things are not to fly alone. Gotta bring pax with ya to split the bill.
$240 / hour in just fuel costs... operating cost per hour ballpark is usually x2 the fuel cost, so $500 / hour. IDK what you gotta be doing for a living to fly hamburger trips in this bird all by yourself :-D I think these are more in the business jet category of useage, than private aviation?
great vid!
Thank you!
Thanks for your time to explain the charastic of how a Turbo-Prop Aircraft operates. Can you share your Turbo-Prop instructor??
Nice Hangar buddy.
Nice overview.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed.
Just bought this plane for £109 on Microsoft store. Thanks for explaining it.
The best one that I would love to fly that you have is the Super Cub on Those 29 tundras
and natural in front of Camara guy super funny and very interesting
That's a beautiful, impressive aircraft you have. Make mine red! If I win a Lotto- I'm buying a P-38 Lightning.
Red would be awesome!
A question to all experienced pilots: would you like an automatic right-rudder application mode for an aircraft like this? It's relatively easy to digitally compute the right rudder force based on engine RPM, manifold pressure, airspeed and/or AoA - and apply 80-90% of it. After which the pilot would need to add maybe the last 10-20% (Pilots are used to applying RIGHT rudder so it's best to undercorrect by 20% than overcorrect by 10% requiring the pilot to apply LEFT rudder which many single-engine pilots would find unnatural and confusing). Of course, any such hydraulic or pneumatic "right-rudder-helper" would come with a quick "kill-switch", which would disable it instantly and revert to fully manual rudder control. I also get the aversion to all kinds of automation and computer intervention when in comes to flight control itself.
What you are suggesting already exists. It’s called rudder trim. No electronics, hydraulics or anything complicated. It is an adjustable tab on the rudder that uses airstream preassure to push the rudder in the direction and amount that the pilot requires. Same idea as elevator trim. A large high performance plane like the TBM is equipped with trim on all three axes, pitch, roll and yaw.
