Jetlike Evolution Is A Speed Machine On A Budget

By far one of my personal favorite aircraft design. The Lancair evolution is truly an aircraft with exquisite performance and pracality. This is an airplane that will carry 4 grown adults with full tanks and fly the distance. You can bet you will also be getting to you destination quickly.
The evolution climbs at 4,000 ft a minute and you can bet on a cruise speed of 290 kt to 300 kt. At 28,000 ft you will be burning only 36 gallons of fuel per hour. That is the most economical I've seen for for a turbine engine going 300 kts.
Right now you can build a new evolution aircraft at JMB facility in Europe.

We’ve owned ours since 2018 and all I can say is I’m in love with it. It’s a winged greyhound that is fast and efficient that gets you cross country fast and in comfort. Basically it’s a 4 seat airliner. At cruise altitude with its 18:1 glide ratio you are within glide range of an airport in the continental U.S. What else can make that claim? I moved up from a Cessna Turbo Cardinal RG which I flew for 20 years prior and the transition was pretty manageable. I fly ours about 150 hrs a year (mostly for business) and feel very comfortable with it. Operating costs too are quite reasonable. Now the down side: This is serious transportation where you’re mixing it up with the bigger iron up in the flight levels. Things happen faster than in lower and slower piston platforms and the avionics/automation (G1000/GFC700) has a fairly steep learning curve at least it was for me. If you aren’t proficient with it or get behind the plane you can get into trouble fast. This is not your casual Sunday go around the patch plane. This is a fast serious XC transportation that requires proficiency, good habits, experience and the discipline to use and fly by checklists. If you’re not committed to learning it’s systems, getting good transition & recurrent training (David Robinson at Elite Pilot Services) and fly it enough to stay proficient then the Evo isn’t for you.
Thanks.. I had about 1000 hours in Cirrus in 2017. I almost put a deposit down to do my own build in Oregon if I remember correctly. Lancair sent a demo pilot in one to Chicago for me to try. I was super impressed, but again, there was a Jet A smell in the cabin. I also flew to Saint Louis to test fly a used 2011 I believe, same thing. I read on the LOBO forums that the Jet A thing in the cabin was related to the extended range tanks. Right around that time there was the windshield incident and the fatal in Mesa Arizona and I passed. I think the insurance was going to be pretty high also. Austin Meyer built one (with the PT-6-42 powerplant) and his website has a ton of useful info on his experience with it.
@@DefenseCriminal we have the extended tank in the back as well. When we purchased ours it didn’t have the Aux tank and given our extended range mission (non-stop from Minneapolis to LA) we had it added. Upon return to service testing, a JetA smell was noted in the cabin and upon investigation a small leak around the new aux fuel pump under the rear pax floorboard was found. It was promptly fixed. No smell ever since. Perfectly fine. So the one you tested sounds like it had an open squawk like ours and should have been sent back to maintenance for investigation and correction.
How does insurance cost for it look and how many hours do you have
What’s the icing system like? I only saw prop heat. Alcohol/gel ?
they should dumb down the computers so there is no learning curve. a learning curve is indicative of a failed product user experience. things can be explained when needed in the software and even on the plane.
No such thing as a plane on a 'budget', either you are rich enough not to care about the price, or you can't afford it.
This. I had to literally LOL when he said he was seriously considering it…
If i had 100 mil cash i would still care about the price......its about getting a good deal!!!!and when you made your own money trust me you care!!!! especially if its not a necessity like for me.....for me the plane is a passion....i can live without it but i want it.I do around 50-60 hours a year maximum 80-90.But when the covid restrictions were on was i happy:))) i could go wherever i wanted and there were no people:))) best year ever:)))
Sure the first 3-4 years i was doing ,200-250 hours a year but you get bored just like with a car:)))

The Evolution is definitely an awesome plane.
Love the enthusiasm!
Shoot! I should have looked for you there! This is a great plane!
good video, Sir. Keep them coming.
Thank you for the details such a wonderful bird
Nice speed with excellent work as well.
Another great video Mike. Thanks
Beautiful.
Excellent vid Mike. A great kite indeed.
It’s that sweet spot of price performance and efficiency
Beautiful plane 🛬 ty big mike! Still the best aviation channel 😀
😎👍 High speed, low drag.
Wow, what an airplane good job and thanks for the tour ?
Sick airplane
They are built 10 miles from my house; this is one pretty speed machine
Thanks...... Great Fast airplane!!!!
Beautiful! All I can ever do is dream to fly a plane like this one! As close as I can come is flying the Evolution in my X-plane simmer 🤑
U n me both !!! Thank god for PC sims!
That is a Sleek and Beautiful Plane, Looks Super Fast just sitting there!
Love the Pratt and Whitney turbine engines, a great reliable engine. This plane rocks and so do you Mike!! Good seeing you there right after you completed your video. Thanks for the picture!Allan from Canada 👍🏻
Nice plane, good video description.
Cool plane, well done my friend. I want one.
That’s a definitely a beautiful airplane
It's a sweet design
Hey Mojo, thanks for the cool video. I have been a Cirus Vision fan ... ut it looks like I am switching teams !! CHEERS Dark Arrow was a thought for a bit ..
It is a beautiful aircraft
Sweet whip
Awesoness
Mike, your excitement is off the charts in this video! Does JMB have a presence in the US, or did everything move to Europe? 😃
Pure guess : why get import tax on a product that is mainly sold in the U.S and can be made in the U.S too ? Nothing is going to move. Maybe one more assembly line in Europe because JMB already has the facility there but that's it. The good thing is JMB knows its stuff, their vl3 lsa is a great success...very much inspired from the Lancair.
No import taxes, it’s built with JMB factory assist at their facility in Czech. This partnership is the best thing that’s happened to Evolution since it was just a design on paper. I couldn’t be more excited or confident about this new direction. Stay tuned!!
Love your enthusiasm. Keep it up! I’m curios as to why you didn’t say anything about the LX7 that was developed to correct some of the flaws in the Evolution and previous versions of the Lancair IV.
Nice Video, nice aircraft! What do you think about the LX7 Piston/LX7 Turboprop?
I absolutely love your videos! You're definitely one of the very best ones out there doing it! Thank you for them. Keep them coming!!!!
amazing bird,,, think they even have a vl3 2 seat turbine :))
Have you had the chance to fly one yet? Nice looking plane!!
Hi Mike, could you tell me, you made a video of Lancair Mako and Lancair LX7 in the past years. Can you tell me, the cabin area of these aircrafts, especially in rear seats are the same as in evolution aircraft? It seems to me that evolution aircraft is a little bit bigger than Lancair!
Man that makes me want some mini thins now 😂
This is the ideal airplane for MojoGrip. This is the one he should be flying. Fly to KWVI and lunch is my treat.
what is needed for these to go just under 1000 kmh? do you just need more power and swept wings?
I was going to build or buy one before Lancair went out of business. I demo’d 3 of them. All 3 had the smell of jet A in the cabin. There is good info on the LOBO forum. If they have the extended range fuel tanks you get Jet A fumes in the cabin
Not true. I own one ( N13PF) that has the auxiliary tank in the back and we have no smell whatsoever. And I fly her a lot. Nothing better out there.
@@blaze6655 0:35 You own one and never heard of this issue? Was it something that has been rectified? I’m not making this up
Vision Jet allday 😄
The big piston is nice too . Or the small turbine Good range . I bet that 67 is insane though
Hopefully JMB can revitalize the plane. I know they are working hard at it, but still much to be done. Insurance costs will be a big issue until they can get more flight hours logged.
Some cockpit with that turbine?
Poor Mojo! Still at Sun N Fun! ;). I LOVE this plane too!!! Talk about super high performance! But, does it come with a 'parachute'? :p It is deceptively roomy...
Yes sir, all the new Evo’s will come standard with BRS parachute and deice boots.
l built an test flew first lancair 320 in nc kfay 93'-96'. With my friend.
Nice toy !
Any storage area?
I too love the original Evolution. I do not love how expensive it is to build and operate. “On a budget” is relative.
We have the same taste. I think every plane you've showcased I love it too! LOL And now, this one is added to the list. I love TBM's. But, this would be a great plane to have to me. I hope it's added into MSFS 2024. I'm 6'0" and the backseat does concern me. I would have to hope that the pilot and/or co-pilot are shorter than me. Heh Oh wait, I'll be the pilot! Nevermind.
I own one and there is a ton of room in the back as Mike states. I’m 6’0” 220lbs and I’m comfortable sitting back there. It’s a legitimate 4 adult pax plane plus a decent amount of storage in the back.
This one is not in the beholder it's just dead sexy.
I have owned and flown both the -135 and the -42 versions. I prefer the -42 powerplant.
In a climb to FL280 the -42 is able to maintain a higher rate of climb all the way up....
What do you do for a living? I'd love to be able to at some point
We have the -135A and I tend to agree. At FL280 the -135A is working pretty hard to maintain 270+KTAS. The -42 however is not working nearly as hard on about the same fuel burn at that altitude. The bottom line is the -42 will last longer and be less costly to maintain.
@@blaze6655 The best explanation I have heard for that fact is that the -42 has two power turbine wheels versus 1 for the -135 and therefore get more of the energy out of the gas flow
🎉🎉🎉 ACTUALLY ANOTHER GOLDEN VICTORY IN AVIATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND BEYOND. IZAZ RASOOL MOHAN BARIDHARA GULSHAN DHAKA BANGLADESH.
On a "budget"? A budget of several million bucks, plus YOU have to build it yourself, it's a KIT.
Correct me please, but at that altitude… does it have de icing wings?
Yes it does. not certified but it does have deicing equipment.
After the actual cost, plus paying for the certs to bring you up to speed to even consider flying a high performance aircraft, this is NOT a budget airplane at all! At least not for common folk! Let’s keep it in reality Mojo! But, I absolutely support your purchase of one! 👍🏽💯
uau!!
Hey Mike what about the LX7? That plane has a turboprop and it’s just as fast and costs way less. Can you talk about it or make another video on the LX7? It would be nice to see you fly both piston and turbo prop versions.
Actually it doesn’t cost less, and it’s not in the same ballpark as the Evo. From cabin size to the refinement of the plane, they are worlds apart.
@@DavidRobinson-zm8cf according to RDD the company in Oregon who makes the LX7 is does cost less. I know its a bit smaller. But it holds 4 people and some bagage. It is fast as well. They offer 3 or 4 turbo prop engine choices or you can go with a 350hp turbocharged Lycoming piston engine. The LX7 is an amazing plane. Ithink its faster as well. There are many videos of it in youtube. Including one that Mike did a few years back.
Needs a RED V12 engine!
Nice video, I still prefer the pc12 😅.
Hooray you did a video from the back seat its got the lenght just a lil narrow, the next best value is the Velocity at 250kts or DA50 albeit slower. Thanks 🙌
Can it come with de ice boots or bleed air?
It comes with a parachute and deice standard
Do you just like MARPAT, or were you in the Marines??
When you see the spec sheet, the Vne (never exceed speed) is 474km/h but cruise speed is 555 km/h. Error perhaps?
Vne is KIAS (indicated airspeed) vs. Cruise speed which is KTAS (True Airspeed)
Id love to see this aircraft with a single seat or a tandem seat configuration. Make it more like a fighter than a family aircraft.
Mike Patey’s Turbulence did it.
@@gingrasj link?
Budget ?
Does this plane have FIKI?
Is it Fiki? If not I could see getting into A lot of trouble in a hurry
There are options to put boots on it or thermal deice. That said the best ice protection is its ability to fly high over almost all icing layers and its then its ability to quickly transit up and down thru the icing layers due to its phenomenal climb and decent rates. We fly ours out of Minneapolis and icing layers here are a fact of life.
What about air taxis and why aren’t these equipped with radio or television for entertainment like a land vehicle even comfort ?
The issue is actually buying this thing, I'm spoken to the factory and they haven't even delivered their first one yet, they seem very excited by their VL3 and I wonder how committed they are long term to actually making these, I would love to buy this but I'm concerned about long term viability given their current focus being elsewhere. Did you get a chance to ask them about this at the event?
3 in production as we speak. JMB is ramping up production. It’s not an overnight thing.
@@blaze6655 complete agree they told me they will be out next year.
The fact that their demo aircraft is 12 years old tells me everything I need to know about the health of that company. Sorry I’m not spending turbo prop money on a garage built aircraft put together on a shoe string budget.
Cause ya can’t afford it
@@gingrasj Is that why your grammar is so bad because you couldn’t afford to go to school?
So some one bought the rights to the old Lancair Evolution. It has way under designed front landing gear. It was a kit build with Factory help at Lancair. Not sure how many they made before Lancair went under.
Lancair didn’t go under. And the same owner still owns Evolution Aircraft Company, but they broke apart and sold off all the Lancair assets to focus solely on the Evo. They have partnered with JMB Aircraft
As for any Nose-gear issues, those were all resolved years ago! We haven’t seen any issues like that for a long time. Happy to discuss all this with you, reach out if you have questions.
@@DavidRobinson-zm8cf How about de-icing? Heard it was going to be electric. Can the latest Garmin systems be installed? Electrical/digital fuses? Smart oxygen? I hope JMB modernizes this platform and wipe the floor against competitors.
Young Mans / Test Pilot’s Airplane 🤣 Right it is fast looking 👏👏👏
Isnt this a JMB Evolution, and not a Lancair Evolution like you mentioned?
JMB made an agreement with Lancair in 2022 to start manufacturing the Evolution going forward
The Tbm is a Ford F-150 compared to this sleek sporty rocket.
Early on I saw this plane and fell in love with it. Beautiful and with a turbine up front, fast, fast, fast....unfortunately, it is expensive, expensive, expensive🥵
Thanks!
That thing is sexy. Looks like 500 kts sitting still.
It's cruise speed is 300kts at altitude. I'm surprised it's max indicated airspeed is just 256kts. It looks like it would have a higher VNE than that. My Glasair 3's VNE is 291kts. But look at what those 3s did in Reno. Way over that. And with pumped up piston power.
Seriously considering? You have 4 million just kicking around?
Plenty of people have that money available especially if you’re using it for a business.
Many have it, most do not.
I love it! But at that price, I’d rather have a TBM for more space, in spite of the fuel burn.
mans said "3 storey building." He is 100% naija. IYKYK
When you said ‘on a budget’ you meant a pretty big budget, right! 😂 Seriously though, it is a stunning aircraft
lol I meant on a budget for jet speak
The cost of maintain your authority to fly a turbine is never mentioned in videos about these type of aircraft
It’s the same as your piston airplane. It’s an airplane, single-engine land. Insurance requires you to get annual recurrent training with an authorized instructor, which is usually a 1/2 day of training once a year.
🆒😎🤘!
How hard is it to insure it? 🤔
Yes, this aircraft is quite high performance. One of my favorites in the X-Plane 12 flight sim. (ツ) ☕☕(ツ)
"... on a budget." Wish I had the "budget" to afford one of these.
Yea, a little more space, not much if any more useful load and about the same speed albeit at a third more fuel burn. You get all that for 3x the price of an Evo. I’ll stay with my Evo all day long.
On a budget? Well, I guess it’s all relative.
💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎
a)what about insurance, or the lack there of. b) ice protection on the wings, there is none. for a plane dsigned for the FL no FIKI is a deal breaker.
Yea sure, all insurance companies want to know if your IFR, got 10,000 HOURS, before even wasting time with the riffraff who dream.
This is an Experimental airplane with no support/it has a lot of problems / I have one
Rich guys fun! Working people need not apply.
Wait, how can max cruise be 300 but Vne is 256??
True Airspeed vs. Indicated Airspeed. Cruise was shown as True, Vne was Indicated.
@@djquick so at 28,000 ft and 300kts true airspeed, the indicated airspeed will be less 256kts?
@@thomasloper1205 yes.
At 28000 feet on a standard day indicated airspeed of 190kts will result in 300kts true airspeed.
I get the idea, it just doesn't work in practice at 1.7million dollars. It probably has exotic climb but it's only marginally faster than the piston Lancair IV-P at 1/6 the price and half the fuel burn and a tiny fraction of the service cost. A turboprop is the worst of both worlds. Jet price at piston speed and piston noise and looks. if turboprops were somehow reasonably priced and jet engines were not then maybe, theoretically. but they really really are not. You can get an Eclipse for less, it's far more roomy, 30% faster and might even match the fuel economy if it can fly that slow. What JMB should do is make the turbofan engines for a light pressurized 4 seater. That has potential. P&W's 1 million dollar bs doesn't fly.
So much false and incorrect with your post. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.
@@blaze6655 you didn't point out a single mistake.
You should state that it's a kit plane and now out of business! C'mon Man!
on a budget… 1.7 mil 😢
Got IFR and 10,000 hours? Then forget it, you’re not getting insurance. They don’t want losers.
This is simply not true. Getting insurance isn’t an issue. Even less than 1,000 hrs total time is getting written.
Great airplane until the windshield fails at FL 270. Try to get insurance on this platform.
Wonder if that has been fixed though, and not lingering in dinosaur insurance documents.
The issue was identified on the range of serial numbers affected and corrected.
