How to polish paint (for beginners!): choosing your pad for the shiniest paint
In this video, we demonstrate how pad choice can greatly impact the finish on your automotive paint. With the DIY Detail polishing system, we offer three pads and one liquid polish -- Gold Standard Polish. You have the choice of our wool cutting pad, our yellow waffle pad and our red jeweling pad.
So which one do you choose, and why?
The process of pad choice actually begins BEFORE that; proper paint polishing is all about the prep. We need a clean surface to really determine what's happening on paint.
That's why we spend so much time in this video demonstrating a proper wash and decontamination.

I've never seen a site sold out of almost everything they carry. This stuff must really be gold!
Thanks, we are moving to a larger and faster warehouse . This move means we have some shortages.
They are killing it. I just got to use a few of their products I bought a couple of months back on one of my motorcycles and on my Wife's 2022 Infiniti QX60. The incredible suds, iron remover/ decon towel and polish/pad worked great! No dusting and it was by far the easiest as far as effort to results I've used. Great stuff!!
@@audionutmike it would be great if you could get it too. lol
Again - you make it look like anyone can do this. You tell everyone that they can do this. You show everyone how to do it. You don’t just sell product - you teach and educate about the product and the process. One of a kind channel - my one stop shop for all my auto detailing education and product!
Thank you.
AWESOME video! Very educational. Especially for us mobile detail entrepreneurs who are always hungry to learn the correct and efficient ways to detail cars! Always enjoy all the KZhead videos you both put out. Watching doesn't make everyone a professional. Gotta put in the work to gain proficiency and skills lol Thank you Yvan, Nick!!!
Thank you.
Refreshing information guys. ie. Damping pads, washing pads instead of buying more,NO pressure polishing. Wiping down with damp towel b4 dry one to finish And much more. The simple things make the most difference. Brilliant
Thanks, happy to help
I was sent to this video by your customer service. Very informative and helpful. I’m going to wet sand my brand new paint job and use the wool pad then red pad with the gold standard polish. I feel more comfortable with finishing my car. My paint job was flow coated & has minimal orange peel. Thank you for your help and incredible customer service.
Glad it was helpful!
The DIY team did it again very instructive video thank you guys . Bravo !
Thank you.
Great video guys, i look forward to trying your products this year
Please do! Let us know how you like them
Awesome video guys. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Youre guyses production quality has been going up, which i really appreciate, keep it up
Thanks, will do!
Great video and informative, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Never knew to polish with a damp pad. Learned something new
we're always learning as well, that's what makes detailing so fun
Looking forward to this 💪🏼💪🏼👍🏻👍🏻
See you soon 👍
A test hood never disappoints 😂 Wating for the next one!
Thank you.
These guys are giving yall all the GAME !!! / JEWELS 💎 !! master detailer here btw !! 🔥 🔥
Thank you.
That Grants Detail Seat is awesome and a great deal from Harbor Freight...it has saved my feet and back while doing tires and lower quarter panels!
Thanks for the info!
Great stuff 😍
Thanks 😁
Another solid video!
Appreciate it!
Appreciate that!
great job team!
Thank you!
@diydetail I tried the 5x5x5 process to get rid of some deeper scratches. It worked great.
Thank you.
Very interesting video. I’m a detailing enthusiast…I’ve never machine polished a vehicle but considering it. Side note: the video froze in several places for 5 or more seconds.
Thanks for the info!
Yes, I found that too.. In a couple of key areas also, but it was a great video. Looking forward to the rotary one
Let's not overlook the fact, and it bears repeating, this was all done with 1 polish! 99% of the time Gold Standard Polish is all you need!
Lol not in my world. That wouldnt even be used at my shop.
Thanks
😂😂😂 Their products are garbage
Sorry you feel that way.
@@AndySantiago-yd5lhapparently you’ve never used Rinseless Wash, it’s freaking amazing!
I ended up ordering the DA as well 😅 thanks for getting them out I’ll definitely share some feedback on them once they get here on the 21st thanks Yvan and Nick
Thank you
I am glad to see you guys actual "Automotive Tape" and not painters paint. I see alit of detailers even the ones on You tubr use regular Blue painters taoe. What people dont realize is that painters tape can actualy damge or even take off your clear coat. Do people when you do polish your car and need tonuse tape to section off panels or areas, use AUTOMOTIVE specific tape. Thanks for maming this video guy's!!!
Thank you.
Just what I need!! Notification ON
Hope you enjoy!
Great video! Thanks to Ivan's suggestion, I have purchased an orbital sander to polish my car versus getting an expensive polisher.
Thank you.
! ! ! AWESOME ! ! ! Many Thanks !
Thank you too!
This update was a “jewel” to watch. I also want to throw in a thanks for the last part on where a simple hand orbit polisher fits in. I was always curious if one was of any use at all (I have one) or just a training wheels for noobies thinking about a paint correction but wanting a safe try. Question answered.
Thank you.
Once again great job!!! You guys were reading my mind. I was thinking about the results of using the rotary. Can't wait for that video!!! Thanks
Our pleasure!
This was a great great video on the da using all the pads. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 thank you for that answer all my questions on the all pad use. You guys are the best 🙏 what speed did you use on the red pad with the da?
Speed 2
I’ve used tree sap remover on tar. Goo gone taken to the next level safely. 👍🏻
Good to know!
Used your tree sap remover to remove tar on a white suv. Does great.
Yes , Sap, Adhesive, Tar, and burnout evidence.
Gunna be good!💯💪🏼
Thank you.
Another great video Nick. What ratio do you usually use to make a pre-wash with All Clean and Incredible Suds?
120oz Water, 8oz DIY Detail All Clean , 1/2 oz DIY Detail Incredible Suds
Awesome video!! Maybe add the gloss meter in next one.
Good idea!
@@diydetailofficial tnx for the demos!
Hello guys, love the channel. Keep up the good work!! A little off topic but I would love to see a video on how to properly use the Marolex Axel FOAMER 2000. I see videos on unboxing, but nothing that shows you the proper way of using the different tips and more importantly, the delusion to get the right foam. (hope this makes sense). I purchased one and for the life of me I cannot get any foam and I have tried several soaps and delusions. ARGHHH
We don’t have one, but I believe Pan the Organizer has a tutorial
Great video, was wondering what they have put the bonnet on to keep it so stable thanks
A carpenters work table
great video, and super easy enstructions to follow... What polisher you recomend for a begginer and"weekend worrior"
A rotary
Love y'alls videos. But when will y'all have products back in stock to purchase?
This week our new warehouse will be fully online.
Love the work you guys carry out! Have some questions for gentlemen. If used on unprotected surface, is rinseless wash okay? And can quick bead or ceramic gloss be applied to non coated car as a standalone?
Yes and yes
Great content as always, can you guys put a link to buy the garden hose nozzle used in this video, thanks.
Unfortunately we only know it was purchased from home depot
Great information! Can you guys please do a video on polishing cars with vinyl racing stripes. I have a new c8 vette with factory racing stripes that I need to polish before ceramic coating.
We have several videos of vehicles with stripes. If they are gloss, polish them like the paint, if they are matte, do not polish them
Excellent video guys...I watch a lot of your videos and this is one that may will appreciate. Would also be nice if you do a video to remove a scratch that is not too deep but visible and catch your eye everytime!!! FYI...there were issues with your video today (break in action and sound at 3-4 occasions). Tks
Yes technical difficulties
Great video! What should the speed setting be on the DA when using the red pad?
2-3
I did the 5 year diy ceramic coating on my brand new lexus rx450h+ this weekend. The coating went on awesome. Didnt fight me at all after about a half hr the car was so slick. It feels so smooth now. I moved the car around onto diff light for so long and looked for high spots. Today i found one hugh spit i missed in a weird bend on the trunk door. Its barely noticiable but now i see it. Is the only way to correct this to gold standard polish it out then reapply?
Lightly polish by hand on a MF towel
Good afternoon! @DIY DETAIL a suggestion for a product that you can add to your line, maybe a quimical eliminator for after you clean the carpets with all clean, risless wash or interior cleaner an protect.
Great suggestion!
My go to video at night to get to sleep within 5 to 10 mins… listening to these guys will put you to sleep fast
Thank you.
Hope to see 3” jeweling pads in stock at some point.
They are on the way
good info! i do believe, at least when you reach 100.00 subscribers, invest in a harbor freight inspection light to actually show, cause it's a video, the work being done on the paint. I know it's easy to say but I've seen it on many channels
Our inspection light was somewhere in a storage container
Ivan I just bought a new 2024 White Maverick. 25miles.After wash and decon, which pad should I use for polishing, red or the yellow one ?
Red should be all you need
It definitely can’t be overlooked at how well the gold standard polish works. If I’ve got a persistent scratch I’ll go with adding a spot of a cutting compound (3D 500) to the 1 spray of gold standard polish. Scratch is diminished with minimal work.
Nice
70.000 subscribers!
Yeah!!
Dudes . . . nice background!
Glad you like it!
Question: I just installed PPF on front half of Tesla model one. Do I need to Decon and polish PPF prior to installing ceramic coating?
Or should I install ceramic coating on top of the PPF at all?
You can lightly polish it, and yes you want to coat it.
hey! my polisher has broken, got a cheap black and decker palm sander. my question is, the palm sander seems to spin quit fast would this be bad for the clear coat. this is refering to how fast it spins without any load. dont really want to try it and mess up thr paint it spins about 12 000 rpm without load
Start and stop it on the paint. 12,000 OPM is normal.
I have a 2007 silver opel corsa. I thought about machine polishing myself but the clear coat is starting to peel in places so not sure it's really worth bothering now. I suppose it would atleast be a good car to practice on. Any advice would be most appreciated!
Unfortunately failing clear coat is something not good to polish.
Thanks for the video guys. Hey Yvan, looks like I'll get to say hello at the meet and greet event in Melbourne in a few weeks time. Are you bringing any rotaries over with you? :)
Unfortunately no tools in Australia for now
@@diydetailofficialok no worries
Ready
Thanks
Re: Using a leaf blower to dry your car: I blow about 80% of the water off my car and then use a drying towel and rinseless wash to remove any residue that might be left behind
Good call
So generally speaking, your recommendation for a cutting or finishing "pass" is covering the section 3 times (i.e. right/left-up/down-right/left)?
Correct
so on a brand new black chevy blazer do you recommend the red pad on a rotary machine? i want to follow up with your ceramic stack!
Yes
Yvan is hilarious "like one of those kitchen shows.. look we have pads!" Lmao
Thanks
Would this process work on old Mercedes Benz'es from the 80? 87 560SL in this case. Planning on getting a 21mm DA to do the paint correction as a first timer.
Yes
Hey guys, we own a 2019 Tundra with 2000 miles & we washed & decontaminated, then rotary polished it with your gold standard. We were going to use panel prep before your ceramic coating but we see you’re using water spot remover here. Do we have to do that before the panel prep? Is it necessary? Thanks!
If you’ve polished, no need
When do you think it be up for sale on your website? I know there is pre orders but wanted to know when will it be in stock
Should be in stock later this week
Need to step to a wool pad with my XC40 T5 R-Design (black) Volvo. Since the wool pad cuts deeper and the gold standard polish: “…removes *fine swirls* and *towel marks+…” It works well with the wool pad (?) or a different product needed? Next, finish with the waffle pad? ~ Thanks ~
Correct
Do you recommend the tar/sap remover as a routine step for prepping to polish, or only if there's visible issues? I have a black vehicle so it'd be hard to see that on there.
Only when needed
For a total newbie who only wants to polish his car a those of a couple of friends occasionally, might it make sense to buy a quality random orbital sander (about $100)? Yvan mentioned starting with an orbital sander from "the basement"?
Yes, find one that’s comfortable
Perfection is key!😅
Thanks
Can/ should you use decon towel with water spot removal?
No
Sorry for commenting twice….I’ve watched this two times….I was wondering if you have a video that shows the depth of the clear coat/paint before and after a 2 step average polishing job?
Unfortunately not yet
I was just playing around on my test panel yesterday. I created some pretty bad scratches and decided to try wet sanding them out. Well what do you know I burned through the clear coat. Preservation over perfection 100%.
It’s best to do it on a test hood.
Would u recommend using 6.5" pad on a 7" or would it work better on a 6" backing pad
Best on a 6 inch backing plate
Hoping to get away with a single step with Gold Waffle on my VW when I paint correct in April; but given I'm running it on a 3-mm stroke Orbital Sander, and its VW paint, I got the wool pad as well in case the Gold waffle won't remove the swirls as easily or efficiently. Time will tell when I do test sections.
Good idea! Please post your results in our facebook group bit.ly/DIYDetailFacebookGroup
@@diydetailofficial excited to document some results... Alas I don't use FB. Maybe tag you in an IG post or a YT vid? 🤔
That would be awesome
Would a simple polish like M205 work well with the yellow pad as a one step? I have that on hand and actually looking to pick up a couple of your yellow and red pads.
Yes
@diydetailofficial excellent! Looking forward to using your pads with my rotary!
@joshraines enjoy
Are you guys going to carry the IK sprayers? or Keg sprayers? Or is Amazon the place to purchase?

I am noticing micro scratches on the clear plastic that covers my speedometer. I have been using a glass cleaner to clean it. Which product should use to not put any more micro scratches in my dash while cleaning it?
DIY Detail Rinseless Wash
I have a 24' GMC sierra truck that is black which I recently purchased. Apparently the dealership ran it thru a car was and it really swirled and fine scratched the paint. I been using your micro fiber pad followed by the red polish pad on my Milwaukee 15 mm DA. The paint looks amazing but some of the scratches are still there after multiple passes. Is there another product I should use for a better cut then polish to get the remainder out before I apply the stack? and yes I know about perfection but I want it right.
Use our wool pad first
@@diydetailofficial Sorry I thought it was microfiber it is your wool pad I was using. I bought your kit with the three pads.
@user-xe2zj3tj8j you will need to do another pass or 2
@@diydetailofficial Got it!
Thanks for the great information. I always thought that the iron remover was supposed to remove all the “minerals” from the paint. Isn’t that what iron is? All these added steps and costs of products makes it difficult for weekend warriors like me to get the shine we want!
Iron remover doesn’t remove mineral contaminant. Those are primarily calcium deposits. A little goes a long way, these are products you use at every wash
I will be glad when you move is complete so I can order some stuff! You guys are great and love all the information you give!
We are all moved in and shipping again, thanks for your patience. New inventory is arriving every day to fill the new space and prevent inventory shortages.

Just got a brand new lexus. Have only driven it home from the dealer so far. Its pretty clean doesnt seem like they put any waxes on it. Im going to put on diy 5 year. Have gold standard. What would process be being that its so new? Im thinking a decon wash, diy clay towel and iron remover, quick polish then coat. Am I missing something?
Perfect, the only thing missing is have fun and enjoy.
@@diydetailofficialThanks for the quick reply. In this video they used a water spot remover. Do you think I should on the new car? If so after the iron decon? Then polish?
DIY panel prep before coating!
Yes panel prep! Apply DIY Detail Water Spot Remover after iron removal and before polishing.
Hi Yvan! Where can I buy your product with international shipping?

Can you just polish with a yellow waffle or should you follow up with the red foam pad afterwards?
No need if you’re satisfied with the results.
Nice1..D.Y & thank u
Thank you.
Would you go over company decals with the yellow pad or stay away from it?
If they are gloss, yes, lightly
@@diydetailofficial awesome.. thank up
Not sure what to do with my new SUV. Should I polish it even if it doesnt have any scratches or swirls and just use a finisher?
The less you polish, the longer the paint will last.
why not use water spot remover in conjunction with clay towel?
They are not compatible, DIY Detail Water Spot Remover doesn’t provide sufficient lubrication, and will damage the Perforated Synthetic Decontamination Towel
At what speed are you using for the red pad on a DA and rotary?
On rotary, speed 1 always, on our 25mm DA speed 1 or 2
Does dampening the pads work for others or just the ones you guys use?
It works for all
So after these steps are done what would you do on the next wash?
DIY Detail Rinse Less Wash
Darn Nick everything I wanted was just about on back order.
Give it a week, our warehouse transition to Chicago is still very much underway. Thank you for your patience!
@@diydetailofficial completely understandable brother. I was really happy to find you again on another channel.
Can you not use the wool pad and start with the yellow pad and finish with the red pad for light swirls?
Yes
Holy sheet 11:35
Thank you.
I can tell life for you guys is so good and fun at the moment with no major issues when you take so much time on this kind of unimportant thing. Free Julian Assange now.
For some people it’s very important.
Does it really matter what order you use water spot remover, tree sap remover, or tar remover when decontaminating a car, as long as they are rinsed well?
No
Hey ! Discover by accident. Stay to learn.
Thank you.
Will the tree sap remover take of dealer stickers? The dealership put a sticker with their name on in on both my wife's and my car and I want them gone.
It will remove the adhesive left behind.
No go doing the yellow waffle pad then the red jeweling pad?
Yes, that works
@DIY Detail I’ve never seen you use a Tar Remover, only an Iron Remover. I believe a Tar Remover doesn’t react well with those type Decon towels. So when, if at all, would you use a Tar Remover please???
Use DIY Detail Tree Sap Remover to remove Tar. Perforated Synthetic Decontamination Towel is not compatible with removing tar.
Let’s get ready to POLISH!!!
Thank you
