Great to see these cars together! Shame its always decided by a damn drag race though, yet if a lap time is done it's "pointless" - obviously a car that brakes better, corners better and has better mid range/top end isn't a good thing 🤔

Always been a Type R fan. The modern Type R looks are a bit too much though. The Golf R is just nicer to look at and a better all rounder for everyday use and has therefore become my favorite the past couple of years. Thanks for the thorough review Mat!

+Andrew Levitt This isn't the only drag race between these 3 cars...the results are always the same...RS destoys them... Look at their stats; someone posted a stats sheet with every stat possible. 0-100, 0-200, 5-100, 45-120, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 miles and so much more and the RS best them in every catagory accept 1...the 120-150 if i remember correctly. Not sure why people argue the facts...lol Ford low balled the hp numbers...everyone that has dynoed their cars are getting 311-315rwhp and 315 lbs ft tq so with awd drivetrain loss, that makes it 370bhp
Until the Focus RS comes up against a Golf R with DSG.Then it's a different story.The Ford engine seems to run out of puff in the top end .I would be very careful if tuning the RS there doesn't seem to be much latitude for tuning.

This is the best showdown in the history of cars, I mean it's just so much fun to see the best of the best from each car producing country/continent... at least originally. Just so insane to know these bad boys can keep up with many of the most expensive cars in the world, on the track at least.
I'm in no way a Golf R fan... but it feels like that car had a shit start.... It should be very similar to the Focus RS, and it should comfortably beat the Civic Type R

Why should it be very similar to the RS ? The RS has 50 more BHP and a smarter all wheel drive system, it may have had a shit start but the RS is head and shoulders above the both of them
Azz K Not 0-100 times or 1/4 mile times... but the start! RS have a good AWD system, but not 2-3 car lengths in the first 30-40m. Obviously the RS should be faster as it's 4.7 vs 5 0-100km/h. The start was the major difference.
Watch any other video with decent drivers and you'll see that the RS and Golf R are literally inseparable with their acceleration. If you think "50bhp more and a (questionable) smarter system" equals faster cars then you need to read a book.
den525 if it was the Automatic Golf with DSG it would have been a lot closer, I agree that it's not accurate, it needs to be done based off of times by a professional driver

Nice video and balanced views. The engine in the Type R has the most potential for the tuning market as it is capable of being a 2.7 liter with an available stroker kit that will see it rev to 10,000 rpm, and with an upgraded turbo, its will be able to drive on the street still, you'll not see any difference as it will tuck away neatly looking stock but will out perform all. The other thing to consider about these three cars is the Ford and VW being a German car will never see the care free reliability the Japanese Honda has.

Ford Focus RS all the way! I love the Recaro seats and I’ve watched many reviews on the RS. It almost beat the 2017 GT mustang in a drag race

Im 43 and I just wanna give my opinion, the honda and the ford look to be off the movie fast and furious, both really good cars in the performance department and would be ideal if I worked with the circus, please keep in mind I have given money to honda already "2017 CRF 450R" and ford has got money from me as well "91 mustang, 78 f150, 92 Taurus SHO". I tend to stick with the proven long lasting vehicles and in my world Volkswagen is the car I choose to purchase for a zippy commuter, vw may be the slowest in this video but the fit and finish of the Golf R is my style and the history of the golf is pretty much bullet proof as far as reliability and versatility impresses me a lot, plus there is no tracks around where I live...… 'track mode" hahahahahahahaha I find that funny for some reason.
Here in Canada the R & RS are priced the same as an S3. Therefore I went and bought an S3. Thanks for the review Mat.

Maybe because I want the car to be quick and fun to drive? And yet for it not to bee too flashy or look like a teenage ricer's car? Which Golf R does perfectly. And also it has the best interior and is most usable as a daily car

One thing nobody seems to be doing these days is rolling starts and in-gear times, which are much more revealing of a cars flexibility and real world performance. I think the results there would be rather different that what we see in all these drag races.
Thanks for this Matt. Great review. Was especially interested to see how the different AWD systems performed. As an AWD fan myself (for added handling stability during the frequent showers we get in Blighty), it really is quite shocking to see how poorly the VW AWD system did. Would prefer the 2WD system of the Leon Cupra than the Golf's! Would like to see how other 4WD systems perform both wet and dry conditions such as A45 AMG vs 4Matic, BMW xDrive, Quattro and Subaru. Thanks!

+Gerb Productions what a lot of people don't understand is having that sort of power going through the front wheels and still reducing torque steer means some serious engineering has gone into it. If the type r was all wheel drive then well, it would defo be on another level.

type r for the reliability and still fast as hell stock with a offroad exhaust system it should breath better make more power and a few stickers for even more horses
An exhuast won't net you that much hp unless it has some kind of emissions equipment on it.
The Civic type R won't be on jack stands for half their either....

The RS is better on paper and should win the drag race anyway. It's got launch control too. The golf r and the civic was gunna be close but to justify the result they should have done this race 3 times. I've been in an RS and it was the most fun I've ever had in a car. Remember all cars have there flaws and all cars have there beauty's. All these cars are brilliant. My favourite is the RS but I have nothing against these two other cars

Individual drivers I think, I've seen a video where over a quarter mile a manual Golf R was way closer to the Focus than this video and was beginning to close the Focus down by the quarter mile mark, factor in that the DSG Golf R is two tenths quicker to 100kph.......
Should have done a rolling race also to negate the advantage from 4wd off the line

Love the Civic, I bought one in the same colour :) The RS is a great car but potential head gasket worries, the Golf looks so bland, I need to look for 4 pipes to spot it from a basic model.
My main concerns too, reliability is very important, they were all around the same price but i choose the type r too, golf is, well a golf,there are a 1000 with r-line, and the ford is a reliability nigthmare,a black honda type r for me ☺️
kris c The ford doesn’t have a reliability problem, only the early ones did. They fixed all issues after June 2017 and they are bulletproof.

kris c Yeah they changed where the engines were produced and it meant that after June 2017 the engines were bulletproof - pre June 2017 cars that had the wrong HG were done under warranty and they had more issues because not all Ford dealers were sealing the head gasket properly so it would warp the head or crack it and coolant would leak into the gap and cause lots of problems. However 67 plate onwards are reliable and out of everyone I know that owns one only one fella had any issues and that was after the M400R Mountune tune did the engine in (his fault for not using Forged internals like Mountune states you should do!)
The 'problem' has simply an incorrect head gasket fitted in production. After the recalls, the Focus is a solid motor and an absolute weapon on British bends
It's a shame we didn't see lap times from all of them, i bet in a regular track with twisting curves and some straights the Type R would if not win, close the gap.Cool video tough, congratz.

That drag race was complete bullshit. It was a race of drivers, not a race of cars. Golf R is much faster than Civic and very close to a Ford.
All three are fast!! there's no such thing as much faster in this case unless you were to throw in to the bag an A45 AMG and RS3 then you'd see much faster!!
we have a 360 Video of this race coming soon. You will see then there was no jumping of the gun. The reason for the difference is becuase you can side step the clutch on the Focus and it launches as 70per cent of the power goes to the rears. You can side step the clutch with the Civic but being fwd it doesn't launch as well and takes time to get on boost. With the manual Golf R, whatever you do it bogs down when you release the clutch when you have over 2k revs on. The DSG has a launch mode which gets round this problem. We ran the race like a normal drag - one shot... Like in a competition. We did however practice launching the cars and that's when we found the problem with the Golf. Hope this makes sense. We really had no agenda, we just wanted to see what happened. And what you see here is exactly what happened

It's pretty obvious the civic would keep catching up and a 1-mile stretch if at all possible would single out the Civic winner I reckon. Having said that there's more to cars than just speed! Ford and Honda nailed it for those of us who want an involved drivers car!! VW nailed it for an all rounder!!
how is the Golf R faster than the civic? Stock vs stock, both cars being manunal, the Golf R bogs off the line mitigating it's AWD advantage over the FWD Civic. The type R makes more hp than the R. Also, being FWD, it has less drivetrain loss.
+Matt Beaupre A few Golf R fans are blinded by 0-60 times and that's why they think the Civic slower but it really doesn't matter which is fastest. All three are brilliant cars.

I think the type r and the focus rs have too many visual mods from the factory, I get that the spoilers have purpose but still, the golf r is the nicest looking because of its simplicity
