  • I'm not even a UCONN guy but I have always loved basketball. My mom taped me this game when I was in first grade because she wouldn't let me stay up and watch it and I watched this game over and over again. I'd practice on my home made goal outside and mimic all sorts of these plays from both teams. I can still recite almost word for word about the first 15 minutes of commentary. Don't know what it was but I loved this game as a kid.

    • @@ant5355 yes he was incredible and defensively he (Okafor) was the sole biggest difference maker on that '04 team! But he kicked it to yet another gear on defense in the final few minutes against Duke! The biggest contribution though to UConn down the stretch of that game was Rashad Anderson! If he doesn't hit those threes on back to back possessions they don't win that game

  • best championship game of all time! No team ever lead by more than 7. Game in doubt down to the wire. I will admit my bias as a UCONN fan, but never understood why this was an upset, UCONN was 33-2 out of the friggin Big East. Those of us in the know knew. And again a few years later in the semis, taking down Duke. So glad UCONN is still Big East, but only reason they weren't invited to the ACC party with Pitt Cuse, ND and Louisville is because we stomped Duke and coach K.

Agreed with you on two things - it was the most competitive final ever and it was in absolutely no way whatsoever an upset! I've been a diehard Dukie since 1981-82 as a fourth grader and I always believed UConn was the better team going into that NCAA tournament! Duke took advantage of a down year for the ACC that season and was very rarely tested which I knew would end up not being a good sign! And I was right! • I recall working the area of Storrs, CT during the early stages of the NCAA tournament in '99. One dead quiet morning before the Sweet 16, we came upon the campus at about 9am. Class was in but the feeling one had told of something special coming. It was when UCONN was still rather small and there weren't as many bandwagon fans. You could almost feel it in the air. Jump ahead to the day they arrived back in CT after beating Duke.....I still had no voice as we got to skip out of work a bit ahead of normal to beat the parade back to campus. From near the airport in Windsor Locks, Down 91 to 84 and all the way through along Route 195 to the doors of UCONN, there wasn't one bridge or exit that didn't have hundreds of people gathered. Fire Departments, Police and Emergency responders up on bridges and at exits, intersections and parking lots. All with quickly made banners and fans screaming to the busses as they went by. I was in Tolland along the 195 route as arms were out windows with #1s for everyone! What a way to wrap up the 20th century!

The problem was the lack of respect for UConn going into the game from the rest of the country and the pundits! That point spread was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw! I thought all along to be honest you guys we're the better team and you didn't prove me wrong! UConn was the worst possible matchup for us and so was your lineup experience! The only real close win they had was an overtime game at Saint John's, otherwise the vast majority of their games were never even remotely competitive. • That game was the biggest robbery in the history of basketball. As I recall their only other loss was on a last second shot against Cincinnati in the 3rd game of the season in the great Alaskan Shootout, and then they proceeded to start destroying everything in their path, especially as the season progressed, as it was a Soph, dominated team along with national freshman of the year in Corey Maggette. When those 2 early calls both went against Duke on charging, when they actually should have gone against UCONN, I knew Duke was in trouble. With about 5 or 6 minutes left in the game, Billy Packer said...Not only has UCONN got all the bounces, they've got all the calls, and Duke was still somehow in the game. I expect Hamilton to go off in the game, but when that other guard who wasn't known for scoring got hot, I again knew Duke was in trouble. In order to give Voscol a break because he couldn't handle Brand in his dreams, they allowed these two thugs to come in the game and practically hack Brand to death. His arms were filled with welts after the game. If they would have been actually calling fouls against UCONN, Duke would have won that game on the free throw line because Brand was a good free throw shooter. This game was a tragedy because it may have broken up potentially the best collage team ever, as for the 1rst time Duke lost players early to the draft including All American's Avery, Langdon and Brand, who was also NCAA Player of the Year, and all Sophmores and NCAA Freshman of the year Maggette. I guess they believed if they're going to get robbed like that, they might as well get paid. Duke then reloaded and won the NCAA title in 2001 with a sophmore laden team. Can you imagine the 2001 team if those other 4 were still on it. That robbery against UCONN may have stopped a dynasty only equaled by the UCLA Bruins in the 60's and 70's. And I would have put the 2001 Duke team beating them any day of the week.

But not so much '06! The level at which Florida was playing the defensive end of the court would have made it extremely difficult for UConn, especially because that was one of Calhoun's weakest defensive clubs! They were fortunate in that year's East Region beating both Kentucky and Washington, taking advantage offensively! • Yup, 3rd time in 8 tournaments from 95-02 that UConn was EASILY the best 2 seed, to the point few would’ve objected to them getting a 1seed, and the committee puts them in the bracket with the best overall team in the country/tournament favorite. Shameful. Their Elite 8 losses in ‘95 & ‘02 should’ve been the title game those years.

'83 NC State winning, '85 Villanova winning, '88 Kansas winning, '97 Arizona winning! Those we're upsets! '99 UConn beating Duke was about as evenly matched a championship game as there's ever been, so it in no way was an upset! I've been a diehard Dukie since '81-'82 and as good a team as '99 was, we didn't have a true leader like we'd had with Wojo! He was the consummate team captain (locker room and on court), which is one thing that never gets mentioned (the significance of his graduation)! U can have all the talent in the world but you hafta have a point man that had Wojo's complete package! No, he wasn't a points guy but he brought all the intangibles! We could have used a guy of his likeness down the stretch of that UConn game!
