  • You gotta love the '98 team. Beating UCLA by 30, making the comeback and getting the revenge on dUKe, beating the best team in Stanford history, and then taking down the hot Utah team for the title. But we paid for it...we had to endure 3 more years of Saul Smith playing 30-35 minutes per game. I'd love to know UK's +/- while Saul was on the floor in '98? In my opinion every minute he played as a freshman was mins we didn't have Mills on the floor draining 3's. But somehow they played great and won the title. And beating dUKe in a Regional Final made it that much sweeter. This team bought Tubby over a decade being the head man at UK. Tubby was a pretty good coach, but he just couldn't recruit. Which is the most important thing in college basketball. His best class was the Randolph Morris, Joe Crawford, Ramel Bradley, & Rondo class. But that class was a bust other than Rondo. Tubby came close to another Final Four a couple times with Patrick Sparks hitting the 3 vs Michigan St, ran into Dwayne Wade in '03, etc. But we never tasted that glory again with Tubby.

    • That's a dumba##, bs thing to say. The '96 team had all the heart you could ask for from college players. Enough to only lose 2 games all season (unlike the '98 guys, where was the heart in those losses?), and those 2 were to final four teams.

If I sound salty, its because I am; but I am more salty at Scotty Thurman for that rainbow 3 in the 94 title game with like a minute to go. Duke really mismanaged this game the later part of the 2nd half when they were up over 10. I guess this is our payback for the Laettner shot.

  • I think a reason why folks are unlikely to see a Coach K. vs. John Calipari matchup in the tournament (despite the yearly drool by sports pundits over freshmen talent), is because the matchup was unique in the times it happened back in Philadelphia (1992) and this game in St. Petersburg (1998). Obviously, both coaches will meet in November at MSG.

The following year, the opposite happened, even though not much media mentioned him bc of their no lose record til the final 4 happened. • Even as great as the Blue Devils have been in the last 35 years, Duke for a long time was the missed opportunity leader of college basketball. In 1886 Louisville came from behind to win the title in the final minute; from 88 through 90 three flops at the Final 4; in '94 they lost to Arkansas in the final minute; in '98 they let Kentucky back from 17 down in then 2nd half, then in 1999, they lost to Connecticut on a stumble; and in 2002, they missed an easy inside shot to let Indiana eliminate them. Still, they have won 5 NCAA titles in a vastly more competitive era than John Wooden ever saw.

His subs, his constant changing on D, He was coaching as good as a coach can coach. 14, put my on his back. 5, heart of a lion, tremendous floor leadership. Padgett playing Like above 10 iq. No center on court for last 10 minutes. Tells you tubby could figure out a game, during the game. Not afterwards. Thanks tubby! You earned your championship. Like most, we all loved tubby. And if Keith bogans didn't tweak his ankle, tubby was bringing another title.. its 2020, Calipari don't even care to win for fans, it's all about NBA, he will never win another one. Anthony Davis is only reason hes still employed at UK. If hes such a great recruiter, why only one championship? Recruiting championship teams is why were ky. Not because of john wall, big cousins, Championships. Fire Calipari, we won more without him. That's games that mean something. He gets outcoached every year. Are next coaches. Rick Pitino!!!!!! • Think about all the great Kentucky teams that didn't go all the way and somehow THIS team did. Jeff Sheppard? Scott Padgett? Give me a break.

    • What an ignorant statement. Those guys were clutch, and this team was loaded with talent. You forgot to mention Evans, Turner, Edwards, Mohammad and Mills. I guess that was on purpose to fit your narrative.

  • Just in case you missed it the previous 1,458,024 times it was aired on tv in the past few weeks. It's ok though. Nobody in other major college basketball markets, even the #1 market, would like to see a couple of their teams games get shown again that you refuse to do.
