2024 Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport v Nissan Patrol Warrior Comparison | XL off-road SUV showdown

Can Australian ingenuity give the Nissan Patrol an edge over the toughest Toyota LandCruiser? 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
The latest-generation 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series has landed blow after blow on its Nissan Patrol arch-rival, whose old bones are simply no match for the younger, more dextrous full-size off-road SUV.
But this particular Nissan is no ordinary land barge. This is the homegrown Nissan Patrol Warrior and it rides on a locally upgraded suspension package comprising a serious lift, improved hydraulic body roll control system and all-terrain wheels/tyres, plus several other updates.
So before the all-new Y63 Nissan Patrol arrives in the next 18 months or so, brandishing a downsized turbo-petrol V6, can this lusty V8-powered Warrior even the odds against the indomitable Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport?
Senior Editor Feann Torr took both off-road specialists into the bush to find out in this comparison.

  • About three days after we finished filming this epic duel, Nissan confirmed it would soon offer a bunch of upgrades on the Patrol Warrior in Australia, including a cool box, bigger central touch-screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, not to mention a wireless phone charger. It adds $3000 to the price. Check out the updates here: www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/2024-nissan-patrol-to-receive-long-awaited-infotainment-upgrade-145362/

    • Also, at 7:45 we mention the head up display in the Toyota has sharp visuals but they look blurry - that's because the camera couldn't focus on the windscreen data properly. So while it looks munted in the footage, it's actually really crisp and clear in real life.

  • Can’t wait for the Y63. The new Infinity QX80 looks very good. Much better than the LX600. Engine same family as the GT-R engine (from their own words) which is bombproof but with 15 years of technological advancement. I’m sure they’ve learned a thing or two to improve it even further. The transmission is also the 9-speed from the G-wagon but slightly reworked by JATCO who are licensed to do so by Mercedes. Knowing the Japanese they made it even more durable seeing as the Patrol/QX80 is their halo model.

      @JaysonMarcruz@JaysonMarcruz11 күн бұрын
    • @@JaysonMarcruz Yes. Also, a huge plus is the boot space. You know, a vital part in an off-road long distance vehicle. If you opt for 7-seater in both the LX600 or QX80 (or, 8-seater; double three-row, which is also a option in the QX80), the QX80 boot is much bigger. And just overall much more luxurious. They absolutely nailed it. The Patrol have also arguably always been the better off-roader than the Landcruiser series. And to top it all off, it´s cheaper.

    @michaelsecomb4115@michaelsecomb41157 күн бұрын
    • Yes the Land Cruiser did not have low range, and even later when they did have low range it was still not suitable for the mountainous terrain due to its 34 degree side roll over angle compared to the Land Rovers 45, so the construction stage of the build was done by Land Rovers, and the managers drove a couple of Land Cruisers on the paved road.

  • I struggle to understand that a supposed car reviewer fails to mention that the Landcruiser has 5 different on road modes of suspension settings, which also changes the mapping and throttle response. The comments made regarding the “boat” feeling would be eliminated if you just took the time to understand that it has different driving modes…. •5 drive mode select - Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+ • Adaptive Variable Suspension which changes everything with just the dial on the dash….However, you fail to say what you were driving in, ECO I presume… Maybe you can get somebody to assist you from actual owners before you “pretend “ to know what you are driving which indicates a biased review, or at the very least, uneducated. Your review is like comparing a 1990’s V8 commodore thirsty petrol ( premium 98 octane) but forgot to mention that point, to a modern day V6 twin turbo Diesel BMW. They are the same but totally different.

  • I have no bias when it comes to Toyota v Nissan, I actually love both, the interior of the Toyota is way better in my opinion, plus having front lockers is a bonus. But the extra ground clearance on the Nissan and that V8 sound is just awesome. $45K buys a lot of accessories including front lockers. The lux extras the Toyota has a nice, like the heated/cool seats but they aren’t deal breakers. Both very capable 4x4’s but price difference for me wins in the end.

  • There is another direct competitor in the market up against these two. The 6cyl P400 or D300 Defender 110 or 130 or even the V8 one. It’s better than either of these. Also the LR Discovery and Ineos Grenadier as you say. Don’t forget the Toyota is Running Clearance not actual ground clearance at the lowest point as it should be measured. It’s less in reality. Additionally the Patrol is better with its coil springs and independent suspension all round. No leaf springs or solid axles getting in the way. The CarPlay seemed to take up ⅔ of the screen on the GR Sport, not ⅓ as stated. Recirculation control must Always be a button never buried in a screen (or it must be persistent on every single screen) as you need to be able to activate it within 1-2 seconds when a dirty diesel pulls away from you at the lights (unless you want cancer) etc. This is a deal breaker for me - but so is buying any Toyota. Most electric cars have it buried in a menu so I’ll also never buy one til that is resolved. You enter a cloud of dust, pollen, diesel fumes, smoke etc you need recirculation super fast. No excuses. The Warrior should have been based on the Ti-L so that’s a let down. Funny how it’s claimed these are a nightmare in the city. I drive a 6m+ long Pantech light truck in the city at night and in the day. I can reverse park in almost any standard width park with ease and I have no centre mirror and a box on the back - even without a reversing cam on some vehicles. It’s super easy to manoeuvre so same as these vehicles - you just need to get used to it. They aren’t that large.

    • It´s the Japanese way of doing things. The engine is heavily detuned for reliabilty/abuse and to meet emissions for the future as well as still being more than enough to do the job. There is a strong possibility we´ll see a hybrid LC300/LX600 at some point in the near future as Toyota wants the LX700H denomination to be trademarked, hence downsizing to V6. Ferrari, McLaren etc are all following suit. They have no choice. If Toyota wanted to, they could easily make a V8 that would blow the competition away. They have more money than all the other car manufacturers and alot of history in racing motorsport, rally, dakar endurance, le mans, super gt, gt300, gt500, super formula, formula 1 etc. They had the most powerful V10 engine in Formula 1 with over 1000hp. They are in literally everything. Toyota know what they are doing.

  • Every time they put the Landcruiser and the Patrol together in a battle, the end is always the same with the comment on price. Before I even watched it, I knew it would be the same comment. Some of us don’t want to drive an archaic vehicle, regardless of price.

    • Toyota sells more LandCruiser's in Australia than Nissan does Patrols, but the gap is closing so there's clearly a lot of love for the Patrol still.

      @carsales@carsales14 күн бұрын
    • With much respect; Yes that’s true and there is a strong love for patrol, but Nissan shafted Australian. Left us with a 12 year old car and went to the American market and didn’t re invest in the Aussies that stood by Nissan. Now Nissan pics is lowest grade car and does a lift and wants to still carry our market with a 10 year old trim. That’s why I’d say you would have to be drunk just to support Nissan with their lack of respect for Aussies. And their poor excuse for a ‘upgrade’. You could easily buy a higher spec model and do the same or much better Nissan. I mean exhaust on the side but still out the rear? This car is a patchwork of crap. And thirsty crap for your money.

  • Apart from the outdated interior, the patrol is a really ugly vehicle, inside and outside. Even an 80-series LandCruiser is much better than this. Don't compare this patrol to the J300, that's an insult.
