How Do Honeybees Get Their Jobs? | National Geographic

Every honeybee has a job to do. Some are nurses who take care of the brood; some are janitors who clean the hive; others are foragers who gather pollen to make honey. Collectively, honeybees are able to achieve an incredible level of sophistication, especially considering their brains are only the size of sesame seeds. But how are these jobs divvied up, and where do bees learn the skills to execute them?

  • "And it shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes. In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard." - 2 Nephi 17:18-20, Book of Mormon

    • Bees can switch roles, when needed, though. Sometimes circumstances change, so they have some ability to 'soul search' but who knows what that's like? :)

      @TragoudistrosMPH@TragoudistrosMPH5 жыл бұрын
    • @@TragoudistrosMPH As you're describing it though, it would only be out of necessity, so they would already know the new role they need to fulfill, no "soul searching" necessary. Surely they don't have the mental ability to be imaginative, just go from A to B with every "decision".

      @Tentacular@Tentacular5 жыл бұрын
    • @@Tentacular dude (or dudette) actually they are fascinating, look up their voting systems for determining the next hive location. Several bees find new spots, and they describe the location, and the bees vote on where to live, majority taking hold. Bees communicate, so we can observe a little of their decision making. We can see the A to B but we don't know. Same how our parents make decision B to response A, but we can only guess why. We get better at guessing as we know them more, but remember how often we find out there is more to the story? Parents hide a lot from us. (It's only relevant because "we don't know what we don't know" and if it's true with the ones closest to us, millions of years of differences can be staggeringly different :) ) Scientifically, how could we test their experience? We really don't even know the minimum amount of brain needed for emotions. Maybe they do, maybe they don't?

      @TragoudistrosMPH@TragoudistrosMPH5 жыл бұрын
    • @@TragoudistrosMPH I think you are romanticising them too much. There's always logic to everything. Emotion is not some magical thing above science.

      @Tentacular@Tentacular5 жыл бұрын
    • @@Tentacular and that's my point. Is emotion special? Philosophy and religion are the reasons Western societies think emotions are special because we are 'special/higher beings'. Science started with that premise and is testing it, but you have to start with either animals do or don't have emotions. I don't see proof for either, but I'd lean towards emotions because general feelings and preferences sound more plausible than finely tuned reactions to so many varied situations. Preferences, alone, make me think it's likely, because we typically feel out preferences. I don't know a good scientific test for it, so I'm not decided :) The voting isn't romanticization, the scouts compete, describing the location they found and the bees select among those. I didn't describe how or even if they feel anyway about it. It's interesting stuff, though.

    @zroote@zroote5 жыл бұрын
    • Bees also bring back pollen. It is made into something called bee bread and is fed to baby bees.

      @stansmith4054@stansmith40545 жыл бұрын
    • Agree with Stan. Nectar is not a source of protein, but pollen is. The bees bring it back to feed the brood so they can grow. Do a Google image search of "bee pollen basket", and you'll see the bees carry the pollen on their rear legs to bring back to the hive.
