Hi everyone, let's model and unwrap a Flashbang in Blender!
This is the Blender part of the tutorial where you will learn how to setup a reference image to the right scale, lowpoly and highpoly creation by making use of various free plugins, modifiers, tools as well as unwrapping our low poly. Once this is done we are getting everything prepared with proper naming convention as well as material ID colors for the bake and texturing part which happens in the Marmoset Toolbag 4 tutorial after this one - you can follow that part by downloading the one month free trial version if you don't have it. 👌
0:00 Intro

Tarkov game assets and weapon designs with Its attachments for weapons were some of my main reasons for wanting to get into hard surface modeling in 3D back in 2019.

  • Hi everyone, I am glad you like the tutorial! I received a few questions and comments about the 'game ready' description and I understand that this is maybe a bit of a generic term used. I wanted to emphasize with that title that it's an object that we are going to have a low poly for that we are unwrapping and texturing. This is usually what we do when we put something in games. Now the other thing that I got asked is if the polycount is not too high? Quick answer: it depends but no it's not. For that it's important to mention that I am a 3D Artist who focuses strongly on first person shooters and what we create here is perfectly in line with a grenade that would be used in games such as Rainbow Six Siege, CS:GO or Call of Duty. In my tutorials you learn how to create things the same way we do it in the industry. Of course if this was made for a top down or third person shooter where you only see a few pixels of this grenade it would be considered too high and you could optimize it more but think of it as a flashbang that you hold in your hands in a first person shooter. You will see it up close and it will fill out a significant portion of the screen space. So long story short: when it comes to polycount it is important to consider what the object is made for and in my tutorials I generally make objects as you would find them in first person shooter games where you have weapons that you hold in your hands. For that the polycount is perfectly fine. Come join us at the ChamferZone discord if you want to talk and learn with other artists about things like this 🙂 discord.gg/sAkTtKG

    • @@patriotaRBC This is great to hear! Yes I would say that once you have the basic understanding of modeling absorbed it's all pretty straight forward regardless of what software you follow it in. Max, Maya, Blender etc. Blender is quite similar to 3dsMax in a lot of ways and it's awesome we get it for free.

    • People who question it, don't know enough about game-art or 3D art in general. Simple. People honestly shouldn't really question it, as you probably have like, thousand times more experience than the people commenting negatively about it. Your tutorials are the best, and I'm using these to transition to Blender from Autodesk. The polycount of this asset could even run in a full environment setting a mobile device such as Oculus Quest as well. No problem. I got 5 years experience working in VR/AR graphic-development to prove that, and once I'm done with this flashbang I'm going to play around with it on my quest. It's crazy to me you even have to explain yourself about this, to back-seaters who think they know better. Your work is amazing and your experience shows! Stay awesome Tim. You make the best of the best.

Nice to see you're doing some blender stuff now too as I couldn't really get into 3ds max back then but am having a lot more luck with blender. A bit unconventional with non standard shortcuts and plugins, but hey, it works! Definitely goona look into jmesh tools for my own workflow after this video. By the way, a little tip, instead of selecting 2 edges on the center piece then repeating it at 18:08, you can select the whole loop then make use of Checker Deselect to deselect every other edge, super useful. I don't remember where it is (probably in the selection menu) but I always just find it in the F3 search menu.

    @notpumkin@notpumkin3 жыл бұрын
  • If you have issues with JMesh acting weird heavily distorting or twisting your meshes, it's because the object needs to have its transforms reset. Select the object, hit Ctrl-A, then "All Transforms". Then make sure your world gizmo is set to the world origin (or at least the point you want your object to revolve around) by pressing Shift-S then "Cursor to World Origin".

  • I have just discovered this channel and you have very amazing and professional content, keep it up! As for the part at 1:32:00, one simple way was to box select the middle part, invert the selection, hide the selected (so that you remain only with the middle section) then you can select one face of the outer shape and use select linked. You can then use the sharp or normal option. Of course in this situation, it was simple so the manual selection isn't a problem but I just thought I mention the "select similar" tool in case a more difficult situation comes up. You can also specify which material you would want to appear on the bevel using the material index option.

  • Coming from 10 years of 3ds max I found it hard at first, clunky, hard to get used to, but with the shortcuts and plugins I'm starting to see just how powerful this free software is. I can do exactly the same workflow and Blender might even be faster now at this stage, the bevel weights for high poly works so much better than quad chamfer which I found to be quite buggy , the batch rename also is a godsend , renaming suffixes of induvial parts in 3ds max took forever. I'm still getting used to unwrapping in blender but I think in the initial base unwrap blender does a better job than 3ds max also.

  • Wow thanks a lot for this amazing free tutorial! My objective is to get in the game industry and this helps a lot! I've read all comments/replies but still got few questions if you find the time to answer : - When you make your UVs, you move a part out of an island (1:54:30) but you don't make a seam, why do you move it and why not adding a seam? - About pixel margins, you eyeball it, is it fine or should we be more accurate in general? I've read somewhere, the ideal pixel margin between the islands and the frame of the UV should be [resolution/128], so for 2k textures, 16 pixels. I think it is about downscaling and to avoid texture bleeding? - At 1:57:40, you move the UV island of the duplicated inner part to avoid overlap, is it because otherwise the software would bake twice the normal maps and add them up? Also you do +1 on Y axis, can you do +1 on X axis instead? Or maybe it is a convention to avoid issues when you work with UDIMs ? Also if you have 4 copies of the same island, do you have to go +1, +2, +3? - I always thought we should use the minimum amount of seams to avoid breaks in textures, does it really matter? For instance, I would've never put 6 seams for the hexagonal bottom part, but only 1 to unfold the cyclic part and make it flat. - When you use the UV Smoothing from TexTools, does it mark all seams as sharp edges and replaces the autosmooth? So in the end, you get 1 smoothing group per island, and I assume this is mandatory? If I use the Weighted Normals modifier instead, will it give worse results? - all your islands are horizontal or vertical, is it to avoid bad aliasing/stepping ? Also a side question, just curious, do you think/know if recruiters care about an "all quad topology" ? I've read that I should put some all quad topo projects in my portfolio to showcase that I know how to make good topology. Otherwise if you know a tutorial that goes very deep in UV/baking I'd gladly take that, for me it feels like this is the hardest and the most crucial part of the whole process. Thanks again for these amazing tutos! Really looking forward for that weapon tutorial in Blender, I planned to buy your AK tutorial but I guess I'll wait a bit more for this one instead :)

  • I just finished this tutorial with Blender 3.0 and the only issue I ran into was the "Modifier List" addon not working with 3.0 yet. I didn't really feel the need for it until the end of the video when I wanted to disable/toggle all the modifiers at the same time, so I googled for another solution and found out there is a built-in addon called "Modifier Tools" that lets you do this.

  • Is it necessary to use the same texel density on the whole model? The inside of the body (the part with the holes) and the inside part of it for example wouldn't be seen as much as the outside. Wouldn't it be a good idea to scale those down a bit so the other elements can have a big more resolution?

  • Awesome stuff. I had no idea about some of these add ons. Wanted to ask you about weighted normals and triangulation before export and bake though. Is there a reason for why you skip these steps? Also that UV smoothing with tex tools I had no idea worked like that. Is it different than managing your hard edges manually through selecting and marking edges? When I smooth my UVs like you did, the mesh just turns blobby. Anyway, love that you are giving away your expert knowledge on YT like that and for free - absolutely crazy. Would definitely pay for one of your tuts. Thanks!

    @adamplechaty@adamplechaty3 жыл бұрын
    • Hello Adam, yes the UV smoothing is the most critical step after doing the unwrapping. If you do that you ensure that the normals are as perfect as they can be for the bake and that's also why I don't bother with anything else when it comes to normals. Textools will sort that all out with that step. Don't worry about things looking blobby! You should see some of the organic weapons I worked on at Warframe. Once I apply the uv smoothing before the bake you'd think this looks horrendous but once you bake and apply the normal map it will be looking perfectly fine. You can also watch my Uunwrapping special eventhough it's for 3dsmax but it might shed some more light on these things. On that object there aren't many ngons to begin with and most is quads so I didn't really expect there to be any issues with how an engine would interpret the triangulation but you can certainly set it to triangulate. It's something I should have mentioned at the end so it's a good point.

I moved it when i created it because it was right in the reference picture but instead I should have moved the reference pic. It seems like it messed up the origin point after deleting the other faces but not sure really.

  • if your having problems with the array circle make sure the cylinder u created is not scaled or u wont get the desired result. Once u create the cylinder just move the vertex to match the reference so u avoid scaling values then it will work perfectly. Also at 1:23:40 make sure before u inset the Fuze text boundary option is on.

No matter what I do, the circle array appears as a stretched out and heavily distorted shape. On top of that, no matter how many copies of the object I wanna replicate, I only get one copy as if the desired quantity is inoperable.

I'm guessing this is just something that was changed but it makes it a little confusing to tell if it's actually done anything or not.
