ya’ll, i filmed this in august. AUGUST. and if you asked me where august went or how the first month of 2021 is apparently almost over, i couldn’t tell you. but hey, i finally edited the vid? 😂
(should i watch the live action mulan?? i haven’t seen it but i’ve seen some meh reviews :/)
but hey guys 🤗 this is kinda a hot mess of a movie commentary, but i figured i'd post it anyways lol. (if i look ~sweaty~ by the end it's because i literally went on a walk in the middle of it ??? why ?? i have no idea 😅 but i'm stuck with this footage now so i hope it's at least somewhat fun, despite the UGHness of it, lol)
this was my first time watching mulan in legit years, i think i may have been 6 or 7 the last time i watched it? so it was cool seeing it again & actually getting to appreciate all the amazing details this film has!!! (because i'm certain lil me was NOT paying attention to the symbolism, lmao)
but what do you guys think?! should i watch the live action one?! i gotta keep going on the MCU films so i can watch ming-na wen in agents of shield again!!! (also I FILMED THIS LITERALLY BEFORE WE KNEW EVERYTHING THAT WENT DOWN IN MANDO S2 THAT'S CRAZY) anyways, drop your thoughts in the comments down below, and let's talk mulan!! :)

  • The beauty of this movie is that Shan Yu never once disregarded Mulan. When it was revealed that Mulan was the soldier it was just another day for Shan Yu. That’s because the Huns had female soldiers and warriors in their society. Women were shown more respect and held a higher social status in those cultures than in countries like China and Japan outside of just being keepers of the household and giving birth. That’s mainly because the lifestyle of the steppe was so harsh that everyone needed to be involved, down to the last man, woman, and child, in order to survive.

      @fightingfaerie@fightingfaerie3 жыл бұрын
    • That's wholly due to their culture being cavalry based though. From horseback, the sheer speed and impact of a charging stallion renders both men and women equally lethal. The same was true for the Scythian culture of the Russian steppes around this time as well, they likewise had male and female warriors. In tribal civilization, and such cultures that Romans would call barbarian ones, it's easier for female warriors to exist since every individual fights for themselves without any real comprehensive training, strategy, unity or discipline that comes with soldiery. When soldiery is the case, when we're talking professional armies the problem arises as we see in Mulan, that women have less physical stamina and capacity than men to handle rigorous training and the kind of fighting that requires enormous discipline of mind and body to function as one in a unit. And as history showed progressively, the barbarian type of fighting was no match for the arrival of more and more specialized forces. Pure and raw strength of force and fight, as is Shan Yu's way of war, can get you far, but only so far.

The irony is that many agrarian cultures ended up developing main female deities as a figure of mother earth. Since many of the hunting cultures had men as their main gods, and also the values were predominantly masculine. It is counterproductive that they had a better treatment of women.

      @ridler_ns6558@ridler_ns65583 жыл бұрын
    • @@halliegeary8701 There is a difference. Many hunting cultures of the time just stayed that way because they lived in difficult environments. It is difficult to say that part of those customs were only because men were lacking for the tasks or because their nomadic and practical life was relatively equal. There is a special case like the Spartans, a culture that allowed women to receive an education and marry whoever they wanted, in addition to having their opinion and honor respected. They are, so to speak, the most modern example that maintained that same essence of hunting cultures in paleolithic adapted to a stable civilization.

Even in modern western wartime, you hear about men who were deemed "unfit to serve" being mercilessly persecuted by their community and family, and even hating themselves. I think there wasn’t an age restriction but like there was a requirement of 1 man per family so that’s the issue. Little Brother reminds me of Pua from Moana and Mushu reminds me of Heihei. Tell me I’m wrong. The fact that hygiene is a “girly” habit explains so much about men... So the thing is, Mulan saved her dad because her dad was already in the army so he would’ve been with the people who were massacred in the village. WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER. Nothing else to say but YES!!! Even though Mulan isn’t a princess, we can see from the very beginning that she’s a Disney princess. Just look at how she interacts with her horse (I think the horses name is Khan). Either Khan is like a genius and super well trained horse that has peak physical condition or Mulan is a Disney princess and can speak to animals. Also I don’t know how in the world Mulan was able to survive in the cold like that. I can’t even walk outside in the snow without freezing my hands off. Also, are the soldiers technically in drag?? That’s awesome. When you said she’s in a dress I thought you were going to say they can all see up her dress into her pants... hopefully she had something underneath. 16:16 is literally the scene with May and Kara where it’s like “I know all your moves, I was SHIELD” and then May goes “Not all of them” and Ming has the same exact tone in her voice like, “I am unpredictable and I’m about to destroy you.” The blue hat dude is just awful. He should be fired and Mulan can just do it over zoom. Fun fact of the day, the voice actor for Chi-Fu, played May’s dad in AOS. Second fun fact of the day, in the descendants movies, the person who played Mulan’s daughter, Lonnie, was played by Dianne Doan, AKA Kora on AOS. What a coinkedink. Awesome reaction and hope you’re doing well!!

    • okay that was literally me as a kid watching the sharks in finding nemo though, so i feel that 😂 i still can't watch that movie; i've been scarred for life 😂 but i can totally see how they look like zombies!!! they straight up came back from the dead (i still really don't know how they survived the avalanche, lol) but omg, YES at all of the ming-na wen fangirling; i seriously love her so much!!! she's absolutely amazing & i feel like none of my friends see it, either (idk HOW though, look at how talented she is!!!!!) i LOVE all the parallels between may & mulan (& how randomly connected this is to shield?! that's so crazy about the voice actor being the same as may's dad!! and haha, that's making me want to rewatch the descendants now 😂 i loved lonnie's story!!) i hope you're doing well, too!! i think you commented on a past vid that your mental health hasn't been the best, so i hope things start to look up soon :) it's been a rough as all heck start to the year, lol. i hope everything's okay!! and i hope we all make it out a lil bit better than wanda seems to be doing 😅

    • Now that I think about it I have no clue how I was able to watch finding Nemo. I probably just blocked it out. I agree 100%. I have just pestered my friends and family enough so they understand how talented she is or they just say they understand so I stop talking. Descendants is great but I still haven’t been able to watch the third movie bc I grew up watching Cameron Boyce... just too many emotions. And thanks, I kinda just got thrown off the metaphorical rails but now I’m easing my way back on. I hope so too because she is kinda going insane at the moment... I’ve gotten my best friend hooked on WandaVision and now she’s watching all the marvel movies plus your reactions since I gave her your chronological order list which is probably the most precise one out there I haven’t watched the newest episode yet because my Disney+ suddenly broke since it thinks my dad is under the age of 18 somehow... but it’s hopefully getting fixed this weekend. Heard a lot about AOS easter eggs and I can’t wait!! :)

  • It's true that Mulan probably could've taken the job, but the fact that Emperor offered to her, and respected her wish to turn it down, is a huge thing in itself. He's basically allowing her to choose how she lives, but telling her that the option is open if she ever changes her mind. To top it off, the fact that the Emperor, the most powerful man in country, bowed in respect to her, a woman, in the time period this is set in, is the ultimate show of respect.

  • Even though this movie is a classic "girl power" movie, it also speaks volumes about masculinity, both toxic and wholesome. And how culture forces them to be something they are not. The father has his home demeanor where he clearly loves his daughter and is trying to do what is best as society dictates he should (he ends up being wrong and he grows from it!). Then the messenger comes and he drops the cane becoming the "macho" who is emotionless, strong, warrior. The same can be said of all the other males in the movie, they have their official "macho" persona that they drop as soon as they aren't being "men". Even the emperor drops the whole dignified persona to tell lover boy that he needs to follow his heart, not what society expects of him! Great reaction thank you!

  • 3:20 I think that people forgetting about the war was intentional. It shows how you can be so sucked into your own life and problems while a freaking war is going on. Same thing with the “a girl worth fighting for” song ending. It’s easy to act like war isn’t that bad until you see the consequences. For them, it was a bombing/fire. For some people, it can be seeing someone they’ve known their whole life unable to do things because they went to war.

  • Another beauty of this movie is that a lot of the underlying themes aren't just like "woo women empowerment" but a lot more relatable things beyond sex/ gender or socio economical status.. Like in the first parts you can see themes like never meeting the standards that society has set for you..Then with her parents...not knowing whether you would really be able to live up to the expectations they have for you... In training camp...changing how you look so that other people won't judge you for who you are.. The thought that you might not be the strongest or fastest but you damn hell will be the smartest. Thenafter, It ends with Acceptance, Respect and above all else Family
