  • “Cricket ruined her chances at love”. I love how the movie makes you feel that because the matchmaker scene was so sad. But then you realize that the Cricked was actually lucky because it helped Mulan avoid an arranged marriage and go fullfil her destiny (plus meet Li shang).

    @sandrah6393@sandrah6393 Жыл бұрын
    • True. That cricket basically controlled the whole film. The cricket is the reason the match-making session failed and he's the reason Mushu decided to help Mulan. He truly was lucky.

  • During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.

    • I don't think any other movie, anywhere, has ever done a better job showing the real cost of war than Mulan did just in those 2-3 minutes when they found the burnt out village and the slaughtered army. It was both genre-appropriate and child-appropriate, but at the same time, it's so deadly serious about what war really is, and what it means. All the gratuitous blood and gore in the world could never have half as much impact as Mulan finding that little doll in the snow -- and then leaving it at the base of the sword Li Shang left for his father, the perfect tribute to the people he died defending. It didn't need to be graphic to have impact. In fact, I think sometimes the blood and gore actually go too far, to the point where they trivialize violence by turning it into nothing but a gross-out fest. There are a lot of creators today who could learn a lot from how Mulan did it.

  • Actually, the emperor's gift to Mulan at the end is very symbolic. The medallion is proof of honor and acceptance that was given to her by the Emperor while Shan Yu's sword is proof of her accomplishments that the emperor acknowledges. Thereby symbolizing the "greatest" honor that she did for country: Duty and sacrifice. But to her father, none of that mattered. The greatest honor for her family (in his viewpoint) was having their daughter comeback home safely.

  • I think there's a structural misunderstanding here. Dylan believes the group (dragon and cricket) are supposed to protect Mulan specifically, but in reality the dragon is sent to protect the family's honour. Not to keep Mulan from dying. He's there to keep them from knowing she's a girl. If she died in battle, that would be more honouring.

    @dannic54@dannic543 жыл бұрын
    • Well…technically… the ancestors expect the family’s honor to be protected by Milan being dragged home ASAP; getting killed would be an easy way to be discovered and bring shame on the family. But Mushu plans to go beyond that and make her a war hero for himself, to prove to the ancestors how great he is and earn back his place. Luckily for him, Mulan actually is a hero…

There is even a word a Hun leader said about this: "l'm your leader and she is my leader " Basically even though they are portrayed as villains in this one, you would be more lucky if you were a Hun in those times rather than Chinese.

  • 12:09 Mulan’s fake name in Cantonese is actually a pun. “Ping” means “pot” and her family’s name is “Fa” which means “flower” so put together, Fa Ping literally means Flower Pot. The pun in this is that the word “flowerpot” is an insult used to describe an effeminate gay male. It also means “eye candy” but in the sense that the person is literally too pretty to do anything of any worth whatsoever. A few years ago I saw and heard the word “fapping” in Fa Ping and couldn’t get it out of my head. The movie came out before the word “fap” was created so obvs there’s no inspiration there, but given the “manly urges” Fa Ping gets I think it’s still a funny joke.

Especially the fapping one lol About the Ping tho, it never cross my mind that Mulan would use the word Ping 瓶(pot) instead of this Ping 平(Peace/Even) since it's not a common word for names. But the joke still stands because the Chinese also have word plays on words that sounds the same but has different meanings.
