  • There is one single shot that shook me more than any other in the entire movie... during the final retelling of the grandmother's story, the look of absolute and utter loss and grief on her face when Pedro was killed. • That grieving moment speaks volumes for colombian identity, and i can´t believe they actually addressed it on an animated movie located in Colombia, on a subtle yet honest and respectful way. More than the music and the food and the expressions, the history through loss and grief but the courage to endure is a great defining trait of colombian people.

    • I noticed that and it makes me cry more, as much as I personally relate to Luisa (and multiple other characters) she reminds me of my oldest sister. My oldest sister is more like a mom to me, and sometimes I feel guilty for that. She’s only five years older than me. And when I was 8 we went from 4 kids to 8, her being the oldest. She took care of so much. And she still feels like she can’t open up about it. And now she’s still being a caretaker. She’s housing my aunt who has cancer who has guardianship of our 7 year old cousin. She’s literally a parent right now to this little girl because she has to be. She’s coparenting with my cousin who’s a little older than my sister but they’ve grown up together and live together and it’s her mom that’s staying with them. And this 7 year old girl is troubled. She’s great, I would adopt her in a heartbeat. But she’s vulgar. She knows more than she should and doesn’t understand. She needs a lot of help. She’s inappropriate. But also sweet. We all love her so much. But my sister is always taking on these burdens. She’s always a mom when she never had kids! I think this movie is great at introducing the absolute complexity of having a large family and being one of the oldest. I wish I could help her more.

  • I’m fully in the “Mirabel will take Abuela’s place as head of the family” camp. At the beginning when the house first came to life it waved at Abuela. When they fixed it, it waved at Mirabel.

    @thunderdome89@thunderdome892 жыл бұрын
    • I agree, but with one caveat: Mirabel at the start of the film is ALREADY the focus/carrier of the family's magic, she just doesn't realize it until the very end. Throughout the film, the cracks and damage to the house and the fluctuating powers always reflect Mirabel's troubled moods and emotions, not Abuela's. It's her devastation at Abuela's rejection that fully breaks the spell, and the open love and acceptance of her family at the final door opening that finally heals it.

  • As a fellow Hispanic, this film hits on so many cultural experiences that brought me to tears. Specifically, the confrontation that Mirabel has with Abuela at the end of the second act, and the heart-shattering realization that nothing she can do will ever be enough. Also, the quickness with which families disown and discard members that are portrayed as pariahs for not abiding some false narrative the family perpetuates. So much potent generational trauma, and this movie navigates it expertly. Hence why I love Mirabel and Bruno so darn much. This movie means the world to me.

  • Mirabel doesn't get her own room. Each room is specifically designed around the person's gift and Casita doesn't have any power inside those rooms but Mirabel's gift is Casita itself. It breaks when she's breaking, it heals when she's healing. Just like Louisa's power wane based on her self-worth, Casita's state is based around Mirabel's. She can't have a room inside Casita because Casita is her room, it's also why her door vanished; it was the front door and you can't have the front door inside the house. That's why if you look at the front door when it appears at the end it has everyone on it but not all together. Mirabel is in front of everyone and her image is glowing. It's her door, the reason everyone is on it is because that's what her gift is based around. Louisa felt the need to be strong so she got strength, Antonio loved animals so he could communicate with them; Mirabel only ever wanted to support and be supported by her family so her gift is the Casita that does exactly that.

    @rpottage@rpottage2 жыл бұрын
    • I have a theory, since the miracle dying is Abuela's fault, that Abuela is to blame for Mirabel not getting her gift. Abuela became too focused on the miracle itself and holding the family to expectations to "earn" their gifts and be of use. I think when Camillo got his gift of shape-shifting Abuela might have thought "how is this useful?" so a few months later when it was Mirabel's turn she was focused on hoping Mirabel gets a "good" gift that would be useful. That she would "make her family proud." Like you see in the flashback when she gets to Mirabel's door she says she "forgot who the miracle was for." Also why Antonio got his gift, I think, is A. Abuela was just hoping it would work and he would get a gift, and wasn't thinking about if it would be "useful" or not. and B. Mirabel was there. She was there for him, supporting him, and expecting nothing from him except a "gift as amazing as he is" and he would enjoy. She literally walks him to his door. So if the miracle is based on family connection, Mirabel being there was enough for Antonio to get his gift. Also if she is Abuela's successor she would've fulfilled that role of the ritual, without realizing it.

      @fightingfaerie@fightingfaerie2 жыл бұрын
    • @@fightingfaerie yes, this! and once Antonio gets his gift you can even hear Abuela say "I'm sure we'll find a way to put his gift to good use", already thinking of how it could benefit the community and totally disregarding the childish wonder with which Antonop accepts his gift. It's true that once a gift turns into a responsibility, it becomes a burden instead, especially if that responsibility has been forced upon you. One more thing i also noticed, when the house was cracking big time and everyone was fumbling to get to the candle, all the grandkids employed their powers to get to it faster (Camilo shapeshifting into a taller man and Isabela shooting out vines and ropes) but the only one who actually got to the candle in the nick of time was Mirabel, because she asked casita for help. Through the movie, she's the only one comfortable enough to ask for help and relying on her family (asking Luisa to tell her what she's nervous about, Dolores about what she heard, using Antonio's room to see Bruno's vision, trying to make amends with Isabela to hug etc) and in doing so she not only helps herself, but also those around her. That's why casita helped only her to save the miracle, sometimes in helping others we can finally see our own worth and by giving advice, we can make us see our own struggles clearer.❤

For 70 years, our communities have been displaced by violence and wars (and it still happens 'til this very day) and a lot of our ancestors were murdered, and despite all of that, we kept fighting to survive. A fun fact is that the place where Mirabel and Abuela bonded actually exists in Colombia, it's called Caño Cristales, it's a river that has seven colors in it, a lot of families and communities were there while running for their lives. It is understandable that they thought he betrayed them in some way, and that is why, though they probably missed him, they were all so angry at him and that is how they dealt with their grief by refusing to talk about him except in the odd angry outburst. The minute you see Aunt Peppa and the look on her face when she sees Bruno again, you know she really wasn't all that mad at him ever because she is the first to run to and embrace him. Like Pepa’s side wears yellow, Bruno wears green, Abuela is this magenta burgundy color and Julieta’s side is teal and blue but Isabela was this bright purple pink until the end. In addition to this Mirabels skirt is her main family’s color but she covers her clothes in everyone elses color with embroidery. Mirabel is trying so hard to fit in and Isabela is trying so hard to stand out and been seen as perfect until the end. Also Dolores has a lot of red in her outfit a color associated with love. Her treatment as falling into an awkward spot in her family that leads her to getting overlooked or dismissed or forgotten about is similar in some ways to how I fall in my family: too American for the German side, too American for the Colombian side, and a 6th wheel when I visit my dad and stepmom and their family (separated parents deal). I love them, and I know they love me, but sometimes it can feel like you just don’t belong and working through that to grow closer to your family is an ever changing and ever lasting task but can be so rewarding in the end. Also Encanto is the only movie that made me laugh, then cry, then laugh, then cry back to back like that within the first 10-15 minutes when I first saw it. That definitely means something at least.

Her gift is basically being the soul of the family, and she's so connected with the house. More so than Abuela ever was. And speaking of Abuela. I understand that she felt pressure, etc. But I'm not ready to forgive her for her behaviour. She literally ostracised Mirabel for not being "special". To the point where she's not in any of the family pictures. No wonder the house decided to fall apart. The magic was a gift for her family, but she took it for granted and put way too much pressure on everyone to deserve it. Just think how, if any of them had been allowed to be vulnerable, they would have a proper grip on it. The parallels between Elsa trying to suppress her ice magic and Pepa doing the same with her "clear skies". This movie is amazing! And while I can sympathise with her trauma, Abuela does not deserve to be let off the hook. Emotionally abusing your family because you're afraid to lose control of your sense of perfection is not okay

Telling her she was the reason the house and the family were breaking was good, telling her she was also the reason the family and the town were saved was also good. Calling the bad behavior but also the accomplishments made Alma a better person. Remember, she is still the Matriarch, and the family isn't ready to be without her. Alma went to the river for the first time since her husband died and accepted that it was time to let her pain and anxiety go away and to see how much her children and grandchildren loved her and that they were going to be alright, without powers. Maybe you're not ready to forgive the people who hurt you (I haven't either) but nothing is black or white. ps: she's not in the family picture because Mirabel didn't want it, not because of Abuela. The milagro was created by Abuela, she's the keeper and the next one is Mirabel. Abuela never pressured her family to deserve it, she pressured them to be perfect and do whatever it takes for the family and town. This happens a lot in immigrant families.

Dolores and Camilo have the best singing voices to me. I'm actually in love with Dolores and her voice. I like that she sang "Do you understand?" like she was trying to get Mirabel to understand Bruno wasn't a bad guy. This movie has so many layers to it and every reactor sees or understands something else that I never thought of and you certainly did so I'm always happy to watch these. I kind of always thought that Mirabel is the next Abuela. She will be the head of the family. Abuela has an affinity with the house and no other magical powers. She opened the door the first time. That was her door. And now, as we see Mirabel turned the doorknob and the front door lit up. The front door is her door, that's why the room door disappeared. Her room is the whole house. Maybe that's just me. But I'm just thinking of when Mirabel was 5 or 6 and standing at the door that disappeared and no one understood yet the meaning behind it...I'm thinking of the aftermath which we didn't get to see. How heartbroken she must have been, how scared and alone she felt, how hard she must have cried, how embarrassed she must have felt...man, Mirabel is a goddamn miracle for being so positive and so sweet to little Antonio and trying to help out her family all the time.

I feel like had this movie been made even just a couple of decades ago the Abuella would have been motivated by trying to preserve the family's power, status or wealth. But here she acknowledges that she received a miracle and talks about serving her community and working to be worthy of that miracle. It shows that even with the best of intentions, it can be important to acknowledge when you need to rest (Luisa), know what it is that you want to do and what you don't want to do and find a way to do good while not ignoring your own desires (Isabella) and that you can admire those around you and appreciate their strengths without having to put them on a pedestal and while still being able to empathize with them and recognize that there are times when even someone you admire will need your help and they may not even realize it themselves (Mirabela).

  • One of my favorite details is that when Abuela described Abuelo’s death at the beginning, she didn’t show her being that that upset on the outside but at the end she is in so much visible pain. Abuela also felt the need to repress her emotions as well and that’s what’s heartbreaking because being vulnerable is what kept the miracle alive. I didn’t think we really saw Julieta or Camilo being vulnerable/repressing their emotions and I wish we got to see that just to understand them better but I still love this movie so much despite that. Another Easter egg is that in we don’t talk about Bruno when they’re all singing at once, the volume people are singing at is due to whether they’re telling the truth. Like the hurricane was probably exaggerated so it was louder. But like Delores is hard to hear the whole time except for when saying betrothed to another (because it wasn’t permanently betrothed) and when she and Isabella say “I’m fine” over and over because they really aren’t

  • This movie has layers on layers. I loved how they did the moms food heals, because we all have that comfort food from childhood that we go to when we are sick or hurting. If you listen to the Abuela at the beginning of the movie they all got powers to help the family, so Mirabel didn't need a power to do just that. If you Pay attention you see it was only Abuela and Mirabel that talked to the house the whole movie. That's why she didn't need a room (though the house should have given her a room) the whole house was her room. You should go back and watch the story of Abuela was telling Mirabel with the song on subtitles the words are just beautiful.

  • Mirabel is the candle. It was the candle that brought magic and miracle to the house the first time with Abuela .. And in absence of the candle, Mirabel, the human candle fixes it.The whole house is her room. And The reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because she is the gift.

  • I prefer the theory that the Casita itself is both Alma's and Mirabel's gift, since they are the only ones who show any modicum of control over it and it works with their respective roles holding the family together.

  • this movie is probably my favorite newer disney movie. I remember when there was first a teaser for it because my friend, who is Columbian, was really hyped about it. And we're both art nerds and the animation was just so beautiful like disney never lacks in that category. I especially loved the imagery during mirabel's song, it reminded me a lot of into the unknown from frozen 2. Also Lin Manuel Miranda is a god. Tbh i wasn't a total fan of his other works w/ disney for Moana but he really blew this one out of the park with the songs. And then he directed tick tick boom, like just straight up god

  • It's was so nice to watch your reaction! As a colombian I know there're a lot of little details that represented the diverse regional cultural roots of my country. Of course not all of them came through, but most of them did and that's one of the reasons I love this movie. One of them has to do with the tones of the clothing in the Madrigal sisters, their partners, and children: if you look carefully, the Pepa's part of the family is dressed in warm tones, and the Julieta's part in colder ones. That represents the culture of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts (Pepa's family) in one hand, and the culture of the highlands and mountains in the other (Julieta's part of the family). That's why Bruno was so important: he's the future, and is dressed in green: the combination of both cultures. PS: I also cried my eyes out watching the movie, you're not alone.

  • I have a theory about that where I feel like the reason why she didn't get a gift at that time is not because he was an awesome person but I feel like her gift was essentially bringing to family together and then in a sense becoming candle / miracle itself and that the miracle now lives through her.

  • Loved how you kinda guessed the plot from the beginning. The 2 oruguitas scene really hit me in the guts with that reference to the 'disappeared' people of the many dictatorships we had here in Latino América. It's a fate worse than death cause their families doesn't have a body to cry on or even know if they're dead at all.

  • I LOVE how they show the generational trauma from both sides! Love it with a passion! So important to see both sides of it. And of course it works because the abuela *and* the rest of the family see each other and lets go of the trauma (or at least they begin to do so). As a person who's grandfather was killed in a concentration camp during WWII for his political convictions, I know how trauma trickles down... and how important it has been for me to see that, to begin my own healing. And how in some cases healing my own trauma heals the family trauma too... but it's easier to do so, if the family is willing to acknowledge the trauma too 😉❤🌟
