Historian and broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo appeared on SKY News to debate English patriotism amidst reports that many on the Left view the English flag as racist or offensive.

Some Scots may believe that English should freely celebrate being English. As a Scot I joined the British Army serving in the Scots Guards. I was based in and around London throughout my service and lived in England for years after I left the army. I now live in Scotland. My experience is many many Scots most of whom have never been to England have been conditioned to hate the english. Call it zenephobia, call it prejudice or call it ignorance but don't make the generalisation that 'We Scots' believe the English should freely celebrate being English.

I am Canadian, and I love Britain and all they have done for the world. Scotland and the rest of the UK ushered in the industrial revolution which excellerated the development of the West. I am proud of my ancestors from the UK who came to Canada to escape the famine in Ireland. They were given a parcel of land and were the settlers that built Canada to what it is today. We all need to be thankful for all the progress the UK brought into the world.

I am thankful to be now living in France, where the tricolor is everywhere and Gallic culture is protected by its people and government legislation. Having lived in England, Australia, New Zealand and Italy, England is the least racist of these four countries. My 10 years living in London opened my eyes to so many cultures and races. It was one of the best things about living there, in my opinion. I lived in Hackney for most of my time in a very Caribbean and African area and it was absolutely wonderful. I don’t believe I can find this rich melting pot of cultures and races anywhere else living harmoniously as I did in my time in England. I will remember it fondly for the rest of my life. ❤

I agree with Rafe. We should be proud to be English rather than feel embarrassed to confess it. We should fly the flag everywhere and with courage and pride.
