I know using the Windows API, there are a lot of odd limits on controls and such. Even in 64 bit, Windows is using 32-bit IDs (not that 4 billion shouldn't be enough), but you often get odd limits such as 16k items in lists (hold overs from Win16 APIs) or odd things such as the X,Y coordinates of the ScreenToClient() can't exceed 16k, so a grid control might be fine with say 1,000 x 1,000 but it isn't fine with 200 rows x 5,000 columns. I've also run into if you hide tabs, it does linear searches so even though only 4 tabs are visible, it fires off events to the 1,000 hidden ones.

My PC only has 16GB ram and the OS is using maybe 3-4 usually. yet I've had open over 300+ tabs at one point. Many windows. It does use a lot of ram. but I'm impressed I never had any real issues. My problem is I'll open so many things and not take the time to finish what I started. - I believe there is an extension to save all your tabs. I think it was Session Buddy. Honestly I kinda wish it just said "You cannot open any more tabs" Just to force me to tidy things up more often :D

I mean there's not that much of a load time difference between a SATA and NVMe SSD, so I don't think it would be very eventful
Another idea would be to do this same video in Linux on Chromium.
You may see some nice numbers in crystaldiskmark but with games it won't be much faster than any pcie 3 or 4 ssd. Probably margin of error stuff. Even though it's pretty fast, the OS still treats it like regular HDD so it'll juggle the data around in the memory. And same applies with the GPU.

@10:00 Every time you unfocus a window, tabs in that window change state to passive state or hidden state depending on how visible are they. And sometimes frozen or discarded for memory or cpu salvage by the page lifecycle api. My highest tab count was 500-600 chrome tabs seperated into 10-15 windows, ~300 firefox tabs in a single window, alongside 2 visual studio 2015 , +1 Jetbrains Idea runnning at the same time on a 32gb Ram Dell precision in 2015 or 2016. But back then neither chrome nor firefox was so power hungry and i was using a tab sleeping extension.
4000 here on a daily basis bro. RAM is not the issue. Firefox is a lot better with RAM than Chrome is BTW
@@jrcat2258 How do you get 4000 tabs open in Firefox without an issue? Even when I've had 32gb or even 64gb of RAM, having a firefox based browser open for more then a few days with a few hundred tabs would lead to it constantly freezing and becoming unstable.
@@MajoraZ I'm at 5000 now. I do use a Threadripper 1950x with quad channel memory. I don't think all the tabs get fully loaded and I use adblock for blocking. I also use like 5 or 6 windows.

Not daily, maybe weekly I fire up 15-20 Firefox profiles with 50-300 tabs each (~2000 total) when I organize things. 7th gen 4C Intel, 64G RAM. It works, but the system asks for some relief. Never tested for the max, and not all tabs are loaded. The session is autosaved by FF, tabs are grouped, and multirowed in 5-10 rows if someone asks. If I project this saturation level to the system in the video, it would reach around 30-40000 tabs. I'll try one day.

This kind of memory density is great for a single task that needs a ton of ram, like running a RAM disk, or doing fluid dynamics calculations or just a lot of number crunching. Not so good for being split among a ton of lightweight tasks, as your CPU won't be able to keep up

Hi, you hit the wall of the OS, HDD and CPU exactly in this order. You opened sites with multi dynamic content driven by JS and what's worse multi movie embedded objects in each site. It generated hundreds processes and thousands of threads, way beyond number of tabs has been opened. Now the quirck. Memory and process (thread) managment algorythms implemented in consumer version of the W(x) OS have a big overhead according to swiching context because it not only tries predict (in sofisticated way) which process (thread) will need resources in the near future but it also writes / reads some information to the pagefile for every each one even if there is planty of the free RAM. In addition memory ocupied by process is not linear and is spreaded by the small chunks in the heap as the way to protect system from memory injections and usage optymalistion. At least MS was thought it's gone be good idea. Task manager is another bottleneck because in the past time of the single core CPU's it could took up to 25% of the cpu. It's only top of the iceberg but in the end every consumer hardware driven by consumer version of the W(x) OS has significant troubles with efficiency when load of the CPU crosses 60% according to number of processes or threads. Do the same on any consumer Linux distro and enterprise version and you gone be suprised. :)
So, all the task switching, and internal housekeeping by the OS is not included in the CPU load percentage displayed in Task Manager?

Use an adblocker...lots of memory leaks from the ads. You will see a big cut down in RAM usage. I have 71 tabs open in Chrome only 2.2GB usage. Also firefox with 11 tabs...673MB.

I opened 80-90 without a problem at only 32GB, but that's not the problem. The problem is that after a certain number in an open browser, they no longer appear because there is no space in the bar, even with a 4K monitor.

@@jefftraboulsy8631 my guess is that the lag may have been caused by windows thread scheduler, it essentially gives running threads priority.. except with sooooooo many threads that are constantly fighting for control based on ever changing variables for each tab such as mouse over, whether the tab is on screen, when it was last the active window, etc. Its just overwhelming.. likely just one factor of many why windows couldn't cope. I hope someone other than me can comment and either confirm my theory or give a better answer

To be fair, chrome is terrible on memory with many tabs. This is also why I installed firefox for my sister, cause she never closes her tabs (last time I checked, it simply showed 100+), and yet it works flawlessly on an old laptop

It was necessary to configure chrome so that it does not allocate a separate core for each site / tab. Then the processor would have sufficed much more. It was also necessary to turn off the swap file in the system.
if os have enough ram why do you need turn off swap file? it would not be used until the ram space is exhausted
@@igorsk1133 The OS can write unused chrome memory there in advance. The system is not optimized for this amount of memory, you need to do it manually as I said.

I have a external drive with 4.5 tb my computer can run portal and half life just fine just buy external one and plug it in and change some setting to make sure it gets downloaded to they’re and your good
