  • I'll state a few missed yet obvious points though. 1- Its 475$ vs 320$ if we being fair about going 2nd hand. 2- A PC is not limited to PS5 games. While a PS5 may have a few exclusives, there are hundreds if not thousands of games playable on PC but not on a PS5... 3- A PC is not ONLY a gaming machine. You won't be editing photos from your last trip on a PS5. Last point is important why? Because if you need to buy, upgrade and maintain a PC alongside your PS5 anyway, it may only need marginally better components to match the performance of PS5.

Sure, you'll see you occasional post that claims that "there's no point in having a PC if a console costs less" (mainly from console only players either way) - but exchanging capabilities of modding, better user experience, more games available and no subscription cost for just wanting to play online and talking on a slow peer 2 peer voice chat at basically no additional cost for the manufacturer isn't exactly something that sounds too great to me. If I ever would want a console again I'd just straight up let my PC start with Steam in Big Picture mode, hook it up to my TV and have a wireless keyboard & mouse for modding stuff and adding non-steam games to the steam library. Doesn't even matter if a PC costs 400 more.

And don't forget the free games you can get often enough, I haven't paid Epic a cent but have over 300 games on my epic library with a new one (not always good) every week. As a personal example I have a game save of FFVII I've been playing since around 2001 that I've just never gotten around to beating. I started playing it on an old first gen Playstation, moved it to a PS2, got the card reader back then and move that to a PC that I played on (with horrible PS emulation, with the disk even at the time) up to around level 70 on the first disk because I'm a masochist, stopped playing for a few years and managed to port that save over to the PS3. I didn't play that save for probably 12 years or more, and last year decided to finally beat the game and got my 2001 FFVII game running perfectly on my PC using the PS3 card reader to move it over... I still haven't beaten the game but thats a fully different issue.

With my current build I spent an entire week getting my fan curves *just* right, and I enjoyed every second of it, even moreso than actually gaming on the thing. It's really hard to miss especially with stuff like ebay's buyer guarantees. Same with CPUs. If it passes a stress test and the pins are there, fine. I've bent back plenty of pins, never an issue. Never had a GPU fail or a CPU fail in my life and been building for everyone for 20 years or so. I've seen fans fail, powerplugs fail, and stuff like that on older cards, but this like reballing the core stuff and memory chip failures seem more like a 4090 or 3090 Ti problem than a mid range used card. The time needed to hunt every part and then build it is, I would imagine, not insignificant. 3, risk. so many different used parts from different sellers. decent chance something is faulty, glitchy, or even broken (yes, yes, returns, still annoying) 4, as pointed out before doom, pcs sometimes need tweaking and have issues, compatibility problems, other errors (like before RnC). You do briefly mention these things at the end, but I think it’s important to note those can be bigger issues for some people, myself included. I’ve built many PCs, with a $3,000 overkill pogger wogger gaming PC sitting in my office. I STILL have stupid ass windows errors and things that just randomly break in the OS, and I’m just tired of troubleshooting. I have to imagine it’s even worse on… that. I’m so damn happy to just sit on my couch, pick up a controller from my charging dock, and shit just works. Obviously, console gaming, over a long period can be more expensive than even a higher end PC with the online services being almost mandatory, but also you get a massive amount of free games with PS Plus at least, and good ones too (imo). anyway, I spent way too long on a comment I feel like I’ll just get shit on for. • Like others have said, your opinion here, while valid, is also subjective. I was a HUGE console gamer up to and including the Xbox 360, but I honestly switched due to something like they weren't going to allow backward compatibility or something and then later rolled back on that decision. I don't remember if that is accurate, I just remember thinking that I don't have this hassle when I want to play my pc games and didn't bother picking up another console. Most of my friends followed suit, which did make the whole thing easier as well. Some counterpoints to consider: - Computers will last through multiple console generations (assuming you aren't someone who NEEDS the ultra top of the line gigachad graphics at all times) - Once you have a good computer it isn't nearly as expensive to upgrade certain parts in the future - The peripherals work perfectly from one upgrade to the next (consoles are starting to get better with this) - The Vast majority of the time pc gamers have the same gaming experience. Outside of launch day issues, I rarely, if ever am troubleshooting issues with a game. This is also the same experience with all of my friends. This was definitely an argument that used to be relevant, but we are in a significantly better place than we were even 10-15 years ago. A few other thoughts, for me personally, it is much much more expensive to get setup on a console than just forking out even $1000 upgrading my computer. After I factor in the console, the $100 controllers x 3 and the online subscription fee, I am already almost there and I don't even have any games to play. Buy a half-dozen games and I'm well above that $1000 mark and still don't have access to the hundreds upon hundreds of games I have access to on my pc. And none of that factors in all of the other things I can and do use my pc for. Please don't also misconstrue any of this as bashing consoles, that is definitely not my intention. Some of my best gaming memories were crowded around the couch playing Halo with my friends. I just want to show how for some people, especially those of us who only have the budget for one or the other, it's not as clear cut as many say.

Downsides… Games are more expensive, but I don’t play a huge variety. It only plays games, but I have an old laptop for all my non gaming needs. It is not great if mods are needed, there is only one game where that’s a problem for me, so I just need to get good I guess 😂. Whenever I price out a new pc I always end up somewhere in the $1200 ballpark for what I’d consider a longish term rig for myself. That's not to mention if you buy a previous generation AM4 board that you might need to flash the BIOS to install 3000 and 5000 series Ryzen (if they are compatible). The same with cases in that you can't seem to get a used one for less than $50 and a new one will probably cost you $70 and up. So, even with the best prices listed I've come across, you will already be $140 into your '$500" hypothetical budget leaving $360 for everything else. $60 for a PSU, $70 for a Ryzen 5 3600X, and about $230 for a used RX 6700 and you'll be lucky to have something close to the PS5 performance. Oh, and I didn't even factor in storage, so hopefully you have a spare hard drive and RAM to put in it.

  • The total price quoted is not really realistic. Linus received the case free of charge due to signs of use. Additional costs would have to be planned for this. The shipping costs for the individual components are also not included in the $475 - nor are the costs for the operating system and peripherals. If you want to rebuild the PC, you have to plan for significantly higher costs. Buying new hardware would cost over $1,000. Not an option for most gamers The advantage of games consoles is that they are ready to use straight out of the box. Assembling a PC requires not only technical understanding, but also time, which not everyone wants to spend. As it turned out, the do-it-yourself PC was actually able to achieve a higher frame rate in some games. However, other games only ran after BIOS adjustments. It is therefore unlikely that many gamers will follow the KZheadr's example and build their own PC from used hardware instead of buying a PS5.

  • for the record I bought a configurable prebuilt with almost the exact specs (slightly worse) because I needed a new computer at the height of the GPU shortage and it was $2000 at the time. Stuff has gotten crazy cheaper, and the used market is the way to go.

I built this spec: Ryzen 3600 MSI B450 Tomahawk Max 16Gb DDR4 3200 C16 1Tb Samsung NVME (OEM model, 3000Mbps) Thermaltake S200 Snow EVGA G3 550W 80+ Gold RTX 3070 8Gb (MSI Ventus x2) Bequiet CPU cooler (unknown model, but with 92mm fan) I sold it for £450....and I made £50 profit on that.

  • I built a computer for my birthday. I got for the case Antec NX200 M, Micro-ATX Tower, Motherboard MSI A520M-A PRO Gaming Motherboard, CPU AMD Ryzen 5 4500 CPU, AGV Series 500W Power Supply, 80 Plus Bronze Certified, and TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan Z DDR4 16GB Kit. I used my M.2 from my other computer. I did not know that the CPU does not support integrated graphics so I got GIGABYTE GV-N1030D4-2GL GeForce GT 1030. It took me about 2 hours to build but it works like a champ.

  • In this scenario the benefit of the PS5 still outweighs the PC (only in this specific scenario) imo, the PS5 you get a warranty + brand new parts, this PC is 2nd hand with no warranty and requires much more manual setup as opposed to working out the box + as you said, the controller included in the price of the PS5 also, and if you were going to go down the 2nd hand route, PS5 consoles have dropped to around £400 in the UK at least compared to the £500 new.

    • I’d argue that the PC is better. Sure there’s no warranty, but you don’t really want a warranty on a custom PC anyways. The biggest upside of PC is its modularity. A PC like this isn’t the finish line; it’s a starting point that you can iterate upon for the foreseeable future. Only change I’d make is I’d get the B650 motherboard, as they’re a bit more involved to upgrade than other components.

    • Make sure that your ram is installed in the 2nd and 4th slots (1 being the closest to the CPU, 4 being the furthest) If it's unstable then, you can maybe RMA the ram/motherboard If you can't/don't want to bother, increase the voltage on the ram (up to 1.4v is very safe, up to 1.45 is generally recognized as a safe limit)

      @Vyruis@Vyruis2 ай бұрын
  • Consoles kept their value proposition not because how great the consoles are (which they are either way!), but because the PC hardware prices went through the roof in the meantime. A PC in the same performance class 5 years ago with brand new hardware would have been at roughly $400. CPU: Ryzen 5 1600AF: ~$90 GPU: Radeon RX 580 8GB: ~$150 at the time MOBO: $60 16GB RAM: $80 PSU: $60 Case: $40 (not included in the video) I also think Linus made this video just a bit too early. Prices are starting to go down almost across the board, so in just a couple months time it could have been that he'd been able to do this at a better price point (as in, case and/or controller included for the $500) or with somewhat better hardware.

I had a case and a PSU to start with and bought a B550m board with one 16gb ram chip and R5 5500 cpu with an RX 560 gpu and a 256gb nvme drive. but.. after I bought some VR goggles and found my basic system didn't cut it.. i bought another nvme drive, another 16gb ram and an RTX 4060ti 16gb gpu. my final upgrade will be to a R7 5800x3d cpu and then my final total cost will end up around the $2k mark lol. if i were building the same MID RANGE gaming pc today on an AM5 socket and ddr5 ram i would be looking at a final cost of closer to $3k.
