Broken German WW2 Lighter Restoration

Restoration of a very rare German lighter from World War 2. This lighter had been in the ground for over 70 years. Watch as I restore this 70+ year old war relic into something awesome.
I bought lot of old lighters from auction for restoration. The lighters are missing parts, have dents and some rust and oxidation. I'm sure I'll be able to restore at least some of them.
The lighter has 3 parts. The lighter itself, a tank for extra lighter fluid and a cap. I have no idea what the brand on it is.
After getting the shell of the lighter back to orginal shape I sanded it flat because there is only so much you can do to dents on metal. The dents often stretch the metal so that I can't be only hammered back to the orginal shape. I However I got it close enough to just sand off the tiny unevenness. This was important because mirror finish will reveal the slightest bumps.
After sanding I polished it by wet sanding and polishing compound. This resulted to perfect mirror polish. I loaned one spare parts from the other lighters I bought.
I also also changed the old wick to a Zippo wick which was the same size and the only option locally available. I also put is a Zippo flint. After this the lighter worked perfectly.
Thanks for watching my channel. See you soon.
Best wishes and stay safe.

  • I do not even smoke. I cannot even stand the smell of someone who has smoked in the last hour. I would completely pay good money for something like this, just so I could light people's cigarettes for them. That was some amazing work. B E A U T I F U L.

    • That design was very popular in several countries during that era. There's also an interesting story. Austria was the Mecca of lighters back then. They had a comparable design to this but without the liquid tank, they called it "Hurricane". A man named George Grant Blaisdell and his friend were meeting during a summer night in 1932. His friend put a "Hurricane" out of his pocket and lit up a cigarette. Blaisdell asked him why he's is using this ugly lighter instead of a more beautiful representative one that fits his neat outfits he always wears. The answer was: This one here always works! Blaisdell was impressed, and he started his own company and sold these lighters in the US, also purchased the patent from the Austrians and he changed the design by connecting the cap and the body with a hinge. He named it "Zippo", because he liked the sound of the word "zipper". That Tommy lighter design was actually quite popular here in Germany. I have one that was probably made in 1950s or 60s, it's tank base is made of brass, but the tank itself is made of clear plastic so you can also see how much petrol is still in it.

  • How do you know that was a lighter from WW2?.. Did the Germans have lighters issued to them by the Army?I don't think so.Also I didn't see any markings on it at all. Anyways it was in pretty good shape for being that old.I wouldn't think it was dug up.

    • From long lying in the ground, brass became thin and brittle. With copper, I increased the thickness of the metal. I also smoothed out all the bumps.

This is a video.....we see what the object is! there's no need to turn it over and around and back again! Spend more time actually restoring it. By the way....cute little anvil ya got there! :)
