PESKY PINZGAUER: Cranky Vintage 4x4 Military Truck at Hagar's South Lake Tahoe Garage | EP19

2022 ж. 16 Жел.
267 235 Рет қаралды

With its finicky 5-speed manual gearbox, this 1972 Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710K vintage 4x4 military truck proves challenging. This Pinzgauer is an ex-Swiss military, Austrian-made all-terrain, radio communications utility vehicle that is surprisingly capable off-road with its underpowered inline 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual gearbox, hydraulic lockers, portal axles, and exceptional torque. Nicole meets up with talented friend Aaron Hagar at his Rat Runners Garage in South Lake Tahoe and travels a rocky trail high above the pines.
MORE ABOUT AARON S. HAGAR:
The first-born son of rock legend Sammy Hagar, Aaron grew up with loud music, fast cars, and KICKER sound systems. Aaron is an accomplished artist and positive inspiration who resides in South Lake Tahoe, California, with his wife, Misha, and their French Bulldog, Pesto. His Rat Runners Garage embraces the art of preserving and resurrecting old metal.

    • Aaron! It was MY honor to hang with you in your garage. To anyone who's reading this, please know it took 2 years for this shoot to become a reality. Tahoe is always under a fire evacuation order or 10 feet of snow!!!!! What a neat experience I won't forget!!! Plus I got to sneak the Morgan and a Porsche (hiding from our cameras) out for little fun, too! Misha and Pesto were great supporters and good sports, too. Love to your family, Aaron!

    • Aaron, I noticed a discussion about the drum brake performance on the Pinzgauer. After a fair bit of use, brakes can actually become cocked sideways in the drums. We had that issue with the rear drums on our first work tipper. I suggest that you have your brake mechanisms and drums thoroughly inspected, given that there appears to be a stopping issue with a light load. The longer you leave it, the more they have to machine the drums, which equals more dollars out of your pocket.

    • @@michaelguerin56 you are exactly right!! Thank you. It has a wheel cylinder leak in the right front. I keep honing it out and it’s fine for awhile and stops perfectly. Then it starts to leak again. It’s been pesky for 15 years. I used to rebuild it. Now I just hone it out. I need to just replace the damn thing and call it a day. That’s all it was. But I have heard of what you are talking about!! Nasty problem!! Thank you!!

  • I drove these in the swiss army. The best feature: you can just use the bottle opener of the army knife and wiggle it around in the key hole to get it started. Great for a quick hop to get some take-away without signing out the keys when the food at the base is particularly bad. 😁

    • @@aaronshagarI also rode Pinzgauers a lot during my time in the Austrian Army; we used it as reconnaissance vehicle with a machine gun mounted at the roll-over bar and a Carl Gustav anti tank weapon on board. The Austrian Army still uses these vehicles a lot, even the version with petrol engines (like yours; later versions had a VW diesel engine).

  • The 2 axle Pinzgauer is the most capable 4x4 - I drove it and the 6x6 (leave springs for the two rear axles) version for more than 10 years as an officer in the Austrian armed forces! It is not "underpowered" it just follows a different school! With good gearing even a less hp-engine will get you to places where others more powerful can not reach. I remember in 1980 while with the U.N. peace forces on the Golan Hights, Syria we were snowed in for days! A M113 APC could not drive the road up to my observation post! A Pinzgauer with snow-gains made it no problem!

    • Do you know what? I stand corrected! You are absolutely right 👊😉 it is not underpowered. We say that with many vintage vehicles, but the reality is that our road standards have just increased and these vehicles seem underpowered by modern standards. I drive it locally, and it is not underpowered. It performs amazingly, especially off-road and far more capable than even most modern trucks in my opinion. Built to withstand the test of time and battle. It is a true soldier of the world and its demands. Well done Georg and thank you so much for the insight and for watching. Cheers my good man.

Then later he pulled an F-150 stuck up to the axels in sand;. 4 wheel low and both diffs locked and he pulled him out like it was nothing. I also feel a kinship with you and Mr. Hager being alcohol and drug free. Not that many of us.

  • Loving the British influence of classic metal, from the 110 outside, to the Minis, the Triumph, the Morgan etc etc. And also some great euro metal influence such as the Microcars outside and of course this wonderful Pinzgauer, such a capable vehicle. I know Hager said he doesn’t drink, each to their own, but the only thing that garage now needs is a real ale pump (I’m British) and an old, tattered leather armchair to admire all those treasures from. Perfect. 👍

Given your background you probably do, but if not I think it would appeal). Amongst the handful of vehicles we’re considering is the Pinzy. As ex British military I’ve had a lot of fun in them, so thought it would be an option for Saudi. But starting at 30k€ (super trendy and sought after in Europe/UK) before any FIA modifications means we might have to pass. But good to see one in action and a four-wheeled variant to boot. Keep up the good work.

  • I did not doubt that you would keep your word. Thanks! Many episodes ago i suggested trying out a Pinzgauer and you answered that there would be a video comming at some point. As you didn't need the lockers (which you can use on the fly and don't have to stop to engage) it seems you haven't challenged the vehicle much on camera but i hope you had as much fun as it looked like! (the old testdrivers at Steyr are quoted to have said something like "the only thing that stops a Pinzgauer is the fear of the driver" but i can attest that a little over 1meter of snow uphill can too, despite the use of snowchains 😂) I did not expect the gearbox to present such a challenge, as our drivers never complained about that. (but they did about the heating though...a lot😁) I never drove one myself, but spent quite some time as a passenger in the ones with he soft top during my service. (both 4x4 and 6x6) Most of our drivers were normal conscripts who had their civilian drivers license for not even one year at the start of their service. (The civilian one doesn't count in our military, it requires drivers to make a dedicated military one to be allowed to drive a mil vehicle and they do a little offroad driving as part of it too) Impressive pushup ability shown at the end, with elegance and precision! Fits the military use of the vehicle too i'd say: "Falling down for 20" is something that has happened a lot where these vehicles have been used. At least here in austria during my time, when a conscript did something wrong, that was one way of getting us to remember to not make the same mistake again. (Or when we answered _yes_ to the question "are you cold soldier?" with the reasoning "every soldier has his own heating system built in"...) Not sure if that's still practiced, but at least it was back then. (almost 23 years ago) Depending on where one made the mistake it could mean doing them in full gear, with backpack and helmet on and the rifle laying on the back of your hands. This then also meant the spacing of the hands was given by the length of the distance between buttstock and forward grip (the steyr aug is a rather short rifle) ->Hands best not moving much so the rifle doesn't fall/slip off, and only the ones where the rifle was on the hands and the chest touched the rifle counted. This comment gets too long already but i have to mention two more memory snippets: I have been in a Pinzgauer with an NCO at the wheel using a "shortcut" that turned out to be a mountain bike trail (against my advice as the navigator, but we came out fine), and the next day he decided to use a horse riding trail...🤪 (we soldiers had to help a little at one point...i mean who would have imagined that the Pinzi is wider than a horse... of course we did, but we weren't in command 😉) Greetings from the surroundings of Graz! 👋🫡 (where the Pinzgauer the Haflinger came from, and the Mercedes G still does to this day.)

    • OMG this is awesome!!!! THANK YOU!! What great story and information!!! You are so right. I think the challenges of the transmission and shift pattern is that 1 o’clock offset input! It is not unusual in a lot of 60’s and 70’s European transmissions, but most unusual in American vehicles. I have driven some very unusual configurations and yet this one gets me when not rehearsed most often!! 😂😂😂 But what a delight! I have a nice added perspective and experience in the Pinz!! I will hear your words when I drive it next I assure you!!! A wonderful addition and I am very grateful! I have NEVER used the chains in the 16 years of ownership!! I have had to get a running start in deep snow and have driven it hard and YES, the only thing the Pinz can’t do is what the driver isn’t willing to try!! Ha ha ha! Indeed!! We took it through a bit of challenge that day and the ground was full of silt and a bit slippery so we did have front and rear much of the time on the steep rocky slopes! • Hey Nicole, this is not a race car, so you don't heel and toe! It has a hand brake (emergency brake) for that purpose. I did my apprentice ship at a Swiss military maintenance plant. I drove Pinzgauers all the time. You can actually go pretty fast (for a Pinzgauer) around bends, just never let off the gas! We even engaged each diif locks in the middle of a turn, which caused some surprising actions...The shifter is rubbery because the shift linkage is like 4 feet long and has a big bend in it. But with a little bit of feel (pond intended!) it's easy! It has nothing to do with the trans being off-set. And you look very cute in your Christmasy look! As always I enjoyed your video and your down to earth attitude! Oh and there is a 6x6 version which is even more capable! You got to try one of those. With 6 chains they can follow any tank in the mud!

    • @@aaronshagar its a pleasure to see other Pinzgauer crazy people! And of course, I'm honored, that you're sharing it with me. Nicole probably got confused by the dual carbs and thought it's a race car 🙂 Which I think is the only thing that needs to be upgraded. Those carburetors were always out of sync! Make sure your shifter linkage tube is reinforced with a plate in the 90 deg bend and is not cracked. All Swiss Pinz should have been upgraded, but it's worth checking. When you try the diff lock prank, make sure you have some room. The radio pinz were worse to drive than any other model because they were so heavy and all the heavy radio equipment was installed high up as well. Luckily you don't have all that equipment in it anymore. I also thought they had heavier springs installed, but not sure anymore. • I have a 710M, I learned to drive on manual gears and drove all my life on gear transmissions, I can relate to your frustration with the transmission! My biggest beef with this transmission has always be to put it in reverse! Then an old trucker, week-end racer showed me to "double clutch". Now I get it in reverse usually on first try :) (not always!) Yes these guys are peculiar and temperamental, but they are the most fun vehicle I drove! And I went far in the Quebec Labrador toundra where "road" is just a concept! That was a great episode! THank you

  • For some reason I tend to see a lot of these Pinzgauer trucks up here in Canada, I've heard guys like them for elk hunting in the mountains so they have some protection from Mountain Lions. I've only had the pleasure of driving one on a parking lot many years ago at a Boat & Sportsman Show in Edmonton AB. You really have to trust that torque and just remove your foot from the clutch and not feather it. They are truly unique vehicles, I wouldn't mind a "K" in my yard for you know, reasons.

  • When I went to high school we were one of the only schools in Northern California with an auto shop class, and the teacher was an old war vet and he owned one of these Pinzgaeurs. He drove it almost every day and let us kids check it out and use it to ferry parts around for the rich kids whose dad’s were actually giving their kids money to build their cars. It smelled like pure nicotine cause the old man smoked cigarettes like no tomorrow. That same teacher gave me my first taste of my high school dream car, his son’s or nephew’s STi hatchback that he brought in and we did transmission work on much to my glee. So yea, what’s an obscure military truck to most people holds lots of fond memories to me. Hope my ole shop teacher (forgot his exact name, it was Mr. Chris Van ____) is alive and well and up to something good these days as they shut down the SRVHS auto shop to turn into some other BS extracurricular a while back.

Donn geht da zwote Gong eini oida. Danoch Fuigas. ( Translate) If you want to change in the second gear you need to stir it like a noodle soup. Then i you can change gear.
