Thanks to Carparts.com for sponsoring today's episode! Get all the parts you need to get your car running great at bit.ly/RightPartsRightPrice
Hydrodipping is supposed to be easy right? people do it to shoes, guitars and airsoft guns all the time, but can you dip car parts? Zach Jobe is joined by Justin Freeman to try out two different methods of Hydrodipping, and along the way they learn a bunch of ways how not to hydrodip, and maybe one way to hydrodip? see what parts work, what parts dont, and how to dip like a pro.

  • I like how in the end, no matter how good or how bad the part looks, you install it anyways because that's the whole point of DIY: To take pride and feel good about the effort you just put into something.

    @ninjaguysith@ninjaguysith2 жыл бұрын
  • Definitely one thing to consider for diy is staying away from rigid patterns. With the camo, a tiny air bubble wouldn't be noticable, but with the carbon fiber pattern, you see every inconsistency

  • I know I'm a little late to the party, but I've done a decent amount of swirl painting, which is similar to the spray paint method shown here. I've found that paints made specifically for swirl painting work much better than anything else (especially spray paint). There's brands like Magic Marble that I've used and had great success with, since I enjoy the randomness and one-of-a-kind nature of swirl painting over the pre-determined pattern of hydro dipping.

  • I feel like more detailed hydrodip work with specific patterns and designs is best left to the professionals, but if you're just wanting to change up the colour of whatever you're planning to dip DIY works just fine

      @DankoleClouds@DankoleClouds2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Gazmus it depends on what parts you're trying to change the colour of really. Spraying something like a steering wheel wouldn't necessarily be as ideal as dipping because the prepping process for painting involves creating a coarse/textured surface for the paint to adhere to which is more difficult to achieve on something like a leather or faux leather surface. So ultimately it really would depend on what parts you're trying to do

I do a lot of dipping using over the counter spray paint and I promise it's simply just a matter of better usage of color and using less paint not more. That's it. You can also hide any mistakes in hydro dip[ping with use of cheap airbrush tricks and clear coat.

  • As someone who did this for a living for 7 years. I can say that this is not easy. It's not cheap to set up and you really need to be able to paint first. It's an art and you're paying for an artist. 😉

    • Really they showed the film kit only costs 60 bucks. So once you get a bucket big enough and tape... there's a reason they rated both methods fairly cheap.

      @rollerskdude@rollerskdude2 жыл бұрын
    • it's probably not cheap for a commercial setup but it's not that expensive for a diy setup either. also, calling it an art is a huge stretch. it takes technique but definitely not artistry.

    • it's not THAT difficult. you can get pretty good at it after like.. 5 attempts if you have quality materials

    • To each their own I guess. I made a good living doing what other people couldn't. I still call it an art. Most of my clients called it an art too. We'll agree to disagree on that point ;)

    • @@just-another-guy no offense, but it's not art. It's a skill, but you are not creating art, you are putting a film that has a design onto a part

  • I really enjoyed seeing this and how OKish on the difficulty the DIY method is. Fair to say as one gets experienced with the films, this could turn into a legit looking results that'll make your ride...or at least accessories be a key (ha) topic in conversations. Shoot I'll give it go during the summer

  • I've been a Vinyl wrap installer for 10 year's so I know specialty stuff like this is always harder than it looks. People always think my job is easy until they try to wrap something themselves 😂. I've always wanted to learn how to do this.

  • Same happens with powder coating. Over my 20 years if fixed so many diy jobs. I always give great deals for people just trying to do it. Most get it close to right but the difference usually is prep work on the substrate.

  • I love the should you DIY or should you don’t, everyone starts at the bottom. The first time I wrapped something it wasn’t great but I learned and am getting better. I’m about to try hydro dipping too and ima work at it until I get good cus the pros started out that way too

  • The hilarity and utility is high. Personality is going to totally nail it, I think there's room to branch but maybe more detail on why pipes are useful to you, there are a lot of details I've learned smoking that I think are useful and you know them too, share them.
