If you’ve been paying attention you’ve probably noticed that the wheels on the S14 look a bit like garbage! And let’s be honest who doesn’t like a brand new set of wheels. However, I actually like the wheels on the S14 and would like to use them for a bit longer while I save for something new in the future. That said, today we are fixing those scuffed wheels and hopefully I don’t potato them in the process.

Hey guys, it's Zach - I want to point out that I DEFINITELY should have been wearing a proper respirator while painting. ESPECIALLY because I was using activated paint, which makes it much worse for you. I wasn't thinking, and should have been. I'm setting an example for a lot of you guys and I promise to do better on the personal protective equipment. Love you all!!
Good point!
Could you do a episode on the best PPE for working on your car on a budget? Like respirators, gloves, goggles etc?
WE love you Zach dont be hard on yourself Buddy :)
Glad this got a pinned comment, that 2K stuff is rough on the human body.
Stay safe!
Donut should do a tool series. Like how to shop for the right things. When it's ok to go cheap. Etc. I would watch them.
I think one of the first money pit episodes gives some tips on tools. How to start for cheap and the basic things you need. Just get at it man. I'm learning a lot of stuff for the first time and already have them piling up. Just fixed a lawnmower for the first time. Bought some vice grips and pair of pliers for hoses. Was like 20 bucks. Starting to need a place to put this stuff. I just have a grocery store bag full of shit lol

I second this for sure
Would love to see this

How to repaint your wheels; Step 1: Make friends with a powder coater Step 2: *Reap the benefits*
investing in a powder coater seems worth it actually
@@David-rv9kj if you intent to use it a lot and generate revenue, of course. But you'll spend way more on an oven, materials, electricity, and time compared to having someone else do it
I just researched it a bit and it's $70 dollars to have a 17" rim powdercoated by a reputable coater on the East Coast. I can't vouche for West Coast but that seems like a much better outlet. I understand the diyers like doing shit themselves but realistically its night and day quality difference and I would recommend just getting it professionally done rather than buying professional grade products and doing it yourself.
@@Wolfcone I would think that you would want to do all the prep work with fixing any curb rash and whatnot first right? Essentially take a ready to go wheel to the powdercoat shop?
@@UpStart5 after all that work it would be $100/120 The price is JUST the powdercoat
Me: Yeah, I could probably do this Zach: Step 1, take you tires off Me: Well maybe next time
I mean it’s true, not everyone can take their tires off at home.
@@genshinpostingch it’s a pain to take them off, you need a tire remover which cost a good amount of money and you need a second person
@@Pricyfire Or you can take it to any professional wheel repair shop and get them to dip the wheels for you. They'll remove the tyres for $10 and then charge $10 per wheel for dipping. $50 and it completely cuts out the labour of having to sand and feather chips as the paint is fully removed.
@@Pricyfire you don't need a second person at all but yes you also need a compressor

Very good and detailed video. To anyone reading the comments, I would recommend repairing the rash yourself, but then just drop it off at a powder coater. It typically costs $75 per wheel to have it sandblasted and powder coated which is only $10 more than he paid to paint it himself. You won't need to spend 8 hours of your time and you'll get a stronger finish in the end.
65 dollars a wheel was overstatement. Because with one can of clear/paint he could have finished 3 or even 4 wheels. Better prepare all of them at once. But your advice is better. And your body will thank you as 2k clear and painting in general is very bad for your lungs.
@@mindaugas1906 wear a proper mask I guess? Lol, But it really does feel satisfying and rewarding if you're able to get stuff like this done by yourself.
@@kio9922 proper as in very proper. Because even 50 dollar 3M mask clearly states it doesn't stop 2k clear vapor entering your lungs. And that stuff is never leaving. So if savings are not huge might aswell take it to professionals.
@@mindaugas1906 Oh wow 👀 Now I understand why...Thanks
This has a big asterisk. A lot of powder coaters use a very high temp and can weaken your wheels in the process. Need to find experienced people who have done many sets of powder coating, and you have to mention the worry about damaged wheels.
Sometimes you watch Money Pit to learn how to do something yourself, and sometimes you watch to learn you don't want to do it yourself.

Zach may be cool, but smart? Really??
2 Things Zach, I would say always sand down the primer, regardless of how flat it lays down, you need those fine scratches of the 400-600 grit for the paint to adhere to the primer. As for the tack cloths, its always better to completely open it and let it air out for at least 5 minutes. that cloth has this residue that if used too rough on your panel, itll leave that residue and give you fisheyes on your paint and itll reflect on your clear. Other than that, im super impressed with how much you know man. Amazing job (just a tip from a body tech/painter)
no need to sand if the two paints are compatible and can chemically bond though.
“Who changed my clothes?” best line in this vid. Great paint job too

Zach is definitely my favorite from Donut. This was very well done, explained well. TBH it may be more cost effective to buy a new wheel or pay someone for some people, but it can be fun to work on something and you'll feel good about it afterward.
Since sir Christopher Fixtopher already covered this, I just watch for pure Zach Jobe goodness.

I know we are all car mod professionals here and would never make silly mistakes, but it's really important after you do this to get your wheels rebalanced, especially since you pulled the weights off the wheel for painting. A balanced wheel is a happy wheel!
Prob more important to put the tire back on..but hey, each to their own.
@@FirstLast-bi8xi actually no I’d rather have no tires than non balanced wheels unless you have to drive it to get balanced unbalanced wheels wreak havoc on wheel bearings

Repaired wheels for 6+ years, probably the best DIY job i’ve seen! I wish a lot of DIY attempts that I fixed took half the steps he did. Also could have done all 4 wheels in under 5 hours, as good as they did just call a pro, your time is worth the little extra money and more than likely the work will come with a warranty.

Great vid. Thanks for the info on tact cloths. I've dome this diy approach on 4 different sets if wheels and never figured out a solution to the dust creep between coats. Much obliged!
Tac rag between coats
I've fixed curb rash and refinished those exact wheels using a near identical process for a foxbody running in the NASA Camaro-Mustang Challenge series. We stuck with Duplicolor products and no clear coat for a much cheaper result. We were only going for "race car quality" and not a show quality finish, but they still turned out about 90% of a show finish for less work and expense. I've also used citrus based strippers to completely remove the finish from wheels that had a number of previous low quality finishes applied to them. That is a much more labor intensive process as you have to go over it a couple times with the stripper followed by a mineral spirits wipe down before you go to the sand paper. I found a combination of metal and plastic putty knives, copper pot scrubbers, metal welding brushes, and steel wool work well when removing the normally very thick factory wheel finish when using the strippers. Having completely bare metal was a good way to fully inspect the wheels for cracks. When some of the wheels were stripped, it uncovered a raw as-cast aluminum finish that had a much more course texture than some of the other wheels. It was a cool texture, but it didn't quite match the other wheels we had. So if you stip the wheels, be prepared for what you might uncover, especially if they have been produced by different manufacturers, or at different times by the same manufacturer. Too bad you didn't do it in the video, but did recognize the fact that you needed to up your PPE game, especially when using any type of catylized paint.

When I was working on the airframes with a retired Navy sheet metal guy he explained to me you should only work he file on a surface in one direction; away from you. Not in a back and forth motion. The back and forth dulls the filing edge. He started of using the aforementioned technique with the coarse side of the file; but went back and forth instead of away from his body with the fine side.
