Sims 1
With The Sims: Hot Date, restaurants were introduced and the ability for Sims to dine out alone or with someone. In Downtown, there are plenty of cheap & expensive restaurants to choose from. At the restaurant podium you can order one, two or three course meal. If its an expensive restaurant, the maître d' will grab some menus and bring you to your seat. You'll be charged immediately. After a while a waiter will come to take your order and the menus. He will then take your order to the chef. The first course is a salad. The second meal is a typical steak & beans. Ministrel Carlo is an NPC you'll see entertaining the guests in restaurants. You can request a song from him and give him a tip. He'll come to your table and start playing his guitar. The last meal for is a dessert. That is also pre prepared. After they eat the dessert, the dining is over.
Sims 2
In The Sims 2, restaurants were reintroduced with The Sims 2: Nightlife. Every restaurant has a host, that greets the guests. Now Sims can Dine Out again. At first you need to ask to be seated. The host of the restaurant will guide you to your table. After Sims are seated, they will autonomously read the menu and drink water. You can order the same meal for everyone, the chef's choice will order what every Sim has in mind, or you can order individually for every Sim. The waiter will then write your order in a notepad, and go to the kitchen to take the order to the chef. the Chef is always busy cooking meals in the kitchen. After the food is ready the waiter will take the covered platter and bring it to your table, uncovering the meals you ordered. Sims will talk autonomously while eating.
When you're finished, you can pay the bill, or try to skip out on the bill.
Sims 3
In The Sims 3, Sims can dine out at a restaurant. But Sims 3 restaurants are a rabbit hole. The Bistro is a semi rabbit hole that opens up at 11am and closes at 11pm. Your Sim can visit the bistro and have a drink, or eat there alone or with other Sims. §50 - breakfast, brunch, or lunch, and §75 costs a diner per Sim. when Sims eat or drink inside, they'll always change in their formal attire before entering. Sims can also eat outside. They'll enter briefly and take out a plate with food and eat it at an available table outside. Diners are open 24 hours a day. They work similar to Bistros. You can also have drinks or eat alone or with other Sims. The biggest difference is the price. Diner is much cheaper than a Bistro.
With Sims 3: Into The Future, a Food Synthesizer was added to the game. When it's placed in a community lot, it will spawn waiters that will serve food to Sims.
Business as Usual Bistro is a premium Sims 3 Store content. It works like a regular restaurant. There is no host and the menus are already placed on the tables. After you sit, you can click on the menu and choose a meal to order. The chef is the one taking the orders, cooking the meals and serving them to the guests.
Sims 4
In The Sims 4, the dining experience was added with Sims 4 Dine Out. Every restaurant has a host that is a random NPC, that is responsible for managing the tables. When your Sim enters a restaurant, they must go to the host station and request a table. Sims will autonomously read the menu. When you decide to order, the food menu will pop up showing 4 categories: Drinks, Appetizers, Main Course, and Dessert. Sims can order up to one drink and one meal at a time. After you choose a meal, a waiter will come to take your order. The Chef is always busy cooking meals in the kitchen. After the food is ready, the waiter will take the covered platter and bring it to your table.
