  • Steve McQueen never owned either of the 2 Mustangs used in the movie. Warner Brothers Studios owned them. Both were sold after the movie was completed. The stunt Mustang was sold as scrap metal. The survivor Mustang eventually bought by Robert Kiernan. I did some work on that car in 1970 at the Ford dealership where I worked. The car was just as badass as it was in the movie.

  • I grew up in San Francisco in the 1950's. I was there when they filmed Bullitt. My Dad was a S.F.P.D. police inspector and I have photos of Steve McQueen signed to my Dad , taken at the police hall 7th and brannan. The man that drove the black Charger was a highway patrolman. Better times back then.

    • @@pemj7360true fact you posted about the mustang with no brakes ...To achieve the stunning conclusion to the chase in which the Charger loses control, leaps an Armco fence and plows into a gasoline station, Loftin rigged up a tow and release set up hidden from the camera’s view between the Mustang and the Charger. Dressed to double McQueen, Loftin laterally towed the Charger at 90 mph with its two dummy passengers and at the right moment released the Charger into the nitro-loaded gas station. Unfortunately, the Charger missed the station, but the charges were set off and the explosion, thanks to some deft film editing, had the desired effect and was added to the movie.

This movie that was filmed in 68 was the very first time that filmmakers mounted cameras on the vehicles and inside the vehicles for the chase scenes this is a practice that is still done today.. so whether you are a Mustang fan or one of the many haters this car & movie have changed the way that you watch any car scene filmed since then. Some time in the 90's, a writer or editor from a magazine (can't remember the name) found out the location of the car and the owners (Sean's dad) contact info. Sean's dad was interviewed and if I remember correctly, the writer did get a few photographs of the car in the barn. There was also the person or people who broke into the barn it was stored in and stole the air cleaner and took pictures of it.

When McQueen sneaks up behind the Charger, the driver of the Charger looks in his rear view mirror and sees the Mustang behind ... if you look reel close you won't see anyone in the North American driver's side you see someone in the front passenger's seat driving! Cheque it out ... as you eluded to, someone got taken for a "ride"! Maybe it's some form of money laundering? Watch this Mike: At the same shot look at the outside rear view mirror ... at the beginning of the chase the mirror is on the driver's side door .. at the 2:10-2:11 point the mirror is on the passenger's door but no mirror on the driver's door! • But in the movie, the car that Steve McQueen drives does not have any chrome trim on the side of the car including the rocker panel. I’m pretty sure they said they didn’t change anything to the exterior but they obviously changed that or someone did

    • Vinnie's Kicks There’s a second stunt car that was damaged in a jump during filming. It is currently being restored. There is a video on KZhead about it.

    • I have watched that car chase. At least 5 times. When the passenger in the black charger put his seatbelt on with a snap, you knew something amazeing was going to happen. Best car chase ever filmed. By far. Other car chase scenes are just too long and overly complicated. Steve McQueen was incredible. Great movie.

    • @transformer889, FALSE. The stunt Mustang was sold for scrap and was found in a Mexico junk yard as a bare shell. It was bought and currently near restored but remains unfinished.
