I have some great memories as a kid of playing a game with my brother that involved spinning a top and knocking down pins. I couldn’t recall anything else about the game other than just having so much fun playing it. Fast forward to today and now we have things like Google that tells me the game was called Skittles and that it’s been around for a very long time! So, in an effort to bring back even more memories and to give my son the same fun experience I had, I wanted to create this game for ourselves. The construction is pretty straight forward using just 3/4” and 1/2” thick material, basic joinery, and no special tools required. So enjoy the video and then head over to my website and pick up the plans to build your very own!

  • I never heard of this game, but it reminds me of a game we had when I was a kid called Battling Tops. As I recall, the ring was slightly concave and about 16" in diameter. Up to four tops could be launched at once, and the last one standing was the winner. Any of you old timers remember that game? How about the names of the tops? Only one I remember is Hurricane Hank 😊

  • I too played skittles at my great uncles house in Florida when we would visit. I was always fascinated with the game. This was always on my list as a project to build, but my shop is a disaster and I get anxiety just going down to it and looking. SWMBO has her mom's house all over the shop and basement...3 years and still won't go through it...Oh...don't get me started on the garage...which has her grandmother's house in it...and that's been 15+ years.

  • Hola! 🖐I was not aware of this game, I never knew this existed till today. When I saw the Title "Skittles" I was sure it was some kind of gag BUT NO!!! This looks like it's loads of fun. I'll have to put this in the memory bank and build when I'm set up and running. By the way, I was going to compliment you on overcoming your "Princess Hands" when you pounded those pieces with your hand mallets but then nope, the outtakes brought you right back :D I also have one of them gut vises, very portable. Love that shirt "Third Coast Craftsman". Thanks for the video, great job. Take care and have a good one, Adios.👊

  • I remember playing this in the early 70's when on a winter vacation in the Rockies. Was definitely one of the more popular games in the lodge game room. I have been thinking about building one for a long time but since I don't have a lathe (or a CNC :(), I always put it on a back-burner. The most daunting part for me was to get a good spinning top. Your version is fairly simple, but does seem to work well. From a physics perspective, putting the mass lower on the shaft would probably give better stability though.

    @banto1@banto110 ай бұрын
    • From what I understand, you don't want it to be really stable otherwise it just sits in one place and spins until it dies out. With the mass higher, it tends to lean and wander more, which is good in this case.

      @FishersShop@FishersShop10 ай бұрын
    • @@FishersShop The top's lateral movement will happen due to slight friction with the surface and the occasional bumping into pins and walls. You need to apply a force in the direction it will travel and wobbling or tilt won't cause it wander if the shaft has a point on the end. Putting the mass lower will allow the top to spin longer, increasing the chance of hitting something and changing trajectory. I guess the higher mass position was a design choice to make the turns shorter for kids with limited patience.

If you don't want short pieces to spin and hit you, put a C clamp In the direction the part will turn. Or if it's big enough, just clamp it to the press. I would also use my laser to cut out the room templates.

  • Hey Drew! Just an observation, Back in the 60s, I remember "helping" my woodworker Uncle as he built one of these games for my 14 year old self. I was in charge of the top and remember that his version has the disc portion being lower down on the dowel. Like maybe half way. 69 year old me realizes that this lowered the center of gravity of the top and helped it to spin longer and with a little less wobble. I do plan on building your version with that one change. I might need to change the shape of the partition openings as well. As always, thanks sharing your expertise and your humor with us. My Fisher's flip cart is for sure the most used item in my little shop!
